Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Linda M. Wertz
Linda M. Wertz, 53, of 122 E. Fourth St., died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2003, at the Williamsport Hospital following an extended illness.
She and her husband, Robert W. Sr. celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary on June 19.
Linda was a homemaker and an avid bingo player. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.
Born Feb. 1, 1950, in Williamsport, she was a daughter of Harold R. Sr. and Verda M. Riggle Johnson.
Surviving besides her husband, are sons, Robert W. Jr., Jason R. and Gary W., all of city; a daughter, Tina L. Phillips of city; a sister, Ruth A. Leonard of Blossburg and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Friday at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave., with Janice Beadle, Deaconess of the Williamsport Assembly of God, officiating. Interment in Montoursville Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday. The family will provide the flowers.

Gretta L. Sunday
Gretta L. (Dot) Sunday, 81, a resident of 65 Sherwood Drive, Montgomery, passed away at 2:55 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, in the Muncy Valley Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit following an extended illness. Born in Montgomery, Lycoming County, on Friday, Aug. 4, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Bessie (Murphy) Wertz.
She was the widow of David T. Sunday who preceded her in death in 1986.
Dot was a homemaker.
She was a member of the New Covenant Assembly of God Church at Montgomery. She enjoyed flowers, humming birds, listening to the news and country and polka music.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Elsie J. and Kenneth Meixel of Montgomery; one sister and brother-in-law, Susan E. and Boyd Golder, Montgomery; five grandchildren, Ann Marie Grow, Julie Lou Campbell, Pamela Jean Buss, Tammy Lyn Davis and Kenneth Eugene Meixel Jr. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Lottie Buck and two brothers, Robert Wertz and Raymond “Jim” Wertz.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Galen R. Betzer Funeral Service, 40 E. Houston Avenue, Montgomery, at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 3, 2003, with the Rev. James R. Pentz, her pastor, officiating. Interment will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Clinton Twp., Lycoming County. Friends may call on Friday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ernest C. Peterman
Mr. Ernest C. Peterman, 94, of 114 Ellis Drive, West Falls, N.Y., and formerly of Montgomery R.D. # 2, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at the Greenfield Health and Rehabilitation Center, Lancaster, New York.
Mr. Peterman was a retiree from the former Williampsort operation of Bethlehem Steel. He had 30 years of employment with the company prior to his retirement.
Born April 3, 1909, at Nordmont, Sullivan County, he was the son of the late Chester and Mary Cathrine Knouse Peterman.
He was widowed on April 8, 1991. His wife was the former Kathryn E. Smith Peterman.
Surviving are two daughters, Beverly J. (Vernon) Sharp of West Falls, N.Y. and Anna Mary Braun of Cheektowago, N.Y.; two sisters; four brothers; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A family visitation and private family funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at the Charles M. Noll Funeral Home, 1 E. Central Ave., South Williamsport. The Rev. Robert L. Driesen, pastor at Messiah Lutheran Church, South Williamsport, will officiate. Private interment will be at the Twin Hills Memorial Park, Muncy.

Dorland E. Bennett
Dorland E. Bennett, of 7164 Pleasant Valley Road, Cogan Station, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003.

John Donald Larson
John Donald Larson, 79, of 319 Smith St., Jersey Shore, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, in Manor Care Health Center, Jersey Shore.
He was born Feb. 6, 1924, in Mahaffey, the son of Bertil G. and Estella E. Larson.
John was married to the former Marjorie M. Bergstrom on Sept. 16, 1946.
John was a mathematics teacher in the Jersey Shore Area Senior High School until the early 1960’s at which time he became principal of the newly created Jersey Shore Junior High School, in the building which is now the Tiadaghton Mall. In 1966, he became principal of the Mars Area Junior-Senior High School in Mars, just north of Pittsburgh. Mr. Larson retired in 1974 to his beloved Pine Creek north of Waterville, where he built his retirement home with the aid of family and a multitude of friends. He was a life member of the Waterville Volunteer Fire Department, active in the Pine Creek Preservation Association, and an elected supervisor of Cummins Township for thirteen years, also a member of the Elks Lodge in Jersey Shore. After his formal retirement from teaching, Mr. Larson continued his involvement with education by substitute teaching and tutoring at-home students until poor health forced him to retire a second time in 2000.
John was an avid fisherman, hunter and pool player.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie M. of Jersey Shore; four children, Jean A. (Robert) Burchell and Marjorie M. Larson, both of Jersey Shore, J. Eric (Julie) Larson of Carlisle and W. Anderson Larson (Pam Styers) of Lock Haven. He is also survived by grandchildren, Lucas Larson, Mike Larson, Megan Larson and Andrea Liebelt as well as two great-grandchildren, Ian and Isaac Liebelt; and a sister, Carolyn (James) Williams of Delaware. He is predeceased by two brothers, William and James and a sister, Arnella Larson Brooks. Numerous nieces and nephews will also miss their “Uncle John” and his stories about Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, Naval Aviation and just about any other subject.
A celebration of John’s life will begin with a visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Rearick-Carpenter Funeral Home, Ltd. “A Life Celebration Home,” 1002 Allegheny St., Jersey Shore. Services will follow at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Donald G. Nice, Chaplain of American Legion Post #36, officiating. Interment will be in the Gettysburg National Cemetery.
Family will provide the flowers. Family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Waterville Volunteer Fire Co., P.O. Box 124, Waterville, PA 17776 or the Jersey Shore Public Library, 110 Oliver St., Jersey Shore, PA, 17740.

