Alice Whittemore Kingston
The memorial service for Alice Whittemore (Pride) Kingston will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Conway Funeral Home in Peabody, Mass. A local memorial service will be held later this month at Anna Maria Creekside.

Mrs. Kingston, 98, of Medford, died Sunday (May 4, 2003) at her home.

She was born in Somerville, Mass., to Grace and Alfred Pride. In 1924, she married Judge Allan Roy Kingston, who died in 1983. They spent their first years together in Clearwater, Fla., later moving to Arlington, Mass.

They were members of the Winchester Country Club, where they were golfers and proficient in the sport of curling. For 30 years, they divided time between Clearwater, Fla., and Arlington, Mass. She made her home in Clearwater after her husband’s death and moved to Medford in 2000 to be near her daughter.

Mrs. Kingston was active in volunteer associations in and around Boston, including the American Red Cross where she founded the Red Cross Drivers during World War II.

She and her husband enjoyed traveling throughout the world. They were invited to sit in the reviewing stand at the Queen’s coronation, entertaining and being entertained by Danish Prince Knut and his wife, and dined with Lord Mountbatten on his visit to San Diego in the 1950s.

Survivors include a daughter, Joyce Graham, Medford, a brother, Robert Pride, North Palm Beach, Fla., six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister Emily Truesdale; and a brother, Alfred M. Pride.

Helen Buckley
Helen Buckley, 92, of Medford, died April 29, 2003, in Medford. No service is planned.

She was born Helen Cook on May 14, 1910, in Norwich, N.Y. She married the Rev. Marcus Buckley, who died in 1998.

Mrs. Buckley was a housewife. She lived in Medford for 28 years.

Survivors include a brother, Donald Cook, Canyon Lake, Texas.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Leslie A. Shaw
The funeral for Leslie A. Shaw will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Conger-Morris Medford Chapel. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn will officiate. The committal service will follow in Hillside Garden at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Medford.

Mr. Shaw, 94, of Central Point, died Monday (May 5, 2003) in Central Point.

He was born Jan. 21, 1909, in Washington Springs, S.D., to Glenn and Eliva (Gerlt) Shaw and was one of a family of 12. On July 2, 1930, in Mitchell, S.D., he married Muriel E. Davis, who survives.

Mr. Shaw worked for Timber Products in Medford.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Donna Ferris, Beaverton, and Betty Gannaway; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Charles ‘Hoppy’ Hopkins Jr.
Charles "Hoppy" Hopkins Jr., 73, of Central Point, died Saturday (May 3, 2003) at his home. A private memorial service was held at Hillcrest Chapel in Medford. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice officiated.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Nov. 26, 1929, in Baxter Springs, Kan., to Charles and Nola (Stephenson) Hopkins. He was a high school graduate and lived in the Rogue Valley most of his life. On Dec. 24, 1986, in Central Point, he married Nancy Ann, who survives.

Mr. Hopkins owned and operated Hopkins Heating and Air Conditioning for 25 years.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting, camping, building model airplanes and family barbecues.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, James Hopper, Coquille, and Christopher Pitts, Central Point; four daughters, Teri Tate and Stacie Young-Merkle, both Central Point, Sheri Land, Fortuna, Calif., and Laura Speer, Seattle; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Medford.

Patrick Pyle
The memorial service for Patrick Pyle will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Shan Creek Community Church. Pastor Guy Shields will officiate. A private graveside service will be held at Hawthorne Memorial Gardens in Grants Pass.

Mr. Pyle, 93, of Grants Pass, died Friday (May 2, 2003) at Spring Point Specialty Care Community in Grants Pass.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Gospel Rescue Mission Building Fund, c/o Lundberg’s L.B. Hall Funeral Home, 141 N.W. C. St., Grants Pass, Or 97526.

He was born Feb. 15, 1910, in Kimball, Neb., to William and Susanna Pyle. He lived in Nebraska until he was 16 and his family moved to Southern California. He lived there until 1946, when he moved to Southern Oregon.

Mr. Pyle worked in the oil fields in his early working years, then in the construction industry, and retired from Spalding Mill in Grants Pass.

He was a member of Grants Pass Masonic Lodge No. 84 and the Oregon Small Woodman’s organization (tree farmers), where he served on the board of directors.

