Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Donald R. Bonser

Donald R. "Duff" Bonser, 76, a resident of Brookmont Health Care Center, Effort, and formerly of Tannersville, died Thursday in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Patricia (Widdoss) Bonser of Scotrun.

Born in McMichaels, he was a son of the late Rufus and Elsie (Buck) Bonser.

He worked at the Pocono Mountain Dairies in McMichaels 40 years, retiring in 1983.

He also played baseball for Reeders in the old Pocono Mountain Baseball League.

He was a member of McMichaels United Methodist Church.

Surviving with his widow are two sons, Donald Bonser Jr. of Tannersville, and George Bonser of Montana; a daughter, Barbara Wiswall in Idaho; four stepdaughters, Karla Anderson in California, Mona Haschak and Lisa Hennings, both of Scotrun, and Abbie Marki of Delaware Water Gap; three brothers, Harold Bonser in Tennessee, Gerald Bonser of McMichaels, and Forrest Bonser of Snydersville; two sisters, Mary Reichart of Lehighton and Evelyn Zettle of Huntington Mills. Also 15 grandchildren.

The William H. Kresge Funeral Home, Inc., Brodheadsville, is in charge of arrangements.

Nellie Nester

Nellie Nester, 86, of 142 Rhume St., Nesquehoning, died Wednesday in the Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale.

She was a sewer for the Kaijay Pants Company, Nesquehoning, before retiring.

Born in Nesquehoning, she was a daughter of the late Luke and Fannie (Barna) Nester.

She was a member of St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, Nesquehoning.

Surviving are a brother Joseph of Nesquehoning; and nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers, Steve, John, Harry and Metro; and four sisters, Kate Gallagher, Fanny Polley, Mary Prusak and Antoinette Laputka.

The Bruce A. Nalesnik Funeral Home, 81 E. Catawissa St., Nesquehoning, is in charge of the arrangements.

Stephen Varanko

Stephen Varanko, 80, of 363 Lehigh Ave., First Floor, Palmerton, died Tuesday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. He was the husband of Helen M. (Oreovec) Varanko. They observed their 58th wedding anniversary last October.

He was a drop forger and foreman for Keystone Forge, Northumberland, for 23 years.

Born in Nesquehoning, he was a son of the late Frank and Mary (Feddock) Varanko.

He was a member of St. John Towamensing Lutheran Church, Palmerton.

An Army veteran of World War II, he also belonged to American Legion Post 44, Northumberland.

Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Frank of Watertown, Conn., and Stephen Jr. of Baldwin, Md.; a daughter, Nancy Ann, wife of Ed Turner of Wharton, Tex.; two brothers, Frank of Chesapeake, Va., and John of Northumberland; a sister Margaret, wife of Wash Pavlik of Rahway, N.J.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The Campton Funeral Home, 525 Delaware Ave., Palmerton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Warren W. Knappenberger

Warren W. Knappenberger, 66, of 4508 Scheidys Road, Coplay, died Wednesday in his home. He was the husband of Shirley M.A. (Rumfield) Knappenberger. They observed their 46th wedding anniversary in August.

He was a truck driver for Horwith Trucks, Northampton, for two years before retiring in 1993, and previously had been an independent truck owner and operator, leasing to various trucking firms in the Lehigh Valley area. He also had worked for the former Jones Motor Company, Inc., Spring City, for 29 years.

Born in Treichlers, he was a son of the late Albert and Rachel (Hoffman) Knappenberger.

He was a member of Union United Church of Christ, Neffs, where he was a deacon and consistory member.

Knappenberger was a past noble grand of Jordan Lodge No. 192, International Order of Odd Fellows, Schnecksville.

Surviving in addition to his widow are four sons, the Rev. James L., Gene and Glen W., all of Washington Township, and Frank A. of Lehigh Township; three brothers, Louis and Stanley, both of Walnutport, and Percy of Washington Township; three sisters, Loretta Herrity of Breinigsville, Martha, wife of Gerald Woodring of Neffs, and June, wife of Ronald Kinek of Whitehall Township; and four grandchildren.

