Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Mrs. Anna Feathers-Walton

Mrs. Anna Feathers-Walton, 93, of Tamaqua, died Saturday in the Hometown Nursing and Convalescent Center, Hometown. She was the widow of Robert Feathers and Robert Walton.

Prior to retiring, she was a licensed practical nurse.

Born in Lansford, she was a daughter of the late Bert and Florence (Cook) Maloy.

She was a member of Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church, Tamaqua.

Surviving are a daughter, Betty Hoagland of Effort; two stepn son, Robert and Frank Walton; and two stepdaughters, Ruth Walton and Gale Gagliardi; a granddaughter and a great-grandchild.

The Lamar Christ Funeral Home, Hometown, is in charge of the arrangements.

Orville E. Breiner

Orville E. "Butch" Breiner, 54, of Hauto, died Sunday in his home. He was the husband of Barbara A. (Kollar) Breiner. They celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary last Sunday.

He was a professional foster parent working at his residence for many years. He and his wife were foster parents to over 130 children over the past 26 years.

Born in Summit Hill, he was a son of Helen (Heffelfinger) Breiner of Coaldale, and the late Carl Breiner.

A graduate of the former Summit Hill High School in 1961, he was a member of the Calvary Episcopal Church, Tamaqua.

He served with the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis and also in the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Panther Valley F&AM Lodge No. 677, and the Order of the Eastern Star No. 123, both of Lansford.

Surviving with his mother and wife are three sons, Orville (Squegy) Jr. and Brian, both of Hauto, and Todd of Lebanon; and a brother, Ronald of Lansford.

He was also preceded in death by a son, William Andrew; and a brother, Larry.

The David J. Stianche Funeral Home, 123 Center St., Jim Thorpe, is in charge of arrangements.

George R. Hahn

George R. Hahn, 87, of 250 E. Mauch Chunk St., Tamaqua, died Sunday in his residence.

Prior to retiring, he had been a self-employed radio and TV repairman.

Born in Tamaqua, he was a son of the late George A. and Sarah (Metzger) Hahn.

Hahn was a member of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tamaqua, and a life member of the Tamaqua Citizens Fire Company.

The last immediate member of his family, he is survived by a nephew, Jack Ditchey, with whom he resided.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Ditchey, who died in 1989.

The Jon M. Zizelmann Funeral Home, 500 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Anna Puskar

Mrs. Anna Puskar, 81, of 519 E. Patterson St., Lansford, died Tuesday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. She was the widow of John Puskar.

She was an examiner for the former Kiddie Kloes, Lansford, for many years before retiring in 1978.

Born in Lansford, she was a daughter of the late Paul and Julia (Dzulo) Zwiesdak.

She was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, Lansford.

Surviving are a son, Robert J. of Paradise Valley, Ariz.; two daughters, Dorothy, wife of Wayne Lalor of Macungie, and Diane, wife of Bernard Takacs of Northampton; and two grandchildren.

Also surviving are five sisters and two brothers.

She was preceded in death by one brother.

The Skrabak-Parambo Funeral Home, 210 E. Bertsch St., Lansford, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Richard W. Kies

Mrs. Velvyn P. Kies, 84, of Allentown, died Tuesday in her home. She was the wife of Richard W. Kies. They observed their 62nd wedding anniversary in June.

She was a retail clerk for the former H. Leh & Co., Allentown, for 20 years before retiring.

Born in Barnesville, she was a daughter of the late Allen and Pearl (Schaller) Purnell.

She was a member of Calvary Moravian Church, Allentown, where she was a former Sunday school teacher, and also had taught at the former Lake Minisink Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Donald R. of Whitehall Township and Robert B. of Deer Lake, Schuylkill County; a sister, Mrs. Eleanor McDonald of Lansford; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Wilson "Bud" Taylor

Wilson "Bud" Taylor, 78, of 378 Lincoln St., Phillipsburg, N.J., formerly of Hillsborough, N.J., died Wednesday in the Warren Hospital in New Jersey. He was the husband of Loretta (Abel) Taylor. They observed their 58th wedding anniversary in May.

He was a passenger brakeman for the former Central Railroad of New Jersey for 38 years.

Born in Phillipsburg, he was a son of the late Daniel C. and Beulah (Sine) Taylor.

He was a member of St. Philip and St. James Catholic Church, Phillipsburg.

Taylor was an Army veteran of World War II.

He was a life member and former assistant chief of the Hillsborough Fire Company; an organizer of the Pop Warner Football League in Hillsborough; former president of the Hillsborough Little League; and a member of the Elks Lodge No. 395, Phillipsburg.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a son, Robert T. of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two brothers, Daniel Jr. of Long Beach Island, N.J., and Donald in North Carolina; a sister, Yvonne Lorah of Walnutport; five grandchildren, a great-grandchild and three step-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Joan Marie Johnson, who died i 1987.

Mrs. Leah A. Danner

Mrs. Leah A. Danner, 81, of 249 Lehigh Ave., Palmerton, died Wednesday in the Mahoning Valley Convalescent Center, Mahoning Township. She was the widow of Robert F. Danner.

She was a sales clerk for the former Natalie's Fashions, Palmerton, for 15 years before retiring in 1977, and previously had been a custodian in the Palmerton School District for several years.

