Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Marie K. Jacoby

Marie K. Jacoby, age 89, a resident of Pitman Manor in Pitman, N.J. and formerly of Aston, Pa., Prospect Park, Pa., and Venice, Florida, died on December 11, 2012 at Pitman Manor.

Born in Romania, Mrs. Jacoby was a resident of Pitman, N.J. since 2003, having resided in Venice, Florida for 27 years before moving to New Jersey.

Mrs. Jacoby was attending the First Presbyterian Church of Pitman, and was a former member of Mt. Hope United Methodist Church in Aston, Pa.

She enjoyed playing bingo, playing all kinds of card games, and was an avid reader.

She will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Mrs. Jacoby was the wife of the late Lester J. Jacoby, who died in 2003 and was predeceased by her son, John Flick.

She is survived by her son, Franklin W. Jacoby of Mullica Hill, N.J., her daughters, Kathleen Mitchell of Glassboro, N.J. and Rosemarie Myers of Spring City, Pa; her brother, Ferdinand Remick of Cheltenham, Pa. and her 10 grandchildren and her 5 great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be private. Her burial will be private at Edgewood Memorial Park in Concord Township.

Ethel Dalton Roddy

Ethel Dalton Roddy, affectionately known as “Peach” to family and friends, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2012 in the home in Prospect Park where she was born on December 3, 1919. She was the daughter and youngest of six children of Alonzo E. and Lulu Harriet Moore Dalton. Her siblings who predeceased her were Elizabeth Dalton Jones, Mabel Dalton Noll, Dorothea Dalton Freeman, Marian Dalton Flynn, and Alonzo, Jr. (Bud). She was also predeceased by her dear nieces Norma Jones Dent and Beverly Noll Turner.

Ethel worked for many years in the Dowdy Agency in Prospect Park, Pa. Ethel loved life and had a smile, kind words, and a hug for everyone. Over the course of her life she was a great source of comfort and joy for family and friends. There was a succession of many lucky dogs who shared their lives with her and she loved every one of them unconditionally. One hobby she especially enjoyed was collecting Teddy bears, which she dressed according to the season. Right now they are all sporting Santa hats. Ethel loved decorating the inside and outside of her house as appropriate for each holiday. She was currently enjoying looking at her Christmas decorations.

Ethel was a member and supporter of the Prospect United Methodist Church for many decades. She and her husband shared a summer home in Avalon, New Jersey for many years, where family and friends gathered to swim, fish, boat, crab, play cards, or just relax. She was a remarkable lady who made the world a better place for all who knew her.

She will be sadly missed by her husband of almost 71 years, Carl C. Roddy, Jr.;

Her nephew Kerry Freeman; nieces Patricia Flynn Gemma and Carol Flynn Ferrari, their spouses, her special friend Bob Dent, her faithful companion Daisy, and many relatives and friends too numerous to mention, but all special to Ethel.

Her funeral service will be held on Friday, December 14th, at 11 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood, Pa. Her visitation will be on Friday from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home. Her burial will be in Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill.

Contributions: Donations in Ethel’s memory can be made to the Prospect United Methodist Church, 800 Lincoln Avenue, Prospect Park, Pa. 19076 or to the American Red Cross, 2221 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, Pa. 19103.

John M. Strain, III

John M. Strain III (Jack), 62 peacefully passed away on Thursday December 6, 2012 at the Coatesville VA Hospice. He was born on March 21, 1950 in Delaware County to John and Frances Strain.

Jack grew up in Delaware County. He graduated from Penncrest High School in Media, Pa in 1967. In 1968 Jack enlisted in the Army. He served overseas in Italy and Germany. After his tour of duty he safely returned home and lived in Chester County.

Jack worked hard for most of his life focusing mainly in construction and sales.

Jack enjoyed music, fishing, joking and laughing with family and friends and was an avid Eagles football fan.

Jack was married on March 6, 1982 to Vickie Merwin. They spent 17 years together and had one son, John M. Strain IV.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, John and Frances Strain and brothers, William Strain and Alan Strain. Jack is survived by his son, John M. Strain IV of Pittsburgh, Pa, Sister Kathleen Rundatz of Dallas GA and Sister Cheryl Lafond of Coatesville Pa.

A memorial service will be held at Griffith funeral chapel on Thursday December 13, 2012 at 1:00. Chaplain Austin Joyce, who offered his guidance and support in Jack’s last weeks, will be officiating. There will be a one hour viewing prior to the service. Burial will follow at Lawncroft Cemetery on Ridge road in Linwood, Pa. Jack and the family have arranged for the ash remains of his youngest brother, Alan Strain to be laid to rest in an adjoining grave on the same day. Alan is survived by two daughters, Heather Strain and Christine Strain.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Department of Veterans Affairs Hospice at Coatesville VA Volunteer Services 1400 Blackhorse Hill road, Coatesville, Pa 19320.

