Linda Ball Scovill
Linda Ball Scovill, age 63, died peacefully at her Jacksonville home of colon cancer on Thursday, August 5, 2004, surrounded by her family, pets, and the vistas she loved.

Linda moved to Jacksonville from New York City in February 1997. Although she knew no one in this area, she chose Jacksonville as "the perfect small town" and one that reminded her of Tuscany. She was very happy here.

Linda quickly became a major force in her new community. She joined HARC (Historical and Architectural Review Commission) and had been its chair since 1999. She was on the Board of Friends of the Jacksonville Library and served two terms as co-chair. She was instrumental in the planning and building of the new Jacksonville library and helped to inaugurate the film series. Her Book Club and the friendship of its members enriched and sustained her.

Linda "flew with her own wings." She was independent, deeply loyal to her friends, and outspoken when she felt it was necessary. She had an insatiable curiosity and was knowledgeable about a multiplicity of subjects. She was multi-talented, an accomplished pianist, an artist, a gardener, and voracious reader.

Linda was born June 30, 1941, to Wilbur Guy and Cliffine Davis Ball in Bloomington, Illinois. She graduated from Bloomington High School and Oberlin College.

Linda began her publishing career at Harvard University Press in Cambridge, Mass. She moved to New York in l972 to run the direct mail portion of George McGovern's l972 Presidential campaign. She continued her career with successive positions as: Head of Advertising and Promotion, Oxford University Press; International Marketing Manager, Harper and Row; Vice President, Appleton and Lange; and formed her own medical publishing and consulting company, Scovill.Paterson, Inc. She was the Chairperson, the first female to serve in this position, of the Professional and Scholarly Publishing Division of the American Association of Publishers.

She is survived by her lifelong friend Martha (William DeBolt) Schlenker Graner and Martha's children, Karen (Stephen) Graner Harrington, Rolf Graner, David (Kristin) Graner, and Elise Graner; her dear friend Evelyn (Robert) Pyle; and her cousins Jean Sloan Deneen, John (Mario Bufo) Deneen, Ann (John) Deneen Geller, Molly (David) Deneen Kistner, Daniel (Paula) Deneen, David (Katie) Deneen and their children. Her parents and her special aunt, LaRue Sloan, preceded her in death.A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 14, in the Community Room of the Jacksonville Library and is open to the community. Burial at the Jacksonville cemetery will be private.

Maggie K. Unruh
Maggie Koehn Unruh went to her eternal home on August 5, 2004 at her home in Ashland, Oregon. She was 95 years old. She had been in failing health for several years.

Maggie was the first of nine children born to Jonas and Amanda (Schmidt) Koehn in Chickasha, Oklahoma, on July 31, 1909. On July 8, 1933 Maggie married Clyde J. Unruh and they built a home outside of Verden, Oklahoma. Three children completed this family, Don, Phyllis and Barbara. In February of 1952 the family moved to Malin, Oregon.

Clyde went home to be with the Lord in March of 1987 and shortly afterwards Maggie moved to Ashland. Because of failing health, Barbara moved in with her and cared for her mother until her death.

Maggie is survived by her son Don and his wife Ruth of Malin, Oregon; daughters Phyllis and husband Don Krueger of Yelm, Washington, and Barbara of Ashland, Oregon; eight grandchildren, Karen Rassmussen of Portland, OR, David Unruh of Medford, OR, Steve Unruh of Malin, OR, Paul Unruh of Abilene, TX, Julia Unruh of Malin, OR, Brent Krueger of Washington, D.C., Nathan Krueger of Palm Beach, FL, and Shauna Baalman of Everett, WA; six great-grandchildren, Daniel and Eric Rassmussen, Jacquelyn and Shelby Unruh, Briauna and Grace Baalman; sisters Della Jantz of Foley, AL, and Maureen Base of Anadarko, OK; brothers Claude and Vernon Koehn of Galva, KA. Maggie was preceded in death by her husband Clyde, a granddaughter Kalani, her parents Jonas and Amanda Koehn, brothers Leo and Melvin Koehn and sisters Lenora Koehn and Lydia Andress.

