Pennsylvania Obituary and Marriage Records, 1947-2010

Gary Yaras

Gary Yaras, 57, of 967 Cowley Hill Rd., Austin, died at his residence, Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, following a lengthy illness.

He was born Oct. 30, 1948 in Pittsburgh, a son of Anthony Yaras and the late Irene Yaras.

On Dec. 22, 1973 in Austin, he married Linda White Yaras, who survives.

Mr. Yaras graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1967. He served with the US Navy aboard the USS Bon Homme Richards during the Vietnam Era. He had worked at the Pentagon under former Presidents Johnson and Nixon. He worked for the state of over 30 years, much of the time in the State Park Division and was a Forest Supervisor for DCNR. He was a member of the Emporium Moose Lodge #382 and the First Baptist Church in Emporium.

In addition to his wife and father, Anthony Yaras, he is survived by a son, Christopher Yaras (Amy) of Groten, CT; a daughter, Elizabeth Meade of Rural Valley; four grandsons, Calvin and Reese Yaras and Bryan and Nicholas Meade; five sisters, Sandra Carey of Emporium, Cynthia (Thomas) Clark of Emporium, Irene (Donald) Hoffman of Howell, MI, Linda Yaras of Crosby, and Pamela (Rick) Copp of Emporium.

Mr. Yaras was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Peckney Yaras.

Funeral services were held at the Barnett Funeral Home in Emporium on Monday (Sept. 4). The Rev. R. Scott Melott, Pastor of First Baptist Church, officiated. A Military Service will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Elna Mabel Ingersoll Brown

Word has been received that Elna Mabel Ingersoll Brown died Monday, April 24, 2006.

She was born on Sept. 2, 1913 in Conifer, NY, the daughter of Clara Edwards Ingersoll and Andrew Jackson Ingersoll II.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren Jay Brown Sr. and is survived by four children; Warren of St. Clair (Mrs. Peter Bolster) of Alton, NH; Peggy (Mrs. Kenneth Lininger) of Clermont, FL; and Mary (Mrs. Jerry Adams) of Port Huron, MI; eleven grandchildren; 10 greatgrand children; her sister-inlaws, Elizabeth Brown of Emporium and Vilma Ingersoll of Sacramento, CA; her husband's brother and sister-in-law, Armond and Mildred Brown of Buffalo, NY; and many nieces and nephews.

She was employed by the Civil Service Department and Sylvania before retiring from the Cameron County School system of Emporium. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Emporium and during the last 28 years, the First Baptist Church of Winter Garden, FL.

May Crowning Held

St. Marks annual May crowning was held last Sunday during the 10:30 a.m. Liturgy. The First Holy Communicants processes in each holding a flower for the Blessed Mother. the May Queen, Karen Kesterholt, her escort, John Malizia, and the queen's attendants followed in the procession.

After Communion, Karen crowned the Blessed Mother while the song Gentle Women was sung. At the end of Mass, the procession proceeded out side to the small Lady of Fatima

Statue where Jamie Moore and Taylor Gillette (First Communicants) crowned Mary.

Karen is the daughter of Mark and Elaine Kesterholt and her escort was John Paul Malizia, the son of Paul and Beth Malizia. Karen's attendants were Alison Caton, Laura Hockenberry and Casey Sullivan Confirmation students. Jamie Moore was the Junior Queen. She is the daughter of James and Rose Moore. Taylor Gillette was the crown bearer and he is the son of Brian and Lori Gillette.

Nancy L. Strayer
MARCH 20, 1946 - MARCH 12, 2008

Nancy L. (Mummert) Strayer, 61, of R.R. 3, Hollidaysburg, died Wednesday (March 12, 2008).

Mrs. Strayer was born March 20, 1946, in Hollidaysburg, the daughter of James E. and Marie M. (Seymour) Scully. She married John D. Mummert, Sr. July 22, 1967 in Steelton, PA. He died October 11, 1998. She married Ivan Scott Strayer on September 4, 2007 in Hollidaysburg.

She attended St. Michael's Catholic School and graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1963. She worked with her first husband in family owned businesses including an Amoco service station, then a Texaco station, both in Highshire, PA from 1967 to 1994. In 1993, they moved to Driftwood, Cameron County, PA, where they owned and operated The Hunter's and Angler's Pub until 2000. She enjoyed hunting and fishing in Canada.

