Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Charles Markosi

Charles Markosi, 85, of 754 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton, died Thursday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown. He was the husband of Dorothy (Petorak) Markosi. They were married 60 years.

He owned and operated the former Markosi Barber Shop, Palmerton, until retiring in 1986.

Born in Palmerton, he was a son of the late George and Julianna (Kupar) Markovsi. He and his parents moved from Palmerton to a village in the Carpathian Mountain region of the Ukraine where he resided until he was 13. He returned alone to the U.S. in 1925 and worked as a barber for most of his life in Palmerton, except for several years when he lived in New York City.

He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Byzantine Greek Catholic Church, Palmerton.

Surviving with his widow is a son, Dr. Charles Jr. of Hamburg; a daughter, Lorraine J., wife of Dr. Charles F. Smith of Allentown; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The Campton Funeral Home Inc., 525 Delaware Ave., Palmerton, is in charge of arrangements.

Franklin L. Coombe

Franklin L. Coombe, 68, of 2016 Fair Blue Lane, Wilmington, Del., died Wednesday evening in St. Francis Hospital, Wilmington. He was the husband of Barbara D. Coombe. They were married 35 years.

He worked as a house painter for almost 40 years, retiring in the early 1980s.

Born in Tamaqua, he was a son of the late Thomas Charles and Lillian (Gilfert) Coombe.

He was a member of Chester Bethel Church in Wilmington, and a former member of Odd Fellows, Arden, Del.

He was also an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Surviving with his widow is a son, David B. Coombe, at home; a daughter, Barbara "Lynn", wife of Jim Wade of MacDaniel Crest, Wilmington; three brothers, Ernest C. of Tamaqua, Arthur G. of Trenton, N.J., and William E. of Reading; a sister, Lillian Kenner of Kentucky.

Services will be private.

Michael Lazar

Michael "Huck" Lazar, 76, of 513 E. Abbott St., Lansford, died Wednesday in the Hometown Nursing Home, Tamaqua R.2. He was the husband of Martha (Pero) Lazar, who died in 1995.

He was a warden at the Jim Thorpe prison for eight years before retiring. Before that, he worked at Creative Industries, Nesquehoning, for seven years and the Lehigh Valley Coal & Navigation Company for 12 years. In the 1940s he worked in Conservation Corps Camps.

Born in Ronco, Fayette County, he was a son of the late Joseph and Mary (Lukac) Lazar.

He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, and its Slovak Catholic Sokol; Am Vets, American Legion and Italian Club, all of Lansford.

Surviving are four sisters, Pauline A. Harvan and Elizabeth Chuma, both of Lansford, Mary S. Papay of Palmerton and Agnes Magala of Anchorage, Alaska; a brother, Joseph of Coaldale; and nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother, Andrew.

The Skrabak-Parambo Funeral Home, 210 E. Bertsch St., Lansfod, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Kleinhagen

Mrs. Mary Kleinhagen, 94, formerly of Newkirk, Tamaqua R.1., died Wednesday in the White Owl Manor, Mahanoy City. She was the wife of the late George Kleinhagen.

She owned the Kleinhagen Grocery Store, Newkirk, for 40 years until retiring.

Born in Shenandoah Heights, she was a daughter of the late John and Mary (Hrbobsky) Sopko.

She was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tamaqua.

Surviving are two sons, George of Chester, Delaware County, and Robert of Newkirk; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son, Russell.

The Jon M. Zizelmann Funeral Home, 500 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

Charles F. Eames

Charles F. Eames, 81, of 4 Scureman St., Wilkes-Barre, and formerly of Tamaqua, died Thursday in his residence.

Prior to retiring in 1985, he had been employed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvaia, Department of Education. He also co-owned and operated the former Eames' Bakery, Tamaqua.

Born in Tamaqua, he was a son of the late James T. and Marguerite (Christ) Eames.

Eames was a member of St. Jerome Catholic Church, Tamaqua.

He graduated from Tamaqua High School in 1934, Swathmore College in 1938 and the American Institute of Baking. He was a member of the Tamaqua B.P.O. Elks, Lodge 592; Wyoming Valley Ski Club; and Parents Without Partners, Wilkes-Barre.

He is survived by a son, Jonathon C. of Wilkes-Barrre; a daughter, Kimberly, wife of Charles Ultsh of Kingston; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Fulmer of Tamaqua and Mrs. Scott (Barbara Ann) Price of Washington, D.C.; and three grandchildren.

He was also preceeded in death by a daughter, Heather R.; and a brother, William J.

The E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of arrangements.

John J. Gabos

John J. Gabos, 59, of 247 Railroad Drive, Weatherly, died Tuesday evening at his home. He was the husband of Bernadette (Fetchko) Gabos.

He was the owner of Gabos Electric.

Born in Hazleton, he was a son of Emily (Solensky) Gabos of Hazleton, and the late John B. Gabos.

He was a past president of the Lehigh Valley Chapter of Association Builders and Contractors.

He was an Army veteran.

Surviving with his mother and wife are two sons, John M., at home, and Eric of Sugarloaf; two daughters, Susan and Amy, wife of Russell Blew, both of Beaver Meadows; a brother, Thomas of Hazleton; six grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Kasper Survivor

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Kasper, of Newkirk, Tamaqua R.1, who died on June 14, is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Anna Dietrich. Her name was inadvertently omitted in Monday's obituary.

