Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Ethel C. Farling

Ethel C. Farling, (nee Copeland), age 94, a resident of Boothwyn, Pa., and formerly of South Carolina, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2015.

She was a graduate of Overbrook High School and Strayers Business College. Her passions were being Chairlady of the Deerfield, S.C. fashion shows and painting with water colors.

Ethel was predeceased by her husbands, John Farling, W.M. Perry, and E. Donze’. She was also predeceased by a granddaughter, Rene Schwenke.

SURVIVORS: Her daughters, Lynn Gallagher (Joseph) and Michele Teufel (Bruce); her grandchildren, Suzette Frank, Michele Hennessy, Joshua Teufel, and Zachary Teufel; her 13 great-grandchildren; and her 3 great-great-grandchildren.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Will be held on Saturday, January 17th, at 12 Noon at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood, Pa. 19074.

VISITATION: Will be on Saturday from 11 A.M. to 12 Noon at the funeral home.

BURIAL: Will be private.

CONTRIBUTIONS: In lieu of flowers, contributions made in Ethel’s memory to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 30 S. 17th Street, Suite 800, Philadelphia, Pa. 19103 would be appreciated.

Maria Marguerite Erb

Maria Marguerite Erb, 95, died peacefully on December 30, 2014 at Granite Farms Estates in Media, Pa.

She was born on October 14, 1919, to Marie and Wilhelm Stickler in Stuttgart, Germany. On February 19, 1947, she married Rev. Dr. C. Leighton Erb, and accompanied him to the United States in August, 1949. She remained his steadfast companion throughout his career in the U.S. Army, and served as his helper during his tenure as Rector of St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church in Essington, Pa. from 1968 to 1988. Upon his retirement, they were both residents of Folsom, Pa., until they moved to Granite Farms Estates in 1997.

She was an avid gardener, and enjoyed baking and shopping.

Her beloved husband, Rev. Dr. C. Leighton Erb, died in 1997.

SURVIVORS: She is survived by her two daughters, Heidi Maria Eifert and Suzanne Helen Erb; her grandchildren, Rebecca Maria Monaghan and Justin Erb Schumm; and her great-grandchildren, Patrick Sean Michael Monaghan, Jr. and Liam Joseph Monaghan.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Will be held on Monday, January 5 th, at 11 A.M. at St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, 16 West Third Street, in Essington, Pa. 19029.

VISITATION: Will be on Monday from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the church.

BURIAL: Will be in Edgewood Memorial Park in Glen Mills, Pa.

CONTRIBUTIONS: In lieu of flowers, contributions made in Maria’s memory to St. John the Evangelist Episcopal Church, 16 West Third Street, Essington, Pa. 19029 would be appreciated.

Bernard "Bernie" Mount

Bernard “Bernie” Mount, 73, passed away suddenly on Monday, December 29, 2014, surrounded by his family. Born in Philadelphia, he resided in Glenolden and was formerly of Folcroft. Bernie dedicated his career of 40 years to Boeing and retired as a Tower Operator in 2003.

A proud U.S. Army veteran, Bernie was an expert marksman and served in Korea. He was an active member of the local American Legion Posts # 507 and # 777. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed the Eagles, Phillies, and Penn State football. Golfing was his favorite sport and pastime.

A devoted family man, Bernie was happiest with Patricia, his loving wife of 48 years, his two children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed retirement life kayaking, biking, and relaxing along the bay in Cape May, N.J. Graced with kindness and love, Bernie will be missed by all who were blessed to know him.

He is predeceased by his siblings Helen ( Rogers) and Joseph.

SURVIVORS: He is survived by his wife Patricia (Morgan); his daughter Denise (Timothy Hilsey) of Garnet Valley; son Bernard (Sarah) of Chicago, IL.; two grandchildren: Timothy and Shaina Hilsey; the loving family of Regina (Rogers), Nick and Nicholas Costa; and several nieces and nephews.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Will be held on Tuesday, January 6 th, at 7 P.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood, Pa. 19074.

VISITATION: Will be on Tuesday from 6 P.M. to 7 P.M. at the funeral home.

CONTRIBUTIONS: In lieu of flowers, contributions made in Bernie’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 or to the Glenolden Fire, Police, and Paramedic Departments who endeavored to save his life.

Glenn Harvey Rudolph

Glenn Harvey Rudolph, age 58, passed away on December 22, 2014. He was born to Dorothy and Irvin Rudolph at Lankenau Hospital on May 15, 1956. He grew up in Overbrook Park. He graduated from Malvern Prep and Pierce Junior College where he received an Associates Degree in Business. After graduating, he worked at Green Hill Condominiums as a security guard and had his own landscaping business.

He was a devoted Eagles fan and loved watching or going to the games. He enjoyed spending time with his daughters Kristi and Jenna Rudolph. He was a goofball that always made everyone laugh.

