Patricia A. May
A celebration of the life of Patricia A. May will be held Saturday at Cornwell Colonial Chapel in Woodburn.

Mrs. May, 69, of Central Point, formerly of Woodburn, died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at her home.

She was born in 1933 in Oakland, Calif., to Donald and Hattie Clark. The family moved to Oregon, where she attended school and married Richard F. May on July 16, 1955. He also died on July 15, in 1964.

Mrs. May enjoyed nursing, gardening and bird watching, tole painting and pressed flowers, and reading her Bible.

Survivors include three sons, Gerald, Central Point, Daniel, Medford, and Michael, in Los Angeles; three daughters, Terrie Niehus, St. Paul, Jeannie Woodley, Mount Angel, and Laura Kirsch, Vancouver, Wash.; 27 grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

Billy ‘Bill’ Warren Randell
The memorial service for Billy "Bill" Warren Randell will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Blessed Hope Fellowship, 95 Ingalls Lane, Wilderville. Pastor Phil Anderson will officiate.

Mr. Randell, 58, of Grants Pass, died Monday (July 14, 2003) at Three Rivers Community Hospital.

He was born Sept. 23, 1944, in Corsicana, Texas. In 1947, he moved to Oregon from Corsicana. He was a 1962 graduate of Grants Pass High School and spent most of his life in Grants Pass.

Mr. Randell worked as a farmer, in erosion control, as a log truck driver, in family businesses and as a caregiver.

He enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and spending time with friends.

Survivors include two daughters, Lori Dajani, Martinez, Calif., and Joyce Peterson, Bellevue, Neb.; a son, Walter A., Beaverton; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter A. and Pearl Randell; and a sister, Donna Bohannon.

Arrangements: Grants Pass Funeral Alternatives and Crematory.

D. ‘Clay’ Gangnes
The funeral for D. "Clay" Gangnes will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Church of the Nazarene. Pastors Kevin Gowland and Charlie Marsolini will officiate. Interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Scenic Hills Memorial Park in Ashland.

Mr. Gangnes, 58, of Central Point, died Saturday (July 12, 2003) in Central Point.

Memorial contributions may be made to Open Hands Open Heart, PMB 189, 711 Medford Center, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Oct. 12, 1944, in Fargo, N.D., to Ludvig and Myrtle Gangnes. On Aug. 28, 1966, in Kulm, N.D., he married Donna Blumhardt, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1972 from Phoenix, Ariz.

Mr. Gangnes worked in general contracting and manufacturing, residential building and trolleys.

He served in the National Guard.

Mr. Gangnes was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, where he led Bible study and prayer group. He was also a member of Africa West Partners, a group that supports missions in French speaking Africa, Open Hands Open Heart, which supports missions in Third World countries, and the Work Witness Group, which does construction mission work.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two daughters, Michele Surgeon and Marti Hill, both Central Point; a son, Kawika Joe', Portland; a brother, Larry, Argusville, N.D.; a sister, Linda Cooley, Ashland; and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may pay their respects from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

Wellington L. Kilby
Wellington L. Kilby, 84, of Talent, died Monday (July 14, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.

He was born Oct. 27, 1918, in Rainier, Wash., to Jim and Floy Kilby. He grew up in southern Washington and northern Oregon, graduating from Lincoln High School in Portland. On Dec. 17, 1939, he married Joan A. Ringo, who survives.

In 1950, the family moved to Coos Bay from Portland, where he began his long careers in the lumber industry, and as a general contractor. Mr. Wellington, known as "Wimpy" to his colleagues, became safety engineer for Weyerhauser, then personnel director for Georgia Pacific, retiring in 1975. During this period, he built numerous luxury homes in the Barview area and also developed subdivisions and commercial properties in the area.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater and was decorated with the Purple Heart, with the Bronze Star for bravery twice, and the Silver Cross.

The family moved to the Rogue Valley in 1983, where he enjoyed woodworking.

Survivors in addition to his wife of more than 63 years, include two sons, Ronald and Jerald.

Edythe A. Dotson
Edythe Dotson, 72, of Grants Pass, died July 11, 2003, at her son’s home in Rogue River. A private service is planned.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lovejoy Hospice, 939 S.E. Eighth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526, or Food & Friends, Jackson County Chapter, P.O. Box 4666, Medford, OR 97501.

