Ollie Helen (Hart) Speirs
A graveside service for Ollie Helen (Hart) Speirs will be held 2 p.m. Monday at Siskiyou Memorial Park.
Mrs. Speirs, 91, of Medford, died Tuesday (June 10, 2003) at Hearthstone Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Speirs was born March 6, 1912, in Star, Idaho, the youngest of 15 children of Frank and Emma (Levander) Hart. She was married
to Verne Hanning Speirs in 1934 in Medford. Her husband, who served as superintendent of schools in Ashland, died in 1986.
She has been in the Rogue Valley since returning from Klamath Falls in 1955.
She attended elementary school grades in La Grande and graduated from Talent High School in 1930.
She was a homemaker.
She enjoyed numerous civic activities, her church and teaching Sunday school.
Survivors include sons Verne, Sacramento, Calif., and Lyle, Bend; a daughter, Janet Varnell, Medford; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by all 14 brothers and sisters.

Betty ‘Jeannie’ Ellenberger
A private service will be held for Betty "Jeannie" Ellenberger at 10 a.m. Tuesday in her daughter’s rose garden. The Rev. Flo Bohnert will officiate.
Mrs. Ellenberger, 76, of Medford, died Thursday (June 12, 2003) at her home.

She was born Oct. 30, 1926, in Shawnee, Okla., to Otto and Eula Frederick. She was married
to John Ellenberger from 1947 to 1965.
She moved to the Rogue Valley from Whittier, Calif., in 1996.
She enjoyed her grandchildren, natural and ancient history, jewelry, elephants and roses.
She is survived by a daughter, Christine Mason, Medford; two sisters, Irene Rogers, Wildomar, Calif., and Mary Frederick, Las Vegas, N.M.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Frederick.

Marland ‘Bob’ Jensen
Marland "Bob" Jensen, 82, of Rogue River, died Saturday (June 7, 2003) at his home. A private service was held at Chapel of the Valley Funeral Home, Grants Pass.
He was born Sept. 23, 1920, in Bellingham, Wash. On May 14, 1981, in Carson City, Nev., he married
Berneice Rash, who survives.
Mr. Jensen was a building contractor before retirement. He moved to Rogue River in 1992 from Blue Eye, Mo.
He served in the Coast Guard and later joined the Navy. He served during the Korean War.
Mr. Jensen enjoyed camping, fishing and working with wood.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include five sons, Darrell Jensen, Burlington, Wash., Robert Jensen, Mill City, and James Leonard, Gregory Leonard and Bradley Leonard, all San Diego; a daughter, Julie Ann Stieman, Santee, Calif.; and a sister, Maxine Wallace, Bothell, Wash.; and eight grandchildren.

Claudine K. Wright-Jones
Claudine Kelley Wright-Jones, 71, of Medford, died Friday (June 6, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. A private service will be held.
She was born March 25, 1932, in Killeen, Texas. She moved to California in 1968 from Texas, and to Oregon in 1992. In December 1989, in Reno, Nev., she married
Homer Jones, who died in April of this year.
Mrs. Wright-Jones owned Claudine’s, a clothing company in Southern California.
She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Mrs. Wright-Jones enjoyed traveling.
Survivors include three sons, Jack Resner, Jacksonville, David Resner, Dana Point, Calif., and Andre Resner Jr., Bedminster, N.J.; a brother, Garland Kelley, Killeen, Texas; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a sister, Marie.

Donald E. ‘Don’ Evans
Donald E. "Don" Evans, 84, of Talent, died Saturday (June 7, 2003) at Hearthstone. No service is planned.

He was born Dec. 2, 1918, in Greeley, Colo., to Fred and Lydia (Scott) Evans. He graduated from Greeley High School. On Oct. 22, 1948, in Salinas, Calif., he married
Jayne Lee Phipps, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley 21 years ago from Auburn, Calif.
Mr. Evans was a retired machinist with Aerojet Corp.
He enjoyed camping, traveling and fishing.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include a daughter, Donna DiLeo, Auburn, Calif.; a stepson, David Huddleston, Pocatello, Idaho; a sister, Mary Brown, Pueblo, Colo.; two brothers, Ray, Littleton, Colo., and Robert, Gold River, Calif.; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Vincent.

Danny Emery Lovett
Danny Emery Lovett, 65, of Shady Cove, died Monday (June 9, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center. No service is planned.
He was born Jan. 18, 1938, in Vernon, Texas, to Marie E. Baze and Frank G. Lovett. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1953 from Shafter, Calif., and attended Phoenix High School from 1954 to 1956. On Nov. 20, 1956, in Phoenix, he married
Phyllis Nichols, who survives.
Mr. Lovett was a barber.
He enjoyed cars and fishing.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, David Doyle, Shady Cove, and Dennis Dean, Los Angeles; a brother, Paul, Bakersfield, Calif.; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry G., and Ronnie R. Lovett.

Margaret R. Hall
Margaret R. Hall, 76, of Grants Pass, died June 4, 2003, at her home. A private service will be held.

