Edward W. White

Edward W. White of Glenolden, Pa., passed away on Monday, March 9, 2015, surrounded by all those who loved him. Wayne has left this place, not after a long battle with any illness but in graceful surrender to whatever it may be that comes next.

Born in Mount Carmel, Pa. and a graduate of Mt. Carmel High School, Wayne soon went off to serve his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950 - 1952. After his Honorable Service, as a Korean War Veteran, Wayne went on to further his education by attending the University of Pennsylvania Medical School of Technology. After graduating, Wayne worked at the Sacred Heart Hospital for 16 years, until a career enhancing position opened up at the prestigious Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia “CHOP” where he worked for 46 more years until his retirement.

While at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Wayne organized and later became the “Commissioner” of the Softball League of Children’s Hospital. He personally oversaw over 16 years of softball teams and games throughout those wonderful years at “CHOP”. Wayne was such a fan of all the Philadelphia sports teams and a season ticket holder of the Mount Carmel Football team with a reserved seat located in Section C, Row 3, seat No. 27 and he rearely ever missed a game.

Wayne was preceded in death by his father and mother, John & Mildred White. He is survived by his brother, the Rev. John White, his nephews, and his loving extended family.

Wayne had a rare capacity to understand equally the despair and the joys of others, he stood by everyone in his life through any emotional or physical crisis. He was the father you wished you had, the grandfather you never knew, and the best friend to talk over sports and politics with. No misery made him turn away. He brought the same loving strength to our funerals as he did to our weddings, to all our hospital visits and our birthday parties. He understood the depth of every passage.

Wayne left the world a more beautiful and more comfortable than he found it. Everyone felt safe and graceful in his presence. His personal inventory was enormous so he was emotionally and materially generous with everyone. He knew his life was an abundance meant to be shared. Giving was his joy; you could see it in his face. Loyalty and devotion were the fuel that powered his life.

You never heard an ill word spoken of him. He was kind, compassionate, and a true gentleman. Sadly there are few people like that in the world today. It is difficult to understand Wayne’s passing, but we need to be mindful of the true blessing that he was to all of us. That should give us strength to continue on in faith knowing that he would want us to honor his memory. I am confident that Jesus will embrace and welcome him with open arms in heaven.

Funeral arrangements will be held privately. Family, Extended Family, Colleagues, & friends who would like to send condolences to the family may do so by going to: griffithfuneralchapel@verizon.net

In lieu of flowers or Mass Cards, As Wayne would have wanted it and the family requests, memorial donations be sent in memory of Edward W. White to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital online at stjude.org