Funeral services will be at the First Baptist Church in Verden, Oklahoma with burial in the Plainview Mennonite cemetery of Verden.

Memorial contributions may be made to the hospice organization of your choice.

Arthur 'Art' Becker
A memorial mass for Arthur "Art" Becker will be at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, at Sacred Heart Church, Medford.

Mr. Becker was born on Jan. 13, 1924 in Los Angeles, CA.

He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943 to 1945. On Feb. 1, 1945, in Los Angeles, he married Irma Irene Edwards, who survives. They moved to Cave Junction in 1946. In 1948 they moved back to CA where he worked for the telephone co. In 1956 they moved to Medford transfering with Pacific N.W. Bell telephone, working there for over 34 years, retiring in 1982.

Mr. Becker was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and worked in Conformity of Christian Doctrine for eight years.

Mr. Becker was a yardsaler, he collected golf equipment. He enjoyed spending time with his family, celebrating all holidays together.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Irene of Medford; his children; three sons, Ronald and Daryl of Medford, and Gregory of Phoenix; four daughters, Cherylee Becker of Spokane, WA, Bernadette Jacobs, Valerie Palmer both of Medford, Beverly Becker of Central Point; six grandchilren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to; Rogue Valley Dialysis Fund, 2868 Creekside Circle, Medford, OR 97504.

Everett R. Christian
Everett R. Christian, age 86, died on August 7, 2004 in Medford.

Everett was born on November 17, 1917, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to Verne M. and Annie (Redeborg) Christian. He was the oldest of 18 children.

Everett married Lorraine Vivian Wise on March 3, 1939, in Hoquiam, Washington. On May 21, 2004 his beloved wife of 64 years, preceded him in death. Everett and Lorraine are now together, never to be separated again.

He served in the United States Army, during World War II, he was stationed in Okinawa. He was in the "Class of '47, " honorable discharge.

Everett was an inventor and patent holder of the "Christian Veneer Dryer." Named Baron Von Dryer by the Southern Oregon Timber Industry Association (SOTIA). Everett was a superintendent of Carolina Pacific Plywood and Medply. He was a board of directors of both companies.

He was self-educated, Everett loved to read and talk politics. He was a lifelong democrat, he considered FDR to be the salvation of the United States. He loved philosophy and conversation about it. Most of all he loved his family, his friends and neighbors.

Everett was compassionate, kind and generous. He was a master mechanic, could build whatever he visualized. He loved westerns in books, movies and TV. His lifelong studies and interests were involved in history, and in particular, United States history. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, loved going to local lakes, and enjoyed barbecuing.

Survivors include: Children: Mike Everett Christian, Sherril Kellar, Frances, Kaye Bonecena, Mark Randall Christian; and seven grandchildren.

The family would like to give special thanks to the Rosetta Senior Living Home. The care and attention that was given to both of their parents, will never be forgotten.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 13, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Perl Funeral Home, 2100 Siskiyou Blvd., Medford. Interment will be in the Siskiyou Memorial Park in Medford.

Frederick 'Fred' N. Balken
The memorial service for Frederick "Fred" Nicholas Balken will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Memory Gardens Chapel.

Mr. Balken, 68, of Jacksonville, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004. He was born on May 2, 1936 in Whittier, CA. On Sept. 9, 2002 in Medford, he married Audry Fay Hibberds, who survives.

He was a Brick Mason and was a member of the Bricklayers Union.

Mr. Balken enjoyed fishing and ranching. He had served in the US Army.

Survivors include: his wife, Audry F. Balken of Jacksonville; four sons, Ken N. Balken of Omaha, NE; Charles L. Balken of Central Point, Arthur F. Balken of White City, and Jay Wesley Balken of Medford; fifteen grandchildren; three step-children, Donald and Eric McMillan both Medford, and Jeannie Parker of Jacksonville; a sister, Mary Hellwig of CA, and a brother, Robert Thompson of MO.

