William D. Bray
Aug. 31, 1913- Sept. 25, 2003 William Davenport Bray of Claremont, CA, formerly of Medford died Sept. 25, 2003, in Claremont. He was 90 years old. A memorial service has been held.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Methodist Church Missions 607 W. Main St., Medford, OR 97501, In his own words, 6 months before his death, "Billy" wrote this of his life.

"It was on August 31, 1913 that I first saw the light of day, being born in Norwood, Georgia, on a large cotton plantation owned by my grandfather, whom we were visiting. For four months I enjoyed that wonderful southern environment; then my father left the South to be a home missionary for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, out in the far west. Father was not only a lively and evangelistic preacher, but was later to become an especially skillful chiropractor as well, and the insights of these two disciplines mutually reinforced his pastoral ministry. It also needs to be reported that he was easily the best fisherman, sportsmanwise, for steelhead and salmon in the Rogue River Valley, our home. Except for father's being sent every three or four years to a new parish, our education through high school was virtually normal. It was further natural that college should be Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, since Emory University in Atlanta was really too far away. I rode to Dallas to enroll, traveling by motorcycle, and found lodging in the garage house (servant's quarters) of President Selecman of the University. For the first years, I did my own cooking and housekeeping; four years later I entered the dormitory and after three more years received the B.D. degree. My first parish was for two years in Turrell, Arkansas, then one year in Tigard, Oregon, and then came three years in the U. S. Army Air Corps as a Chaplain. While in uniform, and before the 22 months of overseas duty, I met Frances Hutchison, librarian at the National Training College for deaconess's and directors of Religious Education, and we were married on June 13, 1944. When the war was over, we served First Methodist Church in St. Helen's, Oregon for two years, and then responded to the call to serve as missionaries. Theological skills were augmented and refurbished in a three-year Ph.D. program at the University of Chicago, and then we went to Japan and were assigned to Kwansei Gakuin University, to teach Greek and New Testament history in the School of Theology, a post which was held for 28 years until retirement." At the university Bill was a professor with the most tenure. While teaching was his job, it was not enough. He went beyond the call of duty and looked around to find the next challenge and with the help of others, organized two churches at Takarazuka and at Shukugawa. Both churches were turned over to Japanese leadership, and both churches still thrive."

Bill served in the military as a Chaplain. During WWII he served on Saipan with the Army Air Corps. He directed the construction of an interfaith chapel and served the men who were involved with the long range bombing missions of Japan.

Until recently Bill and Frances made yearly pilgrimages to the reunion of men who served together in WWII. The men all still called him "Chappie" and he regarded this as an important duty to those who had served their country in trying times." He enjoyed, photography, astronomy, chess, and psychic studies, especially in the area of psychic and prayer healing.

Bill is survived by his wife of 59 years, Frances; 3 children, James and his wife, Barbara of Santa Rosa, CA; Margaret "Maggie" Heimbigner of Albany, OR; and Thomas Bray of Huron, SD. There are 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Having had nine brothers and sisters, Bill is now survived by his brother, Robert of Redding, CA, and by 2 sisters, Peggy George of Ashland, OR, and Nancy Robinson of Prospect, CN. There are multiple nieces and nephews.
