June Elliott Richardson
June Elliott Richardson, 74, of Medford died Friday (Oct. 31, 2003) at her home. No services are planned.

Mrs. Richardson was born on June 15, 1929 in California, MO to Albert and Verna Elliott (Wilson). She moved to Oregon in 1941 from Missouri.

She worked for Griffin Creek Elementary School for 28 years as a teachers aide.

Mrs. Richardson enjoyed picking mushrooms and huckleberries.

Survivors include; a son, Robert Riggs of Medford; a daughter DeAnne Wilson of Eagle Point; 4 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Abbey Funeral, Medford.

Kathryn O. Howell
A memorial service for Kathryn O. Howell will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003 at Church of God Holiness, 401 Broadway, Rogue River. Rev. Carl Meyers will officiate.

Mrs. Howell, 85, of Medford, died Monday (Nov., 3, 2003) in Medford.

She was born on Dec. 9, 1917 in Damar, KS. On Oct. 29, 1935 in Scott City, KS she married Harley B. Howell who preceded her in death in 1980.

Survivors include; 6 sons; 5 daughters; 2 brothers; 2 sisters; 30 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, 2 children, and 1 grandchild.

Friends and family may pay their respects from noon to 4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003 at Conger Morris Funeral Directors, 715 W. Main St., Medford .

Owen E. Briles
His battle with cancer finally over, Owen died at home at the age of 75 on November 3, 2003, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Manhattan, Kansas, on August 9, 1928, to Helen (Wood) and Owen Briles, Sr. After joining the U.S. Army in 1946, he served in Korea, Japan, Hawaii, and Vietnam. While stationed in Yokohama, Japan, he met and married Aiko Sasukura on December 1, 1952. During his military career, he earned several medals for excellent service including the Army Commendation Medal for service in Vietnam. Upon retiring in 1967, he and his family settled in Phoenix, OR, where he eventually accepted a job with Medford Moulding in White City. Moving to Eagle Point in 1975, he continued working for Medford Moulding.

After his retirement from Medford Moulding in 1994, he enjoyed his hobby of woodworking, building many fine pieces of furniture. He was an avid fisherman spending many days at Hyatt Lake. He also enjoyed gardening and watching the birds at the feeding station he built in his backyard.

Owen was active in his community, serving on the Fourth of July committee and cooking at the Annual VFW/Grange Fourth of July breakfast. He was an active member of VFW Post 6184 holding several positions including Post Commander and Quartermaster.

Owen is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Aiko; two daughters, Helen Cook and her husband Richard Cook of Eagle Point, and Judy McCulloch of Central Point; and one son, Martin Briles of Trail. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Taunya Myers and her husband Carl Myers of Mount Vernon, WA, Katina Briles of Botswana, Africa, Jessica Cook of Eagle Point; and great-grandsons, Michael Cook and Bailey Myers of Mount Vernon, WA. He also leaves behind his half-brother, Larry Murphy of Phoenix; and numerous other friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Owen E. Briles, Sr., his stepfather, Lloyd Murphy, and his mother, Helen Murphy.

Memorial services will be held at the VA National cemetery in Eagle Point on Friday, November 7th at 2 p.m.

Pastor James E. Seely
The funeral service for Pastor James E. Seely will be held at 11 a.m. Friday (Nov. 7, 2003) at the Apostolic Faith Church on Sunrise Ave., in Medford. Burial will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Apostolic Faith Church, 285 Sunrise Ave., Medford, OR 97504.

Pastor Seely, 97 of Medford, died Sunday (Nov. 2, 2003) at his home.

He was born July 1, 1906 in Snohomish, WA to George Adelbert and Lucy Katherine (Waggoner) Seely.

Pastor Seely had lived in the Rogue Valley most of his life and had ministered for over 50 years at various Apostolic Faith Churches in the area. He had also worked for the U.S. Forest Service.

Survivors include a sister, Evelyn Clark; a brother, Eugene Seely both of Grants Pass; and a granddaughter, Claudette Goodman of Mississippi.

Friends may pay their respects Thursday, Nov. 6, from 3 to 7:30 p.m., at Hillcrest Mortuary, 2201 N. Phoenix Rd., Medford.

Ransom Harris Smith
Funeral services for Ransom Harris Smith will be held Thursday, Nov. 6, 2003 at 2 p.m. in Siskiyou Chapel. Pastor Paul Hagedorn will officiate.

Those who wish may pay their respects Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2003 from 5 to 8 p.m.

Mr. Smith, 90, of Hornbrook, CA died Saturday, (Nov. 1, 2003) of natural causes, in Medford at his daughter, June's home.

He was born Ransom Harris Smith on Feb. 2, 1913, in Butte Falls, OR.

Mr. Smith, the patriarch of a large southern Oregon family, was a descendant of settlers who arrived in 1853 on the Oregon trail.