Born in Franklin Township, she was a daughter of the late Edward E. and Lulu (Shoebert) Boyer.

She was a member of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, Palmerton.

Surviving are two sons, Robert E. of Temecula, Calif., and Joseph E. of Palmerton; a daughter, Venetia E., wife of Douglas Archer of Lehighton; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Boyer.

Danner corrections: Mrs. Leah A. Danner, 81, of 249 Lehigh Ave., Palmerton, who died Wednesday in the Mahoning Valley Convalescent Center, Mahoning Township, was a floor girl for Natalie's Fashions, Palmerton, for 15 years before retiring in 1977.
Born in Franklin Township, she was a daughter of the late Edward E. and Lulu (Shobert) Boyer.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Janice Danner.

Joseph J. Gerancher

Joseph J. Gerancher, 79, of Whitehall Township, died Wednesday in the home of his son, Charles J. Sr. of Jim Thorpe, where he recently had been residing.

The deceased was the husband of the late Josephine E. (Woodring) Gerancher.

He was a chief operator at Allentown's waste water treatment plant for 27 years before retiring in 1974.

Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Charles and Mary (Domotor) Gerancher.

He was a member of St. Stephen's Hungarian Catholic Church and the former Hungarian Home Association, both of Allentown.

Surviving in addition to his son are a daughter, Joanne Josephine Kauffman of Emmaus; a brother Louis and four sisters, Mary, wife of Walter Holler, Elizabeth, Ethel and Margaret, all of Allentown; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Lorraine Bevan

Lorraine Bevan, 78, of North Huntington, Westmoreland County, died Thursday in Monsour Medical Center, Jeannette. She was the widow of Thomas Q. Bevan.

Born in Philadelphia, she was a daughter of the late John and Mamie (Durham) Burroughs.

She was a retired registered nurse and had worked at the Monsour Hospital.

She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Jeannette, and belonged to the Monsour Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.

Surviving are two daughters, Lorraine M. Deininger of Seaville, N.J., and Deborah M. Jeroski of North Huntingdon; a sister, Mildred Sheekey, of New Jersey, and a brother, Edward Burroughs of Philadelphia. Also five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Q. Bevan Jr., and a brother, George Burroughs.

The Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, is in charge of local arrangements.

Mrs. Mabel H.Remaley

Mrs. Mabel H. Remaley, 95, formerly of Parryville, died Thursday at the Mahoning Valley Convalescent and Rehabilitation Center, Mahoning Township. She was the widow of Warren Remaley.

Born in Lehighton, she was a daughter of the late Reuben and Hannah (Focht) Moyer.

She was the last of 16 children in her family.

Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy, wife of Henry Borger of Parryville, and Betty, wife of Clarence Haydt of Kunkletown. Also, 14 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Robert.

The T.K. Thomas Funeral Home, Inc., 145 Delaware Ave., Palmerton, is in charge of arrangements.

TIMES NEWS reporter, Shirley Collins, award winning journalist dies at 64

TIMES NEWS staff member Shirley C. Collins, who throughout her news career garnered several news writing awards, died on Saturday morning following a brief illness.

A resident of Brandford Court, Bethlehem, she was 64.

For the past four years, she covered the Palmerton area for this newspaper, having worked out of the Palmerton office.

Previously, she was a reporter and editor for six years for the Bethlehem Globe Times, where she was Accent and Living editor, and also worked for two years at the Easton Express-Times.

Collins was a member and district director of the Pennsylvania Women's Press Association. She also contributed free-lance articles to the Morning Call, Allentown, and helped to launch The Valley Voice, a weekly newspaper in the Hellertown and Lower Saucon areas, in 1988.

She was the recipient of several Keystone Awards presented by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association. She also was honored for her writing by the Pennsylvania Women's Press Association.

As an editor of the Globe-Times, she participated in the selection of the Bethlehem YMCA's Woman of the Year in 1985 and was a judge for the 14th annual Dress-a-Doll, Design-a-Toy Contest sponsored by the Easton National Bank and the former Merchants Bank in 1984.

A graduate of Wyoming Seminary, she received a bachelor's degree from Wellesley College in 1954 and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University in 1982 and in library sciences from the University of Pittsburgh.

Born in Kingston, Luzerne County, she was a daughter of the late John and Elsbeth (Bevan) Coon.

Surviving are two sons, Donald A. Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., and Lawrence J. of San Francisco, Calif.; a daughter, Elsbeth M. of Van Nuys, Calif.; and nine grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a sister, Nancy C. Jones, who died in 1982.

The Snowdon Funeral Home, 140 N. Main St., Shavertown, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Winifred L.Meyers

Mrs. Winifred L. Meyers, 91, formerly of Summit Hill and Coaldale, died Friday in the Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale. She was the widow of John Meyers.

She was employed by the Triangle Shoe Store and Brodie's Men's Shop, both in Philadelphia, for many years before retiring.

Born in Lansford, she was a daughter of the late William and Hattie (Straub) Dick.

She was of the Lutheran faith.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a brother George; and three sisters, Frieda Kleppinger, Ellen Orledge and Alvernia McMichael.

Funeral services were held this morning from the Thomas J. Parambo Funeral Home, 54 W. Fell St., Summit Hill, with the Rev. Wayne Benack officiating, followed by interment in the GAR Cemetery, Summit Hill.
