Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Mrs. Sarah M. Grohol

Mrs. Sarah M. Grohol, 85, formerly of Weatherly, died early Monday in the Hometown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Tamaqua R.2. She was the widow of George A. Grohol, who died in 1982.

She was last employed as a nurse's aide at the former Hazleton State General Hospital.

Born in West Hazleton, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Julia (Stadnick) Vetter.

She was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, and a former member of the Senior Citizens Friendship Club, both of Weatherly.

Surviving are two brothers, Henry of Shady Side, Md., and John of Mountaintop; four sisters, Leona Moon of Weatherly, Mary Pasko of Cleveland, Ohio, Helen Wolf of East Brunswick, N.J., and Genevieve Bubrowski of Hazleton; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Stanley, Leo and Joseph.

Mrs. Josephine M.Breston

Mrs. Josephine M. Breston, 84, of Sterling Heights, Mich., formerly of 222 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, died Monday in the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Celeste and Tim Simon, with whom she resided.

The deceased was the widow of Michael J. Breston, who died in 1970.

She was the daughter of the late Andrew and Josephine Mokry.

She was a former member of SS. Peter and Paul Church, Tamaqua.

Surviving in addition to her daughter are a brother, Andrew Mokry; a sister Irma, wife of Michael Karabinos of Tamaqua; and several nephews and nieces.

Services will be held from SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church, Sterling Heights, Mich. A memorial mass will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 14, at SS. Peter and Paul Church, Tamaqua.

John W. Thomas

John W. Thomas, 96, formerly of 222 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, died Monday in the Masonic Home, Elizabethtown. He was the husband of the late Miriam (Snyder) Thomas, Myrtle Thomas and Isabella (Keilman) Thomas.

Prior to retiring, he was employed by the former Bundy Tubing Company, Hometown.

Born in Gilberton, he was a son of the late Albert G. and Annie (Judd) Thomas.

He was a member of Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church and F. and A.M. Lodge No. 238, both of Tamaqua; the Lehigh Consistory; Reading Shrine Loyal Arch Chapter 177; Knights Templar of Mahanoy City; Anthracite Council, Hazleton; Schuylkill Shrine, Pottsville; and the Tamaqua B.P.O. Elks.

Thomas was a veteran of World War I and World War II.

Surviving are two daughters and two sisters, Mrs. Minnie Joyce and Mrs. Martha Marconis, both of Robling, N.J.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Lemuel and Albert; and two sisters, Mrs. Hattie Kish and Mrs. Mary Whitehorn.

The Robert C. Reeser Funeral Home, 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Annie B. Everett

Mrs. Annie B. Everett, 100, formerly of 823 Iron St., Lehighton, died early today in the Gnaden Huetten Nursing Center, Lehighton. She was the widow of Jacob T. Everett, who died many years ago.

She was employed as a cafeteria worker for Cedar Crest College, Allentown, for many years until retirement.

Born in New Tripoli, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin and Agnes (Kressley) Henninger.

She was one of the oldest members of the New Life Evangelical Lutheran Church, New Tripoli; Golden Agers of Lehighton and Mahoning Valley; Daughters of America, New Tripoli; and the ladies auxiliary of the Lynnport Fire Company.

Surviving are a son, Robert of Albuquerque, N. Mex.; a daughter, Caroline, wife of Wilmer Odenheimer of New Tripoli; Elmer Everett, her son-in-law, with whom she resided; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two daughters, Lillian Everett and Ruth Sechler; and a sister, Mamie Henninger.

The Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, Fourth and Iron sts., Lehighton, is in charge of arrangements.

Howard Nichols

Howard M. Nichols, 84, of 18 Maple St., Roulette, died Friday (Nov. 5, 2004) in the Guy and Mary Felt Manor, Emporium.

Born Aug. 6, 1920, in Roulette, he was a son of Henry H. and Aleta B. Goodwin Nichols. On Feb. 15, 1941, in Erie, he married Lillian E. Carlson, who died Aug. 29, 2004. They were married 63 years.

Mr. Nichols was a press operator at the Pittsburgh Corning Corp., Port Allegany, retiring in 1982 after 42 years of service.

He was a resident of the area for 63 years, coming to the area from Lewis Run. He attended the Riverside Methodist Church and the First Baptist Church, both of Roulette.

He was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), and was a former member of the Roulette Fish and Game Club and the Potter County Snowmobile Association.

Surviving are a son, Theodore C. Nichols of Emporium; two daughters, Sandra K. Lambert of Clinton, Conn., and Patricia A. Brannon of Atlanta, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Julia L. Mathews of Corry; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by five brothers and six sisters.

Funeral services were held Tuesday (Nov. 9, 2004) at the Switzer Funeral Home with the Rev. T. Lee Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Card Creek Cemetery, Roulette.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Arthur J. Reese

Arthur J. "Art" Reese, 72, of 401 North St., Jim Thorpe, died Monday in Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. He was the husband of Loretta (Youngkin) Reese. They were married 54 years last month.

