Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Robert J. Anderson Jr.

Robert J. Anderson Jr., 76, of 5300 Russel Court, Whitehall Township, died Thursday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Hazel J. (Elston) Anderson.

He was a packer at M & M Mars, Hackettstown, N.J., for five years, and previously was a milk truck driver for 30 years for H.L.F. McBrides, Goshen, N.J.

Born in Scranton, he was a son of the late Robert J. Sr. and Anna (Edwards) Anderson.

He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Anderson was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter Nancy, wife of Dale Tift of Slatington; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Irene M. Carr

Mrs. Irene M. Carr, a guest at the Shenandoah Manor Nursing Home, formerly of Mahanoy City, died Saturday afternoon in the manor. She was the widow of James Carr, who died in 1984.

Before retiring, she worked at the City Shirt Company, Mahanoy City.

Born in Scranton, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary Mariken.

She was a member of St. Canicus Catholic Church and the Elks Club Ladies Auxiliary, both of Mahanoy City, and the International Ladies Garment Workers Union.

The deceased was a 1940 graduate of the former Mahanoy City High School.

Surviving are two sons, Gerald of Allentown and Joseph of Southampton, N.Y.; two daughters, Joyce, wife of Floyd Baskerville of Bethlehem, and Janet, wife of Thomas Deffley of Barnesville; two sisters, Frances Toomey of Philadelphia and Ann Tucker of Red Bank, N.J.; eight grandchildren, a great-grandchild and nieces and nephews.

Joseph S. Clay

Joseph S. "Bud" Clay, 86, of 708 Center Ave., Jim Thorpe, died Monday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Elnora (Brooks) Clay. They were married for seven years.

His first wife, the former Marie Long, died Nov. 11, 1986. They had been married for 51 years.

Clay was an agent for the Prudential Insurance Company for 31 years before retiring in 1971, having worked in the Nesquehoning and Penn Forest Township areas and later in the Kresgeville and Gilbert areas.

Born in Pottsville, he was a son of the late Gordon S. and Malinda (Bierman) Clay.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in the Heights section of Jim Thorpe, where he was a choir member for many years and also served on the council.

Clay served on the former Mauch Chunk Council for many years.

An avid fisherman and hunter, he was also known for his baking skills. He was secretary of the Chateau Sportsmen's Club in Lackawaxen for 40 years.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter Constance, wife of Edward F. Melber Sr., and a son, Ralph W., both of Jim Thorpe; two stepdaughters, Debra, wife of Gerald Masavahe of Palmerton, and Cheryl, wife of Michael Salla of Plano, Tex.; seven stepsons, Anthony, Charles, Vincent and Wayne Vasiliou, all of Summit Hill, Carl Vasiliou of Lansford, Nicholas Vasiliou of Hellertown and Robert Vasiliou of Mahanoy City; three sisters, Mrs. Virginia Puschock, Mrs. Lorraine Serfass and Blanche, wife of Kermit Ruff, and two brothers, Gordon and Norman, all of Lehighton; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mrs. Naomie Sensinger, Mrs. Margery Walck and Mrs. Geraldine Hill.

The Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, is in charge of the arrangements.

Clay services: Funeral services for Joseph S. "Bud" Clay, 86, of 708 Center Ace., Jim Thorpe, who died Monday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from the Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, with the Rev. Sara Ehrets officiating, followed by full military services and interment in the Evergreen Cemetery, Jim Thorpe. Calling hours are scheduled from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home.

Clay was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served as a motor machinist's mate in the South Pacific. He was a member of the Dolon-Jones-Martino American Legion Post 304 and the Diligent Hose Company, both of Jim Thorpe.

Joseph Sylvester

Joseph Sylvester, 81, of 40 N. Ninth St., Bangor, died Sunday in the Easton Hospital. He was the husband of Carmel (Cestellucci) Sylvester. They observed their 58th wedding anniversary in June.

A member of the Textiles Workers Union, he was a dyer for the Oxford Textile Company, Oxford, N.J., for 21 years before retiring in 1979, and previously had been employed by the Sanco Dye Works in New Jersey and Merit Gas Station, Bangor.

Born in Bangor, he was a son of the late Pellegrino and Mary (Confalone) Sylvester.

He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Roseto.

Sylvester was a Navy veteran of World War II, having served aboard the USS Alaska. He was a member of the Martocci-Capobianco American Legion Post 750, Roseto, and the V.F.W. Post 739, Bangor.

He was a member and past president of the former 4th Ward Citizens Club, Bangor; a former coach in the Bangor Little League; and a member of the Columbia Fire Company, Roseto, and the Slate Belt Quoit League.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a daughter, Johanna Shoemaker of Pen Argyl; three sons, Joseph P. and Vincent, both of Bangor, and James of Wind Gap; a brother John of Kunkletown; a sister, Nellie Difilippantonio of Bangor; 10 grandchildren and a great-grandson.

He was also preceded in death by a son John.

Dillard E. Adams

Dillard Eugene "Sarge" Adams, 61, of Plant City, Fla., formerly of Germansville, died Friday in his home.

He was a master sergeant in the Army before retiring, having been an assistant recruiting sergeant for Lehigh, Monroe, Northampton and Schuylkill counties.

He served in Vietnam, Korea, Germany and France and was a recipient of the Bronze Star and Commendation Medal with three clusters.