Mr. Pyle attended Jerome Prairie Church for more than 20 years. He enjoyed visiting local nursing homes, the outdoors and traveling.

Survivors include a daughter, Judy Martin, Grants Pass; three grandsons; and one great-grandchild.

Friends may pay their respects from 2 to 4:30 p.m. today at Lundberg’s L.B. Hall Funeral Home in Grants Pass.

Michael Jon Summers
Michael Jon Summers, 60, of Ashland, died Monday (May 5, 2003) at Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 30, 1942, in Linton, Ind., to Raymond and Esther Summers and grew up in Tucson, Ariz. He received a bachelor’s degree in education from Arizona State University in 1965 and a master’s degree in education from the University of Arizona in 1967. He married Nancy Lee Reiman, who survives.

He served in the U.S. Navy for two years.

Mr. Summers was a teacher for 33 years, retiring in 1997.

He was a member of the State of Oregon Fair Dismissal Appeals Board from 1988 to 1995, and was past president of the Medford Education Association.

Mr. Summers enjoyed photography, traveling and running marathons.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Laura Peters, Springfield, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Summer Braun, Portland; a son, Mark, Portland; a stepson, Ryan Smith, U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Okla.; his mother, Esther Summers, Prescott, Ariz.; two sisters, Sarah Hayden, Prescott, and Sue Graves, Tucson; and seven grandchildren.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Don Paul Rust
The memorial Mass for Don Paul Rust will be at 8:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford. The Rev. Liam Cary will officiate. Interment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Rust, 69, of Medford, died Sunday (May 4, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

He was born June 20, 1933, in Stockton, Calif., to Derek and Olive Velasco Rust. He graduated from Sacramento State University and received a teaching degree from Chico State University. On Aug. 3, 1963, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Medford, he married Marilyn Whitman, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley two years ago from East Nicolaus, Calif.

Mr. Rust was a teacher and vice principal at Brown Elementary School in Rio Oso, Calif. He also coached football, basketball, baseball, volleyball and track.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Mr. Rust was a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Kelly Haptonstall, Talent, and Katie Rust, Marysville, Calif.; a son, Don, Medford; a sister Mayre Warren, Clovis, Calif.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Vivian V. Gordon Ayres
Vivian V. Gordon Ayres, 89, of Medford, died Wednesday (May 7, 2003) at Nussbaum Adult Foster Care in Medford No service is planned.

She was born Vivian Vanderwalker on June 5, 1913, in Ironwood, Mich. On July 8, 1931, in Anaconda, Mont., she married Harold Gordon. The Gordon family moved from Deer Lodge, Mont., to Medford in 1947, where they bought and operated the King Street Market and Service Station until 1956.

During this time she was active in Girl Scout Troop No. 10 for four years, Bethel No. 55 of Job’s Daughters for six years. They moved to Talent in 1968, where she was the city recorder until her retirement in 1973. They then traveled full-time with their trailer until her husband’s death in 1979, when she continued to travel alone.

She moved to Talent in 1982, where she managed Talent Patio Village until 1984. On April 12, 1984, in Medford, she married Elmer V. Ayres, who survives. They traveled extensively in Mexico, Canada, the Midwest and Western states, and spent their winters in Arizona.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include a son, Dr. Donald Gordon, Durango, Colo.; a daughter, Barbara Powers, Jackson, Calif.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gay Gordon.

Brenton 'Brent' E. Ewing
A graveside service for Brenton "Brent" Ellis Ewing will be at 10 a.m. Monday, at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Brent, 9, of Gold Hill, died Saturday (Sept. 20, 2003) at O.H.S.U. in Portland.

He was born May 25, 1994 to Ellis and Karen (Wood) Ewing.

Brent attended Patrick Elementary in Gold Hill. He moved with his family from Tacoma, WA in Jan., 2003, and to Gold Hill in April, 2003.

Memorial contributions may be made to Key Bank Memorial Fund, any branch, No. 37050913717.

He loved school and liked reading. He played the recorder and electric piano. He also taught his 3 year old brother how to ride a bike without training wheels.

