Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Doris E. McElroy

Doris E. Walter McElroy, 60, of Spruce Street, Emporium, died Sunday, March 21, 2004, in her home.

Born June 13, 1943 in Irwin Township, Venango County, she was the daughter of John Earl and Thelma M. Coast Walter.

On September 12, 1984 in Grove City she married Rev. Edwin McElroy who survives.

A resident of Emporium since 2000, Mrs. McElroy graduated from Victory Joint High School in 1961 and later received a degree from New Castle Business School.

In 1984 she retired from Slippery Rock University where she had been employed as Executive Secretary to the Dean of Health and Physical Education. Since then she and her husband Rev. Edwin McElroy had served Trinity Yoke Parish in Venango County, Jackson Center Parish in Mercer County, Redstone Parish in Fayette County, Economy United Methodist Church in Beaver County, First Salem United Methodist Church in Warren County and currently served the First United Methodist Church in Cameron County.

She was a member of Barkeyville United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, Susanna Wesley Circle, Deborah Circle and the Mission Society. Mrs. McElroy was also a member and past Worthy Matron of the of the Order of Eastern Star, Grove City Chapter #86. She was also a member of the White Shrine, Order of Eastern Star and was a past advisor to the Rainbow Girls.

In addition to her husband she is survived by: one brother, Newell W. Walter and his wife Emma of Harrisville; two nieces, Mrs. Terry (Deborah) Barr and Sharone A. Walter both of Harrisville; one great niece, Sondra Barr of Harrisville and one great nephew, Stephen Barr also of Harrisville.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday (March 23, 2004). The Rev. Mark E. Goswick of the Savannah United Methodist Church and the Rev. Barbara J. Moore of King's Chapel United Methodist Church co-officiated.

Additional funeral and Committal Services were held in the Barkeyville United Methodist Church in Harrisville, where The Rev. Robert Higginbotham, Kane District Superintendent, and The Rev. Glenn B. Kohlhepp, Butler District Superintendent, co-officiated. They were assisted by The Rev. Stephanie Thompson of the Barkeyville United Methodist Church.

Burial was in Barkeyville Cemetery, Barkeyville.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Emporium, the Barkeyville United Methodist Church, or the Community Nurses, Inc.

Ronald J. Vislusky Sr.

Ronald J. Vislusky Sr., 69, of 335 W. Abbott St., Lansford, died Thursday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Anna (Molokach) Vislusky. They were married for 47 years.

Prior to retiring, he was employed by All Steel of Hazleton.

Born in Shenandoah, he was a son of the late Alex and Clara (Shustack) Vislusky.

He was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Lansford.

Vislusky belonged to the United Auto Workers Union and was a social member of the Italian Club and American Legion, both of Lansford, and the Rod and Gun Club, Coaldale.

Surviving in addition to his widow are three daughters, Dinese of Tamaqua, Michelle Tentylo of Coaldale and Celeste, wife of Michael Bybel of White Bear, Summit Hill; a son, Ronald J. Jr., at home; five grandchildren and two nephews.

The Roche Funeral Home-McNamara Chapel, 3 E. Bertsch St., Lansford, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Hollis Yarborough

Mrs. Marian Yarborough, 80, of 424 Washington St., Tamaqua, died Thursday morning in her home. She was the wife of Hollis Yarborough.

Prior to retiring, she was employed as a secretary.

Born in Frackville, she was a daughter of the late Harry and Margaret (Dixon) Moss, and had lived at various locations in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, including 11 years in Tamaqua.

She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Tamaqua.

The deceased was a 1936 graduate of the former Mahanoy Township High School.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Brian of Coudersport and Robert of Dakota Dunes, S.C.; a brother William of Kendall Park, N.J.; three sisters, Dorothy of Mahanoy City, Elizabeth Oshman of Medway, Mass., and Vera Chase of Hatboro, Pa.; four grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son Richard, who died in 1987.

The Louis Truskowsky Funeral Home, 300 W. Center St., Mahanoy City, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Clifford F. Sell

Mrs. Jean A. Sell, 71, of 801 Main St., Slatington, died Wednesday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. She was the wife of Clifford F. Sell.

She was an assembly line worker for the former Keystone Lamp Factory, Slatington, before retiring.

Born in Palmerton, she was a daughter of the late Robert S. and Esther (Weida) George.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Donna Sell Walters of Slatington; two brothers, Robert of Aquashicola and Bruce of Slatington; four sisters, Florence Bentchspacher of Northampton, Barbara of Allentown, Iva of Walnutport and Hilda Deppe of Columbus, Neb.; two grandchildren, a step-granddaughter and two step-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a stepson, Clifford F. Sell Jr.

Paul A. Laub Sr.

Paul A. Laub Sr., 83, of 309 S. First St., Lehighton, died Thursday in the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Convalescent Center, Mahoning Township. He was the husband of Helen A. (Kemmerer) Laub. They observed their 63rd wedding anniversary last February.

He was a truck driver for the former Interstate Dress Carriers, Lehighton, before retiring in 1977 after 27 years of service. He was also a fireman for the former Lehigh Valley Railroad from 1941-49.

Born in Lehighton, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Esther A. (Hontz) Laub.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lehighton, and a life member of the Lehigh Fire Company No. 1, Lehighton.