Pete L. Orr
Lifelong Rogue Valley resident Pete L. Orr, 79, passed away on Monday, Aug. 9, 2004 in Medford.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 13, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Rogue Valley Christian Church, 1440 S. Oakdale in Medford. A reception will follow the service at the church.

Mr. Orr was born on May 22, 1925 in Rogue River, OR to Vern and Gladys (Moore) Orr. He attended Evans Creek Grade School in Rogue River, and high school in Medford. Pete, as friends and family knew him, he entered the U.S. Navy in July of 1943. He served until being honorably discharged at the rank of Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class in April of 1946. Pete married Charlotte Rothboeck in Medford, on Dec. 13, 1952.

He worked in construction and was a member of the Carpenter's Union. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and was an excellent craftsman, builder and handyman.

Survivors include: his wife, Charlotte of Medford, son and daughter-in-law, Dick and Mary Orr of Vancouver, WA; daughter, Vicki Orr of Medford; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Rick Goodman of Bend; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ike Orr of Medford.

Memorial contributions may be made to the RVMC Foundation, 2600 Siskiyou Blvd, No. 100, Medford, OR 97504. The family has asked that donations be directed to Hospice or to the Cancer Center; the donor has the choice and may indicate such on the check memo.

William 'Phil' Hillis
William "Phil" Hillis, 69, passed away Saturday (Aug. 7, 2004) at his home in Grants Pass. He was born on Aug. 12, 1934 to Lee and Betty Hillis, ancestors to the first pioneer family of the Evans Valley/ Wimer, OR area. He is a graduate of Rogue River High School. Mr. Hillis served as Sonar Man in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1957. He, for many of the past years, enjoyed attending his ship's annual reunions for the USS Maddox. He competed in rodeo during the Worlds Fair at Brussels, Belgium in 1958. In 1997, he retired after working 20 years for Boise Cascade.

He enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing.

Instead of mourning death, he requested no services to be held and that his ashes be scattered at his favorite hunting/stomping grounds up the west fork of Evans Creek.

He is survived by his wife, Caye; sister, Pat and her husband Ed Barr; sons, Randy and his wife Mary Hillis, Mike and his wife Michelle Carson; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; uncles, aunts, cousins, and nephews.

Audrey Jane Kutz
Audrey Jane Kutz, 87, of Central Point, died Sunday (April 25, 2004) at the Rogue Valley Medical Center. Private graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Medford. Pastor Pete Slusher of The Community Bible Church will officiate.

Audrey (Marlatt) Kutz was born May 11, 1916 in Lashburn, Saskatchewan, Canada to Herbert and Elisa Jane Marlatt. She married Marvin Kutz of Unity Saskatchewan on March 13, 1935 and had three children, and raised them in Meadville, PA. They moved to Eugene, OR in 1950, where they lived until they retired in 1976 and moved to Jacksonville. Following her husband's death Audrey moved to Central Point in 1986 where she resided until her death.

Survivors include, two daughters, Dixie Wicks of Central Point, and Duveen Buelow of Prescott, AZ; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin and son, Donald.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests a donation in her honor to C.A.T.S. (Committed Alliance To Strays), P.O. Box 56, Medford, OR 97501.

C.J. 'Matt' Matsdorf
C. J. "Matt" Matsdorf of Talent went to be with his Lord on Monday, April 26, 2004. Matt was born in Los Angeles on October 15, 1927 to Otto and Della Matsdorf. On August 24, 1951 in Yuma, AZ. he married the former Patricia A. Delaney who survives.

An auto mechanic by trade, Matt was the owner/operator of Matt's Automotive in Eagle Rock, CA. for thirty-three years; he retired to Talent in 1994, where he volunteered for four years as director of the Faith Bible Center Food Bank.

He was a member of the Crater Lake Regional Group of The Early Ford V8 Club of America.

Matt's hobby was restoring his '37 Ford Sedan. Matt loved Jesus and attended Bethel Church in Medford.