The family would like to thank the Coatesville VA Hospice Unit’s entire staff, Chaplain Austin Joyce and Griffith Funeral Chapel for all their help and support.

Florence H. Yoder

Florence H. Yoder, 92, of Ridley Park, Pa. died on November 23, 2012 at Taylor Hospital. She was a Registered Nurse at Taylor Hospital for many years.

She is survived by her daughter, Doris Donald, her grandchildren, William, Loraine, Robert, Christel, Nathaniel, and Mary and she was blessed with 17 very precious and adorable Great-Grandchildren, and her niece, Lynn Hirzel.

Her visitation will be on Friday, November 30th beginning at 6 P.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, Norwood, Pa. Her memorial service will begin at 7 P.M. on Friday at the Funeral Home. Her burial will be private

Elva M. Thiboutot

Elva M. Thiboutot, 91, a longtime resident of Ridley Township, died on November 10, 2012 at her late residence.

Born and raised in Norwood, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Esther Machette.

Elva worked for a period of time at the Norwood Sweet Shop and then at the Baldwin Locomotives plant during World War II. She loved cooking, sewing, and beautiful flowers.

She is the wife of the late Patrick Thiboutot.

She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Thiboutot; her three sons, Rich, Tom, and Greg Thiboutot; her sister, Irene Williamson; her nine grandchildren, Darline and Brad Anderson, Michelle, Yvonne, Patrick, Thomas D., Cyrus, Jason, and Jonathan Thiboutot; her step-granddaughter, Patricia Myers; and her several great-grandchildren, nephews, and nieces.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 17th, at 10 A.M. at Middletown Presbyterian Church, 273 Old Middletown Road, Media. Her visitation will be on Friday evening, November 16th, from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood. Her burial will be at Edgewood Memorial Park in Glen Mills.

Barbara Louise Hoot

Barbara Louise (nee Coshia) Hoot, 79, a longtime resident of Norwood, died on November 10, 2012 at Crozer-Keystone Hospice at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Hoot was born and lived in Boston, MA until 1955 when she moved to Pennsylvania. She had been a resident of Norwood since 1964.

She was an active member of Leiper Presbyterian Church and then later Norwood United Methodist Church. She received the Cross and Flame recognition for outstanding service to its children and youth after many years as a leader in Girl Scouts. Mrs. Hoot was recognized in 1998 for “repaying the good things in her life by investing in others.” She was very active as a Cub Scout Den Mother, as a member of the Norwood Republican Club, she served as a Judge of Elections in the local polls, and she was a longtime member of the Norwood Recreation Board.

Mrs. Hoot was the daughter of the late Angelo and Mae Coshia. She was the wife of the late Joseph E. Hoot, Sr., who died in April of this year.

She is survived by her children, Brenda Lingle (David), Joseph E. Hoot, Jr. (Tina), Edna Watkins (David) and Michael Hoot (Dana); her 10 grandchildren; and her 5 great-grandchildren.

Her funeral service will be held on Thursday, November 15th, at 11 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood. Her visitation will be on Thursday from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home. Her burial will be in Chester Rural Cemetery in Chester.

Contributions: in lieu of flowers, contributions made in her memory to Norwood United Methodist Church, 315 Chester Pike, Norwood, Pa. 19074 would be appreciated.

Rosalie W. Harrington

Rosalie W. Harrington, 91, a longtime resident of Ridley Park, died on October 7, 2012 at her residence.

Born in New York City, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth Walker. Mrs. Harrington was a resident of Ridley Park for 63 years. She was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed baking and cooking in her kitchen and was known for her great deserts. She was an active member with the Ridley Park Seniors, and went on many of their bus trips to various destinations. She was a member of St. Madeline Catholic Church in Ridley Park and was a member at one time of Sodality at the church.

She is the wife of the late George M. Harrington, Sr., who died in 1999.

She is survived by her daughter, Gael Harrington Eyler; her son, George M. Harrington, Jr.; her 6 grandchildren; her 11 great-grandchildren; and her 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Her funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 12th, at 10 A.M. at St. Madeline Catholic Church, Penn Street and Morton Avenue, in Ridley Park. Her visitation will be on Friday after 9 A.M. at the church. Her burial will be in Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery in Marple Township.

Linda Neiman Love

Linda Neiman Love, 50, a resident of Glenolden and former Collingdale resident, passed away on October 4, 2012 at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park, Pa.