She was born Jan. 28, 1927, in Portland. Her family moved to Grants Pass in 1947. On May 28, 1949, in Grants Pass, she married
Earl Hall, who died in 1985.
A former model, Mrs. Hall sang with her two sisters on radio station KGW during the war and was later crowned Miss Grants Pass in 1948. She and her husband owned and operated L.B. Hall Funeral Home and Hillcrest Crematory.
Survivors include three sons, Michael, Mason and Mitchell.

Bruce Wallace Butte
The memorial service for Bruce Wallace Butte will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 22, at the Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. The Rev. Joe Raymaker of Montague, Calif., will officiate.
Mr. Butte, 83, of Jacksonville, died May 5, 2003, at his home.

He was born May 1, 1920, in Seattle, to Cecil and Olive Butte.
After attending the Cornish College of Arts, he served in World War II with the Army Corps of Engineers during the second wave of the Okinawa invasion.
Following several years of working as an art director and designer for various advertising agencies, Mr. Butte established the creative agency of Butte, Herrero and Hyde in San Francisco. In 1952, in Inglewood, Calif., he married
Ann Gilman, who survives. They moved to Jacksonville in 1970 from the Bay area and he became the art director at Harry and David.
In addition to his membership in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the San Francisco-based Bohemian Club, he supported many charitable and cultural endeavors, including Britt Festivals, Medford Rotary Club, Boston Club, Pacific Bible College, Mobility Unlimited, Jacksonville Booster Club and Volunteer Fire Department, Southern Oregon Historical Society, and Rogue Art Gallery, with contributions of his paintings. As an ordained minister with the traditional Episcopal Church (Anglican), he also helped spearhead the renovation of the historic old Methodist church in Jacksonville.
As an oil and watercolor artist, Mr. Butte enjoyed conducting art classes for 22 years after his retirement in 1980.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Timothy, Jacksonville, and Burney, Altus, Okla.; and four grandchildren.

Frank Alix
Retired Major Frank Alix, 91, of Medford, died Sunday (June 8, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center. No service is planned.
He was born Sept. 21, 1911, in Holyoke, Mass., to Philias and Delina Alix. On March 14, 1966, in Tokyo, he married
Mitsuko "Mitzi" Ohashi, who survives. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1970 from Massachusetts.
Major Alix served in the U.S. Army for 23 years, retiring in 1956. He served in Burma, in Germany during the Nuremberg Trials and in Turkey leading Turkish troops during the Korean War. In Japan, he and his wife owned a restaurant.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Medford First Ward. He was also a member of the Eagles and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Major Alix enjoyed bingo and set bingo at the Senior Center. He also loved fishing, especially at Diamond Lake and Crater Lake, hunting and playing poker.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include three sons, Ven and Anthony, both Seattle, and Derek, Coquille; a daughter, Michele Boswell, Pocatello, Idaho; a sister, Noella Marusinski, Port Charlotte, Fla.; 13 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilfred; and three sisters, May Alix Considine, Yvonne "Eva" Alix, and Beatrice Alix Jodoin.

Howard W. Sowles Jr.
Howard W. Sowles Jr., 68, of Central Point, died Saturday (June 7, 2003) at Medford Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center. No service is planned.

He was born July 8, 1934, in Yuba City, Calif., to Howard Sr. and Winnifred (Adams) Sowles. He attended Tulelake High School and Oregon State University.
Mr. Sowles worked for Southern Pacific Railroad, retiring after 29 years. He moved to the Rogue Valley in 1993 from Sacramento, Calif.
Survivors include a son, James Alan, Keno; two daughters, Theresa Sowles-Dafgard, Chicago, and Beth Donelle Beltz, Monmouth; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Cena L. Kinney
The graveside service for Cena L. Kinney will be at 11 a.m. today at Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.
Mrs. Kinney, 88, of Medford, died Sunday (June 8, 2003) at a foster care home.
Due to incorrect information provided by the funeral home, her first name was misspelled in Tuesday’s obituary.
Elsie Jeanne Stiehl
The funeral for Elsie Jeanne Stiehl will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Hope Presbyterian Church in Rogue River. Pastor Brian Boisen will officiate. Interment will follow at Woodville cemetery in Rogue River.
Mrs. Stiehl, 60, of Rogue River, died Thursday (June 5, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.
She was born April 28, 1943, in Honolulu. She graduated from Rogue River High School in 1961. In 1963, in Grants Pass, she married
Ronald W. Hutchin. They were married
for 25 years. She lived in Tokyo, Biloxi, Miss., and Anchorage, Alaska, before returning to Rogue River.
Mrs. Stiehl was a member of Beta Sigma Phi in Biloxi, Miss., and the Southern Oregon Hawaiian Club, (Hawaii Hui).
She enjoyed genealogy, family history, and collecting antiques, coins and family heirlooms.
Survivors include a daughter, Ronda J. Hutchin, Dallas, Texas; two sons, Anthony W., and Charles W., both Rogue River; her father, Willis H. Stiehl, Rogue River; two brothers, Theron W. Stiehl, Rogue River; and Robert J. Stiehl, Phoenix; and one grandchild. She was preceded in death by her mother, Nani E. Stiehl.