On March 21, 1931 at the Newman Methodist Church in Grants Pass, OR, he married Grace Newman Smith, who preceded him in death on June 17, 1995, after 64 years of marriage.

Ransom and Grace started their family in Grants Pass, then moved to Hilt, CA 5 years later in 1936. While raising their family in Hilt, Mr. Smith worked 36 years for the Fruit Growers Supply Company, as a mill worker; lumber piler (for 27 of those years), carpenter, night watchman, and various other positions in the mill. He was a volunteer fire fighter and worked, throughout his years in Hilt, on the various town and forest fires that threatened the community.

He was a veteran of the California State Guard during WWII.

After retiring from the mill in 1972, the Smith family moved to Hornbrook, CA in 1973.

Mr. Smith's second retirement came in 1995 after 18 years of working as a ranch hand irrigating over 1000 acres alone, and working cattle.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and made his last hunting trip with his four sons this Fall. Mr. Smith enjoyed camping and woodcutting with the grandkids, arrowhead and bottle collecting, carpentry, and gold panning/mining. He loved spending time with his family, sharing his knowledge or many colorful anecdotes and stories of times gone by. His twinkling sky-blue eyes and snowy white beard gave him the likeness of a slender Santa to the delight of many youngsters. He will be remembered with love, and missed.

Survivors include; 4 sons, Harvey Travis Smith of Medford, William Harris Smith of Crescent, OR; James Darrell Smith of Medford and Clayton Roger Smith of Central Point; 2 daughters, Joan Dolores Smith of Hornbrook, CA, and June Juanita Sprague, Medford; 2 brothers: Daniel Evensizer of Wimer, and Samuel Evensizer of Oregon City; 19 Grandchildren; 27 Great-grandchildren; 10 Great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace, his brother, John 'Red' Smith, 3 grandchildren, and 1 daughter-in-law.

Serving as pall bearers are grandsons, Charles Sprague, Darren Smith, Roger Smith, Larry Smith, Randy Smith, Douglas Smith and great-grandson Michael Newman Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Hospice.

Wilma Ruth Dunlap
The memorial service for Wilma Ruth Dunlap will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Shepherd of the Valley, Central Point. Father Jim Clifford of Shepherd of the Valley will officiate. Interment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mrs. Dunlap, 77, of Central Point, died Sunday (Nov. 2, 2003) at Providence Medford Medical Center.

She was born on Oct. 1, 1926 in Eureka, KS to Wm. & Mary Teter (Newby). On Oct. 26, 1945 in Eureka, KS she married Warren Dunlap. They recently celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. They moved to the Rogue Valley in 1946.

Wilma was a homemaker raising three wonderful daughters. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, her family being the most important part of her life.

She was a talented seamstress and had a passion for quilting. She made numerous quilted laps for nursing homes residents. She was a 4-H leader. She was an active parishioner of Shepherd of the Valley for many years helping the homebound during that time. Her love for children was shown by her service through childfaithing.

Survivors include; her husband, Warren Dunlap of Central Point; 3 daughters, Marcia Chapman of Medford, Pamela Dunlap of Medford, and Dana Berny of Astoria; 4 sisters, Judy Williams, Clara Houston, Martha Davis, and Sister Carolyn Teter; one brother, Robert Teter; 3 grandchildren, Brent Chapman of Livermore, CA, Jenipher Hawkins of Medford, Michelle Berny of Corvallis; and 3 great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Hawkins of Medford, Mackenzie Hawkins of Medford, and Leanna Chapman of Livermore, CA. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Theresa Pugh and Lois Bitler.

Eloise Inez Lineberger
The memorial service for Eloise Inez Lineberger will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Prospect. Pastor Jack Brown will officiate. Private inurnment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Lineberger, 75, of Prospect, died Sunday (May 18, 2003) at her home.

She was born Feb. 25, 1928, in Bexley, Miss., to William and Minnie (Brelan) Ball. On April 10, 1944, in New Augusta, Miss., she married Samuel Lineberger, who survives. They moved the Rogue Valley in 1981 from Southern California.

Mrs. Lineberger was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking and fishing.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include three sons, Kevin, Central Point, Samuel, Moreno Valley, Calif., and James, northern Oregon; a daughter, Ann Borden, Fontana, Calif.; a brother, Lynn Ball, Rio Linda, Calif.; a sister, Marjorie Ball Gipson, in Mississippi; 12 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Friends may pay their respects from noon to 7:30 p.m. today at Conger Morris Funeral Directors, Medford.

Francis ‘Frankie’ W. Nicklin
A celebration of the life of Francis "Frankie" William Nicklin will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rogue Valley Christian Church in Medford. Pastor Kenne Horton will officiate.

Frankie, 3, son of Sue Nicklin, died Friday (May 16, 2003) at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Rogue Valley Medical Center Foundation, Pediatrics, 2825 E. Barnett Road, Medford, OR 97504.

