Doyle 'The Harv' Harvey

Doyle “The Harv” Harvey, 64, a longtime resident of the Essington section of Tinicum Township, died on May 31st at Cooper Medical Center in Camden, N.J.

Born in Chester, he was the son of the late Cledith and Vera Harvey. He was a resident of the Essington section of Tinicum Township for most of his life.

Mr. Harvey was a veteran of the Vietnam War having served in the U.S. Air Force.

He was employed as an auto worker at the Chrysler Plant in Newark, Delaware for 20 years until his retirement. He worked at Westinghouse for a number of years before that.

Mr. Harvey’s great enjoyment was drag racing, and his affectionate nickname, “The Harv” was on the side of his race cars for all to see. He raced at Atco, Cecil County, and Maple Grove among the local tracks and was still racing his cars as recently as last year.

Mr. Harvey also enjoyed hunting, but most of all, he just loved to be around people and he was known by all for his ability to carry the conversation and his wonderful stories.

He will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband and father and friend to many.

Mr. Harvey is predeceased by his sister, Janice Broomall.

He is survived by his wife, Beverly Harvey; his son, Thomas Harvey of Havertown; his brothers, Stanley Harvey of Aston and Harry Harvey of Glen Mills.

His funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 A.M. at The Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike in Norwood. His visitation will be on Saturday from 9 A.M. to 10 A.M. at the funeral home. His burial will be in Lawn Croft Cemetery in Lower Chichester Township.

Joyce H. Horrox

Joyce H. Horrox, 81, a longtime resident of Essington, Tinicum Township, died on May 29th at The Prospect Park Health & Rehabilitation Residence in Prospect Park.

Born in Wisbech Beach, England, Mrs. Horrox was the daughter of the late George and Sarah Slade. She emigrated to this country from England in 1951 and was a resident of the Essington section of Tinicum Township for the last 58 years.

Mrs. Horrox was employed in the housekeeping department at the Ramada Inn in Tinicum for ten years, and prior to that, worked for Control Switch, a division of the Singer Company, in Folcroft for 14 years.

She enjoyed gardening and was especially loved to spend time with her family and friends fishing at the South Jersey shore. She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Horrox was the wife of the late Richard Horrox, who died in 2006.

She is survived by her daughter, Diane Gaul of Essington, Tinicum Township; her sons, Paul Horrox of Morton and John Horrox of Prospect Park; her sister, Rose Day in England; her brother, Terry Slade in England; and her eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Her memorial service and burial will be private.

David B. Ashenfelter

David B. Ashenfelter, 56, a resident of Rising Sun, Maryland, and a former resident of the Holmes section of Ridley Township, Pa.; died on May 27th at his residence.

Mr. Ashenfelter was born in Coatesville, Pa. and was raised in Holmes and was a 1972 graduate of Ridley High School. He first moved to Elkton, Maryland in 1974 and has been a resident of Rising Sun, Maryland since 1979.

He had been an employee of Delmarva Power for 36 years.

Mr. Ashenfelter was a collector of guns and rare coins and was a federally licensed gun collector. He enjoyed living in Cecil County and will be sadly missed by his family and his many friends.

He is survived by his parents, Charles and Mildred Ashenfelter of Holmes, Pa. and by his brother, Dean Ashenfelter of Riverside, California.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, June 7th, at 7:30 P.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike in Norwood, Pa. A visitation period will be from 7 P.M. to 9 P.M. on Monday at the funeral home. His burial will be private.

Dorothy Mae Firlein

Dorothy Mae Firlein, 85, a resident of Rutledge and a former longtime resident of Prospect Park, died on May 17th at The Wallingford Health & Rehabilitation Center in Nether Providence Township.

Born in Scotland County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Gaston and Mattie Tyner. Mrs. Firlein was a resident of Rutledge for the last eighteen months, having lived in Prospect Park for 36 years prior to that.

She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her extensive family.

Mrs. Firlein was the wife of the late Ernest H. Firlein, Jr., who died in 1999. She was also predeceased by her granddaughter, Athena Collison.

She is survived by her sons, John W. Collison of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma and Paul Firlein of Boothwyn, Upper Chichester Township; her daughter, Sandra S. Goetsch of Rutledge; her brothers and sisters; and her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her great-great-grandchildren.

Her graveside service will be held on Thursday at 11 A.M. at Glenwood Memorial Gardens, on West Chester Pike, in Marple Township. Her burial to follow in Glenwood Memorial Gardens.

