Clifford McLean
Clifford "Chief" McLean, 91, of Ashland died Wednesday, March 17, at home of a stroke. He was born to Thomas and Irene McLean on November 18, 1912 on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota. This, coupled with his 1/4 Sioux heritage, earned him the nickname "Chief" when he participated in high school and college athletics.

Cliff moved with his family to Portland during elementary school and then attended Benson Tech High School where he starred in baseball and basketball. He was the state basketball player of the year in 1932. In 2000 he was inducted as a charter member of the Benson Tech Sports Hall of Fame. In 1933 Cliff followed his basketball coach, Howard Hobson, to Southern Oregon Normal School (Now SOU) and played basketball for the school for three years. In 1936 he followed Hobson once again to the University of Oregon where he played basketball and baseball during his senior season. In 1989, when Southern Oregon State College established its Sports Hall of Fame, Cliff was inducted as a charter member.

While attending college in Ashland, Cliff met his future wife, Margaret Harker. They married on February 22, 1939. After finishing his degree at the University of Oregon, Cliff served in the Pacific during WWII as a radar operator on the battleship USS Alabama. When he returned from the war, he spent the next two years playing semi-pro basketball in Salt Lake City. Cliff and Margaret returned to Ashland in 1946 and Cliff began teaching for the Medford School District, where he taught and coached for the next 31 years.

Throughout his tenure, Cliff coached elementary-aged children and, for 15 years, American Legion baseball. While winning was important, Cliff emphasized learning fundamentals and sportsmanship. He was committed to helping children discover the joy of sport. When a young student named Dick Fosbury started using an unconventional method for clearing the high jump bar, Cliff personally went over to Fosbury's house to pile extra hay on the landing area. Although he retired from teaching many years ago, Cliff never lost his joy in interacting with children.

Cliff enjoyed golf, fishing, hunting, and watching sports. He frequently attended Ashland High School, Southern Oregon University and Southern Oregon Timberjacks games. He was often visited by former players whom he coached up to 40 years earlier.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, and is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Craig Pennington of Ashland; his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Reta McLean of Lompoc, California; and grandchildren Christopher McLean of Las Vegas, Nevada; Stacey McLean of Lompoc, California; Mark Pennington of Seattle, Washington; Julie Pennington Gates of Seattle, Washington; and Sara Pennington of Portland, Oregon.
