Bernice M. Thetford
Bernice Marilyn Thetford, age 63, longtime former Medford resident, and a thirty-seven year resident of Oak Harbor, WA, died at her home on Thurs., July 31, 2003.

Mrs. Thetford was born in Westwood, California, on Nov. 6, 1939, to Ole Skoog and Dorothy Fern (Kurtz) Skoog. She was raised in Medford, OR, where she graduated from high school. She graduated from Southern Oregon College in Ashland, where she received a BS degree in Medical Technology. She also received a Medical Technicians Certificate from the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center in Portland. Bernice is survived by her two daughters; three grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law; also, many other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her husband Oris on Mar., 17, 2001 and by a nephew, Arik Skoog in Nov. 2002.

Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Burley Funeral Chapel in Oak Harbor, WA.

A Service of Remembrance will be held at St. Stephens Episcopal Church, 555 N.E. Regatta Dr., Oak Harbor, on Wed., Aug. 13, 2003, at 1:00 p.m., The Rev. John Lambert officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, in memory of Oris Thetford, c/o Jo Balda, Treasurer, P.O. Box 345, Oak Harbor, WA 98277. Arrangements and cremation under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel, 30 S.E. Ely St., Oak Harbor, WA 98277.

Ernest R. Francis
Ernest R. Francis, 87, of Canyonville, passed away at his home, Tuesday (Aug. 5, 2003). He was born July 9, 1916, in Deadwood, Calif., to Joseph and Edna (Olves) Francis.

At two years of age his family moved to Henley Hornbrook, CA., where Ernie grew up and received his education.

On June 27, 1937 he was united in marriage to his loving wife Lela. They enjoyed 63 years together.

Ernie served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy, in Okinawa as a See Bee. Upon returning to the states they moved to Ashland for a short time, and then for many years in Medford, where he worked as a long haul truck driver.

Later Ernie and Lela moved to Stevenson, WA. where he owned and operated logging tucks.

They enjoyed horseback riding the the Washington woods as a pastime.

After retiring and selling his log trucks they came to Myrtle Creek to retire which resulted in owning and operating "Ye Old Wishing Well" a craft and variety store for eight years .

One day on the street a friend asked him to drive one of his logging trucks as a substitute driver for a few days which turned out to be two years.

Ernie was very active in the community with Lela, and even more so after her death in Feb. 2000.

He was a member of the VFW in Tri City as well as the local chapter of the AARP.

Ernie became involved with the Seniors Escorting Seniors, and helped form the group and was their first volunteer driver until illness prevented him from driving for the public.

Then after moving into Forest Glen Senior Residence, where everyone loved him, he transported people from there, and everywhere in his own car.

Ernie was a member of Myrtle Lodge No.38 Independent Order of Oddfellows and life member to Canyon Encampment No. 79 which is the graduated branch of OddFellowship.

Among the many other things he accomplished he was instrumental in constructing and organizing the shuffleboard in Millsite Park. In 2001 he was honored with the Oregon Volunteer Ambassador Award and traveled in the state capital where it was presented by the Governor of Oregon.

Ernie was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lela and four brothers and sisters.

Survivors include daughter Charlene and husband Ralph Hanson of Riddle; and son Eldon and his wife Linda Francis of Olympia, WA.; grandchildren, Jennifer Francis and her husband Bill Tripp of Gig Harbor, WA., and Brian and wife Jeana Hanson of Sutherlin, OR., as well as 2 great-grandchildren, Brittany and Ashley of Sutherlin.

A funeral service will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, 2003, at 1 p.m., at Myrtle Creek Family Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. June Fothergill, of the United Methodist Church in Myrtle Creek. Also participating in the service will be Myrtle Lodge No. 38 of Independent Order of OddFellows.

A private inurnment will take place at Henley-Hornbrook cemetery in Hornbrook, Calif.

Immediately after the service a gathering will be held and a meal served for family and friends at Myrtle Lodge No. 38 OddFellows Hall, at 221 N. Main, Street in Myrtle Creek.

Services have been entrusted to Myrtle Creek Family Funeral Home.

Raymond Dale Kellum
No Services are planned for Raymond Dale Kellum, 98, of Talent.

He died Tuesday, (August 5, 2003) at home. He is survived by his daughter, Virginia Baron of Ashland and one son, Raymond Kellum Jr. of California. Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller Simonsen Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Ashland.

