Mildred E. Rogers
Mildred E. Rogers, 94, of Templeton, Calif., formerly of Ashland, died June 27, 2003, in a care facility in Templeton.

The memorial service was held July 5 at the Atascadero Bible Church. Pastor Tom Ferrell conducted his grandmother’s service, assisted by his father, Charles Ferrell.

She was born Aug. 27, 1908, in Spray, to Delle and David Baxter. She graduated from Monmouth Normal School in 1928. On March 23, 1929, she married her college sweetheart, Earl Rogers, who survives. They made their home in Ashland, both teaching in local schools. In 1947, the family moved to Medford.

Mrs. Rogers continued teaching and serving as a librarian in Medford schools until her retirement.

She and her husband were active in their community, schools, and church. She joined her husband in advocating organic gardening and had a keen interest in landscape architecture. After moving to San Luis Obispo County, Calif., in 1999, she continued this avocation at their new home, which was a showpiece of landscape beauty in their senior community.

Mrs. Rogers traveled extensively both in the United States and abroad.

She was an avid gardener, a collector of antiques, and a Portland Trailblazers basketball fan. She enjoyed visiting her family and grandchildren and square dancing.

Survivors, in addition to her husband of 74 years, include a daughter, Earline Ferrell, Templeton, Calif., a son, Roy Rogers, Los Altos Hills, Calif.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Reese Family Mortuary and Crematory, San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Rosabelle C. Smith
Rosabelle C. Smith, 81, of Medford, died June 20, 2003, at her home. A private service will be held.

She was born March 8, 1922, in Sabina, Ohio, to Walter E. and Alfa Arlene (Darbyshire) Carter. On Feb. 21, 1943, in Sabina, Ohio, she married Raymond L. Smith, who preceded her in death by 10 years. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1987 from Pebble Beach, Calif., where they had lived for more than 20 years. For the past 15 years, she maintained residence in Medford and Newport.

Mrs. Smith worked in accounting for the federal government in Ohio for many years, and at S.A.F.E. Credit Union in Sacramento, Calif. In retirement in Pebble Beach, she was a wedding consultant for Pacific Grove Methodist Church, where she also was a member.

In Medford, she was active in Mended Hearts and was a member of the First Methodist Church. She was also active in many garden clubs and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include a son, William C., Medford; a daughter, Rose Ann Decker, Colusa, Calif.; a brother, John E. Carter, Centerville, Ohio; a sister, Martha De Bold, Monroe, Ohio; four grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Perl Funeral Home, Medford.

Edythe A. Dotson
Edythe A. Dotson, 72, of Grants Pass, died July 11, 2003, at her son’s home in Rogue River. A private service is planned.

Kenneth Ray Karpins
The funeral for Kenneth Ray Karpins will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Church of God in Medford. Pastor John Wiuff will officiate. The graveside service will follow at Memory Gardens Memorial Park.

Mr. Karpins, 38, of Central Point, died Monday (July 14, 2003) at his home.

He was born July 6, 1965, in Riverside, Calif., to Andrew and Betty Karpins. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1998 from Watsonville, Calif. On Sept. 9, 2002, in Grants Pass, he married Stephanie McManus, who survives. Mr. Karpins was the restaurant manager at Burger King in Ashland.

He enjoyed all sports, golf, and spending time with his family.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Perry Ray, Medford; two daughters, Elizabeth Karpins, Medford and Jennifer Renee' Karpins, Central Point; his mother and stepfather, Betty and Al Grice, Central Point; two sisters, Karlena Mazza, Hanford, Calif., and Kathleen Hesse, Rio Linda, Calif. He was preceded in death by a sister, Christine Shideler.

Friends may pay their respects from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

Calvin ‘Cal’ Gertsch
The graveside service for Calvin "Cal" Gertsch will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Hawthorne cemetery in Grants Pass. Pastor Wes Winn of the First Christian Church will officiate. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Grants Pass.

Mr. Gertsch, 84, of Grants Pass, died Wednesday (July 16, 2003) at his home.

He was born Dec. 1, 1918, in Columbus, Neb. On Sept. 7, 1941, he married Doris Curry, who survives. They moved to Grants Pass in 1979 from California.

Mr. Gertsch was a repairman for heavy road equipment prior to his retirement.

He enjoyed gardening and fixing things.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a son, Marvin, Harbor; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert; and a daughter, Sharon Gertsch.

