Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Roy F. Malkin

Roy F. Malkin, 80, of 596 W. Maple St., Hazleton, died Tuesday in the Hazleton General Hospital. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Snellman) Malkin. They were married for 57 years.

He was employed as a meter inspector for the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company for over 40 years before retiring in 1979.

Born in Lansford, he was a son of the late James and Jeanette (Forgay) Malkin.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Hazleton, and a 50-year member of the Lansford Fire Company.

Malkin was a volunteer for many years and served on the Board of Directors of Meals on Wheels in Hazleton.

A 1935 graduate of the former Lansford High School, he was an Air Force veteran of World War II.

For over 30 years, he was a singer and musician in various big bands and dance bands, mostly in the Panther Valley Area.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a son, James A. of Drifton; and a grandson.

The Rosenstock Funeral Home, 229 W. Broad St., Hazleton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Michael Potzgo

Michael Potzgo, 88, of 410 Kline St., Weatherly, died Tuesday evening in the Hazleton General Hospital. He was the husband of Martha (Wassel) Potzgo. They were married for 63 years.

Before retiring, he was a miner for the Jeddo-Highland Coal Company. He was also a bus driver for the former Carbon County Home at Laurytown.

Born in Foundryville, he was a son of the late John and Anna (Charnigo) Potzgo.

He was a member of St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, Freeland, and the United Mine Workers, and was a former member of the L&L Fire Company, Weatherly R.2.

Surviving in addition to his widow are two daughters, Mary Jane, wife of Edward Smith of Wallingford, and Marion, wife of David Smith of Weatherly; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, George Potzgo and John Kostick; and three sisters, Anna Megash, Mary Merva and Helen Maslo.

Delores Gernet

Dolores Marie Gernet, 52, of 527 Lincoln St., Tamaqua, died Friday in St. Joseph Medical Center, Hazleton. She was the wife of Richard C. Gernert Sr.

Born in Atlantic City, she was a daughter of Edward Yarnell and Ruth (Spotts) Yarnell.

Survivors include two sons: J. Yarnell of Tamaqua, and Richard C. Gernert Jr. of Shenandoah; one daughter, Denise M., wife of Terry Fetter of Tamaqua; four brothers, LeRoy Yarnell of San Antonio, Texas, Robert of Canada, George of Palialta, Pa., and William of Harrisburg; and 10 grandchildren.

The E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, Tamaqua is in charge of arrangements.

Norman E. Shinn Jr.

Norman E. Shinn Jr., 69, of Jim Thorpe, died Friday Sept. 12, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. He was the husband of Dorothea Moller Shinn.

Shinn lived in the Masonville section of Mt. Laurel, N.J., 47 years before moving to Jim Thorpe five years ago. He worked for Moorestown Township as maintenance supervisor for 12 years before retiring in 1992.

He was a former chief and president of Masonville Fire Co. and a life member and an exempt member. He was also former secretary of Mt. Laurel Firemens Relief Association and a charter member of both Masonville Emergency Squad and Mt. Laurel Exempt Firemens Association.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a son and daughter, Jeffrey N. Shinn, Jim Thorpe, and Cynthia M. Hummer, Orlando, Fla.; three grandchildren, Stephanie Hummer, Beth Hummer and Tracey Shinn Davis; and two great-grandchildren, Ashleigh and Nicholas Davis.

Thomas A. Fedorcha

Thomas A. Fedorcha, 73, of 528 Lehigh St., Jim Thorpe, died thursday evening at Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. He was the husband of Eleanor W. (Kline) Fedorcha.

Born in Nesquehoning, he was a son of the late Michael and Mary (Hanusick) Fedorcha.

He worked for the Jim Thorpe Borough as a Superintendant of the Water Authority for more than 30 years.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Jim Thorpe. He also belonged to the Fairview Hose Co., and the Dlon, Jones, Martino Post 304 American Legion.

He served with the U.S. ARmy in World War II in the 224th Air Borne Paratroopers Division in Central Europe, Rhineland and was awarded the American Service Medal-European-African Middle Easter World War II Victory Medal.

Surviving with his widow is a brother Stephen of Blakeslee.

He was preceded in death by five brothers; John, Michael, Joseph, Andrew and Paul, and one sister, Mary.

The Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, Inc., 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, is in charge of arrangements.

Sheehan triplets

Newborn triplet daughters of Joseph M. and Joann (Zuber) Sheehan, formerly Jim Thorpe and Summit Hill residents, currently of Pennsburg, died Sept. 11 and 12 in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown.

Abigail Elizabeth and Rebecca Shirley Sheehan died Sept. 11 and Madaline D. Sheehan passed away Sept. 12.

Surviving with their parents are the maternal grandparents, Joseph P. and Delores Zuber of Summit Hill, and paternal grandfather, John W. Sheehan of Jim Thorpe. Also several aunts and uncles.

Graveside services were held Tuesday at the Evergreen Cemetery, with Father Thomas A. Derzack officiating. The Edward F. Melber Funeral Home of Jim Thorpe handled local arrangements.

