Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

John E. Ohlsen

John E. Ohlsen, 43, of 130 Hemlock Trail, Lehighton, died Sunday in a motorcycle accident on Route 715 in Jackson Township, Monroe County. He was the husband of Cynthia A. (Moser) Ohlsen. They observed their 20th wedding anniversary last Oct. 9.

He was a controller for Bemis, Inc., Hazleton, and a certified public accountant.

Born in Honesdale, Wayne County, he was a son of the late Frederick W. and Mary Catherine (Troutman) Ohlsen.

He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Albrightsville.

Ohlsen was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He was a member of the university's Alumni Association and Phi Eta Figma and Phi Kapta Phi honor society fraternities. He received his master's degree in business administration from Wilkes College.

A former Jim Thorpe Area High School wrestler, he was recently inducted into the Jim Thorpe Sports Hall of Fame.

Ohlsen was active in Knee-Hi and Little League in Lehighton.

He was a member of Carbon F. and A.M. Lodge No. 242 and the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter, Krista R., a student at Penn State; a son, Matthew J., at home; a brother, Frederick W. of Boyertown; and his stepmother, Ruthann Ohlsen of Jim Thorpe.

The Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, is in charge of the arrangements.

Edwin C. Kuehner

Edwin C. Kuehner, 74, of 1545 Oak Wood Drive, Hanover, York County, died Sunday in his home. He was the husband of Janet (Kocarnik) Kuehner. They observed their 42nd wedding anniversary in May.

He was a chemist with the National Bureau of Standards, Gaithersburg, Md., for 30 years before retiring in 1979.

Born in Palmerton, he was a son of the late Frederick and Annie (Schkowski) Kuehner.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater of Operations.

He was a 1951 graduate of Moravian College and received a master's degree in chemistry from American University, Washington, D.C.

Kuehner was a member of the Harold H. Bair American Legion Post 14 and the Loyal Order of the Moose, both of Hanover, and the Hanover area Polka Club.

He also belonged to the American Chemical Society, American Association of Retired Persons and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Timothy P. of Lakeland, Fla., and Larry S. of Ijamsville, Md.; a brother, Allen D. of Northampton; a sister, Ada M. Naylor of Egypt; and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Paul D. Stauffer

Mrs. Doris E. Stauffer, 67, of Allentown, died Monday in her home. She was the wife of Paul D. Stauffer. They observed their 47th wedding anniversary last January.

She was a food preparer for ARA Food Services, Allentown, for 12 years before retiring in 1992.

Born in Allentown, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Lucy (Mosser) Snyder.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Patricia E., wife of Glenn R. Ziegler of Allentown; four sons, Donald P. of Macungie, David P. of Marlton, N.J., Jeffrey E. of Allentown and Brian K. of Emmaus; three sisters, Evelyn German of Allentown, Lorraine Brader of Whitehall Township and Louise Taschner of Kunkletown; two brothers, Richard of Allentown and James of Toms River, N.J.; and nine grandchildren.

Mrs. Phillip W. Hunsinger

Mrs. Mary Louise Hunsinger, 82, of 1502 Hottle Ave., Bethlehem, died Monday in the St. Luke Hospital, Fountain Hill, Bethlehem. She was the wife of Phillip W. Hunsinger. They observed their 60th wedding anniversary in August.

A 1936 graduate of the former Allentown Hospital School of Nursing, she was a registered nurse for Dr. Francis F. Meilicke, Bethlehem, for several years before retiring.

Born in Bethlehem, she was a daughter of the late Henry W. and Mary E. (Tombler) Klase.

She was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Bethlehem, where she belonged to the Lunch Bunch and the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

The deceased was a member of the Calypso Chapter No. 163, Order of Eastern Star, Bethlehem.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Douglas P. and Henry W., both of Bethlehem; a daughter, Pastor Joanne P., wife of Pastor Eric B. Stenman of Hanover; two brothers, Milton H. of Bethlehem and Richard S. of Slatington; and eight grandchildren.

John S. Ballick

John S. Ballick, 57, of 30 E. Oak St., Tresckow, died Monday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. He was the husband of the late Mary Anne (Johnson) Ballick.

He was a machinist for 34 years with Dorr-Oliver, Hazleton.

Born in Tresckow, he was a son of the late John and Anna (Tokar) Ballick.

He was a member of St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, McAdoo, the Tresckow Fire Company, Education Circle of United Slovakians and the United Association of Machinists.

Surviving are a daughter Kathleen, at home; three sons, John Jr. of Tresckow, Donald, at home, and David of Beaver Brook; a sister, Dolores Brown of West Wyoming; a brother Michael of Tresckow; five grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

LaRue Haggerty

LaRue Haggerty, 76, of 397 Hemlock Drive, Lehighton, died Monday evening in the Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton.

She was employed as a clerk by the Legal Services of Northeastern Pennsylvania, Inc., Lehighton office, until retiring.

Born in Lehighton, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Nellie (Frederick) Haggerty.

She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Lehighton.

Surviving are a daughter, Donna M. Mullen of Lehighton; a brother William of Allentown; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

The Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, Fourth and Iron streets, Lehighton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Theodore T. Schultz

Theodore T. Schultz, 85, of Saylorsburg R.6, died Wednesday in his home. He was the husband of Joan (Smiley) Schultz. They observed their eighth wedding anniversary in May.

His first wife, Marie (Hartmann) Schultz, preceded him in death. They had been married for 54 years.

