Alvana L. Elrod
The memorial service for Alvana L. Elrod will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Butte Falls Community Church. Pastor John Adams will officiate.

Mrs. Elrod, 84, of Butte Falls, died Saturday (April 5, 2003) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Elrod Scholarship Fund, c/o Washington Mutual, Attn.: Mike Lavendar, 133 W. Main St., Eagle Point, OR 97524.

She was born Alvana Long on May 15, 1918, in Shattuck, Okla. On Dec. 5, 1936, in Eureka, Kan., she married Evertt Elrod, who died in 1989. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1939 from Kansas.

Mrs. Elrod was a nurse’s aide for Dr. Howard Ferguson in Shady Cove for 12 years. She was an Avon representative in the Shady Cove/Eagle Point area for 25 years and later in life was active as a companion for the elderly in the Medford area.

She was a member of the Moose Lodge in Medford and the Lion’s Auxiliary in Shady Cove.

Mrs. Elrod enjoyed crocheting, puzzle books and roses.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Anne Miller, Butte Falls; two sisters, Mary Goodyear, Russell, Kan., and Lillian Skinner, Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Rita Marie Bodenstab
The memorial service for Rita Marie Bodenstab will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the First Church of the Nazarene in Medford.

Mrs. Bodenstab, 90, of Medford, died Friday (March 14, 2003) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

She was born Feb. 5, 1913, in Rogue River.

Mrs. Bodenstab was a homemaker. She enjoyed the Mail Tribune’s crossword puzzles, listening to Christian family life radio, gardening and feeding birds.

Survivors include her son, John; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; and a daughter, Lilly Sherman.

John Eugene Miller
A memorial gathering will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday for John Eugene Miller at the Miller home, 608 Mary Place in Medford.

Mr. Miller, 65, died Friday (March 14, 2003) at his home.

Private interment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Contributions may be sent to Providence Home Health and Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born June 1, 1937, in Wellsville, Ohio, the son of Chester and Marie Miller. On June 1, 1957, in Santa Cruz, Calif., he married Rose Marie Sardi, who survives.

Mr. Miller joined the U.S. Army on Sept. 17, 1954, serving until Sept. 18, 1957, when he held the rank of private.

He worked for a bus driver for City Bus, before the inception of Rogue Valley Transportation District.

Mr. Miller enjoyed coin collecting, camping and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two sons, Todd A. and James M., both of Medford; three daughters, Deborah M. Jackson and Mary C. Carney, both Medford, and Erin Favre, Marysville, Wash.; two brothers, Bob, Wellsville, Ohio, and Bill, Rudy, Ark.; two sisters, Marilyn Merriman, Alpharetta, Ga., and Marge Taylor, Rudy, Ark.; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

David L. Johnson
The memorial service for David L. Johnson will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Christian Church in Grants Pass. The Rev. Wes Winn will officiate.

Mr. Johnson, 59, of Grants Pass, died Monday (March 10, 2003) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church, 305 S.W. H St., Grants Pass, OR 97526; or the American Heart Association, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Suite 10, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Aug. 29, 1943, in Bremerton, Wash. On Jan. 10, 1963, in Everett, Wash., he married Irene Marr, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley six years ago from Sacramento, Calif.

Mr. Johnson was an account executive for Wonder Bread in the Sacramento area from 1963 until his retirement in 1990.

He was a member of the First Christian Church.

Mr. Johnson was an outdoorsman who enjoyed playing golf, camping and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Tami Torres and Treena Johnson, both Stockton, Calif., and Tifini Reager, Lebanon, Pa.; a brother, Brad, Sacramento, Calif.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Verne Beebe
Verne Beebe, 72, of Jacksonville, died Friday (March 14, 2003) at her home. No services are scheduled..

Memorial contributions may be made to an animal charity of choice.

She was born Verne Hamm on May 27, 1930, in Buffalo, N.Y.

She graduated from UCLA with a bachelor’s degree in commercial arts.

