Lloyd W. Herbers
The memorial mass for Lloyd W. Herbers will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Father Liam Cary will officiate.

Mr. Herbers, 68, of Medford, died Monday (Dec. 15, 2003) at home, surrounded by his family.

Memorial contributions in Lloyd's name may be made to St. Mary's School Community Fund, St. Mary's School, 816 Black Oak Drive, Medford, OR. 97504.

He was born Feb. 1, 1935 in Bancroft, IA. On Aug. 29, 1959 in Ledyard, IA., he married Donna Olson, who survives. They have lived in the Rogue Valley for the past 33 years.

Mr. Herbers was a 1953 graduate of St. John's High School in Bancroft, IA.

He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, spending 18 months in the Azores.

Mr. Herbers worked for US West Communications for 42 years, retiring in 1994. After his retirement, he was commissioner of his Fantasy Football league.

He served on the St. Mary's School Board and was a Medford American Little League coach for 25 years.

Mr. Herbers enjoyed golfing, gardening and spending time with his family.

Survivors, in addition to his wife, include: sons Scott W. Herbers of Mission Viejo, CA., and Mike J. Herbers of Beaverton, OR.; daughters Tammy Herbers Pedersen of Modesto, CA., Shelly J. Miller of St. Louis, MO., and Jodi L. Setzer of Medford; a brother, Jerry Herbers of Torrance, CA.; a sister, Betty Thode of Fort Dodge, IA.; and 10 grandchildren. He was preceeded in death by: his parents; brothers Dennis, Merle, Harlan, and Vernon Herbers; and a granddaughter, Kiley J. Herbers.

Internment at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Perry A. 'Andy' Jones
A memorial service for Perry Andrew "Andy" Jones will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at the Jacksonville Presbyterian Church. Dr. Larry Jung will officiate.

Mr. Jones, 82, of Jacksonville, died Tuesday (Dec. 16, 2003) in Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to Jacksonville Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 297, Jacksonville, OR 97530.

He was born on Nov. 8, 1921 in Portland to Harriet K. Bewley and Buddington W. Jones. On Dec. 7, 1946 in Portland he married Mary Jane Thompson who survives. They moved to Jacksonville in 1955 and moved to Medford in 1963 from West Covina.

Mr. Jones attended Alameda grade school, and Grant High School both in Portland. He was a 1944 graduate of the University of Oregon.

He served in the 5th Air Force, 307 Airdrome Squadron, rank of Staff Sargent. He served 3½ years in New Guinea, Philippines, Okinawa, and Japan.

Mr. Jones owned and operated the Andy Jones Lumber Company, in Jacksonville, OR beginning in 1946. He was a sawmill operator in Grand Ronde, OR for two years, and he worked for Dant & Russell Wholesale Lumber for eight years.

He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi (uofo) for 50 plus years; the Hoo-Hoo International; the Rogue Valley Hoo-Hoo Club No.94, serving as President in 1965, and he was a member of the BPOE 1168 in Medford. He was a general manager of the American Legion Baseball from 1973 to 1978.

Mr. Jones enjoyed Christian education, gardening, fishing and golf.

In addition to his wife, survivors include; two sons, Gordon Andrew Jones of Albuquerque, NM, and Michael Walker Jones of Tualatin, OR; a daughter, Mary Cathryn Lombardo of Chandler, AZ; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Budd Jones.

George H. Mooberry
Feb. 22, 1906 ~ Dec. 15, 2003 George H. Mooberry, 97, of Medford died at Hearthstone Manor on Dec. 15, 2003. Inurnment will be at a later date at Cherokee Memorial cemetery in Lodi, CA.

Mr. Mooberry was born February 22, 1906 in Russell Gulch, CO to David and Mary (Scheiffer) Mooberry. He married Delpha Pearl Wright in Denver, CO on Sept. 6, 1928. He worked as the tax assessor in San Joaquin County, California. Mr. Mooberry moved to Medford from Los Gatos, CA in March of 2002. He enjoyed golf, reading and singing.

Survivors include: his daughters, Dolores Vietti of Phoenix and Landra Lindstrom of Eagle Point; eight grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife, Delpha in 1998 and a grandson, Douglas Higbee in 1982.

Loretta Rose Nelson
Loretta Rose Nelson, 80, of Medford, died December 19, 2003 at Hearthstone. A private family service will be held at graveside on Tuesday, December 23, 2003. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at Perl Chapel at Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Loretta was born in St. David, Illinois on April 12, 1923, the daughter of Roy and Marie (Duquenne) Tompkins. The family later moved to the Rogue Valley, where Loretta grew up and lived her whole life. She graduated from Phoenix High School in 1941, and married Charles F. Nelson on May 25, 1941. She was a homemaker and helped her husband on the family farm. She worked part time in a local orchard, and then as a cook for Southern Oregon Convalescent Center, eventually working her way up to head cook. Later, she co-owned and operated Pumpkin Hollow Day Care Center for 12 years with her daughter, Carolyn, until she retired.