In addition to his wife Pat, Matt is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Velda Matsdorf, of Billings, MT.; daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Matt Kosak of Medford and Laurie and Keith Neinast of Yuma, AZ.; seven grandsons, Travis, Tyler, Matthew, Brian, Lex, Tyler and Corey; two great-grandchildren, Logan and Riley; and a nephew, Jerry Matsdorf of Rosemead, CA.

A funeral honoring Matt's home going will be held at Perl Siskiyou Memorial Park Chapel on Friday, April 30, 2004 at 10:30 AM. Pastor Gary Matsdorf will officiate.

A luncheon will follow at the Medford home of his daughter and her family. Contributions in Matt's honor can be made to the Parkinson Center of Oregon at OHSU in Portland.

Donald F. Freeman
Donald F. Freeman, 60, of Springfield, (formerly of the Rogue Valley) died Sunday (April 25, 2004) at his home.

Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene.

Helen Mae Leavens
The funeral mass for Helen Mae Leavens will be at 2 p.m. Friday April 30, 2004 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Medford.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6:30 p.m. followed by the recitation of the Rosary at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 29, at Perl Funeral Home, at Siskiyou Memorial Park, Medford.

Mrs. Leavens, 88, of Medford died Saturday, (April 24, 2004) at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on August 2, 1915 in Hillsboro, OR, a daughter of Fred and Anna (Unger) Grenbemer. She moved to Ashland in 1930.

Mrs. Leavens graduated from Ashland High School in 1934 and from Southern Oregon Normal School in 1936. On June 1, 1940 in Ashland she married Darrell Leavens. They moved to Medford that same year. He preceded her in death in 1992.

She worked at Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company for 18 years as an operator and service representative.

Mrs. Leavens was member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, St. Anne's Altar Society, and the the Telephone Pioneers. She was an Associate of the Sisters of the Holy Names and a member of the Petunia Group.

She enjoyed collecting art glass and antiques, family gatherings, and travel.

Survivors include: five children, Mary Carol Day of Hillsboro, OR, John, Robert, William, and James all of Medford; seven grandchildren; and a sister, Margaret Fraser of Portland. She was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Frank and George Grenbemer and two sisters, Mayme Heston and Lauretta Pfeiffer.

Memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Church, 517 West 10th St., Medford, OR 97501 or to Sacred Heart School, 431 S. Ivy St., Medford, OR. 97501.

Laura M. Coffman
Laura Coffman, 54, of Medford, died April 23, 2004 at her home. Memorial services will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Thursday, April 29, 2004, at the Moose Lodge, 226 N. Ross Lane, Medford.

In lieu of flowers please make contributions to the Laura Coffman's Memorial Fund, at any branch of U.S. Bank.

Maxine (Fullerton) Myhre
A memorial service for Maxine Linna (Fullerton) Myhre will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 1, 2004 at Conger Morris Medford Chapel. A reception will follow at the Zion Luther Church, 516 W. 4th Street, Medford. Pastor Jon Olson will officiate.

Mrs. Myhre, 84, of Medford, died April 22, 2004, at her home.

Memorial contributions may be made to: American Lung Association, 1740 Broadway, New York, NY 10019.

She was born March 7, 1920, in Junction City, OR to Wilbur and Edna Reetz.

Always an Oregonian she grew up and went to school in a farming environment. She recieved her teaching degree from the University of Oregon.

On Aug. 20, 1940 she married Robert B. Fullerton who passed away Feb. 26, 1980. They had four children.

She taught school in the Eugene/ Springfield area for 20 years. After their retirement Maxine and her husband moved to Brookings, OR.

Maxine later moved back to Medford and spent fove years as a tour guide and painting.

In 1987 Maxine met and married Jens O. Myhre who survives.

In addition to her husband survivors include: a daughter, Janice Sandberg of Hillsboro, OR; three sons, David of Gueydan, LA, Brian of Eugene, Irv of Fairfield, CA; two brothers, Leo and Donald; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband and one sister.
