Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Edith Blauvelt

Edith (Irene) Blauvelt, 87, of Coudersport died Tuesday (Feb. 21, 2006) at the home of her daughter, Teresa Genaux, in Emporium after a short illness.

Born on Dec. 16, 1918 in Harrison County, Iowa, she was the daughter of Albert Boehler, Sr., and Tracy Berlier Boehler. On June 9, 1939 in Coudersport, she married Ronald D. Blauvelt, who survives.

Mrs. Blauvelt had lived in Iowa where she attended school in Missouri Valley. She moved to Coudersport in 1938 where she lived until moving to her daughter’s home in Emporium in 2005. Mrs. Blauvelt was a homemaker, avid reader and an excellent seamstress.

She was a member of the Jolly Homemakers, PALMA and served on the Eulalia Township election board. She was a crafter and was very successful in making handmade jewelry of natural flowers, mosses and keepsake items.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her daughter, Teresa (John) Genaux of Emporium; eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; her daughter-in-law, Sandra Blauvelt of Redgecrest, CA; her sister, Marilyn Gravitt of Seattle, WA; her sister-in-law, Frieda (Clarence) Baker of Murfreesboro, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Ronald A. Blauvelt, who died in 1990, and two brothers, Everette Boehler and Albert Boehler, Jr.

Friends may call on Saturday at the Fickinger Funeral Home, Coudersport from noon until 2 p.m. at which time funeral services will be held with the Rev. Dwight Simpson of the Faith Baptist Church in Emporium, officiating. Burial will be in Homer Cemetery in Inez.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to Community Nurses Inc. Hospice Program, 313 South Chestnut Street, Emporium, Pa 15834.

Timothy Austin

Timothy W. Austin, 43, of 158 Sizerville Road, Emporium died Thursday (Feb. 16, 2006) at Elk Regional Medical Center, St. Marys from injuries sustained in a fire.

Born August 30, 1962 in St. Marys, he was the son of William and JoAnn Nellis Austin.

Mr. Austin was a lifelong Emporium area resident and attended Cameron County High School. He had been employed as a laborer at Elcam Inc.

Survivng in addition to his parents are a son, Justin Austin of Emporium; two daughters, Jessica Austin and Anita Cressley, both of Emporium;, seven sisters, Cindy Genevro, Sue Austin, Jennifer Austin, Julie Smoker, Heather Austin, Ashley Austin, all of Emporium, Lisa Augustine, from Pittsburgh; two brothers, Scott Austin and Michael Austin, both from Emporium; and three grandchildren.

A private visitation was held Saturday (Feb. 18) at the Edward M. Barnett Funeral Home, PC where funeral and committal services were held with the Rev. Gary Atkinson, pastor of the First United Methodist Church officiating.

Burial was held in Newton Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Virginia Saltsman

Virginia K. (Jean) Saltsman, 63 of 54 Hammondsport, N.Y. died Thursday (April 6, 2006) at the home of her daughter.

She was born in Corning, N.Y., the daughter of Max and Felicia Viselli Patterson. She was predeceased by her husband Richard Saltsman Sr, on Jan. 11, 1991. Mrs. Saltsman was a member of St. Gabriels Catholic Church in Hammondsport and had worked at Gold Seal Winery for many years.

Surviving are her daughters Brenda (Don) Personius of Hammondsport and Kelly (Rich) Bussmann of Hammondsport; son Richard (Karen) Saltsman Jr. of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; mother Felicia Cummings of Hammondsport; sisters Martha (John) Berry of Emlenton; Sandra Richards of Emporium; brothers Gene (Doreen) Patterson of Bath, Dean Patterson of Coopers Plains, Emery Cummings of Hammondsport and Thomas Cummings of Binghamton; grandchildren, great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her father Max Patterson in 1985 and her brother Max Patterson Jr. in 2006.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sunday (April 9, 2006) at St. Gabriels Catholic Church in Hammondsport. Burial was in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Hammondsport.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1400 Winton Road North Rochester, NY 14609-5896 or to St. Gabriels Catholic Church.

Max Patterson Jr.

Word has been received that Max A. Patterson Jr. died Jan. 12, 2006.

Born March 23, 1941 in Corning N.Y. he was the son of Max Sr. and Felicia Riselli Patterson.

Mr. Patterson is survived by his wife of 38 years, Kathleen; mother, Felicia Cummings; children, Michael (Jennifer) Patterson, Maureen (Tim) Johnson, Mark (Christy) Patterson, Lisa (Steve) Vail; sisters, Jean Saltsman of Hammondsport, N.Y., Martha (John) Berry Jr. of Emlenton, Sandy Richards of Emporium, brothers, Emery Cummings of Binghamton, Gene (Doreen) Patterson Bath N.Y. and Dean Patterson of Coopers Plains; 9 grandsons, and many nieces and nephews.

