Darwin Bjerke
Aug. 18, 1941-March 29, 2004 Darwin Bjerke died peacefully, with his wife, Sandy and sister, Kathy at his side, in their home on March 29, 2004.

Darwin, 62, was born August 18, 1941 in Ulen, Minnesota. He had a B.A in Psychology and Anthropology from Moorehead University in Minnesota, and a Master's degree in Psychology from the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, Palo Alto, California.

Darwin began his professional career as a teacher and taught 20 years. In 1970, he founded Poseidon School in Los Angeles, California; which was an alternative Jr. High and High School. In 1982, he moved to the Rogue Valley, where he worked as a professional counselor. He worked at Plowshare Treatment Center, Family Friends, Community Works, and most recently, Southern Oregon Child Study and Treatment Center, and was in private practice with Child and Family Psychiatric Center of Southern Oregon.

Darwin's desire was to make a positive difference in the world and because of that he profoundly served his community with a gentle spirit, kindness, love and compassion.

Darwin is survived by his adoring wife of 13 years, Sandy Bjerke of Medford; daughter, Amira Bjerke of Ashland; parents, Lavern and Ihlor Bjerke of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; and sister, Kathy Bjerke of Richwood, Minnesota.

Viewing will be March 31, 2004. For information call 776-0821.

A celebration of Darwin's life will be held in May at the Yeshe Nyingpo Buddhist Retreat Center near Ashland. A notice of the celebration will appear in the obituary section prior to date.

Because of Darwin's love of nature and his desire for environmental preservation, he requested instead of flowers, contributions to any of the following charities: Sierra Club, Wilderness Society, and Ospirg; and Southern Poverty Law Center (Teaching Tolerance), and Yeshe Nyingpo Buddhist Retreat Center which Darwin helped to build.

Hugh 'Randy' McMullin
The family of Hugh "Randy" McMullin wishes to express their deep gratitude to all of our friends and family who have been so supportive throughout this difficult time. We have been overwhelmed by your helpfulness and great kindness. Our special thanks to our wonderful "extended" family from Hawk Oil Company. We could not have made it without all of you. Just saying thank you does not seem to be enough, but it must do for now.

Karen Ann Jeffries Johnson
Karen Ann Johnson, 46, of Lafayette, OR, died March 23, 2004 at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, OR, after losing her 24 year battle with Lupus. She was born November 19, 1957 in Spokane, WA to Jim and Ida (Smith) Jeffries.

Karen attended schools in Ashland, graduating from Ashland High School in 1976. She had a career in banking for 21 years, and worked in Ashland, Medford, and McMinnville, OR.

Karen married Gary A. Johnson on June 6, 1987 in a garden wedding in Medford, where they lived for 10 years. In 1997 they moved to Lafayette, OR. She enjoyed her animals, flower gardening, reading and the beach. She will be remembered by all as a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend.

Survivors include husband Gary and daughter Kayla, 12, of LaFayette, sister Ramona Holmes of Bend, OR, and parents Jim and Ida Jeffries of Ashland.

Contributions can be made in memory of Karen Johnson for the Yamhill County Humane Society, account# 370131010990, at any branch of Key Bank.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Elks Lodge, 255 E. Main St. in Ashland from 1:00 to 4:00 PM, Saturday, April 24, 2004.

Leonard H. Vollrath
Leonard H. Vollrath, 86, died on March 28, 2004 at his home.

The services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 1 at Eagle Point National cemetery.

Leonard was born October 13, 1917 to Charles and Anna Vollrath in Neche, North Dakota. He married Emma in Gretna, Manitoba, Canada on September 8, 1940.

Leonard farmed until 1960 in Northa Dakota then moved his family to southern California and worked as a heating and air conditioning engineer until his retirement. Leonard and his wife have lived in Medford for the past 20 years.

He is survived by his wife Emma of 63 years; two sons, Dennis Vollrath of Medford and Charles Vollrath of Granada Hills, CA; a daughter Lois Kelm of Fergus Falls, Minnesota; 8 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

The family feels heartfelt gratitude for the caregiving services, the hospice program and staff.