He was born April 1, 2000, in Medford.

Frankie was part of Abraham Lincoln Elementary School’s Sparrow Program and enjoyed visiting the school and interacting with the "big kids."

He also enjoyed playing with his brothers, especially swordfighting, and planned to be a knight or a fireman.

Survivors include his mother, Sue Nicklin, Central Point; two brothers; and his grandparents.

Friends may pay their respects from 4 to 7 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday at Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, 550 Business Park Drive, Medford.

David ‘Lee’ Chaffee
The funeral for David "Lee" Chaffee will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hull & Hull Chapel in Grants Pass. Private interment will be at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Mr. Chaffee, 71, of Grants Pass, died Saturday (May 17, 2003) at Highland House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grants Pass.

Memorial contributions may be made to Lovejoy Hospice, 939 S.E. Eighth St., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

He was born April 8, 1932, in Ontario, Calif. On Oct. 5, 1952, in Riverside, Calif., he married Yvonne Binger, who survives.

Mr. Chaffee was a Korean War veteran. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant with the 224th Infantry Division, Medical Company motor pool. He received the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star and the Combat Medal Badge. He and his wife moved to Cave Junction in 1971, and recently moved to Grants Pass.

He enjoyed fishing in Alaska and spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters, Debi Rathbone, Karen Hatch, and Cathy Hughes; three sons, Randy, David and Tim; his mother, Ruth Chaffee; two sisters, Betty Jean Heaton and Joan Hand; four brothers, Floyd, Bill, Ted and Rodney; 11 grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters.

Friends may pay their respects from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Hull & Hull Chapel, Grants Pass.

Jeremiah Chamberlain
Jeremiah Chamberlain, 81, of Boring, formerly of Medford, died Saturday (May 17, 2003) at his home. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Jacksonville cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to a local hospice or Set Free Fellowship Church, 1025 Court St., Medford, OR 97501.

He was born Oct. 27, 1921, in Marle City, Ohio, to Harry Earl and Nora Marie (Stevens) Chamberlain. At age 15, he worked at a Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Idaho. On July 17, 1942, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, he married Janet Sue Smith, who died in 2001.

They made their home in Bellefontaine, Ohio, where Mr. Chamberlain began his career with Worthington Foods Inc. The family moved to Oregon in 1957, and made their home in Portland, where he started Worthington Foods on the West Coast. Eight years later, he began working in the medical field at United Medical Laboratories Inc., in sales and later as the director of research.

In 1982, he and his wife moved to Medford, and he retired one year later. They lived in Medford until September 2000, when they moved to Boring to be near their daughter and son-in-law.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

Mr. Chamberlain was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time at the library, bowling and fishing.

Survivors include four sons, Jeff, Jacksonville, Michael, Ashland, Ted, Berrien Springs, Mich., and Steve, Buchanan, Mich.; two daughters, Gayla Vick, Medford, and Penny Sue Crowe, Boring; two brothers, Jack, Sacramento, Calif., and Earl, in Florida; seven grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Sandy Funeral Home, Sandy.

Elizabeth Beals
Elizabeth Beals, 90, of Medford, formerly of Wells, Maine, died Sunday (May 18, 2003) in Medford. No service is planned. Her ashes will be scattered in the Bay of Maine.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Wells Public Library, Wells, ME 04090, or to a favorite charity.

She was born July 5, 1912, in Alfred, Maine, to Leon C. and Ella Nickerson Akers. She was a graduate of Deering High School in Portland, Maine, Gorham Normal School in Gorham, Maine, and the University of Southern Maine in Portland, Maine.

On June 25, 1932, in Alfred, Maine, she married Carroll P. Beals, who died in 1986.

Mrs. Beals taught school in Shapleigh and Alfred, Maine, and in Wells, Maine, for 22 years, retiring in 1976.

She was a member of the First Church of Christ Scientist.

Survivors include a son, Arthur L., Gold Hill; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger Morris, Central Point Chapel.

Iris Mae Clouse
Iris Mae Clouse, 79, of Sams Valley, died Thursday, November 20, 2003 at Providence Medford Medical Center.

Committal will be on Wednesday, November 26, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Eagle Point National cemetery. Chaplain Paul Hagedorn will officiate.

Iris was born on July 15, 1924 in Fullerton, California. She moved to Oregon in 1972 from Brea, CA. She was a resident in Jacksonville till 1994, when she moved to Sams Valley.

She was a Geriatric Nurse from 1966 till retirement in 1994.

Survivors include: daughter, Deanna Criswell of Sams Valley; 2 step-sons, Rick Clouse of Bridge City, Texas and Ronney Clouse of Sterling, Colorado; 8 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Orville "Pete" Clouse in 1991; son, Gary in 1996; and granddaughter, Darlene in 1996.