Nikola B. Vukcevic
The funeral for Nikola B. Vukcevic will be held Monday at St. Innocent Russian Orthodox Church in Rogue River. The procession will leave Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford, at 9 a.m. The Revs. David Lubliner and Seraphim Cardoza will officiate. The graveside service will follow at Antioch cemetery in Central Point.

Mr. Vukcevic, 62 of White City, died Thursday (July 17, 2003) at his home.

He was born Jan. 25, 1941, in Beograd, Serbia-Montenegro, to Blazo Jakov and Danica (Djordjevic) Vukcevic. On Sept. 4, 1966, in St. Sava Monastery, Libertyville, Ill., he married Ljiljana Pantic, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1992 from Milwaukee.

Mr. Vukcevic worked as an electronics technician in various industries, retiring in 1992.

He enjoyed fishing, boating, farming and animals.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Blazo, White City, and Peter, Eagle Point; a daughter, Darinka Williams, Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Zora Dimitrijevic and Zlatana Pavlovic, both Mladenovac, Serbia; and three grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a memorial prayer service at 7 p.m. at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

Maurece Pearl Lininger
A celebration of life and memorial service for long-time Ashland resident Maurece Pearl Lininger will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, at the First Presbyterian Church in Ashland.

Mrs. Lininger, 87, died Thursday (July 17, 2003) at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Ashland Schools Foundation, 100 Walker Ave., Ashland, OR 97520.

She was born Maurece Pearl Roberson on Dec. 18, 1915, in Mesa, Ariz., the second of 10 children born to Pearl McKenzie and Charles Edward Roberson. The family moved to Ashland in 1923 and lived on North Main Street, in the current Coolidge House Bed and Breakfast. They moved to Grants Pass when the Southern Pacific Railway closed its Ashland office, but returned to Ashland and settled into their family home on B Street in 1932. She graduated from Ashland High School in 1933 and attended classes at Southern Oregon Normal School (now Southern Oregon University) the following year.

On Oct. 10, 1934, she married Ashland native Earl Lininger. He died in 1993, after 58 years of marriage.

Mrs. Lininger, along with her husband and members of the Lininger family, built several local businesses including Independent Truck Lines, Beagle Lumber Company, and M.C. Lininger and Sons, Inc. (now LTM). In the early years of the company’s development, she traveled with her husband and children to remote rock-crusher sites throughout Oregon, setting up camps and cooking for crews.

Mrs. Lininger and her husband were dedicated supporters of Ashland children and schools. They established the Earl E. and Maurece Lininger Family Scholarship that is awarded annually to an Ashland High School graduate. In 1991 they led the Grizzly Homecoming parade as Mr. and Mrs. Ashland High School.

Survivors include two sons, Gregg and Earl W. "Bud, " both Ashland, a daughter, Nancy Milhoan, of Medford; a brother, Winfield Roberson; and two sisters, Mary Mayberry, Eugene, and Venita Frey, Portland; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Three brothers, Maxwell Roberson, McKenzie "Buzz" Roberson, and Duane Roberson, and three sisters, Clara Ann Burdic, Laverne Berry and Charlene Burdic .

Arrangements: Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Maybelle F. Keller
A memorial luncheon in honor of Maybelle F. Keller will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 9, in Sioux Falls, S.D. Interment will be on Aug. 8, at Riverside Memorial cemetery in Aberdeen, S.D.

Mrs. Keller, 96, formerly of the Rogue Valley, died May 31, 2003, in Colorado Springs, Colo., where she had lived for the past six years.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of the Tri-lakes United Methodist Church, 183 N. Washington, Monument, CO 80132 or to St. Joseph’s Indian School in Chamberlain, S.D.

She was born May 16, 1907, in Mound City, S.D. to Theodotus (Theo) and Lyda Reed Wosnuk. On July 7, 1937, in Mitchell, S.D., she married Dr. Emil Theodore "Ted" Keller, who preceded her in death. After 30 years of practice, he retired from the Johnson Clinic in Rugby, N.D., and they moved to Oregon and bought a home on the Rogue River.

Survivors include a son, Col. (Ret.) Kenneth F. Keller, Monument, Colo.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Reed Theodore Keller; and two sisters, Alice Nichols and Vivian Bailey.

Arrangements: Dove-Witt Family Mortuary, Fountain, Colo.