On April 4, 1956, in San Diego, she married Antonio Beebe, who preceded her in death in 1993. The couple moved to the Rogue Valley in 1957.

Mrs. Beebe was a real estate investor. She restored several historic homes in Jacksonville and Talent.

She owned and operated Abigail’s Antiques in Jacksonville.

Mrs. Beebe was a member of the local Parent-Teacher Association and served on Jacksonville’s historical architectural review commission and Southern Oregon Humane Society board of directors.

Her interests included animals and history.

Survivors include three daughters, Elizabeth Young, Portland; Barbara Beebe, Los Angeles; and Victoria Hughes, Jacksonville; two sons, Robert Beebe, Jacksonville; and Anthony Beebe, Riverside, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Ruby Jean Fohl
Ruby Jean Fohl, 80, of Rogue River, died Wednesday (March 12, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center, 14 days short of her 58th wedding anniversary. A private service will be held at Eagle Point National cemetery.

She was born Dec. 27, 1922, in Clovis, Calif. One of a set of triplets, she was born in a tent and delivered by an Indian midwife. She was the daughter of longtime Gold Hill residents William "Bill" and Annie Elizabeth "Bessie" Bailey. She spent most of her youth in Yuma, Ariz., where her father was a farmer. She graduated from Yuma High School.

During World War II, she joined the WACS, and met her future husband, Francis "Frank" Fohl, who was stationed on the same submarine chaser as her brother. They were married March 26, 1945, in New Orleans.

As the wife of a career Army sergeant, Mrs. Fohl lived in Germany, Austria, Washington, Hawaii and California. She also had a career as a federal civil servant. The Fohls retired to Susanville, Calif., in 1973, where they enjoyed the outdoors, fishing in Eagle Lake and trips to Reno. They later moved to Gold Hill and to Rogue River in 1994.

Mrs. Fohl was an avid 49er and Giants fan, and later in life enjoyed watching Tiger Woods. She also enjoyed crocheting afghans, playing Aggravation and reading.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of 57 years, include three daughters, Millie Thomas, and Janet Schroeder, both Santa Rosa, Calif., and Barbara Thompson, Sacramento, Calif.; three brothers, Lee Bailey, Tacoma, Wash., Hubert Bailey, Central Point, and Ralph Bailey, Yuma, Ariz.; a sister, Lorena Fletcher, Yuma, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.

Dawn Elizabeth Glick
The memorial service for Dawn Elizabeth Glick will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ashland Christian Fellowship. Pastor Steve Bright will officiate. The graveside service was held Friday at Scenic Hills Memorial Park in Ashland.

Mrs. Glick, 28, of Medford, died Monday (March 10, 2003) in Medford.

She was born June 4, 1974, in Glendale, Calif. She moved to the Rogue Valley when she was 17.

Mrs. Glick enjoyed spending time with her children, art and modeling clothes.

Survivors include a daughter, Brianna Glick, Medford; a son, Caden, Medford; her mother and stepfather, Cynthia and Steve Dotson, Sunland, Calif.; a sister, Jennifer Butz, Glendale, Calif.; and a brother, Lyle Eric Butz, Lakeview Terrace, Calif. She was preceded in death by her father, L. Rex Butz.

Archie Isaiah Roberts
The funeral for Archie Isaiah Roberts will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel in Waco, Texas. Pastor Jack Gilliland of the Second Baptist Church in Vernon, Texas, will officiate. Interment will follow at Waco Memorial Park.

Mr. Roberts, 99, of Medford, died Wednesday (March 12, 2003) at Three Fountains Nursing Center in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Second Baptist Church, 2815 Sand Road, Vernon, TX 76384.

He was born April 10, 1903, in Hockley, Texas, to Lee and Almeda (Hard) Roberts. He grew up on a farm in Hockley, Texas, where he attended a one-room schoolhouse. On July 31, 1942, in Houston, he married Claire Katherine Arnold, who died in 1998. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 2002 from Vernon, Texas.