She is survived by a son, John D. Mummert, Jr., of Middletown, PA; sister, Patricia (Robert) Wees, of Florida; brother, James E. (Suzanne), of Coral Springs, Florida; three grandchildren, Johnnessa, John III, and Trinity Mummert; two nieces, Martha "Marty" and Elizabeth "Betsy" Wees; step-children, Lynn (Chris) Mehrer, of Rozette, WY; Cary (Wade) Shaw, of Martinsburg, PA; Heather (Sam) Malesky, of Summerhill, PA; Jennifer Sell, of Claysburg, PA; Anna Strayer, of Hollidaysburg, PA; and Ivan Scott Strayer, II, of Martinsburg, PA.

Mrs. Strayer is also survived by her first love and last love, Ivan Scott Strayer of Hollidaysburg. They went together in high school and after 37 years without contact were brought back together again in 2000.

Mrs. Strayer was preceded in death by her parents, and sisters, Janet and Beverly.

In keeping with her generous and giving spirit, Mrs. Strayer has donated her body to research for Cancer and Lyme Disease.

At the request of the deceased, there will be no public viewing. A memorial service will be scheduled at the convenience of the family.

Frederick S. Garrett

Frederick S. Garrett, 80, of 55 E. White St., Summit Hill, died Thursday in the Gnaden Huetten Nursing and Convalescent Center, Lehighton.

He worked for Mack Trucks, Inc., Allentown, for 22 years before retiring in 1978.

Born in Summit Hill, he was a son of the late William and Amelia (Storch) Garrett.

He was a member of St. Paul United Church of Christ and American Legion Post 316, both of Summit Hill.

Surviving are two brothers, Franklin, his twin, with whom he resided, and William Chapel in Florida; a niece and five nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two brothers, George and Emerson A. Sr.

The Thomas J. Parambo Funeral Home, 54 W. Fell St., Summit Hill, is in charge of the arrangements.

William Solan

William Solan, 89, of 56 E. Railroad St., Nesquehoning, died Thursday in the Mahoning Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Mahoning Township. He was the husband of the late Christine (Petrock) Solan, who died in 1991.

He was employed by Schrafft's Restaurant, New York City, N.Y., for 43 years before retiring in 1974.

Born in Northampton, he was a son of the late Peter and Irene (Hansser) Solan, and had been living in Nesquehoning since 1974.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Nesquehoning.

Surviving are two daughters, Lorraine McCluskey of Richmond, Va., and Noreen, wife of Donald Carbucci of Scarsdale, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

The Joseph S. Blazosky Funeral Home, 81 E. Catawissa St., Nesquehoning, is in charge of the arrangements.

Irvin F. Schoener Jr.

Irvin F. Schoener Jr., 80, of 10 Cherry St., Tamaqua, died Thursday in the Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale. He was the husband of the late Evelyn M. (Schock) Schoener, who died in 1990.

He was an engineer for the former Reading Railroad before retiring in 1976.

Born in Lehighton, he was a son of the late Irvin F. Sr. and Hilda (Miller) Schoener.

He was a life member of the South Ward Fire Company, Tamaqua.

Schoener was a 1935 graduate of Tamaqua High School.

Surviving are three sons, Robert B. of Golden, Colo., Glenn C. of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Matthew Moyer of Tamaqua; a daughter, Dawn M. Kunkel of Danbury, Conn.; a sister, Mrs. Florence Kleckner of Wernersville, Berks County; and seven grandchildren.

The Jon M. Zizelmann Funeral Home, 500 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of the arrangements.

William J. Fritz

William J. Fritz, 66, of Seipstown, died Thursday in his home.

He was a self-employed woodworker in Seipstown for the past 10 years, and previously was superintendent of maintenance for the Episcopal House, Allentown, for five years until 1983, and a truck driver for the former Modern Transfer, Allentown, from 1961-76.

Born in Tamaqua, he was a son of the late Raymond D. and Hannah (Fegley) Fritz.

He was a member of the Cetronia Fire Company.

Surviving are a companion, Grace A. Wotring, with whom he resided; two daughters, Elizabeth A., wife of Edward G. Faust of Alburtis, and Carol, wife of Eugene Fegley of Allentown; three sons, William of Hazleton, James of Collegeville and Michael of York; a sister, Mrs. Edith Subacz of Hazleton; a stepdaughter, Anna Mae, wife of William Augustine of Allentown; four stepsons, Harry and James Barron, both of Tamaqua, Ronald Barron of Allentown and Donald Barron in Washington State; 31 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

Henry V. Schlegel

Henry V. "Hen" Schlegel, 91, of 244 W. Fifth St., Jim Thorpe, died Wednesday morning in his home. He was the husband of Charlotte (Houser) Schlegel. They observed their 58th wedding anniversary last Nov. 26.

Prior to retiring, he worked in the maintenance of way for the former Central Railroad of New Jersey, working out of Mauch Chunk for 30 years.

