Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Kelly, Jr., Norman

Norman Kelly, Jr., 58 of Glen Riddle, a revered teacher in the Rose Tree Media School District for 37 years, died Aug 25 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Kelly was born in Philadelphia and lived in West Chester until moving to Middletown. He joined the Rose Tree Media School District in 1969 upon graduating from West Chester University, where he also received his master's degree. He taught at Glenwood Elementary School until 1992 and at Indian Lane Elementary until 2004, when he took his medical leave of absence.

Still battling his illness, he returned to the district this year to mentor new teachers through RTM's teacher induction program.

Mr. Kelly was honored at Indian Lane Elementary School less than four months ago. More than 1, 000 attended when the Indian Lane courtyard was dedicated in his honor. At the dedication ceremony, Mr. Kelly was praised by almost two dozen former students.

Mr. Kelly adapted the school courtyard to be a haven for his beloved birds. This prompted the school's Parent Teacher Group to provide funds to continue feeding the birds and other classes to make birdhouses and feeders.

Mr. Kelly also was an assistant coach for Rose Tree Optimist Lacrosse and huge fan of the game.

He was an elder and choir member at Media Presbyterian Church.