Max was a retired USN Chief, (1983) and a retired employee of USAA Insurence Company (1999). He was a member of the Elks Lodge 708 and the American Legion Harrison, Lee Post 283 of Livonia Center.

A funeral mass was held at St. Leo's Church. Interment was Holy Sepulcher Cemetery.

In Lieu of flowers, contributions maybe made to Pluta Cancer Center, 125 Red Creek Dr. Rochester N.Y. 14618 or H. Lee Moffit Cancer Center, 12902 Magnolia Drive, Tampa, Flordia 33612.

Ralph Grovanz

Ralph A. Grovanz Sr., 89, of 3338 Rich Valley Road, died Friday (April 7, 2006) in Elk Regional Health Center, following a brief illness.

Born May 30, 1916, in Emporium, he was the son of Peter and Rose Demoro Grovanz. On Aug. 21, 1948, in St. Joseph R.C. Church, Force, he married Jennie Marie BonAnno, who survives.

Mr. Grovanz was a lifelong resident of Cameron County and attended the Rich Valley School. He was employed by GTE Sylvania in Quality Control for 30 years. He served with the U.S. Army from April 16, 1941 to Sept. 24, 1945.

He was a 3rd Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 990, a member of the Cameron County Memorial Detail, Miller-Raffaele VFW Post 6221, Olkosky-Jessop American Legion Post #194, Loyal Order of Moose #368, Emporium Country Club, Bucktail Rod and Gun Club, and the Sinnemahoning Sportsmen's Club. He was an usher at St. Mark's Church for many years, and was an avid outdoorsman and gardener.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are four daughters, Rosemary Grovanz, Joann (Dale) Miller, Rita (Art) May, all of Emporium, and Bonnie (Andy) Housler of St. Marys; one son, Ralph A. (Jody) Grovanz Jr. of Emporium; 20 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; three sisters, Christine Grovanz of Emporium, Rose Gentile of Russelton, and Josephinc Haight of Ashtabula, Ohio; two brothers, Joseph Grovanz and Peter Grovanz, both of Emporium.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Jennie Yore, Katie Carnovale, Lottye Carlson, and Theresa Young; one brother James Grovanz; and one grandson, Giovanni Housler.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mark's Church, where the Rev. Paul Siebert, pastor, was celebrant. Burial was in St. Mark's Cemetery. Full military honors were accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.

Memorials may be made to Cameron County Memorial Detail.

Thomas Moate

Thomas A Moate, 60, formerly of Prospect Park, died Friday (April 7, 2006) in Christ the King Manor, DuBois, following a lengthly illness.

Born Jan. 1, 1946, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was a son of Albert and Betty Wishman Moate.

He was a lifelong resident of Cameron County and graduated from Cameron County High School. He served two tours in Vietnam with the U.S. Navy from 1964 to 1968. Mr. Moate was a heavy equipment operator for DCNR for more than 30 years.

He was a member of VFW Post 6221, Loyal Order of Moose #368, Knights of Columbus Council 990, Cameron County Memorial Detail, and the Emporium Fire Department.

Surviving are his mother, Betty Moate of Emporium; two daughters, April Moate of Hoover, Alabama and Wendy Moate of Pittsburgh; four sisters, Susan Swasnick of Emporium, Tina Mix of Weedville, Barbara McKimm and Virginia "Peachie" Singer, both of Emporium; and one brother, Gerald Moate of Emporium.

He was preceded in death by his father and two sisters, Caroline Frutiger and Patricia Moate.

A mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday (April 10, 2006) at St. Mark Catholic Church, where Rev. Paul Siebert, pastor, was celebrant. Burial was in Mix Run Cemetery, Full Military Honors was accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.

Arrangements were handled by the Edward M. Barnett Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Cameron County Memorial Detail.

Vivian Crumrine

Vivian V. Crumrine, 80, formerly of Austin, died Sunday (April 9, 2006) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh.

Born June 17, 1925, in Jamestown, N.Y, she was a daughter of Melburn L. and Vernice R. Knapp Jeffers. On Aug. 18, 1945, in Winchester, Va., she married Guy H. Crumrine, who died Oct. 6, 1996.

She was a longtime resident of Austin and had resided in the Guy and Mary Felt Manor in Emporium since 1999. She was a graduate of Austin High School and was a homemaker.

She was a member of the Austin Free Methodist Church, Odin Grange #1254, Potter County Pomona Grange #54 and the Austin Birthday Club.