SURVIVORS: His wife Darlene Rudolph; his daughters Kristi and Jenna Rudolph; his grandson Liam Benjamin Rudolph; his sisters and brothers-in-law Marilyn and Paul Greco, Jackie and Angelo Molinaro, and Patty and Al Fredman; and several nieces and nephews.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Will be celebrated on Saturday, January 3 rd, at 12 Noon at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood, Pa. 19074

VISITATION: Will be held on Saturday from 12 Noon to 1:30 P.M. at the funeral home.

Luncheon for the immediate family and close friends at Anthony’s in Drexel Hill from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M.

Verna I. Soprano

Verna SopranoVerna I. Soprano, (Nee Pompilii), age 90, a longtime resident of Norwood, died on December 21, 2014 at The Taylor Hospice House in Ridley Park, Pa. from a short bout with cancer.

She was born Verna Immaculata Pompilii on December 8, 1924, and grew up at 3rd and Broomall Streets in Chester and was a graduate of Chester High School Class of 1942. She was a business major in high school and after graduating worked at The Alloy Wireworks in Prospect Park as a secretary. She attended Saint Anthony’s Catholic Church on 3rd Street in Chester where she married her husband, Anthony J. Soprano of Norwood.

Tony built their house on Delaware Avenue in Norwood and she resided there for 66 years until her illness a few months ago. She managed her husband’s business, Soprano Plumbing and Heating, for 45 years until his retirement in 1993. She was a long time member of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Norwood and also was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post # 7213 in Norwood.

Verna is preceded in death by her husband, Anthony (Tony) Soprano, her parents, Luigi and Vincenza (Jenny) Maiorano Pompilii, and her brother, Albert Pompilii.

SURVIVORS: She is survived by her daughter, Theresa Sminkey of Folsom; her son, Anthony Soprano, Jr. of Philadelphia; her three grandchildren, Christine of Folsom, Curtis of West Grove, Pa., and Laura of Folsom; and her four great-grandchildren.

FUNERAL MASS: Will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 24th, at 10 A.M. at St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church, 233 Mohawk Avenue, in Norwood, Pa. 19074.

VISITATION: Will be on Wednesday from 8:30 A.M. to 9:30 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike in Norwood, Pa. 19074.

BURIAL: Will be in Saints Peter & Paul Cemetery in Springfield, Pa.

CONTRIBUTIONS: In lieu of flowers, contributions made in Verna’s memory to St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church, 233 Mohawk Avenue, Norwood, Pa. 19074 or to Taylor Hospice, P.O. Box 147, Ridley Park, Pa. 19078 would be appreciated.

Joan Barbara Ewing

Joan B. Ewing, age 76, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 19, 2014 at Riddle Memorial Hospital in Media, Pa.

Born in Philadelphia, she was a long-time resident of the Eastwick section of Philadelphia before moving to Claymont, Delaware almost 20 years ago. Mrs. Ewing was the daughter of the late Sephanie and Joseph Janis. She was a proofreader at BioSciences in Philadelphia before retiring in 2000.

Mrs. Ewing’s greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and playing with her beloved dog, Maggie. She was always quick to laugh and greeted everyone with a smile. She enjoyed reading, solving crossword puzzles, watching her favorite TV shows, and tending to her home. She was a great cook, and along with her husband, Bill, always enjoyed entertaining friends and relatives at the holidays.

SURVIVORS: Her husband of 50 years, William; her sons William and John; her daughter, Lisa; her daughters-in-law, Dana and Patricia, and grandchildren, Stephanie, Michael and Jack. She is also survived by her sisters, Ann Janis, Helen Cortez; her brother, Joseph Janis and numerous nieces and nephews.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Will be held on Tuesday, December 23 rd, at 11 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood, Pa. 19074.

VISITATION: Will be on Tuesday from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home.

BURIAL: Will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon, Pa. immediately following the service.

John J. Texter, Jr.

John J. Texter, Jr., age 77, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at Crozer-Chester Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Norwood to the late John Texter and Evelyn (Texter) Kelly.

John was a life long resident of Norwood and attended the former Glen-Nor High School. After school he entered the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and served on the U.S.S. Randolph. John was a member of the John Wesley Cross American Legion Post # 507 in Norwood.

John retired in 1994 from Scott Paper in Chester and then went to work for 18 years at Cardinal Health.

John was full of life and loved to work in his garden. He was an avid traveler and loved to go on cruises every year. He also loved going to Harrah’s Casino in Chester and betting on the horses with his friend Kathy. He also was an avid sports fan and loved going to Spring Training in Clearwater, Florida, with his son Billy.

SURVIVORS: His children, John (Patty) Texter, and William (Jackie) Texter; his sister, Sandy (Ron) Hess; and his grandchildren, Nicolle and Jocelyn Texter.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Will be held on Wednesday, December 17th, at 10:30 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood, Pa. 19074.

VISITATION: Will be on Wednesday from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the funeral home.