He was a fireman at the Carbon County Courthouse, Jim Thorpe, for 12 years before retiring in 1987. Before that he was a truck driver and delivered coal for the former Neast & Company, Jim Thorpe.

Born in Tamaqua, he was a son of the late Arthur and Myrtle (Draper) Reese.

He was a member of Christ United Church of Christ, Jim Thorpe.

He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served with the 47th Tank Division in northern France, central Europe and Germany, where he received the Purple Heart.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Arthur W. and Randy L., both of Jim Thorpe; a sister, Betty, wife of Paul Bresslin of Pittsburgh; a brother, the Rev. Donald Reese of Lake Hauto; four grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, William.

The Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Clara L. Waring

Mrs. Clara L. Waring, 92, of 85 Maple Drive, Palmerton, died Friday in Friends Hall, West Chester, Chester County. She was the wife of the late Robert K. Waring.

Born in Indian, Indiana County, she was a daughter of the late Leroy and Leah (Robinson) Lane.

She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Palmerton.

She was a member of the library board and hospital auxiliary, both of Palmerton, where she received a pin for 1, 000 hours of hospital service in 1985; and was a volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile.

Surviving are two sons, Robert K. of Downingtown, Chester County, and David L. of Portland, Ore.; a brother, Malcolm of Baltimore, Md.; two sisters, Leah Staley of Cambridge, Md., and Nancy Hebb of Baltimore; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The Cremation Society of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Z. McGroarty

Mrs. Mary Z. McGroarty, 86, of 201 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, died Monday in Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale. She was the widow of John McGroarty, who died in 1941.

She was employed by the former Atlas Powder Company, Reynolds, Tamaqua R.1, before retiring.

Born in Tamaqua, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Helen (Gazdik) Zupko.

She was a member of St. Jerome's Catholic Church and Senior Citizens, both of Tamaqua.

Surviving are a son, Tony of Paducah, Ky.; a sister, Mrs. Helen Daderko of Tamaqua; and two brothers, Arthur Revak of McAdoo and Michael Zupko of Tamaqua.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, John Zupko, Andy Revak and Walter Revak; and three sisters, Anna Fauzio, Margaret Bitner and Joan Deavor.

The Roche Funeral Home, 237 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

Burd services

Funeral services of Charles "Kazook" Burd, 78, of 166 Dodson St., Mary D, who died Monday morning in his home, will be held on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the Roche Funeral Home, 237 E. Broad St., Tamaqua.

Born in MaryD, he was a son of the late Charles P. and Annie (Walakunis) Barkurtis.

He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and was a member of the crew that was responsible for arming the "Enola Gay".

He was a lifetime member of the West Penn Rod & Gun Club.

The Roche Funeral Home, 237 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

Henry A. Petritsch

Henry A. "Hen" Petritsch, 82, of 540 E. Elm St., Tamaqua, died this morning in Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. He was the husband of Mary E. (Stidham) Petritsch.

Prior to retiring, he had been employed as a truck driver at the former Schaefer Brewery, Fogelsville.

Born in Hazleton, he was a son of the late John and Mary (Pjuko) Petritsch.

Petritsch was a member of St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church, Tamaqua.

Surviving with his wife are a son, Henry E. Petritsch Jr. of New Ringgold R.2; a daughter, Rose Marie Epler of Tamaqua; three sisters, Ernestine Petritsch of New Jersey, Mrs. Henrietta Matuskiewitz of Bethel, and Mrs. Valerie Pupko of Grier City; one brother, Fred Petritsch of Mahanoy City; six grandchildren and six-great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Francis, Jacob and Ernest Petritsch.

The Jon M. Zizelmann Funeral Home, 500 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

Rose Marie Price

Rose Marie Price, 78, formerly of 324 W. Fourth Street, died Saturday (Oct. 30, 2004) in Guy and Mary Felt Manor, following a lengthy illness.

Born Aug. 3, 1926 in Lansing, Michigan, she was the daughter of Henry E. and Josephine Macke Debo. On April 5, 1952, in Akron, N.Y., she married Carl Ervin Price, who survives.

Mrs. Price had been a resident of Emporium for 12 years. She was a graduate of Akron, N.Y. High School and of Mercy School of Nursing, Buffalo, N.Y. She was employed as a nurse for over 50 years.

Surviving are a daughter, Rosemarie Horn of Amarillo, Texas; a sister, Mary Ann Slazak of Akron, N.Y.; and a brother, Joseph G. debo of Tonawanda, N.Y.

She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, and a sister.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Friday (Nov. 5, 2004) from St. Mark's Church, where the Rev. Paul Siebert, pastor, was celebrant. Burial was in St. Mark's Cemetery.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Edward M. Barnett Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