Harley Hopkins Hall Jr.
The memorial service for Harley Hopkins Hall Jr. will be at 2 p.m. Friday, at Ruch Community Bible Church. Rev. Earl Best will officiate. Private family inurnment will be in Jacksonville cemetery.

Mr. Hall, 80, of Jacksonville, died Monday (Aug. 4, 2003) at Providence Medical Center.

Memorial contributions can be made to: Wildnerness Trails, P.O. Box 4655, Medford, OR. 97501.

He was born on Dec. 28, 1922 in Crescent City, Calif. On Aug. 30, 1946 in Reno, he married Vernice Thompson, who survives. He lived in the Rogue Valley most of his life.

Mr. Hall served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.

He worked as a timber faller for Bob Jacks, for many years.

Mr. Hall enjoyed mining, fishing, hunting and hiking.

In addition to his wife survivors include; two daughters, Marlene Robinson, of Tacoma, Wash., and Judy Hall, of Vancouver, Wash, ; two brothers, Lee Hall of Jacksonville, and Richard Hall, of San Diego, Calif.; two sisters, Stella Rametes, of Talent. and Elizabeth Patch, of Monroe, Wash; two grandchildren; and three great-grand children. He was preceded in death by a son, Dennis Hall, and one brother, Edward Hall.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary.

J.B. Gray
J.B. Gray, 80, formerly a Medford resident, died Monday (Aug. 4, 2003) in Carthage, MO.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, at Hllcrest Memorial Park, Medford Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Jean Alvira Helen Clark
Jean Alvira Helen Clark, 71, of Prospect, died Thursday (July 31, 2003) at her home. No services will be held.

Mrs. Clark was born on June 3, 1932 in Minot, ND. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1985 from San Francisco.

She was a homemaker and worked in banking, and as a phone operator in Calif. She loved the town of Prospect.

Jean was the beloved mother of survivors, Valarie Sobolewski, of Oxford, MI., and Renee Clark, of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; her brother, Charles Lee Arthur, Spokane, Wash.; and her sister, Margaret Ann Owens, of Spirit Lake, ID.

Arrangements: Memory Gardens Mortuary, Medford.

Laurel 'Slim' M. Wahner
The memorial service for Laurel "Slim" M. Wahner will be at 1 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 9, 2003) at Hillcrest Chapel with Chaplain Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice officiating. Inurnment will be in Cedarlawn Cremation Garden in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Laurel, 84, of Medford, died Sunday (Aug. 3, 2003) at a foster care home in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Americare, 3853 Arrowhead Dr., Medford, Or. 97504 He was born Sept. 26, 1918 in Milton-Freewater, OR. to Frank M. and Josie Myrtle (Geiss) Wahner. On Sept 26, 1943 in Echo, OR. he married Catherine V. Vohs, who died Dec. 31, 2000.

Laurel was a mill worker, and owned a trailer court for 23 years in Ocean Park, WA.

He moved to the Medford area in 1989 from Washington.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cats, and country music.

Survivors include: a brother, Eldon Wahner, Hermiston; a half sister, Nina Colcord, Hermiston; three grandchildren, Cathy Wilson, Medford, Tony Schiller, Pfleuserville, Texas, Mary O'Neal, Eldorado Springs, MO.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park & Mortuary, Medford 773-6162.

Anthony Glen Bearden "Tony"
A gathering of friends and family of Anthony Glen Bearden, 31, of Central Point, will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, at Lima Family Erickson Mortuary, in San Jose, Calif. The funeral service will follow in Calvary Catholic cemetery, in San Jose.

Mr. Bearden died July 28, 2003, as a result of a drowning accident, in the Rogue River.

He was born Oct. 18, 1971 in Nuremberg, Germany.

In 1990 he married Anna Maietta in San Jose, they later divorced.

He moved to the Rogue Valley from San Jose, Calif. 7 years ago. He was co-owner and operated "Classic Transport" a freight transportation company in the Rogue Valley.

He is survived by a loving extended family of 180 strong, including daughter, Stephanie Bearden, (age 14), Grants Pass, a son, Anthony Bearden (age 11), Grants Pass; his mother and step-father, Sharon & Johnny Ramos, San Jose, Calif.