BURIAL: Will be at Valley Forge Memorial Gardens in King of Prussia, Pa.

Terry R. Armstrong

Terry R. Armstrong, 59, a resident of Prospect Park, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2014 at the Taylor Hospice Residence in Ridley Park surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Homestead, Florida, he is the son of the late Robert Armstrong and Patricia Mastriano.

He was a hard working union plastering contractor for a number of years. He was a devoted fan of the Eagles, Phillies, and Flyers and was an avid fisherman.

SURVIVORS: His daughter Alicia and his son Jeffrey; and his sister Jeanne Walsh; and his brothers, Kenneth Armstrong and Bill Armstrong.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Will be held on Friday, December 12 th, at 5 P.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood, Pa. 19074

VISITATION: Will be on Friday from 4 P.M. to 5 P.M. at the funeral home.

BURIAL: Will be private.

Carl C. Roddy, Jr.

Carl C. Roddy, Jr., of Prospect Park, Pa., passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the age of 96. Mr. Roddy was a retired accounting supervisor and a lifelong resident of Prospect Park.

Born and raised in Prospect Park and a lifelong resident of the borough, he was the son of the late Carl and Marguerite Roddy. He graduated from Prospect Park High School, where he met his wife, the former Ethel Dalton, and then attended Penn State. He loved the shore, enjoyed boating, fishing and crabbing, spending many summers while working, and many months during his retirement at his summer home of 51 years in Avalon, N.J.; where he and his wife had many friends.

Mr. Roddy was a supervisor in the accounting department of the former Gulf Oil Corp., now Chevron, in the Philadelphia oil refinery. He was a World War II veteran, serving 38 months in North Africa and Italy as a staff sergeant attached to the 34 th Infantry Division, 135 th Regiment, 1 st Battalion, Headquarters Company. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and the Middle Eastern Service Medal with one Silver Service Star.

Mr. Roddy was the former auditor of the Borough of Prospect Park and Prospect Park School District and a former member of the Prospect Park Planning Commission. He was a lifetime member of the Prospect Park Fire Co. since May 1937, as well as the Delaware County Firemen’s Association, the Washington Lodge # 59 F.& A.M., and the Scottish Rite Bodies in the Valley of Philadelphia. He was also a member of the American Legion Post # 507, former president of the Orange Disc Square Club, and former vice-president of the Avalon Square Club.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, the former Ethel Dalton; his brother Richard M. Roddy; and his sister, Ann Snyder.

SURVIVORS: His nephews Kerry Freeman and Robert S. Snyder, Jr.; his nieces Patricia Gemma, Carol Ferrari, Lynn Dombrowski, Marguerite Gisel, Cynthia Sapovits, and Deborah Maxwell.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: Will be held on Saturday, December 13 th, at 10 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood, Pa.

VISITATION: Will be on Saturday from 9 A.M. to 10 A.M. at the funeral home.

BURIAL: Will be private.

CONTRIBUTIONS: In lieu of flowers, Mr. Roddy requested that donations be made to the Masonic Homes, One Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, Pa. 17022-9964.

Harry T. Dougherty

Harry T. Dougherty, 86, of Ridley Park, died on December 6, 2014 at the Crozer-Keystone Hospice Residence at Taylor Hospital in Ridley Park.

Born September 6, 1928 in Philadelphia to the late John B. and Ruth S. Dougherty, he was raised in Norwood and was a 1946 graduate of the former Glen-Nor High School.

Commonly known as “Doc”, he was a Letter Carrier for the Prospect Park Post Office for 35 years before entering a long and active retirement. He had resided in Norwood, Brookhaven, Wallingford, and Ridley Park. Harry found enjoyment in many activities, such as basketball, softball, bowling, square dancing, horseshoes, and playing pinochle. He was an avid Phillies fan since his youth, recanting the times he would take the train with his mother to Shibe Park to take in a ball game.

He is remembered fondly for his frugal habits, his easy way with conversation, and his ability to let others go at their own pace, while certainly preferring a less strained speed in life. All knew he never was without sufficient hard candy found bagged and banded deep in his front pocket and available at request.

Harry was preceded in death by his brothers, John B. Dougherty, Jr. and Robert R. Dougherty Sr., and a grandchild.

SURVIVORS: His three sons, Kenneth L. & wife Stacy L. Dougherty of Sykesville, MD, Alan L. and Sherrie C. Dougherty of Orange, TX, and Wayne H. Dougherty of Hempstead, MD; and his eight grandchildren.

FUNERAL SERVICE: Will be held on Thursday, December 11 th, at 11 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, in Norwood, Pa. 19074.

VISITATION: Will be on Thursday from 9:30 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home.

BURIAL: Will be in Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill, Pa.

NOTE OF THANKS: The family wishes to extend great appreciation to the staff at Crozer-Keystone Hospice for their professional and gifted care that was provided to Mr. Dougherty and his family.
