Margaret A. Bowdoin
The memorial service for Margaret Arlene Bowdoin will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday (Aug 6, 2003) at the Grants Pass Mennonite Church on New Hope Rd. Private family entombment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park Mousaleum, Medford.

Mrs. Bowdoin, 82, of Shady Cove, died Thursday (July 31, 2003).

Memorial contributions may be made to the New Hope Christian School, 5961 New Hope Rd., Grants Pass, Or. 97527.

She was born on Dec. 8, 1920 in Erwin, SD, to Arden Mortimer and Hazel Julia (Coulson) Tyrrell. On Aug. 24, 1941 in Rogue River, she married Pastor Joseph Avery Bowdoin, who survives.

Mrs. Bowdoin worked as a bookkeeper/ accountant at Medford print shops. For 18 years she worked as the Librarian at Shady Cove and Elk Trail schools. She moved to Shady Cove from Ashland over 50 years ago, and to Grants Pass about two months ago.

She and Joseph attended faithfully the Rogue Valley Bible Chapel in Medford. She also enjoyed all family activities, hosting missionaries, embroidering, quilting, and the outdoors.

In addition to her husband Joseph, she is survived by two sons, Terell, Grants Pass, Stephen, Dundee, Or.; two daughters, Sharon Esau, La Vera, Spain, Karen Olson, Three Hills, Alberta, Canada; three sisters, Arletta (Terri) Bullock, Escondido, Calif., Maxine Stearns, Lafayette, Calif., Mabel Tyrrell, Grants Pass; a brother, John Tyrrell, Grass Valley, Calif.; 22 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Eva Mildren, and a grandson, Andrew David Olson.

Merl C Howard
Mr. Merl C Howard, 81, long-time resident of Ashland passed away Thursday, July 31, in the home of his daughter, Pamela Nelson of Ashland, Oregon.

He was born September 12, 1921 to Benjamin Franklin Howard and Olive Howard in Round Valley Idaho.

Mr. Howard moved to Ashland for the first time in 1935, after his father's death. He attended Junior High, while living with his grandmother. He returned to Idaho, soon thereafter.

He worked as a ranch hand, for the Civilian Conservation Corps, and for Weyerhaeuser, until he enlisted in the Army Air Force. He rose to the rank of Tech Sergeant with the 510th Fighter Squadron, 405th Group as a propeller specialist. During WW II he served in the U.S., England, Normandy, Northern France, the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. It was an intense source of pride that he was a part of one of the turning points in WWII, the D-Day invasion, as well as the events that followed, leading to the allied victory in Europe. He was honorably discharged in November 1945.

After WWII he returned to Ashland, and worked for Weyerhaeuser Corp. He married Patricia M.L. McCoy in 1947, and they had two daughters. Though he and his wife divorced, they continued to be great friends and allies for the rest of their lives.

In the early 1950's, he opened A-1 Cabinet Shop, and eventually started building homes. He built many homes, commercial buildings and housing complexes in Ashland and the Southern Oregon area. He was the building contractor for the current Ashland Daily Tidings building. He built his last custom home in his 60's. He continued to build furniture and do small construction jobs until 2 years ago.

He was an avid outdoorsman. He was a prolific reader with particular interests in World history, Northwest history, the classics and the natural sciences.

His ex-wife preceded Mr. Howard in death. His companion of many years Gail Schmaltz also preceded him in death. Mr. Howard is survived by his good friend and companion of recent years, Lois Severson.

Family members that survive him are Denise Howard Moon, her husband Kevin Moon and their child, Cameron Moon, his only grand child, of Vancouver Washington. His Daughter, M. Pamela Nelson and her husband Steven Nelson of Ashland, Oregon. His sister, Jane Roberts, and her husband, Bill and their children of Auburn, CA. A sister, Aloha Hays and her children. Mr. Howard is also survived by his 20-year old cat, "Mr. Cat." At the time of his death Mr. Howard was in the home he built for his daughter and her husband, surrounded by furniture he built for them.

He was a man that will be sorely missed by his family and friends. He was a man of integrity and a man of his word. He was not a materialistic man, and often extended a hand to those less fortunate, whether giving food, or helping someone repair a car.

Those who wish may pay their respects from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland. A gathering of family and friends will be held to celebrate his life, Saturday, September 13, 2003, 4 p.m., at the home of his daughter, Pamela Nelson. Please call 541-488-3178.

Richard E. Lippincott
Richard E. Lippincott, 88, retired foreign service officer, died July 13, in Hendersonville, N.C.

Mr. Lippincott graduated from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania in 1939. He worked in the Dept. of Agriculture food stamp program from 1939 to 1943, when he joined the Army Medical Corps.