Beatrice 'Bea' Matheus
The graveside service for Bea Matheus will be held at 11 a.m., Fri., Aug. 8, at the Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mrs. Matheus, 82, of Sam's Valley, died Sun. (Aug. 3, 2003) at her home, from stroke complications.

She was born on Jan., 14, 1921, in Detroit, Mich. She married Leonard Matheus in Feb. of 1940, in Yuma, Arizona. Her husband died Aug. 6, 1988. Her enjoyment of bowling, supporting various charities, and environmental issues, were her greatest interests.

Mrs. Matheus is survived by a daughter, Janice Schulz, Newport, OR.; a son, Norman Matheus, Sam's Valley; four grandchildren, Lauri Christoferson, Newport, OR., Mark Schulz, Gales Ferry, CT., Chandra Matheus, Gresham, OR.; Jason Matheus, White City, OR.; and one great-grandchild, Devin Christoferson, Newport, OR. Also, a son-in-law, Leo Schulz, Newport, OR., and a daughter-in-law, Laura Matheus, White City, OR.

Memorial contributions may be made to Dogs for the Deaf, 10175 Wheeler Rd., Central Point, OR. 97502.

Loren D. Roatcap
The funeral service for Loren D. Roatcap, 83, of Medford, will be held Friday, Aug. 8 at 2 p.m., at the Memory Gardens Memorial Park Chapel in Medford. Committal will follow in Memory Gardens Mausoleum.

He was born May 4, 1920, in Olathe, Colo., to Charles and Ethel Roatcap.

Mr. Roatcap served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1953.

He was a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service.

On Oct. 2, 1966, in Sunland, CA., he married the late Loretta Gale who died in 1999.

Mr. Roatcap moved to the Rogue Valley 20 years ago from Glendale, Calif. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

He enjoyed playing horseshoes and was an American History Buff.

Survivors include four step-sons; one sister, Ethel Hein, Colorado Springs, Colo.; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great- grandchildren.

William 'Bill' Vanderpool
Bill Vanderpool, a life-long resident of Medford and the Rogue Valley, died at his home on August 2, 2003.

Bill was born at Sacred Heart Hospital on August 12, 1952; and was the only son of Mildred Ruth Vanderpool and Lloyd Taylor Vanderpool.

He attended Medford schools, and was employed with the Jackson County Roads Department for over 30 years.

Bill enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting and gun collecting, animals, children, and spending time with friends.

He is survived by his mother, Mildred Vanderpool, of Medford; 2 sisters, Louise Doran, of Medford, and Lois Smith, of Central Point; and his close friend, and partner, Rhonda Driskell.

Those wishing to make contributions in his memory, may do so to, the Jackson County Humane Society.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home.

A service is planned for Friday, August 8, at 10 a.m., at Perl Funeral Home, on Siskiyou Blvd., Medford.

William R. Snyder, Jr.
Bill Snyder Jr., died Saturday, August 2, 2003, as a result of an automobile accident.

Memorial services will be Thursday, Aug. 7, 2003 at 1 p.m., at the Moose Lodge, 226 N. Ross Lane, Medford.

A private memorial service arranged by his cousin, Troy Snyder, for Bill's friends, will be Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at 3 p.m., at 1918 Cherry Street Medford, (corner of Cherry and Stewart).

Bill was born on July 11, 1969, in Santa Rosa, Calif. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Hawaii in 1972, at the age of 4.

Bill graduated from Phoenix High School in 1988. He graduated from Universal Technical Institute, in Phoenix, Arizona, as a diesel mechanic in 1990.

He worked as a diesel mechanic, sales representative, and a general contractor.

Bill is survived by his children, two daughters, Kylie and Ronique Snyder; one son, Billy Snyder, all of Medford; his mother, Diane Pace, Medford; his father William Snyder, Sr., Medford; a sister, Shannon Tzortzis; and a niece, Una Mary Tzortzis, of Pacifica, Calif.; his fiance', Shawna Kerrigan, who he affectionately called "Biscuit, " and children, Brenna, Chanell and Jacob Kerrigan, and John and Shaylee Berry, With a love of Harley Davidson motorcycles and cars "he liked to go fast!" Those close and dear to him believed "He died young, but lived free." He will be greatly missed.

Bill had a strong love of nature and enjoyed spending time at the family homestead, where he will be laid to rest.