Loretta enjoyed raising sheep and calves. She would buy day old calves at the auction yard and raise them by hand. She loved sewing, dachshunds, and traveling to Arizona in the winter. She made delicious macaroni and cheese and three bean salad. She was a great cook.

Loretta was an active member of the Brethern Church. She taught Sunday School and was a leader of the women's group, called "The Friendship Circle." She was always making sure that other children had a way to get to church functions. She and her husband also attended First Baptist Church in Medford for many years, as well as First Baptist Church in Quartzsite, Arizona. She was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ.

Loretta was affectionately known as "Granny" to her five lucky grandkids, and also to many other children whom she loved and cared for. Her grandkids got to grow up next door to her on the farm. They fished and camped with her. She was a huge part of their lives.

In addition to her husband of 62 years, Charles, she is survived by two daughters and son-in-laws, Linda and Mark Rasmussen of Shady Cove, Carolyn and Bernie Alexander of Medford; son-in-law, Skeeter Jackson of Medford; a sister, Lorraine Foresee of Wenatchee, WA; five grandchildren, Fred Alexander of Trail, Tony Weller of Medford, Heidi Shuck of Gold Hill, Julie Scull, of Medford, Gina Paxton of North Carolina; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Leroy Tompkins, and a daughter, Mertie Jackson.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, PO Box 596, Quartzsite, AZ 85346.

Maranatha Michael
Mrs. Maranatha Michael, 88, of Ashland, died Thursday, December 18, 2003 at her home.

Maranatha was born June 30, 1915 in Santa Ana, CA to George and Mabel (Preston) Studd. She attended business college in Pasadena, California and worked for several years in a loan office before marrying Walter F. Michael in 1937 in South Gate, CA. She and Walter moved to Ashland in 1946 and raised their family of three children. They owned and operated the A & B Sports Store on Main Street in Ashland for several years. After her children left home for college, Maranatha worked at the Oregon State Welfare offices as a medical clerk, until retiring at age seventy.

Maranatha was devoted to her family and friends, and very active in her church, the Ashland Foursquare Church. She loved to entertain guests in her home on Siskiyou Blvd., where she lived for 57 years. She was an accomplished, cook, baker and seamstress. She and her husband of 60 years enjoyed camping, family vacations, and reading.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Philip and Sydney Michael of Ashland; daughter and son-in-law, Evie and Randy Watt of Ashland; sister, Georgia Spradley of Covina, CA; and grandchildren, Greer and Wynn Michael of Ashland. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter F. Michael on December 1, 1997 and by her daughter, Marilyn Michael, in 1983.

The funeral service for Maranatha Michael will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, December 21, 2003 at Ashland Foursquare Church. Pastor Bill Halstead will officiate. Private interment will be in Scenic Hills Memorial Park, Ashland.

Scot Varley
A celebration of the life of Scot Varley of Medford will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at the Conger-Morris Funeral Home, 715 West Main in Medford. Mr. Varley, 59, died at home on Tuesday, December 16th.

Scot was born in Freemont, Ohio on October 12, 1944, to Jack and Kathleen Varley. The family later moved to Lancaster to raise their children. Scot excelled in sports; he was a football and basketball standout for Antelope Valley High and played on a football scholarship to California Lutheran University. After attending Cal Lutheran, he transferred to Long Beach State where he graduated with a BA in Sociology.

Scot's talent for embracing life and people is reflected in his range of experiences and accomplishments: he attended Woodstock in '69, was an accomplished salesman and recruiter, and was the president of the company that developed the Mojave Wind Project, one of the first and largest successful wind parks in the world.

He married JoAnne Bishop December 27, 1979 in Newport Beach, California. They moved to Oregon's Rogue Valley in 1987 where they purchased and renovated the Talent "Nut Ranch." It was here, later renamed Meadowbrook Farms, that they created a country store, entertained friends and family and hosted numerous community groups. The property was later developed by them into a national historic landmark.

In addition to developing solar and wind energy projects, Scot was interested in alternative health issues, snow skiing, fast drives on winding country roads, defending his ping pong title, and researching the history of John Beeson. Above all, he loved spending time with friends and family, always there to be a good listener and give of himself.

Surviving Scot is his wife, JoAnne; son, Jason of San Luis Obispo, CA; daughters, Laura Bishop and Eryne McKinnon; granddaughter, Jennifer Stubbs; grandson, Ryan McKinnon, all of Medford; sisters, Jill Welch of Ithaca, New York and Sylvia Shelley of Riverside, CA; and brother, Steven of Huntington Beach, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger brother, Jimmy.

The family has asked that contributions be made in lieu of flowers. The Humane Society or an organization dedicated to feeding the hungry this holiday season is recommended.

Helen S. Randall
Helen S. Randall, 83, of Ellensburg, Wa died Tuesday (Oct. 14, 2003) in Ellensburg.

Born in Rossville, Kansas on August 6, 1920, she was one of two children of Harold and Lavina (Mansell) James.

She was a career military wife and mother and loved the military life. Following the death of her husband in 1976, she returned to Medford, Oregon to live for many years.

She had recently moved to Ellensburg where she made her home at Hearthstone Cottage and enjoyed living near her daughter and granddaughters.