Arrangements: Conger-Morris Central Point Chapel.

Marion Franklin Grindstaff
Marion Franklin Grindstaff, 89, of Medford died Sunday, March 28, 2004.

A graveside service will be held at 10 am on Thursday, April 1, 2004 at the VA cemetery, White City. Reverend Lee Haywood of Antioch, CA will officiate.

Mr. Grindstaff was born June 6, 1914 in San Marcos, Texas to Lillie Mae (Pirtle) and Henry Franklin Grindstaff. On January 3, 1946, he married Mildred, who survives. He lived in Medford from 1987 to 2004.

Mr. Grindstaff was a World War II veteran and worked as a construction worker.

In addition to his wife, survivors include sons, Bob and Dana Grindstaff; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his twin sister, Mary Shaffer in 1997.

Robert A. Shaw
Robert Alvin Shaw, 89, of Ventura, California, died Monday (Dec. 15, 2003) at Ventura County Medical Center. He will join his wife at a private internment at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Medford, OR, Robert was born in North Bend, WA on May 9, 1914. On Oct. 1, 1938 he married Mary Y. Shaw, who preceded him in death. He moved to Medford from Seattle in 1951 to take over stewardship of Teamsters Local Union No. 962. He retired from the Teamsters in 1975. He enjoyed playing golf, and various woodworking projects. He had been living with his son in Ventura, CA until his death.

Survivors include, his son, Dennis; his grandson, Andrew; and his granddaughter, Alexandra.

Memorial contributions may be made to; The Neuropathy Association, Inc., 60 E. 42nd Street, suite 942, New York, NY 10165-0999.

Steve McCallister
A celebration of the life of Steve McCallister will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, at Hawthorne Park.

Steve, 37, of Medford died Monday, March 22, riding his motorcycle, one of his favorite things to do.

He worked as a carpenter. He was a devoted Dad.

Please join Steve's friends and family for a potluck, in remembrance of a kind and giving friend.

Welden "Bill" M. Stauffer
Full Military Services will be held at the Eagle Point National cemetery on Friday, April 2, 2004 at 10 a. m. Reverend Alan Jackson of Westminster Presbyterian Church will officiate.

Welden passed peacefully in his sleep on March 27, 2004 after having been cared for at the VA SORCC for the past several weeks. He was born July 27, 1920 in Eagle Grove, Iowa to Emil & Eva Stauffer.

Welden enlisted in the military in 1939, his first career, and served with distinction in the Army Air Corp and then the Air Force, finally retiring in July of 1960. He survived the BATAAN Death March and three and half years in Mukden, Manchuria prison camp before being liberated. He was awarded numerous medals including the Prisoner of War Medal and a Bronze Star. He rose to the rank of Chief Master Sergeant and was awarded one of the first 600 E-9 rank designations approved by the Department of Defense in 1959.

After retirement from the military, Welden joined the Oregon Employment Division rising quickly to an office management level. After managing the Tillamook office, he returned to Medford where he managed that office for numerous years until his second retirement in 1982.

In the years after dual retirements, he enjoyed stamp collecting, woodworking, billiards, fishing, hunting and collecting key chains and miniature toys. He was a lifetime member of the Elks in Ashland, having been a member for 59 years.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Elks Scholarship Fund at the Ashland Elks Lodge. He was preceded in death in 1995 by his wife of 49 years, Grace Cleveland, Stauffer his sister Donna De Rose in April 1 2003 and parents Emil & Eva Stauffer.

His survivors include two sons, Cary Stauffer of Central Point &; Terry Stauffer of Medford; a sister, Rosalie La Fleur of Medford; three grandchildren, Ryan Stauffer of Seattle, WA, Courtney Stauffer of Medford and Alsacea Stauffer of Central Point; three great-grandchildren, Sidney Stauffer, Cole Welden Stauffer and Ruby Dale Stauffer all of Seattle, WA. Welden was an honorable man who served his country and citizens with dedication and pride Those he left behind will miss him very much.

