Robert C. Minear
Robert C. Minear of Medford passed away on August 9, at the age of 89.

He was born July 30, 1914 in Medford to Mearl and Jessie Minear. Robert graduated from Medford High School and earned his degree in mechanical engineering from Oregon State University in 1941. He married Zelna Maris on May 23, 1941.

He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Engineers in the South Pacific during World War II.

Robert and his brother, Donald Minear, worked together as orchardists in the pear industry for over 30 years.

Robert was past president of the Fruit Growers League and served on the board of Southern Oregon Sales for many years.

Robert and Zelna moved to the Rogue Valley Manor in their retirement. His activities at the Manor included computer and investment clubs, golf, water volleyball, and Hill Topics newsletter.

Robert was a charter member of the Rogue Monarchs Lions Club, flew radio-controlled airplanes, and enjoyed whitewater rafting until the age of 82.

Survivors include his wife, Zelna; brother, Donald Minear; sisters, Ruth Alborn, Glenna Thompson, and Gladys Williams; daughters, Roberta Minear and Paula Minear; son, Richard Minear; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Philip.

Edna M. Clark
Edna Marie Clark, 93, of Central Point, died Tuesday (Aug. 12, 2003) in Medford.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Marialena ‘Bunny’ J. Viramontes
A memorial service for Marialena "Bunny" J. Viramontes will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest Chapel.
Survivors include her mother, Leoma Sanchez, New Ulm, Minn.

Ethel Brisbin
Ethel Brisbin, 87, of Rogue River died Friday (July 25, 2003) at her family’s home.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home.

Barbara Ferns
A memorial service for Barbara Ferns will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest Chapel, 2201 N. Phoenix Road.

Mrs. Ferns died Friday (July 25, 2003) at Hearthstone in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 31 W. 6th St., Medford, OR 97501.

Born on March 1, 1931, in Medford to Albert Earl and Mary Cordilia (Cardin) Phillips, she was a lifetime Rogue Valley resident.

Mrs. Ferns was married on Jan. 3, 1948, in Grants Pass to Leonard Larson Ferns.

A homemaker and grocery checker for 10 years at the old Big Y Market, she enjoyed crocheting tablecloths, fishing, gardening, hunting mushrooms, and visiting the coast and the family mountain cabin.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Mark of Baker City, Ray of Hood River and Alan of Medford; one daughter, Susan Truly of Medford; four sisters, Lois Boettcher of Phoenix, Lola Wilson of Las Vegas, Nev., Genevieve Risch of Anchorage, Alaska., and Alice Haight of Grants Pass; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Inez Winterllie, Charity Steinthal and Dora Lee Phillips.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary.

Nellie Englehart
Nellie F. Englehart, 69, of Medford died Saturday (July 26, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Memorial Park and Mortuary.

Vernon Murray
Vernon V. Murray, 73, of Medford died Sunday (July 27, 2003) at Medford Rehabilitation Center.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Funeral Directors.

Olive Miriam Stong
A funeral mass for Olive Miriam Stong will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

The committal service for Mrs. Stong, 80, will follow at 11:45 a.m. at Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Southern Oregon Humane Society, 2910 Table Rock Road, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born on Oct. 28, 1922, in Mosca, Colo., to Leonard and Mary (Grigsby) Foley. On Dec. 11, 1943, in Indianapolis, Ind., she married John Elliot Stong, who survives.

She graduated from high school in Alamosa, Colo., then graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. and honorary fellowship from Northern Colorado University. She had lived in the Rogue Valley since 1946.

In addition to being an office manager for the family business, she was a wife, mother and grandmother.

Her interests included gardening, traveling, animals and architectural engineering.

Survivors in addition to her husband include two daughters, Mary Myers of Greenwood, Calif., and Mimi Koza of Junction City; a son, Jon Stong of Santa Rosa, Calif.; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Tegnell of Millbrae, Calif.; and five grandchildren.

Helen Grace Gardipee
The graveside service for Helen Grace Gardipee will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Eagle Point National cemetery with Dr. Ralph Wilson officiating.

Visitation will be held Monday from 3 to 7:30 p.m. at the Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel, 800 S. Front St., Central Point.

Mrs. Gardipee, 80, died Friday (July 25, 2003) at Three Fountains Nursing Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gideons International, 2900 Labaron Rd., Nashville, TN 37214.

Born Dec. 22, 1919, in Passaic, N.J., to George H. and Bertha C. (Cohn) Stauffer, she married William Walter Gardipee on Dec. 22, 1938, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

A licensed vocational nurse, Mrs. Gardipee worked at the VA Domiciliary in White City, retiring in 1982.

She enjoyed singing opera, playing the piano/organ, cooking, entertaining and traveling.

She was a member of the Medford First Baptist Church and Gideons International.

Survivors include a daughter, Carol Hunt of La Habra, Calif., and one grandson.

She was preceded in death by her husband, four sisters and one brother.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

J. Melvin Morrison
The funeral for J. Melvin Morrison will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at East Lawn Funeral Home, in Bloomington, Ill., with the Rev. Philip S. Kaufman officiating.