Shirley E. Knowlton Bylone

Shirley E. Knowlton Bylone, 77, a resident of Ridley Park who worked as a bus aide for the Ridley School District, died on April 21st at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret Wilhelm. Mrs. Bylone was a resident of Ridley Park since 2004, having lived in Delaware County for all of her life.

Mrs. Bylone worked as a bus aide for the Ridley School District for 14 years until becoming ill.

Mrs. Bylone enjoyed doing crochet work in her spare time and was know for her beautiful work, and she loved to dance as well. She enjoyed taking day trips to the shore with her husband whenever she could, many times totally unplanned; they just would pack up and go.

Most of all, she will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Knowlton. She was also predeceased by two sons-in-law, Harold W. "Smitty" Smith, III and John Harrison.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest G. Bylone, Sr.; her daughters, Linda S. Nichols of Collingdale, Barbara J. Smith of Cape Coral, FL., Debra A. Harrison of Folsom, Ridley Township, and Dolores T. Rouse of Clifton Heights; her sons, Robert T. Knowlton of West Chester, Richard D. Knowlton of Cherry Hill, N.J., and John G. Knowlton of Cape Coral, FL.; her step-son, Ernest G. Bylone, Jr. of Turnersville, N.J.; her stepdaughter, Terri Parnell of South Philadelphia; her sister, Dolores Hutchinson of Philadelphia, Pa.; her 18 grandchildren; her 14 great-grandchildren; her 10 step-grandchildren; and her 23 step-great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood. Her visitation will be on Monday from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home. Her burial will be private.

Marguerite H. Suiter

Marguerite H. Suiter, 89, died on January 10th at Fair Acres Geriatric Center in Lima, where she had resided since August 2008. Prior to that, she lived for 15 years at Llanfair House apartments in Ardmore, and for 32 years in Springfield, Delaware County.

Born in South Philadelphia in 1920, “Margie” was the daughter of the late Frank G. Hoag, printer, and Margaret Kelly Hoag. The Hoag family lived 40 years in Stonehurst, St. Cyril’s Parish. Marguerite Hoag was a proud graduate of West Catholic Girls High, Class of 1938, and attended many reunions.

In 1944 she married Warren J. Suiter of Upper Darby. They were together for 41 years until Mr. Suiter’s death in 1985. He was an accountant, with his own business in Havertown; she was for many years his assistant and office manager. After his death, she worked for several years at Martindale’s health food store in Springfield.

She was an avid golfer and bowler who played both until age 78. From 1971 to 2008, she was a member of Overbrook Golf Club. She is remembered for her high energy level, spontaneity and irrespressible optimism. She loved to socialize, dance, and sing, and knew the lyrics to hundreds of show tunes and popular songs. Her favorite song in recent years was “The Best Is Yet to Come.”

She is survived by her son, John Suiter of Media; her sister, Virginia Harmon of Little Silver, New Jersey; and her brother Frank, of Hatfield Township; as well as a core group of loyal girl friends, several of whom she had remained close with for more than 70 years.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, April 17th at 11 A.M. at St. Kevin’s Catholic Church, 200 West Sproul Road, in Springfield, her parish church from 1962 to 1993. Burial will follow at Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery on Sproul Road in Marple Township.

Anne R. Goldsborough

Anne R. Goldsborough, 73, a resident of Norwood for most of her life, died on April 7th at Crozer-Chester Medical Center in Upland.

Born in Ridley Park, she was the daughter of the late Rob Roy and Marjorie Rex. Mrs. Goldsborough was a 1954 graduate of the former Glen-Nor High School, where she Salutatorian of her Class.

She was employed for ten years as an assistant manager for the former Fidelity Bank in Lansdowne; and then went to work as a secretary for the Interboro School District in the Pupil Services Department from 1976 to 1989.

Mrs. Goldsborough loved doing all kinds of craft work, and her wonderful talents could be seen in examples of her work, including her string art boats, angels she had made, and her beautiful glass flower center pieces. She had a fondness for animals, but especially cared for cats. She loved her family trips to Ocean City, N.J. Most of all, she will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.

Mrs. Goldsborough was a longtime and dedicated member of the Norwood United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Richard Goldsborough; her daughter, Patricia Kelso of Claymont, Delaware; her son, Glenn Goldsborough of Norwood; her sister, Doris Schutte of West Chester; her brothers, Robert Rex of Newtown Square and Richard Rex of Broomall; and her grandchildren, Danny, Kevin, and Sarah; and her nieces and nephews.