Survivors include: her daughter, Patricia Randall of Ellensburg, WA; three sons, Ronald Randall of Lakeside, Randy Randall of Seattle, WA, and Robert Randall of Eagle Point; three grandchildren, Leanne Randall Todd and Alyssa Randall Todd, both of Ellensburg, WA, and James (Stacy) Randall Darter of St. Helena, CA; 3 great-grandsons, Zachary, Sage, and Quinn of St. Helena; and her brother, Ronald M. James of Jacksonville.

Following cremation, inurnment will be in the Veterans cemetery in Roseburg.

May Iola Arthur
May lola Arthur died Monday (October 20, 2003) at Waterford at Three Fountains, Medford. She was 92.

She was born May 2, 1911 at home on the northeast side of Vilas Road at Table Rock Road (which she called "The Four Corners") in Jackson County, OR. Her parents are Claron S. and Helen Briggs Eicher. Her grandparents George S. and Lavinia Carman Briggs were early settlers in Medford. May was a lifelong valley resident.

On December 14, 1934, in Medford, she married Ray M. Arthur. They were married 57 years before Ray died in 1991.

She was a 1930 graduate of Central Point High School and was most proud of her school achievements as Senior Class President and on the girl's championship basketball team.

She was a homemaker with great skills in sewing and gardening. She had dreamed of becoming a schoolteacher but hard times in the Depression years did not give her that opportunity. She did become a student of the Bible and devoted many years to Bible teaching in Sunday School and women's Bible studies. She was a charter member of the Eagle Point Community Bible Church where she led Bible studies for many years.

She was a member of TOPS #OR 195 since 1971 and received many awards for the 32 years in that group.

Survivors include a daughter, Colleen Eccleston of Medford; sons Morris Arthur of Medford and James Arthur of Aloha, Oregon; 7 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Bert Benson of Sequim, WA; and a brother, Wilbur Eicher of Central Point. Three sisters preceded her in death: Rachel Eicher, Jennie Lawless, and Nellie Greaser.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Conger-Morris Medford Chapel. Rev. Dr. Larry Jung, First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville will officiate.

Memorial donations may be made to Medford Gospel Mission, 125 West Jackson Street, Medford- OR 97501.

Sally Lee Simpson
Sally Lee Simpson, 63, formerly of Ashland, died Friday, July 11, 2003 at her home in Rancho Cordova, CA.

The graveside service was held Oct. 20, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Siskiyou Memorial Park.

Surviving relatives include daughter, Shelby Sherman of Morgan Hills, CA; son Jeffery McKemie of Las Vegas, NV; her sister, Susan Wilson of Fairbanks, AK; and her mother, Dorothy Gustison of Ashland.

William 'Bill' Murphy
William "Bill" Murphy, born on Halloween Day, 1932, in Oakland, CA, died on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 in his home in Talent.

In his early 40's Bill followed a lifelong dream and moved his family to Quincy, CA, nestled in the Sierra Nevada. He was a salesman, a leader, a motivator, and actor, and a man who followed his own inner path.

In 1997 he retired to the Rogue Valley with his wife Charlotte, where he devoted his life to quiet time alone, a new extended family and full immersion into his lifelong passion - golf. In his last years he finally became the golf champion he had always aspired to be. His death was sad, wondrous, enlightened, peaceful and full of lessons.

No services were held. Donations may be made to Asante' Hospice Special Needs Fund, 2600 Siskiyou Blvd. Medford, OR 97504.

Barbara Dahl
The memorial service for Barbara W. Dahl will be at 2 p.m. today (Jan. 6, 2004) at the Jacksonville Presbyterian Church. Pastor Larry Jung will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 297, Jacksonville, OR 97530 Burial will be in Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana, CA.

Mrs. Dahl, 83, of Central Point, OR, died Friday (Jan. 2, 2004) at Hearthstone Manor, Medford.

She was born Oct. 24, 1920 in Los Angeles, CA. On July 4, 1939 in San Francisco, she married Milford W. Dahl who died in 1988. She moved to the Rogue Valley in 1993 from Ladd Canyon, CA.

Mrs. Dahl was a homemaker.

She was a active member of the Jacksonville Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Dahl was an avid horseperson. She enjoyed reading books and was a active outdoor person Survivors include her son, Milford W. Dahl, Jr. of Newport Beach, CA; her daughter, Theo Louise Cortner of Central Point; eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris, Central Point Chapel.

Billie Beatrice Griffiths
Billie B. Griffiths, 83, died on Tuesday, December 30, 2003.

She was born June 26, 1920 in Commerce, OK, and was adopted by Ben and Bess Crabtree. She had four siblings: Helen, Franceine, Ben and Bobbie. She married Pat Price of Commerce and had three children: Dorris Ann, Ella Jane and Graden Wayne. After her divorce, she married LeRoy Griffiths. All preceded her in death.

She moved from Commerce, OK to San Leandro, CA in 1939. She moved to Happy Camp, CA in 1969. She moved to Gold Hill, OR in 1996.

Her survivors include a step-son, six granddaughters, three grandsons and numerous great-grandchildren.
