Colburn 'Corky' Barrell
A memorial service to honor Colburn "Corky" Barrell, who passed away Sept. 5, 2003, after a 2 1/2 year battle with cancer was held Monday, September 15th at the Sun Valley Resort Limelight Room, Sun Valley, Idaho.

Corky was born February 12, 1944, at Bend, Oregon, the youngest of three children to Colburn Harry (Bunny) and Ruth Isted Barrell. The family moved to Medford, Oregon in 1950.

Corky graduated from Medford High School in 1962 and earned his Masters Degree in Business from Oregon State University. He began working as a front desk clerk at Sun Valley Resort in the early sixties and wore many hats at the resort before settling as Manager of the Sun Valley Garage in 1977, a position he held until his death.

Corky was recognized by his 1923 Model T Roadster, a project completed while still in high school. He belonged to several car clubs and participated in shows throughout the Northwest.

Corky was an avid skier and he helped to organize the 1974 World Cup Race held at Sun Valley. He was also a 1970 participant in the in the Saunderson Pro-AM where his team took first.

He was an accomplished horseman and worked with the Blaine County Search and Rescue for many years. Corky helped to organize the Warm Springs Riding Club and was a lifetime member. He was also a member of the Sawtooth Rangers. Corky and Andy Schernthanner were largely responsible for pioneering the trails at Adams Gulch.

He was an active member in the Wood River Roping Club and competed in competitions throughout the Northwest in heading and heeling and won numerous buckles. He was instrumental in the organization of the Sagebrush Equine Training Center.

Corky was well-known throughout the area for his generosity, loyalty and winning smile. He was a true friend to all who knew him.

Corky is survived by Lana Breazeale of Hailey; 2 sisters, Marcia Quinney of Layton, Utah, and Brenda Dunlap of Santa Rosa, California; 9 nieces and nephews and 11 great-nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make memorial contributions to the Sagebrush Arena Handicap Riding Program at PO Box 2918, Sun Valley, ID 83353 or the Hospice of the Wood River Valley, PO Box 4320, Ketchum, ID 83340.

Florence A. Hoots
A mass will be held Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003 at 12 p.m. at the Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church, 600 Bebee Road, Central Point, OR for Florence A. Hoots, 86, of Arlington, WA (Formerly of Central Point, OR). Father Jim Clifford will officiate. Interment will follow at the Eagle Point National cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2003 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

Mrs. Hoots died Friday (Sept. 19, 2003) at the Regency Care Center of Arlington in Arlington, Washington.

Florence was born Sept. 22, 1916 in Yonkers, New York to Edward & Jessie Cave.

Mrs. Hoots served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II & the Korean Conflict.

On May 15, 1947 in Bergenfield, NJ she married Marvin Hoots who preceded her in death in 1999.

Florence moved to Oregon in 1964 from North Carolina and moved to Arlington, WA in 2000. She worked as a secretary for the Housing Authority of Jackson County and as a city recorder for the city of Gold Hill. She was a member of the Shepherd of the Valley Catholic Church, the Providence Guild, and Catholic Daughters. She enjoyed her grandchildren, playing Bunko and working crossword puzzles.

Georgia LaLande
Georgia Vogel LaLande, a resident of Ashland, died at Rogue Valley Medical Center on September 17, 2003. She was 79.

A memorial service is scheduled at Ashland's Trinity Episcopal Church, 44 N. 2nd St, at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25.

Mrs. LaLande was born Georgia Louise Vogel on March 15, 1924 in Burley, Idaho, to George Henry Vogel and Gladys Thomson Vogel. She grew up in Nampa, Idaho.

During the Depression her father, a Western Union telegrapher, was often out of work; her mother, who had grown up on a farm in eastern Idaho, became a self-employed seamstress to support the family during this period.

Georgia graduated from Nampa High School in 1942, and then went on to nursing school, becoming a registered nurse.

In June 1945, at Annapolis, Maryland, Georgia married her high school sweetheart, newly commissioned Ensign Albert M. LaLande, U.S.N. As a Navy wife for over 25 years, she was a homemaker and community volunteer in a wide variety of places, from Pearl Harbor, the Panama Canal Zone, and Norfolk, VA, to Brooklyn, NY, the Philippine Islands, and Bremerton, WA (where Capt. LaLande retired from the Navy in 1971, and they continued to live for many years). She was her husband's care-giver during his last years. After his death in 1997, Georgia moved to Ashland to be near her son, Jeff, daughter-in-law, Hannah Judy, and grandson, Dan.

Georgia loved being with family and with her friends. She had a beautiful singing voice and belonged to choral groups when she was young. An avid reader of fiction and biographies, she was also very interested in national politics.

She loved the joys of the natural world, most particularly birds.

Gloria Harris
Gloria Harris, 80, a resident of the Forest Grove community, died Wednesday morning, (Sept. 17, 2003) at the Marquis Care at Forest Grove.

Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003 at 11 a.m. at the Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.