Margaret L. Fritz

Margaret L. (Hoppes) Fritz, 81, formerly of Andreas R. 1, died Friday evening in the Gnaden Huetten Hospital, Lehighton, after being transfered from the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the widow of John G. Fritz Jr., who died in 1996.

She worked as a waitress for the Spring Dell Restaurant in New Mahoning for many years, retiring in 1978. She and her late husband also worked as self-employed produce growers in West Penn Township, retiring in 1994.

Born in Mahoning Township, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Minnie (Miller) Hoppes.

She was a member of the UCC Congregation and a member of the church Women's Guild of St. Peters Lutheran and UCC Church, Tamaqua R.3.

Surviving is a daughter, Jewel L., wife of William D. Zellner, and a son, Berdell L. Fritz, both of R.1, Andreas. Also three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter and her step-father, Leon Arner.

Mrs. Marie E. Kline

Mrs. Marie E. Kline, 82, of Brodheadsville, formerly of Harrisburg, died Friday in the Brookmont Acres Health Care Center, Effort. She was the widow of Alan E. Kline.

Born in Appenzell, Monroe County, she was a daughter of the late Franklin and Alice (Altemose) Mills.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Harrisburg.

The deceased was a graduate of Pennsylvania State University.

Surviving is a nephew.

The Kresge Funeral Home, Rt. 209, Brodheadsville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Arthur A. Hawk

Arthur A. Hawk, 75, of 1050 57 Drive, Palmerton, died Saturday in the Palmerton Hospital. He was the husband of Naomi Z. (Smale) Hawk. They observed their 52nd wedding anniversary last December.

He was a repairman for the former New Jersey Zinc Company, Palmerton, for more than 37 years before retiring in 1979.

Born in Saylorsburg, he was a son of the late Alfred F. and Myrtle (Whalen) Hawk.

He was a member of Jerusalem Lutheran Church, Trachsville.

Hawk was an Army veteran of World War II, having served in Italy.

Surviving in addition to his widow are two daughters, Dolores Rhyder of Palmerton and Charlotte, wife of Wilbert Kleintop Jr. of Saylorsburg; a son Delbert of Palmerton; three sisters, Mrs. Beatrice Berger of Palmerton, Mrs. Hilda Kuehner of Kunkletown and Emma, wife of Earnest Smale of Lehighton; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The Thomas K. Thomas Funeral Home, 145 Delaware Ave., Palmerton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Richard C. Serfass

Richard C. Serfass, 68, of 121 N. Ninth St., Allentown, died Friday in his home.

He was a chef for Ser-Va-Mation Catering, Allentown, until retiring.

Born in Lehighton, he was a son of the late Elmer E. and Sarah E. (Parry) Serfass.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Iva M. Snyder of Lehighton and Mrs. Bertha Kintz of Kunkletown R.3; and nieces and nephews.

The Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, Fourth and Iron streets, Lehighton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Mary G. Tufo

Mrs. Mary G. Tufo, 90, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Tamaqua, died Saturday in the Woodside Hospice, Pinellas Park, Fla. She was the widow of Pompilio Tufo, who died in 1954.

Prior to retiring, she was the owner of The Coffee Cup on Berwick Street in Tamaqua.

Born in Italy, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Locasale.

She was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving are three daughters, Rose, wife of Nathan Finocchio of Phillipsburg, Pa., Mrs. Mary Coggiano of Tamaqua and Shirley, wife of Norwood Hartline of Slatington; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son Robert and a daughter, Yolanda Wallace.

The Roche Funeral Home, 237 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of the arrangements.

Vincent Zelonis Jr.

Vincent Zelonis Jr., 39, of 723 E. Pine St., Mahanoy City, died Saturday afternoon shortly after arrival at the Pottsville Hospital. He was the husband of Donna (Demnitski) Zelonis.

He was employed by the Eagle Rock Ski Resort.

Born in Mahanoy City, he was a son of Vincent Zelonis and the late Mary (Duncavage) Zelonis, and had lived in the Mahanoy City area for most of his life.

The deceased was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mahanoy City.

He was a Marine Corps veteran.

A 1976 graduate of Mahanoy Area High School, he received an associate degree in electronics from Pennsylvania State University.

Surviving in addition to his widow and father are a son Brad, at home; three sisters, Violet in Brazil, Josephine Balogach of Summit Hill and Mary Latrell of Central City, Neb.; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mrs. Doris L. Walck

Mrs. Doris L. Walck, 60, of 74 Beaver St., Lehighton, died Sunday in her home. She was the widow of Lamont L. Walck, who died last October.

Born in Mahoning Township, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Beatrice (Moulthrop) Zellner.

She was a member of the Packerton Old-Timers Club.

Mrs. Walck was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving are two sons, Walter W. and Rodney R., and two daughters, Cynthia, wife of Bruce Freyman, and Doris Ahner, all of Lehighton; five sisters, Nancy, wife of Grover Moyer Jr., Beverly, wife of William Wentz Jr., Joan, wife of Eugene Armbruster, and Kathryn Hernandez, all of Lehighton, and Marie Bush of Palmerton; and six grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a brother Walter.

The Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, Fourth and Iron streets, Lehighton, is in charge of the arrangements.