Mr. Roberts lived in Houston, where he worked on the ship docks during World War II, then for the Ford plant making Model Ts for a short time before making Model As. After that, he worked as a machine repairman for Hughes Tool in Houston, where he became a precision machinist before retiring after 34 years of work. After his retirement from Hughes, he worked for Anderson-Greenwood Machine Shop in Texas, making aircraft parts.

During his working years he also raised cattle, farmed and built houses, using the proceeds from the house sales to buy a new car.

Mr. Roberts was a lifelong active member of Baptist churches.

He enjoyed animals and always owned a dog. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and growing everything from flowers to produce.

Survivors include a son, Jimmie, White City; two daughters, Janice Thompson, Donie, Texas, and Ann Evans, Montgomery, Texas; four grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Louie and Henry; and three sisters, Dora Lee Hosmer, Cassie Mae Hightower, and Hedy Sorsby.

Grace A. Bywater
The funeral for Grace A. Bywater will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Meadows Chapel in Sams Valley. Pastor Ernie McDonald will officiate. Interment will be in Grand Junction, Colo., at a later date.

Mrs. Bywater, 89, of Sams Valley, died Wednesday (March 12, 2003) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation Hospice, 2600 Siskiyou Blvd., Suite 100, Medford, OR 97504.

She was born July 25, 1913, in Michigan. In 1931, she married George Bywater. They later divorced. He died in 1980. In 1940, she married Norman Bywater, who died in 1969.

Mrs. Bywater was a member of the Baptist church. She lived in the Rogue Valley on and off since 1946.

She enjoyed fishing, hiking, camping and crafts.

Survivors include three daughters, Roberta Robbins, Grand Junction, Colo., and "Midge" Gloria Adams and "Tiny" Glorene Kelly, both Sams Valley; two sons, Norman, Aurora, Colo., and Gary, Phoenix, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; four great- great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

Walter L. Anders
The funeral for Walter L. Anders will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home in Ashland. A reception will follow at Trinity Episcopal Church. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Anders, 70, of Central Point, formerly of Ashland, died Tuesday (March 11, 2003) at Ashland Community Hospital.

He was born Feb. 21, 1933, in Winkler, Texas, to Mary and Palmer Anders. On March 12, 1955, in Cusseta, Ga., he married Janice Dion Carter, who survives.

Mr. Anders moved to Ashland in 1961, where he worked as an auto mechanic at several locations and owned and operated a mechanic shop for 17 years.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and later re-enlisted to serve an additional six years.

Mr. Anders enjoyed horses, camping, country music and spending time with his family.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Walter L., Ashland, and Paul Nathan, Portland; a daughter, Beth Anders Wilson, Talent; five brothers, Donnell Ray, Johnnie P., Charlie J., Mike Carroll, all Houston, and Marvin E., Cloverleaf, Texas; three sisters, Billie Joyce Baker and Betty Lu Williams, both Houston, and Delva Jean Roach, Dayton, Texas; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother.

Diane Irene Corby
A private service will be held for Diane Irene Corby.

Mrs. Corby, 77, of Medford, formerly of Hornbrook, Calif., died Wednesday (March 12, 2003) at a Medford foster care home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rescue Ranch, P.O. Box 195, Hornbrook, CA 96044.

She was born March 19, 1925, in Dickinson, S.D., to Frank and Mathilda (Schaff) Frank. She grew up in Minnesota, then moved to Southern California. On April 20, 1970, in Las Vegas, she married Frederick Corby, who preceded her in death. She moved to Hornbrook, Calif., in 1991 from Petaluma, Calif.

Mrs. Corby was a homemaker.

She enjoyed caring for her animals and would take in homeless animals and care for them.

Survivors include two sons, Bob Archer, Hornbrook, Calif.; and Larry Weidell, Spearfish, S.D.; three grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