Gloria Patten was born Oct. 7, 1922, in Stillwater Minnesota and raised in North Dakota. She lived in California and Medford before moving in 1980 to Forest Grove. She was a homemaker. In 1945, she married Howard. He died in 1978.

Survivors include: her sons, David and Richard; daughters, Cheryle and Patricia; brother, Bradley; sister, Betty; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Harold Glenn Smith
The funeral service for Mr. Harold Glenn Smith will be at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept.22, at the Memory Gardens Chapel. Interment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Smith of Phoenix, died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2003) at his home.

He was born on April 1, 1914 to Clifton and Mary Smith on their ranch in Pleasant Creek (near Rogue River). He spent his whole life living in the Rogue Valley. He was raised on a farm in Central Point with 3 brothers and a sister. He attended Central Point Schools and graduated from Central Point High School in 1932.

Harold was a farmer and raised vegetables for the commercial market. He worked for Plumbley Logging Co. for over 30 years building roads until he was injured in a logging accident in 1972.

He loved the woods and animals.

He grew an extensive garden every year. He was very knowledgeable in all aspects of farming using techniques passed down to him from his grandfather who was from Germany.

He loved learning, and was a voracious reader. He was intensely interested in world events. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He enjoyed exploring new places and traveling. He spent much of his time outdoors.

Harold married Esther Wright, Oct. 23, 1939. He spent a lifetime in devotion to her. He was a kind and gentle man. He loved his family and taught them never to give up, and be strong. He will be missed.

He is survived by his wife Esther of Phoenix; one brother, Norman Smith of Central Point; three daughters, Glenna Smith of Phoenix, Peggy Walts of Phoenix AZ, and JoAnn Hunter of Talent; 9 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

"Irish Wake"
To Honor Ashland Sculptor Arnie Krigel

A celebratory memorial service next week will honor Arnie Krigel, 67, an Ashland sculptor and retired architect and builder, who died September 6th.

He had asked for an Irish Wake-type celebration, complete with tambourines and laughter. It will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 22, at Temple Emek Shalom with musical performances and tributes by his family and friends.

Arnie and his wife Renee, a pianist, moved to Ashland five years ago after a nationwide search for the perfect retirement location.They quickly fell in love with Ashland, and the feeling was reciprocated. Arnie pursued his passion for sculpting, filling his home and garden with his work, including his signature piece, a 10-foot sculpture of Don Quixote on horseback.

His garden and work were featured in a recent tour by the American Association of University Women Garden Club.

Arnie took courses in sculpture at Southern Oregon University, sharing his experience and wisdom with students one-third his age, and finding strength in their youth and enthusiasm.

He and his wife were co-presidents of the Ashland Newcomers Club, and Arnie was a member of the Ashland Arts Commission. He did volunteer work with the Civilian Emergency Rescue Team and was a familiar figure in the Chamber of Commerce information booth.

A native New Yorker, Arnie was known for his infectious laugh and irrepressible sense of humor. He had a wide circle of friends, not only in Ashland, but also around the country and the world. He delighted in taking guests to his favorite Oregon attractions, including the Shakespeare Festival, Crater Lake, Mt. Ashland and rafting on the Rogue River. Arnie was an avid skier, ice skater, bicycler, runner and hiker, who ran two marathons, and refused to be slowed down by health problems.

Arnie earned a degree at Carnegie Mellon University, served in the United States Navy; and worked for a number of large corporations and contractors before retiring. He helped build some of the nation's most impressive structures.

He died at home, under hospice care, with his wife of 45 years at his side. Shortly before his death, he visited London to see exhibitions of his daughter Lisa's art work, and his son, David, recently climbed a mountain in Yosemite National Park to place a memorial to his father at the peak. He and Arnie had a lifelong father-and-son tradition of skiing and hiking together. Arnie is survived by his wife Renee, who majored in music at New York University; daughter Lisa of Cardiff Wales, a ceramist and sculptor married to sculptor Nigel Talbot; son David, a San Francisco financial executive; and two sisters, Evelyn Kaplan of New York and Rose Zuckerman of Florida.

Margret Hughes Long
Margret Long, 90, of Medford died Mon. (Sept. 15, 2003) in the loving care of Maryann's care home.

Margret was born in Fern Valley, Phoenix, OR on Sept. 22, 1912 to Lemuel Harrison and Lillie Edith Roberts Hughes.

Margret wed Donald Boothe Long in Talent on April 16, 1947.

Margret was a beautiful artist and master gardener, but most of all a wonderful, caring and loving mother, grandmother, Great-grandmother and Great-Great-grandmother to all.

Margret loved spending her summers at the family camp up at Hyatt Lake. There she loved camping, fishing, hunting, and enjoying the beautiful outdoors.

Margret's pride and joy, other than her family and friends, was her beautiful garden that she worked fruitfully in day after day. Its beauty was admired by many in the Rogue Valley.

Margret is survived by, many nieces and nephews; 9 grandchildren; 12 Great-grandchildren; and 8 Great-Great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her sister Mildred Bray, sons, Earnest Lee Beer, Randy Harrison Long, Donald George Long, and Great-granddaughter, Adrianna Nicole Creekmore.