He worked for the Pennsylvania State Liquor Stores for 20 years, including the past 15 as a manager, before retiring in 1975.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late Henry and Mary (McFeeley) Schultz.

He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Gilbert, where he was a cantor and sang in the choir. For the past 20 years, he also sang with the Golden Chords, a senior citizens choral group that entertains weekly at local nursing homes.

In 1954, he became the first president of the Holy Name Society in the new Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Brodheadsville. A 3rd degree Knight, he was a charter member of the Monsignor McHugh Council No. 7141, Knights of Columbus.

Schultz was a charter member of the Fairview Senior Citizens, Brodheadsville, and a member of the Young-at-Heart Senior Citizens, Kresgeville.

He was the co-founder and an honorary life member of the Chestnuthill P.T.A. He also helped to organize Troop 98 of the Boy Scouts of America in Brodheadsville, and served as a committee member for several years. He was a volunteer with the Monroe County Meals on Wheels.

In 1988, he was made an honorary member of the Mineola Grange, Brodheadsville, for his outstanding service to the community. He was honored that same year for his community service by being names Knight of the Year by the Knights of Columbus and Citizen of the Year by the Western Pocono Lions Club. The Schultzes had previously been honored by the Knights as their Family of the Year.

Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Thomas E. of Hadensville, Va., and Henry of Easley, S.C.; three daughters, Marie McBride of Isle of Palms, S.C., Barbara Steidinger of Bethlehem and Nancy Manento of Saylorsburg; six stepsons and four stepdaughters; a brother Charles of Staten Island, N.Y.; 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 13 step-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a son, Theodore Thomas Jr.

The Kresge Funeral Home, Rt. 209, Brodheadsville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Charles M. Barger

Charles M. Barger, 78, of Mount pocahontas, Albrightsville, formerly of Hatboro, died Tuesday in his home. He was the husband of Nancy F. (Lennox) Barger. They were married for 51 years.

He was a carpenter with Carpenter's Local No. 8 for 47 years before retiring.

Born in Atlantic City, N.J., she was a daughter of the late Theresa (Maywell) Barger.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 101st Airborne in Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and other campaigns.

A scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America, he was also active with the YMCA Indian Guides and the Roslyn Athletic Association. He was a member of the Penn Forest Fire Company.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter Linda, wife of Denny Bomboy of Lansdale; two sons, Mike of Albrightsville and Bob of Shutesbury, Mass.; two sisters, Dorothy Utzy and Bernice Fleming, both of Hatboro; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Iona M. Wechsler

Iona M. Wechsler, 73, of 1134 Tremont Circle, Whitehall Township, formerly of Northampton, died Wednesday in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Robert Charles, with whom she resided.

The deceased was a machine operator for the former Cross Country Clothes, Northampton.

Born in Cementon, she was a daughter of the late Arthur W. and Helen E. (Borger) Meckes.

She was a member of the Egypt United Church of Christ, Whitehall, where she was a former Girl Scout leader.

Surviving in addition to her daughter are another daughter Sharon, wife of Wilbert Dreher of Northampton; a son, Ronald A. of Neffs; two brothers, Alvin of Kunkletown and Bartine of Neffs; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Herbert G. Bush

Herbert G. Bush, 77, of Stroudsburg, died Wednesday in his home. He was the husband of Eva M. (Cowan) Bush. They were married for 56 years.

He owned and operated Bush's Garage, Stroudsburg, for 26 years before retiring in 1985.

Born in Stroudsburg, he was a son of the late George Herbert and Margaret (Kerner) Bush.

He was a member of the Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, Mount Pocono.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in Germany and was a member of the Thomas P. Lambert V.F.W. Post 2540, Stroudsburg, the George N. Kemp American Legion Post 346, East Stroudsburg, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Stroudsburg.

Surviving in addition to his widow are two daughters, Karen Ballew and Kathleen Bute, both of Crestline, Calif.; a son Cecil and two sisters, Margaret Doleiden and Kathryne, all of Stroudsburg; a brother Theodore of Brodheadsville; six grandsons, six great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Joseph L. Dedrick Jr.

Joseph L. Dedrick Jr., 76, of New Ringgold R.1, formerly of Perkasie, died Tuesday morning in his home. He was the husband of Lillian M. (Mace) Dedrick. They observed their 56th wedding anniversary in April.

He was employed as a former service engineer and later manager of the service department for the East Coast for the Signode Corporation, Glenview, Ill., from 1953 until retiring in 1987.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Joseph L. Sr. and Marie T. (Loesch) Dedrick.

He was a member of the United Church of Christ congregation of Zion Lutheran and UCC Church, New Ringgold R.2.

Dedrick was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member and former commander of the Bauer-Hartman-Marszelek V.F.W. Post, Andalusia, Bucks County.

He was a former supervisor and board chairman of East Rockhill Township, Bucks County, serving from 1970-82.

Dedrick also belonged to the Artisans Order of Mutual Protection, Philadelphia.

Surviving in addition to his widow are two daughters, Judith Ann, wife of Leroy Morgan of Sellersville, and Linda C. of Pottstown; and three grandchildren.

The Robert S. Nester Funeral Home, Rt. 309, Snyders, is in charge of the arrangements.

Haggerty services

A Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. LaRue M. Haggerty, 76, of 397 Hemlock Drive, Lehighton, who died Monday in the Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton, will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Lehighton, followed by interment in the parish cemetery, Lehighton. No calling hours will be held.

The Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, Fourth and Iron streets, Lehighton, is in charge of the arrangements.