Thomas J. Hollick

Thomas J. Hollick, of New Coxeville, Luzerne County, died Wednesday morning in his home. He was the husband of Irene (Hynick) Hollick. They were married for 48 years.

Before retiring, he was a machinist and tool crib worker for the Dorr-Oliver Corp. for 33 years.

Born in Beaver Meadows, he was a son of the late Michael and Anna (Watro) Hollick.

He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, Beaver Meadows, and the Hazleton Senior Citizens.

Hollick was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a brother, the Rev. Leonard M., pastor of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, McAdoo; four sisters, Mary, wife of George Brazzo, and Kathleen, wife of Bernard Moro, both of Beaver Meadows, Rita, wife of John Hospodar of Moorestown, N.J., and Claire, wife of Stephen Lorince of Weatherly R.D.; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Hearl M. "Sam" Long

Hearl M. "Sam" Long, 76, of 384 Fairview St., Franklin Township, Lehighton, died Tuesday morning in the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 397 Hemlock Drive, Mahoning Township, Lehighton. He was the husband of Beatrice "Betty" (Getz) Long. They observed their 51st wedding anniversary last Christmas Day.

He was an electrician in the maintenance department of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation for 19 years before retiring in 1986.

Born in Mahoning Valley, he was a son of the late William and Katie (Reinhart) Long.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Mahoning Valley.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter, Col. Kay B. Long, a U.S. Air Force Reserve officer stationed at the Willow Grove Air Force Base, Willow Grove, Pa.; a son Kent of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Mrs. Edith DeLong of Mahoning Valley; and a granddaughter.

He was also preceded in death by four sisters, Mrs. Annie Christman, Mrs. Clara Troutman, Mrs. Minnie Peiffer, and Mrs. Ruth Ohl; and five brothers, Elias, Norman, Warren, Paul and John.

The Mayes-Melber Funeral Home, 200 Franklin St., Weissport, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Raymond L. Bradley Sr.

Mrs. Barbara M. Bradley, 59, of Marshalls Creek, died Monday in the Mercy Hospital, Scranton. She was the wife of Raymond L. Bradley Sr. They observed their 40th wedding anniversary last June.

Born in Newark, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Francis E. and Henrietta McGuire, and had resided in Monroe County for the past 10 years, previously having lived in Rockaway, N.J.

Surviving in addition to her husband are four sons, Raymond L. Jr. of Jim Thorpe, Michael A. and John H., both of Marshalls Creek, and Mark L. of Lake Hopatcong, N.J.; a daughter, Suzanne Simmons of Stroudsburg; three brothers, Arthur and John, both of Ledgewood, N.J., and Edward in Florida; two sisters, Constance Diaz of Dover, N.J., and Katherine Conroy of Budd Lake, N.J.; and nine grandchildren.

Mrs. Virginia M. Miller

Mrs. Virginia M. "Ginny" Miller, 76, of Cedarbrook, South Whitehall Township, formerly of Slatington, died Monday in the Sacred Heart Hospital, Allentown. She was the widow of David S. Miller.

She was a presser at the Allen Laundry, Allentown, from 1967-72, and previously was a packer at Trexler Orchards, Orefield, from 1958-67.

Born in Slatington, she was a daughter of the late Owen J. and Eva (Billman) Williams.

Surviving are three sons, David, Evan and Stanley, all of Slatington; three daughters, Arvilla Smiley of Slatedale, Carolyn, wife of Bryan Ahner of Lehighton, and Glennoka of Lansford; two sisters, Sabina, wife of Edward Nierer of Slatington, and Eva Kosman of Schnecksville; 17 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-granddaughter.

Mrs. LaRue G. Coles

Mrs. LaRue G. Coles, 67, of Allentown, died Monday in the Delaware Valley Medical Center, Langhorne. She was the widow of Jacques F. Coles.

She was a waitress for the Fearless Fire Company, Allentown, before retiring, and previously had been an inspector for the former Fairtex Mills, Allentown.