Her funeral service will be held on Monday at 10:30 A.M. at the Norwood United Methodist Church, 315 Chester Pike, in Norwood. Her visitation will be on Monday from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the church. Her burial will be private.

Martin R. 'Marty' Wright

Martin R. “Marty” Wright, 49, a resident of Prospect Park and former resident of Folcroft, died on April 6th at The Taylor Hospice Residence in Ridley Park.

Mr. Wright was a resident of Prospect Park for the last 15 years, and lived in Folcroft for 20 years prior to that. He was a graduate of the former Sharon Hill High School. He worked in construction and roofing for a number of years, and before that worked in auto sales, was a long distance truck driver for a period of time, and was in retail sales at Sears.

He loved fishing and enjoyed playing golf whenever he could and loved all kinds of music and was a very good dancer. He followed Eagles football and was an avid fan. He had a true passion for animals and their care, and most of all, he loved being around people and had a thirst for life. He will be remembered for his energy and spirit and his devotion to his family and friends.

He was the son of the late Martin R. Wright.

He is survived by his mother and step-father, Patricia and Frank Jackalous of Prospect Park; his sisters, Patricia Wright and Dara Peditto; his aunt and uncle, Lorraine and Bob Walker; and his niece, Anna Wright Peditto.

His funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10:30 A.M. at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, on Mohawk Avenue, in Norwood. His visitation will be on Friday from 9 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the church. His burial will be in Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery in Marple Township.

Charles E. McCauley

Charles E. McCauley, 84, a resident of Avalon, N.J. and a former resident of Glenolden, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 5th, 2010.

He was a graduate of Drexel University and was employed at Sun Shipbuilding from 1952 to 1969 working as a draftsman and then project engineer. Mr. McCauley retired to Avalon, N.J. in 1986 after 20 years of civil service as a Naval Architect with the U.S. Navy Department in Washington, D.C.

He was predeceased by his son, Charles E. McCauley, III.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Mekenney McCauley; his three grandchildren and his two great-grandchildren.

His memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 13th at 11 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood. His visitation will be on Tuesday from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home. His burial will be private.

Frank P. Witmer, Jr.

Frank P. Witmer, Jr., 95, a 69 year resident of Prospect park, died peacefully in his sleep on Easter morning, April 4th, at his home.

Born in East Orange, N.J., he spent his childhood years in Bala Cynwyd, Pa. and graduated From Lower Merion High School where he played football, and from the University of Pennsylvania where he lettered in Lightweight Crew and received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1936. He was a licensed Professional Engineer and devoted his career to designing large power plants all over the world for the Kuljian Corporation of Philadelphia (an engineering consulting firm.)

He devoted all his after-work energies to his love of football and his inherent character-building for the youth of Delaware County. In 1948, he founded the Prospect Park Termites boys’ football teams in his back yard and, almost immediately, began winning championships across the county and across the state. As a result of his efforts, the Termites are now in their 62nd straight year with 6 football teams and cheerleader squads. After retiring, in 1977, he continued as an avid fan of all Termites and Interboro sports teams, often being honored with halftime pep talk duties for the last 32 years.

He has received many awards and recognition throughout his coaching career, including having the Prospect Park municipal field re-named the “Frank P. Witmer Field” in 1968, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Interboro School District with his wife Peg in 1998, induction into the Interboro Hall of Fame with his wife in 2000, and the 2004 Youth League Award from the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. As a testimony to his life and contributions to the youth of our community, he is beloved by so many of the area’s youth and adults (many high school sports coaches are graduated Termites) for having contributed so much to providing opportunities and life-long lessons for our kids.

He was a devoted Episcopalian for over 90 years, and served several terms on the Vestry at St. James Episcopal Church in Prospect Park.

Mr. Witmer was predeceased by his son, Frank Witmer, III.

He is survived by his wife and constant companion, Peggy Witmer, to whom he was happily married for 71 years; his son, Thomas Witmer and his wife Frances of Seneca, S.C.; his daughter-in-law Joan G. Gombar and her husband Bernard of Thornton, Pa.; his five grandchildren, Deborah J. Rausher of Roaring Branch, Pa., Cynthia W. Schofield of Kennett Square, Pa., laura S. Witmer-Gautsch of Eden Prairie, M.N., Frank E. Witmer of Exton, Pa., and Thomas H. Witmer, Jr. of Epping, NH and their families. He is also survived by 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 10th at 10:30 A.M. at St. James Episcopal Church, 11th & Lincoln Avenues in Prospect Park, Pa. Friends may call on Friday, April 9th, from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. and from 6 P.M. to 9 P.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood. His burial will be in Edgewood Memorial Park in Concord Township.