Surviving in addition to his widow are three sons, Richard A. of Lewisburg, Union County, Bruce A. Sr. of Lehighton and Paul A. Jr. of Beaver Falls, Beaver County; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The Kenneth N. Phifer Funeral Home, Third and Alum streets, Lehighton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Charles E. Roeder Jr.

Charles E. Roeder Jr., 72, of Owl Creek Road, Tamaqua R.1, died Wednesday in his home. He was the husband of the late Ruth (Strohecker) Roeder.

He worked for the Atlas Powder Company, Reynolds, before retiring in 1987.

Born in Tamaqua, he was a son of the late Charles E. Sr. and Lilly (Zimmerman) Roeder.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater of Operations.

Roeder was a life member of the American Hose Company No. 1, Tamaqua, and a member of the American Legion Post, Senior Citizens and V.F.W. Post, all of Tamaqua, and the West Penn Rod and Gun Club.

Surviving are a son Edward of Mooresville, Ind.; a sister, Alma Klotz of Lehighton; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The Jon M. Zizelmann Funeral Home, 500 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of the arrangements.

George Wells Jr.

George Wells Jr., 79, of 60 Oriole Drive, Palmerton, formerly of Hellertown, died Wednesday in the St. Luke Hospital, Fountain Hill, Bethlehem. He was the husband of of Alexandra (Polsky) Wells. They observed their 49th wedding anniversary last month.

He was a regional sales manager for the former Level Line, Inc., Lakewood, N.J., for many years before retiring in 1980, and later was a part-time sales representative for the Blackstone Building Supply Company, East Brunswick, N.J., for 15 years.

Born in Freemansburg, he was a son of the late George Sr. and Julia (Oros) Wells.

He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Orefield.

Wells was an Army veteran of World War II and a former member of the Edward H. Ackerman American Legion Post 397, Hellertown, and the Hellertown Lions Club.

Surviving in addition to his widow are three sons, George T. of Palmerton, Dr. Greg J. of West Chester, Chester County, and Gordon D. of Whitehall Township; and five grandchildren.

Joseph S. Wanko

Joseph S. Wanko, 75, of 1750 Main St., Northampton, died Sunday in his home.

Born in Northampton, he was a son of the late August and Christina Wanko.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and a social member of the Hokendauqua and Darktown fire companies.

Surviving are a daughter Kathy of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and a sister Helen, wife of Steven Gabovitz of Palmerton.

Llewellyn W. Dyson

Llewellyn W. Dyson, 84, of Pocono Lake, died Wednesday in the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre. He was the husband of the late Florence (Smith) Dyson.

He was employed by Sincavage Lumber, Blakeslee, for nine years before retiring in 1983, and previously had worked for the Pocono Lake Preserve for nine years and as a bus driver for the Split Rock Lodge, Lake Harmony, for 20 years.

Born in Pocono Lake, he was a son of the late S. Freeman and Mary (Wilson) Dyson.

He was a member of the Pocono Lake United Methodist Church.

Dyson was an Army veteran of World War II and a 50-year member of the Barger Masonic Lodge No. 325, Stroudsburg, and a member of the Keystone Consistory, Scranton.

Surviving are a son, Jackie L. of Blakeslee; three brothers, Lester J. of Cresco, Stanley of Broomall, Delaware County, and Charles of East Stroudsburg; four sisters, Helen Smith of Stroudsburg, Geraldine Pope of Cresco, Pauline Dailey of Tobyhanna and Faith Hettle of Swiftwater; a friend, Mary Brong Warner, with whom he resided; and two grandchildren.

The Kresge Funeral Home, Rt. 209, Brodheadsville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Bertha M. Martz

Mrs. Bertha M. Martz, 87, of Emmaus, died Wednesday in the Liberty Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Allentown. She was the widow of Charles W. Martz.

She was an operator for the former South Manufacturing, Allentown, for 20 years before retiring in 1972.

Born in Weatherly, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Rebecca (Barrel) Knappenberger.

She was a member of the Salvation Army, Allentown Corps, for many years.

Surviving is a son, Charles H. of Emmaus.

Mrs. Michael C. Walz

Mrs. Marianne Elizabeth Walz, 37, of Saylorsburg, died Wednesday in her home. She was the wife of Michael C. Walz.

She and her husband owned and operated The Working Dog Association from their home. They were exhibitors and breeders of several breeds of dogs, specializing in bulldogs.

Born in Jenkintown, Montgomery County, she was a daughter of Mrs. Marjorie (Cake) Lawless of Allentown and the late Robert Lawless.

She was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are two daughters, Jessica and Amanda Edwards, both of Allentown.

Mrs. Rosalie M. Sterner

Mrs. Rosalie M. Sterner, 87, of 413 Green St., Brockton, died Thursday morning in the Good Samaritan Hospital, Pottsville. She was the widow of William R. Sterner.

Born in Brockton, she was a daughter of the late Franklin and Sarah (Farrell) John.

She was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Brockton.

Surviving are two daughters, Roseann Push and Lucille Setlock, both of Middleport; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The last member of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harry John; two sisters, Kathryn King and Lucy John; and a granddaughter, Kelly Setlock.

The Thomas J. Bartashus Funeral Home, New Philadelphia, is in charge of the arrangements.