She was born July 26, 1930, in Blue Earth, Minn., the only child of Walter and Madge Jablinske. In 1947, she married E.L. Sahlie, and they moved to Oregon in 1950. After divorcing in 1955, she moved to Grants Pass where she lived for 48 years. She married John Dotson, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Dotson was a dietary supervisor for Josephine Memorial Hospital for a number of years. She later sold real estate for both Southern Oregon Land and ERA.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, the Elks and the Eagles.

Mrs. Dotson enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles, knitting and crocheting and dancing.

Survivors include a son, Gene Sahlie, Rogue River; a daughter, Elaine Aschbacher, Eagle Point; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son.

Myrle Estelle Samples
Myrle Estelle Samples, 80, of Medford, died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A private service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be in Battiest, Okla.

She was born Nov. 14, 1922, in Battiest, Okla., to Sterling and Vallie Parsons. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1947, then moved to Portland and returned to the Rogue Valley in 1991. On Sept. 2, 1966, in Vancouver, Wash., she married I. Wayne Samples, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Samples worked for AT&T; for many years.

She enjoyed bowling, fishing, sports and spending time with her family.

Survivors include two sons, Bob Holt, Medford, and Gene Holt, Jacksonville; three brothers, Sterling, Dudley and Billy Parsons, all Battiest, Okla.; three sisters, Mary Hixson, Owasso, Okla., Mona Keffer, Ponca City, Okla., and Carolyn Hodge, Broken Bow, Okla.; three grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, Sue Davis.

Atha ‘Art’ Chris Saralecos
Atha "Art" Chris Saralecos, 71, of White City, died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. No service is planned. Inurnment will be in Eagle Point National cemetery.

He was born June 20, 1932, in Victoria, Texas, to Chris and Ernestine Saralecos. On Aug. 26, 1981, in Reno, Nev., he married Mary Ellen Hardman, who died in 2000. He moved to the Rogue Valley 25 years ago from Portland.

Mr. Saralecos served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He was a member of the Southern Oregon Kennel Club and enjoyed leatherwork.

Survivors include a son, Michael, Spokane, Wash.; a daughter, Carol Calvert, Portland; a brother, Alan, Refugio, Texas; a sister, Catherine Saralecos, Victoria, Texas; and four grandchildren.

Norma Jean Buell
Norma Jean Buell, 70, of Butte Falls, died Tuesday (July 15, 2003) at her home. No service is planned.

She was born Oct. 31, 1932, in St. Louis. She married Raymond Buell, who died in 1999.

Mrs. Buell was an executive secretary for Kaiser Permanente in Salem. She moved to the Rogue Valley in December 2002 from Portland.

Survivors include two sons, Robert, Vancouver, Wash., and Mark, Westminster, Colo.; a daughter, Katherine Owen, in California; 10 grandchildren; and nine great- grandchildren.

Arrangements: Hillcrest Mortuary, Medford.

Brent Stephen Castle
A celebration of the life of Brent Stephen Castle will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, 1205 Deborah Road, Newberg. The graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford. A celebration will follow at 3123 Madrona Lane, Medford.

Mr. Castle, 37, of Newberg, formerly of Medford, died Thursday (July 17, 2003) in Seattle of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (for research), 6501 S.W. Macadam Ave., Portland, OR 97239.

He was born Jan. 24, 1966, in Detroit, Mich., to Keith E. and Lavelle L. Castle. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Oregon. He moved to Portland from Medford in 1989.

Mr. Castle was a mortgage broker.

He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling and exploring other cultures, climbing, running and scuba diving.

Mr. Castle was a member of The Pro Group, Mazama Mountain Climbers and other organizations.

Survivors include his companion, Ann Robinson; his mother, Lavelle L. Castle; and three sisters, Karen L. Cruson, Elko, Nev., Julie L. Castle, Portland, and Christine M. Hammers, Seattle. He was preceded in death by his father, Keith E. Castle; and a brother, Craig T. Castle.

Robert A. Lovern
The memorial service for Robert A. Lovern will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Christian Church in Medford. Pastors Alicia Wolski and Jeff C. Holder will officiate.