Judy Ann Solt

Judy Ann Solt, 64, of 21 Third Ave., Lehighton, died late Wednesday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital Center, Salisbury Township. She was the wife of Roger Solt. They were married 44 years in May.

Born in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Canada, she was a daughter of Ralph Fowler of Quebec, Canada, and Yvonne (Searcy) Fowler of Lehighton.

She was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Lehighton.

Surviving with her husband and parents is a son, Roger Jr. of Tamaqua; three daughters, Pamela, wife of Michael Hughes of Philadelphia, Renee, wife of John Vehafric of Lehighton, and Gale, at home;a bropther, Ronald Fowler of Kennebunkport, Maine; a sister, Delma, wife of Fred Degler of Brodheadsville, and six grandchildren.

The Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, Fourth and Iron Streets, Lehighton, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Mary Kleinhagen

Mrs. Mary Kleinhagen, 94, formerly of Newkirk, Tamaqua R1, died Wednesday evening in the White Owl Manor, Mahanoy City. She was the widow of George Kleinhagen.

Ernest J. Poshefko

Ernest J. Poshefko, 77, of 339 W. Bertsch St., Lansford, died Wednesday in Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale. He was the husband of Victoria (Stricek) Poshefko. They were married 54 years on Dec. 26.

He retired from Mack Trucks in Allentown. Prior to that, he worked for the former Greenwood Stripping Company and the former Edison Coal Company.

Born in Nesquehoning, he was a son of the late Andrew and Mary (Asmondja) Poshefko.

He was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, the First Slovak Catholic Union of the church and the Lansford American Legion, Post 123.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the 85th Infantry as a Tech Sergeant in Africa and Italy.

Surviving with his widow is a son, Richard of Emmaus; a daughter, Rita Jane, wife of Ronald Mantz of Hauto Valley Estates, Nesquehoning; two sisters, theresa Matsick of Nesquehoning; margaret Feddock of Weatherwood, Weatherly; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a brother William and a sister, Irene Devan.

The Al M. Sverchek Funeral Home, Powell and East Bertsch Streets, Lansford, is in charge of arrangements.

Mike Lazur

Michael "Huck" Lazar, of 513 E. Abbott St., Lansford, died Wednesday in the Hometown Nursing Home, Tamaqua R.2. He was the husband of the late Martha P. Lazar who died in 1995.

Joseph V. Postupack

Joseph V. Postupack, 77, of Tresckow, died Tuesday in the Hazleton-St. Joseph Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Mary Postupack, who died in 1988.

He worked for the family businesses, Postie's Soft Drinks and Postie's Grove, before retiring. In 1950, he became a sales representative for Joseph E. Seagram and Company.

Born in McAdoo, he was a son of the late Constantine and Helen (Baronchak) Postupack.

He was a 1938 graduate of the former McAdoo High School, where he was a three-letter athlete and president of the senior class. In 1942, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, Ind., where he played varsity football.

After graduation, he entered the Navy and earned the rank of lieutenant junior grade and commanded a landing craft tanker in the South Pacific during World War II.

He was a member of St. Mary Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6708, both of McAdoo; and for many years was a trustee of the SS. Cyril and Methodius Cemetery, Weatherly.

Surviving are three daughters, Sandra, wife of Daniel Luongo, and Mary Frances Postupack, both of Stroudsburg, and Donna, wife of Dominick Piccione of Drums; two brothers, Harry and Alex, both of Tamaqua; three sisters, Catherine I. Postupack and Helen Lauricella, both of Tamaqua, and Mary Lou Postupack of Hazleton; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by five brothers, George, Anthony, Emil, Methody and Jacob; two sisters, Martha Postupack and Olga Bittler.

The Stanley E. Anilosky and Son Funeral Home, 145 S. Kennedy Drive, McAdoo, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Frances A. Dunn

Mrs. Frances A. Dunn, 84, of Clearwater, Fla., formerly of Palmerton, died Friday in the Clearwater Community Hospital. She was the widow of Richard Dunn.

Born in Shack, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Robert Ballard and Hattie (Smith) Walker, and had resided in Palmerton before moving to Florida in 1991.

She was a 56-year member of the John Luther Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Palmerton.

The deceased belonged to the First United Methodist Church, Tarpon Springs, and was a former member of the Trinity Evangelical Church, Palmerton.

Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Hunter of Louisville, Ky.; a son Bob of South Bend, Ind.; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held today in Tarpon Springs, Fla.

Joseph Nierer Jr.

Joseph Nierer Jr., 81, of 4191 Cashew Drive, Walnutport, died Tuesday in his home. He was the husband of Winifred A.J. (Gable) Nierer.

He was a maintenance man at the former Dieters Foundry, Cherryville, for 43 years before retiring in 1977.

Born in Coplay, he was a son of the late Joseph Sr. and Rose (Neubaurer) Nierer.

He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Indianland, Cherryville.

Surviving with his wife are two sons, Joseph F. of Walnutport, and John J. of Delps; a daughter, Jeanette, wife of Richard Beltz of Walnutport; brother Edward of Slatington; six sisters, Mrs. Robert (Rose) Henke of St. Louis, Mo., Mrs. Henry (Anna) Flowers and Mrs. Margaret Parry, both of Walnutport, Mrs. Helen Williams of Virginia Beach, Va., Caroline of Allentown and Mrs. Joseph (Josephine) Gasper of Bethlehem; and six grandchildren.