Burial will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Life Center for Independent Living, 2201 Eastland Drive, Suite 1, Bloomington, IL 61704.

Mr. Morrison, 67, died Friday (July 25, 2003) at his residence.

He was born Dec. 7, 1935, in Lamb, Ky., to Rondal and Blanche (Mayes) Morrison. On Feb. 20, 1960, in Bloomington, Ky., he married Joyce C. Zimmerman, who died in 1981.

A graduate of the Illinois School for the Deaf, Mr. Morrison retired in 1998 after 38 years as a printer for the Bloomington, Ill., Pantagraph.

He was a member of the Bloomington Normal Deaf Club, nad had served on the board of directors for the Life Center for Independent Living.

He enjoyed watching Illinois State University basketball and was a member of the booster club.

Survivors include his mother, Blanche Ingersoll of Fayetteville, N.C.; his children, Brian of Ashland, Judy Vahldick of Tinley Park, and Jeffrey of Bloomington; seven grandchildren; one sister, Joann Seymour of Fayettesville, N.C.; and many nieces and nephews.

Arrangements: East Lawn Funeral Home.

Juan Schwendener
The graveside service for Juan Schwendener will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland, with Pastor Don Baldrica of the First Baptist Church of Ashland officiating.

Mr. Schwendener, 93, of Ashland died Saturday (July 26, 2003) at his home.

Born June 3, 1910, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, he attended schools in Switzerland, where he completed his grammar and secondary education.

He attended business college in Geneva, Switzerland and the Royal Agriculture College in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England.

Mr. Schwendener was chief of forests with the Guatemalan Minister of Agriculture where he worked with native agriculture graduates teaching forestry with his focus on water conservation.

To patrol forest land, he learned to fly, which became a lifelong interest.

Mr. Schwendener came to the U.S. in 1947 and attended the School of Forestry at Oregon State College, later purchasing a 100-acre tree farm and one-man sawmill in Camas Valley.

He married the former Mildred Hickman, who survives, on July 14, 1951, in Glide.

In the fall of 1956, he enrolled in the teaching program at what was then Southern Oregon State College in Ashland, receiving his degree in 1960.

He taught French and Spanish at Ashland Junior High School before his retirement in 1974.

Following retirement, the Schwendeners served four months with the Andes Evangelican Mission, teaching children in Bolivia.

They enjoyed RV traveling for many years, spending winters in California, Arizona and Nevada.

Survivors include three sons, John C. of Medford, Richard of Ashland, and Alan E. of Long Beach, Calif.; one brother, Eugene of Guatemala; one sister, Edith Gibson of Guatemala; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

Funeral arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Rose I. Storey
The memorial service for Rose Irene Storey will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Ashland. Private entombment will be in Mountain View cemetery Resthaven Mausoleum, Ashland.

Mrs. Storey, 80, of Ashland, died Wednesday (July 23, 2003) at Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland.

Memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church, Building Fund, 660 Frances Lane, Ashland, OR 97520, or the Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders Association, Inc., Southern Oregon Chapter, 2860 State St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Nov. 6, 1922, in Alexis, Ill., to Elmer Russell and Grace Marie Pattison.

She graduated from Aledo High School in Aledo, Ill., in 1940.

She then attended Monmouth College and graduated from the University of Illinois.

During World War II, she was trained in physical therapy at the Mayo Clinic. She earned a master’s degree in home economics-foods and nutrition, from San Diego State University in 1972.

Mrs. Storey moved to California in 1946, where she met James William Storey. They were married June 21, 1948, in Seaton, Ill.

They moved to Ashland in 1982, where they were members of Grace Lutheran Church, Ashland. He died in 2000.

Survivors include two sons, Mark L., Guadalajara, Mexico, and Robert R., Pasadena, Calif.; and a daughter, Kristina L. Storey, Ashland. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Stephen and Donald Pattison.

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Lelah Marion Baker Hardin
The memorial service for Lelah Marion Baker Hardin will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Harvest Baptist Temple in Medford. Private interment will be at Woodville cemetery in Rogue River.

Mrs. Hardin, 82, of Rogue River, died Wednesday (July 23, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mission Fund at Harvest Baptist Temple, 2001 S. Columbus St. Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Aug. 19, 1920, in Wimer, to Henry and Minnie Neathammer Baker. On Nov. 7, 1936, in Grants Pass, she married Ira Del "Tex" Hardin, who died in 2000.

For years, Mrs. Hardin was involved in the Ladies Missionary Circle of Evans Valley Bible Church teaching Sunday School, Bible School and serving as secretary/treasurer.

She was known for her maple bars. She enjoyed reading her Bible, spending time with her family, traveling and making quilts.

Survivors include a son, Frank, Eagle Point; two daughters, La Vena Hess, Shady Cove, and Molly Ramsey, White City; two sisters, Ruth Davis, Wimer, and Vera Soffell, Rush Valley, Utah; 10 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Elmer Baker; two sisters, Bertha Tepovac and Alice Moran; and an infant granddaughter, Theresa Ann Hess.

Arrangements: Hull and Hull Funeral Directors, Grants Pass.