William Junior Cornelison
William Junior Cornelison, 64, of Gold Hill, died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at Rogue Valley Medical Center.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 1, 2004 at Foots Creek Chapel, with Pastor Mike Moor and Pastor Milton Hayes officiating. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Eagle Point National cemetery. Hull & Hull Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

He was born on August 31, 1939 in Wesley, Arkansas. He served in the United States Air Force. On December 28, 1957 he married the former Betty "Jean" Sanders, who survives. He was a long time employee of Robco, Inc. in Grants Pass.

He was a member of the Oregon Hunters Association and a Masonic Lodge member.

He enjoyed hunting with his hounds and many friends. He also enjoyed fishing, playing the guitar, and being with his grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Betty "Jean" Cornelison of Gold Hill, survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Rhonda Cornelison of Grants Pass; his daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and Ted Perreard of Shedd, Oregon; three sister, Ruby Clark of Bellflower, California; Melba Roach of California City, California, and Joyce Bebout of Huntington Beach, California; two brothers, Charles Cornelison of Gold Hill and Freddie Cornelison of Ontario, California; four loving grandchildren who will carry on his memory forever, Chad and Rikki Perreard of Shedd, Oregon and T.J. and Tianna Cornelison of Grants Pass.

Zelma Opal Pierce
A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m., Friday, April 2, 2004 at the Church of Christ, 1885 N. Keene Way Dr. Glenn Prosise of Keene Way Church of Christ will officiate.

Zelma Opal Pierce, 87, of Grants Pass, died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at her home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Grants Pass Church of Christ, 5180 Redwood Ave., Grants Pass, OR 97526.

Zelma was born January 30, 1917 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to R.R. and Nora Ashford. She finished 10th grade in Shawnee, Oklahoma. On September 12, 1940 in Visalia, California she married James E. Lane, then later divorced. She married Homer Pierce on April 5, 1982 in Medford. Moving from Visalia, California, she lived in the Rogue Valley since 1954.

A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She especially enjoyed her great-grandsons. She loved to play games with anyone. She just enjoyed people.

A devoted Christian and mentor to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved to school them on bible stories.

She had a hobby shop and Laundromat in Eagle Point for several years, and learned to oil paint when she was 60 years old. She won several awards for her paintings. She was a poet as well as an artist.

Survivors include: her son, James Lane of Eagle Point; daughter, Carol Barrentine of Grants Pass; granddaughters: Teresa Thiesfeld of Eugene, Robin Carlson of Rogue River, Lori Furst of Medford, Dawn Lane of Missouri, Laurie Gray of Merlin, Julie Gray of Grants Pass; grandsons: James Coryell of Davison, Michigan, and Tim Coryell of Sacramento, California; great-grandchildren, Joseph Adams, Jonathan Coryell, TJ Thiesfeld, Nathan Thiesfeld, Alec Furst, Christian Carlson, Tristin Coryell; a sister, Pauline Masteller of Medford, a brother Raymond Lee Ashford of Visalia, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by; James E. Lane in 1989, Homer L. Pierce in 2002; a brother, Owen Ashford; and two sisters, Cora Ashford, and Marie Critten.

Alvin Eugene Converse
The memorial service for Alvin Eugene Converse will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at the First Presbyterian Church, Ashland.

Mr. Converse, 90, of Ashland, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at home. He was born August 8, 1913 at Chester, Oklahoma the son of Luella and Leander Converse. As a child he moved to Meade, Kansas and then to the Rogue Valley in 1921.

On November 29, 1934 in Trail, Oregon he married the former Hattie Gray, who survives. He worked for the CCC's, in the timber industry and as a ship welder before joining the maintenance department at Southern Oregon University. Mr. Converse was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church. Even as his health declined, when asked recently what was the best part of his life, he answered, "All of it." He was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are: two sons, John Converse of Fowler, CA and George Converse of Ashland; two daughters, Myrtle Langman of West Linn, OR and Isabelle Davis of Piper City, IL; and nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Dorothy F. Stout
Dorothy F. Stout, 91 year old longtime resident of Ashland, passed away on March 22 at Linda Vista Care Center in Ashland.