Helen Runk Kline

Helen Runk Kline, 83, of Lexington, Ky., died on Wednesday, March 31, 2010. A retired school teacher, she was a native of Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Thomas and Helen Pierce Runk. A brother, Donald Runk, preceded her in death.

Surviving are her son, Bruce Kline, of Lexington, Ky; grandson, Christopher Kline; daughter-in-law Pat Kline of Lexington; nephews, Kevin Runk, of Pennsylvania and David Runk, of California; and a sister-in-law, Margie Runk of Coatesville, Pa.

She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Lexington, Ky; where the funeral service was conducted on Monday, April 5th. Interment will be held on Monday, April 12th at 2:30 P.M. at the New Cathedral Cemetery, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Patricia Ann Tichy

Patricia Ann Tichy, 70, a resident of Dover, Delaware and a former resident of Sharon Hill, died on March 31st at Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, Delaware.

Born in Pennsylvania, she was a resident of Dover, Delaware for the last two years, having lived in Northeast, Maryland and Folcroft before that. She was a resident of Sharon Hill for 21 years before moving to Folcroft.

Mrs. Tichy enjoyed reading in her spare time, but most of all, enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was the wife of the late John C. Tichy, who died in 1994. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Ann Bacher of Newport, Delaware; her son, John C. Tichy, Jr. of Seattle, Washington; her eight grandchildren, and her two great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be held on Monday at 11 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood. Her visitation will be on Monday from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home.Her burial will be in Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill.

Tameka Romona Strickland

Tameka Romona Strickland, 36, a lifelong resident of Chester, died on March 18th at The Taylor Hospice Residence in Ridley Park.

Born in Chester, she was a resident of the city all of her life. She loved to travel, and enjoyed meals surrounded by her family and friends. Most of all, spending time with her children and family was most important to her.

She is survived by her children, Kevin Strickland of Atlanta, Georgia, Kiarah Strickland, Keasiah Strickland, Khaliyah Strickland, and Amani Strickland all of Chester; her mother, Iyonne Strickland of Chester; her father, Ronnie Coleman of Chester; her brothers, James Swift of Chester and Ronnie of Chester; her loving companion who cared for her, Anthony P. Newman of Chester; and aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews.

Her funeral service and burial will be private.

Helen V. Parris

Helen V. Parris, 72, a resident of Glenolden and former resident of South Philadelphia, passed away peacefully at home on March 17th. She smiled and laughed with her daughter at a picture of her grandson, went up the stairs, and the Lord took her.

She was born in Philadelphia on October 29th, 1937. She attended Philadelphia Public Schools, but went to work at age sixteen to help the family financially. She was married at age twenty-one to John L. Parris. They had three children, Janet, Christopher, and Domenick. Mr. Parris predeceased her in 1971.

Mrs. Parris was also predeceased by her parents, George and Helen Hadlock; and by her sisters, Jane Davis and Bootsie Collings, and her brothers, George and Benjamin Hadlock.

Mrs. Parris was known as the “Baby Lady” in her South Philadelphia neighborhood She was a foster parent for Catholic Social Services and she cared for over one hundred infants who were either awaiting adoption or a return to their parents.

She moved to Glenolden in 1988 and thoroughly enjoyed living there. She re-entered the work force soon after moving to Delaware County as a waitress in the MacDade Mall. She had legions of loyal customers who loved her sharp wit and great service. If you were a regular, you usually heard her trademark, “Yo Babe, Over here.” She retired due to declining health in 2006.

She was loved by her children, grandchildren, daughters-in-law, son-in-law, her sister Judy Siebert of Virginia; her brother-in-law Fred, and her extended family in Virginia.She loved her grandson, Domenick, with every bit of her heart and soul. Even though she only had two and a half years with him, Mom-Mom poured a lifetime of love, devotion and caring into him.

She was a great mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt, and will be sadly missed by all. She is survived by her daughter, Janet White of Glenolden; her sons, Christopher Parris of South Philadelphia and Domenick Parris of Philadelphia; her sister, Judith Siebert of Virginia; and her six grandchildren, niece, and her nieces nephews, cousins, and her extended family in Virginia.

Her funeral service and burial will be private.