Survivors include; his parents, Ellis & Karen Ewing of Gold Hill; 2 brothers Gary Ewing and Ellis Ewing, III of Gold Hill; a half sister Taishia Hultenschmidt of Port Angeles, WA; grandfather, Ellis Ewing Sr. of Gold Hill; grandmother, Rozalind Ewing of Medford; grandparents, Roger and Loraine Wood of Tacoma, WA; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Dorothy Whipkey
Sept. 11, 1915-Sept. 23, 2003 Dorthy Whipkey, 88, of Coos Bay, died Tuesday (Sept. 23, 2003) in Coos Bay. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Grants Pass.

Dorothy was born on Sept. 11, 1915 in Gold Hill to William and Zora (Horn) Shoemaker. Dorothy is survived by her son, Loren Flemming of Grants Pass; a daughter, Loetta Timmons of Coquille; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to: Alzheimer's Association, Cascade/ Coast Chapter, 1238 Lincoln Street, Eugene, Or. 97401.

Sharon Billingsley
The Christian Mass for Sharon Billingsley will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Fri., Sept. 26, 2003 at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, Ashland. A reception will follow at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church. A private family interment will be at Mountain View cemetery, Ashland.

Mrs. Billingsley, 62, of Ashland, died Sept. 19, 2003 at home.

She was born October 26, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan and was raised in Beaumont Calif. In 1973 she moved to Ashland where she worked for Bi-Mart for 20 years, retiring in 2002.

She enjoyed knitting, gardening, and movies.

She was a member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland.

Surviving are: one daughter Michele Barlow of Ashland and one sister JoAnn Lebeck of Simi Valley, California. She was preceded in death by two brothers, her mother, Viola and her step-father Robert Johnson. Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Ted M. Sletten
Ted M. Sletten, 76, died of pulmonary complications Monday (Sept. 22, 2003) at home in Ridgefield, WA.

Mr. Sletten was born Aug. 31, 1927, the great-grandson of local pioneers Alfred Law and Catharine McKee. He lived in the Jacksonville and Medford area as a child and young man. He moved to Portland in 1973 then to Vancouver, WA in 1978.

He worked as a baker for Beck's, Fluhrer's, Johnson's, Safeway and Albertson's. He retired after 25 years in 1986.

Survivors: his wife of 52 years, Roberta; brothers Carl and David; sisters Jeanne and Mary; his daughters Sharon and Deborah; granddaughters April and Cheri Jo; and great-granddaughter Kaitlyn.

Mr. Sletten enjoyed bowling, his computer, gardening and reading his bible.

At his request there will be no funeral. Graveside farewell will be Sept. 27, 2003 at 2 p.m. in Logtown cemetery, Jacksonville.

Warren A. Wolf
Warren A. Wolf, until recently a Medford resident, died September 12 in Phoenix, Arizona, after several weeks of illness.

He was born December 31, 1924, in Payette, Idaho, and moved to Salem in 1929. After graduating from Salem High School, Wolf entered the University of Oregon. His studies were interrupted by World War II, in which he served in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the Pacific. After the war, he graduated from the University of Oregon, then obtained a Master's Degree from the Kansas City Art Institute.

Wolf moved to Medford in 1951, and taught art at Medford High School from 1952 to 1963. Many of his students have become artists, and many remained his lifelong friends. After leaving Medford, he had a career as a college-level art teacher and administrator, including positions at Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, Buffalo State College, and the Portland Art Museum School.

An artist known for his abstract and heavily-textured paintings, his work has been shown in national and regional juried exhibits, and in numerous one-man and group shows in galleries around the country. He was one of the founders of the Rogue Valley Art Association and the Rogue Gallery, where his work has been shown on several occasions.

Wolf returned to Medford in 2000, and became active as a teacher and student in Southern Oregon University's Southern Oregon Learning in Retirement program.

He is survived by two children, Douglas Wolf of Syracuse, New York, and Sara Wolf of Hull, Massachusetts; two grandchildren, David Wolf of Chicago and Lesley Wolf of Brooklyn; and three sisters, Geraldyn Johnson of Salem, LouAnne Coutant of Grants Pass, and Judith Crutcher of San Francisco.

A memorial service will be held at the Rogue Gallery at 3:00 PM on November 1. Contributions may be sent to the SOLIR Program (send to the SOU Foundation, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland 97520, and designate SOLIR) or Friends of the Animal Shelter (P.O. Box 3412, Ashland 97520).