Dorothy was born in Gahanna, Ohio on May 4, 1912 to Oliver and Elizabeth Strait. She enjoyed traveling, especially between homes she owned in Canada and Phoenix, AZ. Dorothy loved her Jaguar.

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Treadway of Medford; sister, Bessie Lynch of Johnstown, Ohio; three grandchildren, Dan Treadway, Tim Treadway, and Bob Treadway all of Medford; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne A. Stout on Jan. 30, 2000.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2004, at Henley-Hornbrook cemetery, Hornbrook, CA.

Arrangements: Girdner Funeral Chapel, Yreka.

Henry George Buzza
A private family service will be held for Henry George Buzza, 93, of Trail, who died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 at the Linda Vista Care Center, Ashland. Interment will be at Scenic Hills Memorial Park.

Mr. Buzza was born September 26, 1910 at Fond Du Lac, WI the son of Johanna and Leo Buzza. On July 18, 1936 at Merrill, WI, he married the former Grace Ellen Maloney, who preceded him in death in 1980.

Mr. Buzza moved to Oregon in 1939 and later to Ashland from Newport, Oregon. He served in the United States Army in the Calvary Division and worked as a mechanic and logger. Mr. Buzza was an avid rock hound.

Survivors include: one daughter, Ellen Peterson and her husband, Douglas of Ashland; one brother, Lawrence Buzza of Wausau, WI; two sisters, Rose Lakes of Yuba City, CA and Johanna Leih of Merrill, WI; two granddaughters, Ellen Hanson and her husband, Doug of Medford and Beth Kytola and her husband, Gary of Rogue River; and four great-grandsons and one great-great-grandson.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Litwiller-Simonsen Funeral Home, Ashland.

Louis M. Meek
Louis M. Meek, 78, of Medford, died at home Thursday, March 25, 2004.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004, in Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford with Pastor Tim Olsen of the Bethel Assembly of God Church officiating. After the service a gathering for family and friends will be at Sun Oaks Rec. Hall, 878 Black Oak Dr., Medford.

Louis was born Sept. 9, 1925 in Pickens, OK to Roy and Bertha (Copeland) Meek. He was the eldest of six children. In 1946, he married Doris Fern Hampton. They divorced in 1958. In 1962, he married Joyce Kassahn. They moved to Medford in 1965.

From 1965-1972, Louis set up and serviced mobile homes for "Walker the Weeper." From 1973-1988 he was a self-employed general contractor and built several custom homes in the Rogue Valley. From 1988-1994 he was a carpenter for Medford Corp. He enjoyed gardening, trips to the coast, family, friends and fishing.

He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Joyce; three sons and their wives, Terry and Paulette in Oklahoma, Gary and Shauna of Rogue River, and Michael and Rosie of Central Point; three daughters, Joy and her husband, Dan Downs of Eagle Point, JoAnna and Christine Meek, both of Medford; his brother, Phynes Lee of Golden, MO; his sister, LaVerne Morris of Duncan, OK; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Conger-Morris Funeral Directors, 715 W. Main St., Medford.

Richard William Hocking
Richard William Hocking, 69, of Medford, died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at his home after a long illness. Private services will be held at a later date.

Mr. Hocking was born the son of William and Margaret Hocking, July 3, 1934 in Toronto, Canada. He had been an electronics technician in his life.

He is survived by his loving wife, Patricia (Tish); beloved children, Margaret, William and Murray; step-children, Randall, Mark, Tammy and Jennifer; grandchild, Stephen; and step-grandchildren, Austin, Amber, Michael, Phillip, Olyvia, Valerie, Trevor, Mariah and Gage. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Steven in 1988.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the American Lung Association, 1776 SW Madison Street, Suite 200, Portland, OR 97205-1798.