Mr. Lovern, 67, of Medford, died July 17, 2003, at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 1900 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born Aug. 25, 1935, in North Powder to William and Viola Lovern. His family then moved to Sunnyside, Wash.

Mr. Lovern served in the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1957. He sang in the Air Force choir and had the opportunity to sing solo in a concert attended by then- Vice President Richard Nixon.

After completing his tour of duty, he moved to Prosser, Wash., where he ran a lumberyard and built homes for several years. He also served as acting pastor for the First Christian Church in Prosser and was active in the Chamber of Commerce. He sang the lead in two chamber-sponsored musicals, "Sound of Music" and "South Pacific."

Mr. Lovern moved to Eugene in the early 1970s and attended Northwest Christian College, majoring in Old Testament theology. During this time he owned and operated a cabinet shop. He also built and was the general contractor for the Valley Christian Church near Springfield.

He moved to Medford in 1979. On June 8, 1980, he married Cathy Jo (Aker) Majure, who survives.

Locally, Mr. Lovern worked as an insurance agent for AAA/Oregon. For the last 15 years, he was a financial consultant with Salomon Smith Barney.

He was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and served on several board positions. He also sang in the choir and was well-known for his deep bass voice.

Mr. Lovern was a master craftsman. He enjoyed traveling in his motorhome, fishing and watching the Seattle Mariners.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a stepdaughter, Robin Brown, Medford; four children from a previous marriage; two brothers, Jack, Yakima, Wash., and William, Anchorage, Alaska; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters.

James ‘Jim’ C.T. White
The memorial service for James "Jim" C.T. White will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, at Eagle Point National cemetery. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn of Providence Hospice will officiate.

Mr. White, 72, of Medford, died Tuesday (July 22, 2003) at his home.

He was born Jan. 17, 1931, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. On Feb. 7, 1988, in Las Vegas, he married Mary F. Wilder, who survives.

He moved to the Rogue Valley in April from Valencia, Calif., where he had lived for 30 years.

Mr. White served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1970. He also worked as an insurance agent.

He was a member of the Vista Valencia Senior Men’s Club and the Valencia Golf Club.

Mr. White enjoyed golf and gin rummy.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three daughters, Carol L. White, Medford, Sandra L. White, Santa Clarita, Calif., and Penny L. White, Lonsdale, Ark.; a son, Jim, Santa Clarita; and one grandchild. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edie.

Vance Alton Pearce
Vance Alton Pearce, 88, of Central Point, died Monday (July 21, 2003) at his son’s home in Jacksonville. The memorial service will be held at a later date. Inurnment will be at the Logtown cemetery in Jacksonville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Hospice, 2600 Siskiyou Blvd., Suite 100, Medford, OR 97504, or the Alzheimer’s Association Southern Oregon Chapter, 10 Crater Lake Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

He was born May 18, 1915, in Eagle Point. His grandparents were D.J.S. Pearce and Sarah Fryer Pearce, early settlers in Jackson County. His maternal grandfather, J.J. Fryer, had a donation land claim in Eagle Point and was known as the "Father of Eagle Point."

Mr. Pearce graduated from Eagle Point High School in 1933. On May 31, 1947, in Minden, Nev., he married Claudine VanBuren, who survives.

Mr. Pearce was a gold miner in Alaska. When he returned from Alaska, he signed up with the U.S. Navy after Pearl Harbor. He served in the "Lighter than Air" Blimp Squadron No. 51 in Trinidad and remained in the Navy until he retired as a chief petty officer in 1964. He then worked in construction and helped build Lost Creek Dam and fish hatchery.

He was a member of the Labor Union, Gold Prospectors of America and the Lost Dutchman Mining Association. He and his wife were foster parents in Hawaii, Washington and Oregon for many years.

Mr. Pearce enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and gold mining.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Jack Davenport, Springfield, and Bob Tius, Jacksonville; two daughters, Jerry Baumgardner, Lyons, and Lori Katwyk, Roseburg; a sister, Dorothy Knox, Central Point; 16 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Scott; a grandson, Jon Tius; a granddaughter, Christie Castle; a brother, Ansil; and a sister, Roberta LaConte.