Born in Chester and raised in Brookhaven, Linda was a graduate of Sun Valley High School. She was a resident of Glenolden since 2004, having lived in Collingdale for 17 years before that.

Linda was an avid Phillies fan and was always shopping on the QVC Network. Most of all, she will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife and mother.

She is survived by her husband, Joe; her sons Joey and Danny; her parents, Betty and Rich Neiman; her brother James Neiman; her sister, Nancy Wiedman; and her grandson, Joshua.

Her memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 9th, at 8 P.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood, Pa. Her visitation will be on Tuesday from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at the funeral home. Her burial will be private.

Dorothea Mae Taylor

Dorothea Mae Taylor, 90, a resident of Elkton, Maryland and a former longtime resident of Philadelphia, died on October 1, 2012 at the Pocopson Home in West Chester, Pa.

Born in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Josephine Wick. Mrs. Taylor was an avid reader and enjoyed working in her beautiful gardens. Most of all, she will be remembered for her devotion to her family.

She was the wife of the late Jake Taylor.

She is survived by her sons, Roy (Ethel), Donald (Elsie), George (Helen), Bob (Johanna), Tom (Margaret), and Dave; her daughter, Pam (Bill) Linkfield; her 13 grandchildren; her 14 great-grandchildren; and her great-great-granddaughter.

Her funeral service will be held on Friday, October 5th, at 11 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood, Pa. Her visitation will be on Friday from 9 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home. Her burial will be in Media Cemetery in Media.

Contributions: In lieu of flowers, contributions made to the American Cancer Society, 1623 Locust Street, Philadelphia, Pa. 19103 would be appreciated.

Harriet J. Julian

Harriet J. Julian, 71, of Crum Lynne, died Friday, July 19, 2013 at Taylor Hospice Residence.

Born and raised in Crum Lynne, she was the daughter of the late Adam and Claire Boyd Birl.

She graduated from St. Francis School in Wilmington, DE as a registered nurse. She received a Master’s Degree in Infectious Diseases from Pennsylvania State University.

Miss Julian was retired from Misercordia Hospital in Philadelphia.

She had a great appreciation for the ballet, and enjoyed golf, travel, and dinner with her friends.

She is survived by her brother, Roy Birl; her sister, Margaret Linden; her caregivers, Jason Birl and Chris Linden; and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her family of nursing friends, especially Pat Lamb.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Funeral Service 10 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2013 at Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, Norwood, where friends may call after 9 a.m.

Burial is at Prospect Hill Baptist Church Cemetery, Prospect Park.

Contributions to Taylor Hospice Residence, 300 Johnson Ave., Ridley Park, PA 19078 would be appreciated by the family.

Thomas "Cat" Kanavel

Thomas “Cat” Kanavel, a 28-year resident of Norwood, died Friday, July 19, 2013 at home after a brief illness.

Born in Philadelphia, Tom graduated from Interboro High School in 1976. He was employed by Summit Airlines, US Airways, and most recently, DHL International.

Tommy was the definition of a true friend. He would talk to anyone who would listen. He loved life. He spent most of his 55 years of life laughing and making others laugh. Tommy always had friends, no matter where he went. Whether he knew you or not, he would not hesitate to strike up a conversation, and by the end of the conversation, you were his friend.

Tommy especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was never shy when it came to being the life of the party. His appetite for laughter was outdone only by his appetite for food. Tom loved to eat. Anyone who knew him understood that there would be no leftovers if Tommy was invited to dinner.

Preceded in death by his father, Joseph W. Kanavel, Sr., Tommy’s love of family is carried on by his survivors: his loving wife of 28 years, Cheryl (Emig) Kanavel of Norwood; his son, Robert (Ali Russo) Kanavel and daughter Megan (Charles Bolger) Kanavel, both of Norwood; his beloved granddaughter, Sky Lynne Bolger; and his mother, Joan Kanavel of Bear, DE. Tommy is also survived by his brothers, Joseph (Jackie) Kanavel, Jr. of Norwood, and Robert (Dolores) Kanavel of Summit, DE, and his sisters, Maryann (Mike) Murray of Bear, DE, and Patricia (Ken) Acker of Ridley Park.

Relatives and friends are invited to share stories of Tommy’s life on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at St. Gabriel Roman Catholic Church, 233 Mohawk Ave., Norwood, PA 19074. Calling hours begin at 8:00 a.m. There will be a Funeral Mass at the church beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Burial will be at SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Marple Twp., PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Tommy’s memory for his granddaughter, Sky Lynne Bolger, P.O. Box 56, Norwood, PA 19074.