Born in Slatington, she was a daughter of the late Carl E. and Lillian A. (Serfass) Pfaff.

Surviving are a son, Scott F. of Allentown; four daughters, Yvonne Golley and Loretta Zellers, both of Allentown, Charmaine Wieder of Slatington and Nancy Meckes of Seminole, Fla.; five sisters, Viola Kleppinger of Allentown, Phyllis Stahler of Bowmanstown, Ethel Swietzer of Palmerton, Patricia Poniktera of Rochester, N.Y., and Elaine Stevens, residence unknown; and six grandchildren.

John H. Kern Jr.

John H. Kern Jr., 53, of Stroudsburg, formerly of Mahanoy City, died Monday in the Hazleton-St. Joseph Medical Center.

He was last employed as a clerk for the U.S. Postal Service in Stroudsburg, and previously was worked for Children and Youth Services in Monroe and Carbon counties.

Born in Allentown, he was a son of Mildred Bush of Hazleton and John H. Sr. and Rose (Miskar) Kern of Mahanoy City.

The deceased was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church, Stroudsburg.

An Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he graduated in 1968 from East Stroudsburg University with a bachelor's degree in social services.

Surviving in addition to his parents are two sons, Sean and Neal, and a daughter Amie, all of Saylorsburg; and two brothers, Anthony of Elizabethtown, Lancaster County, and the Rev. Martin of Allentown.

Thomas L. Williams

Thomas L. Williams, 74, of Palmerton, died Tuesday in his home. He was the husband of Margaret (Griffiths) Williams. They were married for 52 years.

He was a production foreman for the Ford Motor Company for 29 years before retiring, having last worked in Lansdale.

Born in Nesquehoning, he was a son of the late John and Ann (Truran) Williams, and had lived in Palmerton for the past 16 years, previously residing in Huntington Valley, Montgomery County.

He was a member of St. John Episcopal Church, Palmerton, and the Nesquehoning Senior Citizens.

Williams also belonged to the Friendship-Williams Blue Lodge No. 400, F. and M., Jenkintown. He was a 32nd degree mason and a shriner.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter, Carole Perkins of Collegeville, Pa.; a brother John of Summit Hill; two sisters, Georgena Strauss of Lansford and Minnie Gower of White Haven; two nieces and a nephew.

Daisy M. Cole

Daisy M. Cole, 79, of 101 S. First St., Lehighton, died Monday in the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Born in Palmerton, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Clara (Seipler) Dotter.

She worked as a sewing machine operator at various mills and later as a cook in area clubs.

She attended Trinity Evangelical Church, and was a member of the Frater Order of Eagles Aerie 650, Lehighton.

Surviving are two sons, Ronald of Tampa, Fla., and Randy of Iberia, Mo.; two daughters, Clara Mikulski and Sandra Sparich, both of Hazleton; two brothers, Roy of Palmerton R.1, and Lewis of Lehighton; three sisters, Dorothy Marlow of Palmerton, Violet Kroft of Mahoning Valley and Irene Moreira of Slatington. Also 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

The Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, Fourth and Iron Streets, Lehighton, is in charge of arrangements.

Williams memorial

A memorial service for Thomas L. Williams, 74, of Palmerton, who died Tuesday in his home, will be Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 11 a.m. in St. John's Episcopal Church, Palmerton.

Erma A. Berger

Erma A. Berger, 85, formerly of 1101 Fairyland Road, Lehighton, died Friday at Mahoning Valley Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of Wilmer C. Berger.

Born in Mauch Chunk, she was a daughter of the late Roland L. and Minnie G. (Beltz) Ritter.

She was a sewing machine operator for the former Barson and Bishop Factory in Lehighton.

She was a member of Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, Lehighton, and the Big Creek Grange.

Surviving are two sisters, Alberta Arner and Romaine Ashner, both of Lehighton. Also a niece and several nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son Wilmer who died in 1980.

The Mayes-Melber Funeral Home, Weissport, is in charge of arrangements.