Surviving are four sons, Myron Crumrine of DuBois, David Crumrine, Jerry Crumrine and Bruce Crumrine, all of Austin; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Althea Woolerston and Carole Jeffers, both of Austin, Nilah Mericle of Eden, N.C., and June Simmons of Port Alleghany; a brother, Gary Jeffers of Austin; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at Fickenger Funeral Home, Coudersport on Wednesday (April 12, 2006). The Rev. Roger Lacktash, officiated. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery, Austin.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Austin Cancer Society.

Adeline Cassel

Adeline L. Cassel, 82, of 262 Valley View Road, died Saturday (April 8, 2006) in Latrobe Hospital, following a lengthly illness.

Born Oct. 12, 1923 in Emporium, she was a daughter of Joseph and Gabriella Caruso. In 1944, at St. Mark Catholic Church, she married James S. Cassel, who survives.

Mrs. Cassel was a lifelong resident of Cameron County and attended Emporium schools. She was employed by GTE Sylvania for 40 years. She was a member of CD of A, St. Mark Church Choir, and Sylvania Quarter Century Club.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Diana Kopp of Emporium; a son, James S. (Maryann) Cassel Jr. of Boston; five grandchildren, James Cassel III of Boston, Anna Cassel of Maine, Robynne Jordan of Wilcox, Pamelyn Kopp of Johnsonburg, and Adan Kopp of Washington, D.C.; and three great grandchildren, Rebecca, Deryk and Patrick.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Richard; five sisters; and five brothers.

Mrs. Cassel was the last member of her family.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday (April 12, 2006) at St. Mark Catholic Church, where the Rev. Paul Siebert, pastor, was celebrant. Burial was in St. Mark's Cemetery.

Arrangements were handled by the Edward M. Barnett Funeral Home, Emporium.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Kenneth Olivett

Kenneth Eugene Olivett, 83, of Mount Dora, died Tuesday (June 27, 2006).

He was born in Emporium, Pa., and worked at the family-owned grocery market, Sam Olivett and Sons, before moving to Mount Dora in 1972. He then worked at Pantry Pride.

Mr. Olivett was a member of the Community Chapel Church of God in Mount Dora.

He is survived by a wife, Josephine Olivett of Mount Dora; a daughter, Bonnie Colling of Laguna Woods, Calif.; two brothers, Robert and Bernal Olivett, both of Emporium; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Community Chapel Church of God in Mount Dora.

Burton Dempsey

Burton (Bud) Ellsworth Dempsey, 86, of Beaufort, S.C. died Sunday, June 25, 2006, in Bayview Manor.

Mr. Dempsey was born July 22 1919, at Driftwood, PA, a son of the late William (Bert) Berton and Myrtle Freedline Dempsey.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during World War II, had worked at Sylvania in Emporium before moving to Beaufort in the 1950's. He was formerly employed by the Beaufort County maintenance department and had worked at the foreign Wars and Carteret Street United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Dianna Huston of Beaufort; two brothers, Harold Dempsey of Kerrville, TX and Haven (Jack) Dempsey of Crestview, FL; a granddaughter, and two greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Reed Dempsey; a sister, fay Mitchell; and a grandson, Paul B. Huston.

Services were held Wednesday, June 28 at Anderson Funeral Home with burial in Beaufort Memorial Gardens.

Walter Clingan

Walter A. "Stubby" Clingan, 85, of CCC Memorial Highway, died Sunday (July 2, 2006) in his home.

Born Jan. 13, 1921, in Tompson, he was a son of Orrin and Phoebe MacDowell Clingan. On April 5, 1946, in Loyalsock, he married Betty Mae Fries, who survives.

A resident of Cameron County since 1946, Mr. Clingan was a graduate of Uniontown High School and drafting school in Williamsport.

He was employed by GTE Sylvania in Emporium as a draftsman in the Engineering Department, retiring in 1982.

Mr. Clingan coached Little League Baseball for 20 years. He was a member of Sylvania's Quarter Century Club; May Hollow Sportsman's Club in Driftwood; VFW Post 6221 and Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 368, both in Emporium; and Emporium Country Club. He also supported the Disabled American Veterans and was a member of its Commanders Club.

Survivors include three sons, Joseph (Connie) Clingan of Driftwood, Wally (Greenie) Clingan of Emporium and Alan (Theresa) Clingan of North Augusta, S.C.; three daughters, Ginny (Daniel) Gray of Gulf Shores, Ala., and Susan (Ronald) Smith and Sharon (Glenn) Lynn, both of North Augusta, S.C.; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Tara; five brothers, Bradford, George, John, Pete and Orrin "Rock"; and six sisters, Lena, Grace, Oriana, Alberta, Phoebe and Margie.

There was no visitation. Funeral and committal services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday (July 5, 2006) in the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gary Atkinson, pastor, officiating.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Coppersmith Condon Funeral Home, Inc.