In lieu of flower donations, memorial contributions can be made to: Southern Oregon Humane Society, 2910 Table Rock Rd., Medford, OR 97501.

Graveside services will be held Sat., Sept. 27, 2003 at 11:30 a.m. at the I.O.O.F cemetery. Mrs. Long's daughter-in-law, Elly Long will lead services.

Winfrey "Grady" Mankins
1921- 2003

Grady Mankins, 81, died at a foster home in Medford Monday (Sept. 8, 2003). A memorial service is planned at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at Memory Gardens Mortuary. Pastor Robert Longan will officiate. Inurnment will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Grady was born Nov. 2, 1921 in Electra, TX, a son of Carl and Irene Mankins.

He graduated from McAllen High School in 1941. He moved to Los Angeles, and joined the Navy, where he was a welder.

After his discharge he moved to Portland, OR where he met his wife, Alice Elaine Delmonts, who preceded him in death in 2001. They were married in Portland on July 29, 1944. They moved to Roseburg, OR in 1948, where Grady was a welder and then became Superintendent for Roseburg Paving. He then sold cars for Hansen Chevrolet for almost twelve years, during which time he and his wife owned and operated the only Mexican Restaurant in Roseburg, "The Villa". Grady was a "Jack of All Trades", and a master of many. When he had a idea, it became a reality.

He moved his family to Medford in 1960 where he and his wife owned and operated The Westerner Tack 'n Togs for 32 years, which became the largest and most complete Western store on the Pacific West Coast and Western United States. He joined the Jackson County Fair Board, was the President of the Jackson County Horsemen's Assoc. and Wranglers Horsemen's Assoc. and held many other offices and positions within the western community.

His hobbies were hunting, fishing, traveling by RV's, and yachting in the San Juan Islands with his wife.

He is survived by his son, Ronald M. Mankins of Applegate; a daughter, Sharla R. Draheim- Connell of Medford; nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Arnott 'Arny' Tanhoff
The funeral service for Arny Tanhoff will be on Monday, Sept. 22, 2003 at 2:30 p.m., at Perl Funeral Home at Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Mr. Tanhoff died Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2003) in Medford.

Arny was born on Sept. 7, 1918 in Spencer, Iowa to Ellory and Hannah (Dahl) Tanhoff. In 1939 he married Laura Reigstad in Estherville, Iowa, who preceded him in death. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1983 from Southern Calif.

He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

After retirement Arny liked to spend time on the golf course.

Survivors include his daughter, Judy Plauster; two sons, Jim Tanhoff and Brad Tanhoff; 5 grandchildren, Scott Rivera, Cathleen Gonzales, Jeffrey Plauster, Trevor Tanhoff and Tyler Tanhoff; 2 great-grandchildren, Robert Corona and Erica Gonzalez; 1 great-great-grandchild, Robert Corona Jr.

He is with God now, and will rest in peace with his beloved wife, Laura.

'Bud' Uhles
"Bud" Harry Robert Uhles, 77, of Medford, died Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2003) at his home. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003 at 1 p.m., at Hope Christian Church, 325 Oak St., Central Point. A dinner will follow the service at 3 p.m. at White City Christian Church, 3100 Antelope Rd., White City.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Rogue Valley Medical Center, Hospice Foundation, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504 He was born the son of Harry and Gertrude Uhles on Dec. 23, 1925, at 5 a.m., in Detroit, Mich., where he lived until he was 5 years old. He moved to Manhattan Beach, Calif., where he lived for 2 years, moved to Stockton, Calif., where he lived for 1 year, and then returned to Manhattan Beach where he attended schools.

At the age of 14, Bud went to work in the Columbia Steel Mills, staying with friends. He got his first car, a 1941 Ford Coupe, when he was 16 years of age. He joined the Navy in 1942, serving in WW II until his discharge in 1947. On Nov. 9, 1951, in Lawnsdale, Calif. he married Jewel. They were married for 51 years. They moved to Oregon in 1967.

Bud was a good Christian man. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, traveling, bird watching, boating, cooking, and most of all working in his shop.

Survivors in addition to his wife, Jewel, include his son, Harry Uhles of Central Point; daughter, Judy Plaice of Huntington Beach, CA; 8 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Ron Ross in 1994, daughter, Linda Miller in 2002, and 1 brother.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Earl Cecil Jones
A funeral service for Earl Cecil Jones will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, at Memory Gardens Mortuary. Pastor Kelly Sullivan, of Redding, CA, will officiate. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Jones, 77, of Eagle Point, died Tuesday (Sept. 16, 2003) at his home.

He was born on Sept. 10, 1926 in Athelstane, WI. On June 11, 1997 in Eagle Point, he married Violet R. Johnson, who survives.

Mr. Jones enjoyed traveling, fishing, square dancing and writing poetry.

In addition to his wife survivors include: two daughters, Sherry Hunt of Everett, WA, and Carol Stephenson of Boise, ID; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday, at Memory Gardens.