Born in East Mauch Chunk, he was a son of the late Edward and Cecelia (Schweibinz) Schlegel.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Jim Thorpe.

Schlegel was a private in the Army during World War II.

He was a life member of the Fairview Hose Company, Jim Thorpe, and the Western Pocono Sportsmen Club.

Surviving in addition to his widow are a brother Edward of Catasauqua; and several nephews and nieces.

He was also preceded in death by five brothers, Leo, John, Arthur and Peter; and three sisters, Mrs. Marie Dorward, Mrs. Cecelia Searfoss and Mrs. Anna Glassic.

The Edward F. Melber Funeral Home, 524 Center St., Jim Thorpe, is in charge of the arrangements.

Martin Ornosky

Martin Ornosky, 69, of Quakertown, died Tuesday in the Pennsburg Manor. He was the husband of the late Ethel Rose (Fecko) Ornosky, who died last year.

He was an environmental engineer for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation for 32 years before retiring in 1983, and later was an environmental consultant for several companies until 1990.

Born in Olyphant, Lackawanna County, he was a son of the late Michael and Anna (Zinsky) Ornosky.

He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, Quakertown, where he was a lector.

Ornosky received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the Pennsylvania State University in 1951.

He was an Army veteran.

The deceased was a former member of the American Industrial Hygiene Association, having served as its Delaware Valley section president in 1976-77.

Surviving are five sons, Paul M. of Proctorville, Ohio, Steve M. of Schwenksville, Montgomery County, John M. of Hamilton Township, N.J., Robert M. of Bethlehem and Daniel M. of Warrington, Bucks County; a brother, Thomas M. of Danielsville; and a grandchild.

Timothy M. Reiss

Timothy M. Reiss, 30, of Bethlehem, died Wednesday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, following an accident on Route 412 in Lower Saucon Township. He was the husband of Liane C. (Miksits) Reiss.

He was a machine operator for Piccari Press, Inc., Warminster, Bucks County.

Born in Quakertown, he was a son of Richard and Helen (Landis) Reiss of Allentown.

Surviving in addition to his widow and parents are two sons, Timothy Jr. of Allentown and Nickolas of Salisbury Township; a daughter, Kate Lee, at home; four brothers, Steven and Barry, both of Pittsburgh, Keith of Easton and Richard Jr. of Pottstown; two sisters, Mrs. Linda June of Bethlehem and Mrs. Tina Wentz of Tamaqua.

Mrs. Louise Pancheri

Mrs. Louise Pancheri, 82, formerly of Lansford, died Tuesday in West Palm Beach, Fla. She was the widow of Dolphie Pancheri.

Born in Lansford, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Angeline Coraggio.

Surviving are a son Frank in Florida; four sisters, Mrs. Marian LaBella of Tamaqua, Mrs. Angeline Griff of Allentown, Mrs. Dora Parsons of Jupiter, Fla., and Mrs. Virginia Longo of Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother Alessio of Allentown; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Jacqueline McGorry; a granddaughter Karen; three brothers, Louis, Patrick and Rocco; and two sisters, Teresa and Jenny.

Frank J. Abate

Frank J. Abate, 72, of 265 W. White Bear Drive, Summit Hill, died Wednesday in Gnaden Huetten Memorial Hospital, Lehighton. He was the husband of Eva Marie (Yursa) Abate who died in 1986.

He was employed as a roofer contractor for several contractors and was last employed by Curtis Bailey.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Joseph and Jenny (Piscopio) Abate.

He was of the Catholic faith.

A United States Army veteran, he served in World War II. He was a member of the Summit Hill American Legion.

Surviving are two brothers, Joseph of Conshohocken; Rocco of Woodbury, N.J.; a sister Emma Loughlin of Philadelphia and several nieces and nephews.

The Skrabak-Parambo Funeral Home, 210 E. Bertsch St., Lansford, is in charge of arrangements.

Phyllis Freeman

Phyllis Freeman, 73, of Anchorage, Alaska, formerly of Cordova, Alaska, died Jan. 9 in her home.

Born in Weatherly, se was a daughter of Helen M. (O'Leary) Freund, who died last year.

The deceased was a licensed Realtor in Anchorage, and previously was a substitute teacher and fishing boat worker, 1977-80. In the 1960s, she managed Conway Personnel, Easton, and worked for Snelling and Snelling, Allentown. She was also an executive secretary for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation from 1953-63.

She received a certificate of completion in real estate from Royse and Associates, Anchorage.

Surviving are three daughters, Brenda Schwarz and Sue Babcock, both of Anchorage, and Barbara Howett of Newtown, Bucks County; and seven grandchildren.