He was born in Venice, Fla.

Surviving are a son, Ronald A. of Slatington; two daughters, Maria M. Beltz of Slatington and Sondra R. Herman of Schnecksville; two sisters, Evelyn Gallo and Beatrice Hamm, both of Plant City; and two grandchildren.

Mrs. Margaret Lapos

Mrs. Margaret Lapos, 86, formerly of 204 W. Ridge St., Lansford, died today in the Hometown Nursing Home, Hometown, Tamaqua R.2.

The Skrabak-Parambo Funeral Home, 210 E. Bertsch St., Lansford, is in charge of arrangements.

Boyle services

Funeral services for Mrs. Grace E. Boyle, 79, of 536 E. Union St., Tamaqua, who died Sunday evening in the Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia, will be held at 9:40 a.m. Thurssday from the Roche Funeral Home, 237 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Jerome Catholic Church, Tamaqua, and interment in Sky-View Memorial Park, Hometown, Tamaqua R.2. A calling period is scheduled from 8:45-9:40 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home.

Mrs. Esther M. Snyder

Mrs. Esther M. Snyder, 93, formerly of Fogelsville and Wescosville, died Sunday in the Lutheran Home at Topton. She was the widow of Lee R. Snyder.

Born in Albany Township, Berks County, she was a daughter of the late Alfred S. and Ellen (Levan) Bond.

She was a member of Jacob's United Church of Christ, Jacksonville.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Ernest L.

Mrs. George V. Boyle

Mrs. Grace E. Boyle, 79, of 536 E. Union St., Tamaqua, died Sunday evening in the Graduate Hospital, Philadelphia. She was the wife of George V. Boyle.

Born in Jim Thorpe, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Clara (Weaver) Gallagher.

She was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church, Tamaqua.

Surviving with her husband are five sons, Joseph of Fleetwood, George Jr., Dennis Sr., Francis Sr. and Eugene Sr., all of Tamaqua; three sisters, Irene Mann and Patricia Smith, both of Jim Thorpe; and Clar, of Georgia; four brothers, Jack of Georgia, Francis of California, Ronald of Penn Forest Township, and James of Jim Thorpe; 18 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three sons, Bernard, Edward and Thomas; a sister, Josephine Flannigan; and three grandchildren.

The Roche Funeral Home, 237 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

Greg C. Wetterau

Greg C. Wetterau, 43, died Saturday in his home in Baltimore, Md.

He had been a self-employed, private technology consultant.

Born in Tamaqua, he was a son of the late Charles E. and Thelma (Linkhorst) Wetterau.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tamaqua.

He is survived by aunts, uncles and cousins.

The E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

Peter Zahorodny

Peter Zahorodny, 79, of 230 Broadview Drive, Jim Thorpe, died Wednesday evening in the Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. He was the husband of the late Mary (Rosko) Zahorodny, who died on Feb. 9, 1991.

He worked for the Hoffman-LaRoche Pharmaceutical Company, Nutley, N.J., until retiring.

Born in Northampton, he was a son of the late Paul and Tessie (Kazmirik) Zahorodny.

He was a member of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church, Palmerton.

Surviving are three daughters, Linda Humphrey of Phillips, Maine, Arlene Pisarski of Plover, Wis., and Patricia, wife of James Schafer of Jim Thorpe; a brother John of Taylor, S.C.; two sisters, Anna of Manhattan, N.Y., and Helen Dubensky of Massapequa Park, N.Y.; six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

The Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, is in charge of the arrangements.

Clara M. Handwerk

Clara M. Handwerk, 74, formerly of Allentown, died Thursday in Cedarbrook, South Whitehall Township.

Born in Berlinsville, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Sabina (Kunkle) Handwerk.

Surviving are a son, Leon M. Wetzel of Bath; a sister, Evelyn Hebelka of Allentown; and eight grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Larry C. Wetzel.

John J. Keating

John J. "Jack" Keating, 77, of Pleasant View Lake, Brodheadsville, died Thursday in the Palmerton Hospital. He was the husband of June (Finley) Keating. They observed their 56th wedding anniversary last November.

He was a wholesale inventory manager for Kelly Car and Truck Center, Emmaus, and previously had worked for Motor Twins Ford, Wilkes-Barre; Community Buick, Kingston; and the Ertley dealership, formerly of Kingston.

Born in Edwardsville, Luzerne County, he was a son of the late James and Cecelia (Barowski) Keating.

He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Brodheadsville.

Surviving in addition to his widow are two sons, Patrick of Bethlehem and Mark of Lake Arrowhead, Waluska, Ga.; a brother James of Folcroft, Delaware County; two sisters, Mary of Edwardsville and Carol of Lyndhurst, N.J.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a son Christopher.

Mary Catherine Kern

Mary Catherine Kern, 58, of 430 E. Bertsch St., Lansford, died Thursday in her home.

She was a registered nurse and supervisor at the St. Joseph Hospital, Philadelphia, where she graduated from its nursing school.

Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Mary F. (O'Donnell) Kern.

She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church, Lansford.

Surviving are a brother Paul of Mechanicsburg, Cumberland County; a niece and a nephew.

The Skrabak-Parambo Funeral Home, 210 E. Bertsch St., Lansford, is in charge of the arrangements.