Barney William Martin
Barney William Martin, 95, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at his home. No service is planned.

He was born Nov. 30, 1907, in Ashton, Neb. On Dec. 13, 1947, in Nevada, he married Darlene Carlson, who preceded him in death. He moved to the Rogue Valley 50 years ago from Klamath Falls.

Mr. Martin was a logger before becoming a construction worker. He worked with Ausland Construction until his retirement.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Martin was a member of the Fruitdale Grange.

He enjoyed reading, fishing and working on his cars.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Martin, Grants Pass.

William ‘Bill’ Harold Toney
The funeral mass for William ‘Bill’ Toney will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland.

The Rev. Joseph Betschart will officiate. Entombment will follow at Resthaven Mausoleum in Ashland’s Mountain View cemetery.

Mr. Toney, 80, of Phoenix, died Thursday (July 17, 2003) at his home.

He was born Sept. 25, 1922, in Lake City, Calif., the son of Harry James Toney and the former Josephine Elizabeth Quirk.

On May 27, 1941, in Reno, Nev., he married the former Edna Mary Darst, who preceded him in death on Nov. 8, 1998. They moved to Ashland in 1955 from Lakeview.

Mr. Toney worked for the City of Ashland as sexton of the Mountain View cemetery. He retired in 1986.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church. He enjoyed hunting and traveling in recreational vehicles.

Survivors include eight sons, David Toney, Ashland, Larry Toney, Phoenix, Harry Toney, Dayton, Mike Toney, Springfield, Pat and Ron Toney, Molalla, Jeff Toney, Milwaukie and Tom Toney, Denver; five daughters, Cindy Ramp, Medford, Julie Brazil, La Pine, Julienne Dow, Las Vegas, Louise Meredith, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Mary Viglione, Denver; four brothers, Ervin Toney, Ashland, Kesner Toney, Fort Bidwell, Calif., John Toney, Sacramento, Calif., and Jimmy Odbert, Redding, Calif.; four sisters, Kathleen Baker and Virginia Grove, Cederville, Calif., Mildred Johnstone, Red Bluff, Calif., and Carolyn Joines, Las Vegas; 37 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Friends may pay their respects at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Terry Lee Smith
The memorial service for Terry Lee Smith will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Prospect. Vicar Jack Brown will officiate.

Mr. Smith, 51, of Prospect, died Thursday (July 17, 2003) at his home.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel, Central Point.

Dan Oscar Talbott
The memorial service for Dan Oscar Talbott will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Hillcrest Chapel in Medford. Pastor Paul Hagedorn of Providence Medford Medical Center will officiate. Interment will be in Cedarlawn Cremation Garden at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mr. Talbott, 66, of Medford, died Sunday (July 20, 2003) at his home.

He was born July 18, 1937, in Glorieta, N.M., to Butler Roscoe and Mona Virginia (Ladd) Talbott. He moved to the Rogue Valley 60 years ago from New Mexico. On April 19, 1986, in Talent, he married Lois M. Dunham, who survives.

Mr. Talbott was a self-employed heavy equipment operator working in road construction and logging.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Mike, Medford, and Dan K., Eagle Point; three stepdaughters, Sherri Hallett, Eagle Point, Lorelei Powers, Portland, and Mary Ann Moreno, Auburn, Wash.; two brothers, Ross and Bob, both Talent; 13 grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Memorial Park and Mortuary, Medford.

Bill Monroe Snyder
The funeral for Bill Monroe Snyder will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. The Rev. Erv Voogd will officiate. Interment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Snyder, 74, of Central Point, died Monday (July 21, 2003) at his home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Community Health Foundation, Hospice, 1111 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Aug. 13, 1928, in Fresno, Calif., to Boyde and Nan Looney. On March 5, 1977, in Las Vegas, he married Callie A. Bock, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1988 from California.

He served in the U.S. Navy and was the chief executive officer for Tri Valley Growers in Modesto, Calif., and for Kern Industries in the City of Industry, Calif. He retired in 1986.

Mr. Snyder enjoyed fishing.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include four sons, Syd, Monroe, Conn., Blair and Wayne, both Modesto, Calif., and Bruce, Healdsberg, Calif.; two daughters, Cathy Woiken, Upland, Calif., and Christine Boothe, Medford; a sister, Bonnie Schmadeke, Central Point; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