He was recruited by the Office of Strategic Services (a CIA predecessor) for a short time at the end of WWII. Then he went to Greece with the UN Relief and Rehabilitation Administration from 1944- 1948, followed by various positions with the Economic Corporation Administration (the Marshall Plan) and successor agencies, such as AID, in Lebanon, Yugoslavia, Washington DC, and Argentina.

In 1972 Mr. Lippincott and his wife, Ann Steelman Lippincott, retired to Medford, where he was on the City Council and raised cattle.

They moved to Hendersonville in 1985. Mrs. Lippincott died in April 2002.

Survivors include two children; a daughter, Carol Lippincott Trippel of Indianapolis; and a son James W. Lippincott of Kalamazoo, Mich; and two grandchildren.

Bernard K. Knutsen
The funeral for Bernard Kristoffer Knutsen will be 1 p.m Monday, August 4, at Hillcrest Chapel, 2201 N. Phoenix Road, Medford. Committal services will follow in the Court of Honor at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mr. Knutsen, 89, of Jacksonville, died Wednesday (July 30, 2003) at a foster care home in Central Point.

He was born July 16, 1914 in Portland, Or. to Knut and Stina Andria (Sande) Knutsen. On July 7, 1952 in Vancouver, Wash. he married Winifred Hughes, who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley from Portland in 1951.

Mr. Knutsen served in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a member of Ironworker Local #29 in Portland, Masonic Lodge #207 in Tigard.

He enjoyed fishing, woodcutting, gardening and birding.

Survivors, besides his wife Winifred, include a daughter, Linda Buscher of Santa Fe, NM; a granddaughter, Andria Nickel, and a great-grandson, Graham Kristopher Nickel, both of Grand Junction, CO.; two sisters, Thelma Stewart of Portland, Or. and Bertina Sawyer of Prineville, Or. He was preceded in death by a sister, Sylvia Arnold.

Friends may pay their respects Sunday, August 3, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hillcrest Mortuary, 2201 N. Phoenix Road, Medford, 97504.

Joseph Allen Keith Jr.
A memorial service for Joseph Allen Keith Jr., will be at 11 a.m. Monday, at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Keith, 36, of Medford died Wednesday (July 30, 2003) at his home.

He was born July 14, 1967 in Las Vegas, Nevada. On May 14, 1998 in Central Point he married Laura Walton who survives. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1994 from Port Hueneme, Calif.

Mr. Keith worked as a certified veterinarian technician for Banfield, the Pet Hospital in the PetSmart Store in Medford for the past 7 years.

Joseph was an avid hunter and fisherman. He had a black belt in Karate and he loved his wife and daughter.

In addition to his wife, survivors include; a daughter, Stevie Lee Keith of Medford; his parents, Joseph & June Keith of Medford; two brothers, Rickey Roy Keith of Medford and Ralph Allen Vezina, of San Luis Obispo, Calif.; two aunts Sandy and Patty; an Uncle, Bud Keith, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Arrangements are being handled by Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives.

Viola Ada Westover
The graveside service for Viola Ada Westover will be at 4 p.m. today at Hillcrest cemetery in Medford.

Mrs. Westover, 95, of Salem, formerly of Eagle Point, died Tuesday (March 18, 2003) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eagle Point Community Bible Church, 27 S. Shasta Ave., Eagle Point, OR 97524, or the Medford Gospel Mission, 409, N. Front St., Medford, OR 97501.

She was born Jan. 3, 1908, in Knob Lick, Mo., to Sarah "Sally" and John Bayless. She studied nursing at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis before her 1931 marriage to Jeff John Westover.

After moving to Oregon in 1946, she worked as a nurse at Sacred Heart Hospital (now Providence) and Community Hospital in Medford. She retired in 1964 after working 11 years at the Camp White Infirmary. She moved to Salem in 1984.

She was known for her stories, wit, quilting and cooking.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Ann Aydelott, Salem, and Nancy Jane Gratsinger, Eagle Point; two brothers, Robert Lee Bayless, Knob Lick, Mo., and Forrest Bayless, Farmington, Mo.; four grandchildren; and four great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Jeff Westover; a son, Jimmy Lee; and a sister, Elva Wright.

Guste Amelia Galliher
The memorial service for Guste Amelia Galliher will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Skylark Assisted Living in Ashland. Pastor Tony Schultz of Grace Lutheran Church will officiate.

Mrs. Galliher, 90, of Ashland, died Sunday (March 16, 2003) in Ashland.