M. Louise Lowry
M. Louise Lowry, 83, of 100 S. Main St., Muncy, died Sunday, November 30, 2003, at home.
Her husband of 44 years, Jay S. Lowry, died June 21, 1988. Together they owned and operated the Fort Brady Hotel from 1954 until 1977.
She was a 1938 graduate of Muncy/Muncy Creek High School. During World War II she worked in the bacteriology lab at Elvira Ordinance.
Louise was a member of Clarkstown United Methodist Church.
Born October 30, 1920, in Sonestown, she was the daughter of Harold H. and Verna M. (Little) Houseknecht.
Surviving are three daughters and two sons-in-law, Betty Lou and Erich Frazier of Weston, FL, Roberta L. Vach of Flagler Beach, FL and Ruth C. and Bill Livingston of Flagler Beach, FL; three grandchildren, Ann Louise Livingston of San Francisco, CA, Jay William Livingston of Eugene, OR and Sarah Jane Vach of Flagler Beach, FL.
A funeral service for the family will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 3, at Wallis-Grenoble’s, 121 S. Main St., Muncy. Officiating will be her pastor, the Rev. Henry E. Gable. Burial will be in Muncy Cemetery.
The family will provide the flowers and suggests memorial contributions be made to Muncy Public Library, 108 S. Main St., Muncy, PA 17756 or Keystone Hook and Ladder Ambulance Service, 35 S. Main St., Muncy, PA 17756 or Susquehanna Home Health Care (Hospice), 1100 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport, PA 17701.

James T. Jones Sr.
James T. Jones Sr., 73, of Wellsboro, died Nov. 30, 2003.
Surviving are his wife, six sons, 15 grandchildren, two brothers, four sisters and several nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to Jim’s Life Celebration on Friday, Dec. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Tussey-Mosher’s, a “Life Celebration Home,” 139 Main St., Wellsboro. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, at 9 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Wellsboro.

Roberta Grimes
Roberta O. (Bobbie) Grimes, 67, of 2821 Heshbon Road, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at her home.
Bobbie retired in January 2001 after 38 years with Little League Baseball Inc.
Born Jan. 15, 1936, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of Robert and Frances McDermott Bovee.
Surviving are her husband, Harry C.; a son, William R. (Emily) Webster of Chapel Hill, N.C.; a daughter, Michelle A. (Joseph) Steinbacher of Williamsport; sisters, Debbie (Leo) Damaska and Gail (Paul) Sober, both of Williamsport; and grandchildren, Justin and Shannon Englert and Anna Webster.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Knight-Confer’s, 1914 Memorial Ave., with Pastor John W. Brokopp Sr., officiating. Interment will be at Wildwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday.

Shirley Metzger
Shirley (Castle) Metzger, 79, of Canton, died Nov. 30, 2003.
Surviving are her husband, Walter; two sons, Albert and Fred Metzger; eight grandchildren; and 13 grandchildren.
Calling hours are 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Pepper Funeral Home, Canton. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday, at the East Canton United Methodist Church, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will be in Beech Flats Cemetery.

John L. Faughnan
John L. Faughnan, 63, of 1660 Catherine St., died Dec. 1, 2003, at home.
He is survived by his wife, the former Carmella Esposito; one son, Charles Esposito; and two daughters, Elizabeth Bone and Dawn Faughnan.
A memorial services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the chapel in Wildwood Cemetery. There will be no viewing. Arrangements by Kaufman Funeral Home.

Donald S. DeFaro
Donald S. DeFaro, 92, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003, at the Williamsport home.
Born in Williamsport, April 18, 1911, he was a son of Anthony and Louise Piemonte DeFaro.
Don was an Army veteran of WW II and was in the invasion of Normandy on D-Day. He was awarded the Purple Heart, three Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead. He was a communicant of Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church. He had been employed by Sweet Steel Co. and then the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement.
Survivors include his niece, Betty Mumma (Larry) Hill; a grandnephew, Scott (Brenda) Mumma, all of Jersey Shore; and a cousin, William Delano of Westport, Conn.
Don was predeceased by a brother, James and sister, Helen Andy.
There will be no visitation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Mater Dolorosa Catholic Church, with Msgr. Francis J. Castellano celebrant. Burial will be in Wildwood Cemetery.
The family will provide the flowers.