She was born Oct. 10, 1912, in Rock County, Minn., to Arnie and Gertie Fresvik. On Sept. 15, 1937, in Sioux Falls, S.D., she married David Isaac Galliher, who died in 1986.

Mrs. Galliher moved to the Rogue Valley 10 years ago from Springfield. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Ashland.

She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.

Survivors include three daughters, Susan Robinson, Williams, Sharon Galliher, Eugene, and Janice Faye Wainwright, Port Orford; five sons, David A., Louisville, Texas, Gerald, in New Zealand, Steve Ronald and Jason Carter, both San Francisco, and Terry Lee, Lincoln City; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters and a son.

Frank Joseph Ward
Frank Joseph Ward, 66, of Medford, died Dec. 24, 2002, in Medford. A private service will be held.

He was born Jan. 22, 1936, in Cambridge, Mass.

Mr. Ward was a supervisor for Lockheed Aircraft for 30 years, retiring in 1990. He moved to the Rogue Valley 15 years ago from Santa Clara, Calif.

He served in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in England.

Mr. Ward enjoyed scroll saw woodworking, reading, and jigsaw puzzles.

Survivors include a son, Peter, Fremont, Calif.; three daughters, Clara Rowe, Medford, Theresa Wilhelm, Byron, Calif., and Trish Dones, Campbell, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Dorothy Rose Ward
Dorothy Rose Ward, 64, of Medford, died Monday (March 17, 2003) in Medford. A private service will be held.

She was born April 1, 1938, in Braintree, England, to John and Rose Welham. In 1957, in Pattiswick, England, she married Frank J. Ward, who died in December 2002. They moved to the Rogue Valley 15 years ago from Santa Clara, Calif.

Mrs. Ward was a homemaker. She enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles, sewing and needlepoint.

Survivors include a son, Peter, Fremont, Calif.; three daughters, Clara Rowe, Medford, Theresa Wilhelm, Byron, Calif., and Trish Dones, Campbell, Calif.; a sister, Margaret Sheppard, in England; four brothers, John, Ron, Dudley and Don Welham, in England; and four grandchildren.

Grace Roth Hunter
Grace Roth Hunter, 88, of Medford, died Monday (March 17, 2003) at a local foster home. A private service will be held in California.

She was born Feb. 19, 1915, in Las Vegas, N.M., to John and Adeline (Roth) Regier. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from San Francisco State College in 1939 and a master’s degree from Stanford University in 1952. On Dec. 19, 1953, in Pacific Grove, Calif., she married Donald Hunter, who died in 1979.

Mrs. Hunter was an elementary school teacher, reading specialist and school librarian in Monterey, Calif. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1999 from Monterey, Calif.

She enjoyed church, Bible study, teaching Sunday school and gardening.

Survivors include a daughter, Sally Jung, Medford; two sisters, Esther Oleari, San Rafael, Calif., and Winnifred Wilber, San Diego; a brother, Jon Regier, Syracuse, N.Y.; and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Victoria Escher.

Jody Raye Brand
Jody Raye Brand, 48, of Central Point, died Friday (March 14, 2003) in Medford. A private service will be held.

He was born Feb. 10, 1955, in Bellflower, Calif., to Jake and June Shope Brand. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1972 from Bellflower, Calif.

Mr. Brand was a member of Foothills Baptist Church in Medford.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, kids and building birdhouses.

Survivors include two sons, Joey and Justin, both Albany; three daughters Julie, Jessie and Janelle Brand, all Albany; his mother, June Brand, Central Point; a brother, Jay, Central Point; and a sister, Joann Brand, Central Point. He was preceded in death by his father, Jake; and a brother, Jack.

Barton R. Oliver
The family and friends of Barton Robert Oliver are invited to an open house from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today at 5923 Table Rock Road, Central Point.

Mr. Oliver, 43, of Central Point, died Friday (July 25, 2003) near Ashland.

He was born June 18, 1960, in Medford, to Betty and Winfred Oliver. He attended first through third grades at Fall Creek Elementary School in Copco, Calif.; and fourth through seventh grades at Jackson Elementary School in Yreka, Calif. He graduated from Union High School in Yreka, Calif. He attended College of the Siskiyous in Weed, Calif., and earned awards in welding in high school and college. On March 22, 2003, in Medford, he married Debbie Moore, who survives.

Mr. Oliver became a journeyman lineman through the IBEW No. 659 apprenticeship program in 1985. He had worked in line construction since that time.

He enjoyed spending time with his wife, family and friends, hunting and fishing, the outdoors and his work.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Russell Cobb, Eureka, Calif.; his parents, Central Point; a brother, Cooper, Central Point; a sister, Tamara G. Keith, Payette, Idaho; and one granddaughter.
