Harry S. Wernett Sr.

Harry S. Wernett Sr., 77, of the Gnaden Huetten Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Lehighton, died Tuesday in the home. He was the husband of the late Phyllis M. (McFarland) Wernett.

He was a heavy equipment operator for over 20 years for Raymond J. Prezlock Excavating, Somerset, N.J.

Born in Albrightsville, he was a son of the late Paul Sr. and Anna H. (Metzger) Wernett.

He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are three sons, Harry S. Jr. of Lancaster, Mass., Carl L. of Union Beach, N.J., and Donald L. of Sayreville, N.J.; two daughters, Thelma H., wife of David Eickhoff, and Bonita D. Smith, both of Lehighton; three brothers, Paul Jr. of Lehighton, Ralph of Hillside, N.J., and Robert of Northampton; four sisters, Catherine DeHaven of Jim Thorpe, Janet, wife of Robert Smith of Kunkletown, Margaret, wife of Delbert Laury of Lehighton, and Shirley, wife of Charles Leinthall Sr. of Summit Hill; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Michael DeBias

Michael DeBias, of 79 Maple St., Tresckow, Carbon County, died Wednesday in the Hazleton General Hospital. He was the husband of Esther (Fellin) DeBias.

Before retiring, he was employed by the Honey Brook Coal Co.

Born in Tresckow, he was a son of the late Salvadore and Antionette (Mastrul) DeBias, and had lived in the Tresckow area all of his life.

He was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Tresckow.

Surviving in addition to his widow are three daughters, Julie, wife of Joseph Clark, and Marie Lettiere, both of Tresckow, and Melanie, wife of David Brown of Mountaintop; a sister Ann of Hazleton; five grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Russell E. Cain

Mrs. Carolyn M. Cain, 67, of 763 Bristol Road, Churchville, Bucks County, died Wednesday in the Holy Redeemer Hospital, Meadowbrook, Montgomery County. She was the wife of Russell E. Cain. They observed their 45th wedding anniversary on Saturday.

A graduate of Temple University School of Nursing, Philadelphia, she was a registered nurse at Villa Joseph Marie, Flourtown, Montgomery County, before retiring in 1986.

Born in Weissport, she was a daughter of Mrs. Irene L. (Storm) Boyer of Union Hill, Lehighton, and the late Roswell J. Boyer.

The deceased was a member of the Pennsylvanua Nurses Association and the Alumni Association of Temple University.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are a son Rusty of Richboro, Bucks County; two daughters, Wendy S. and Carol L., both of Churchville; a brother, Lynwood J. of El Paso, Tex.; a sister, Cynthia A. Eckman of Lehighton; and a granddaughter.

The Andrew P. Ovsak Funeral Home, Fourth and Iron streets, Lehighton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Jerome W. Benedix Jr.

Jerome W. Benedix Jr., 70, of Allentown, died Wednesday in the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the husband of Dolores R. (Walbert) Benedix. They observed their 24th wedding anniversary on Tuesday.

He was a printer for R & S Printers, Inc., Northampton, for more than 35 years.

Born in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Jerome W. Sr. and Alice G. (Besser) Benedix.

He was a member of Christ United Church of Christ, Walnutport, where he was a former member of the consistory.

Benedix was an Army veteran of World War II and the recipient of the Purple Heart and Silver Star medals, and also served during the Korean Conflict.

Surviving in addition to his widow are five daughters, Debra L., wife of James A. Kubelis of Bethlehem Township, Denise E. Beahm of Bethlehem and Sheryl L., wife of James C. Hunt, Lynn K., wife of Mark Schoenberger, and Karen M., wife of Pete Russo, all of Allentown; a sister, Evelyn G., wife of Lester L. Brown Jr. of Allentown; four stepsons, Charles Weaver Jr. and Steven Weaver, both of Easton, Kevin Weaver of Reading and James Weaver of Allentown; 15 grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Oscar G. Flyte

Oscar G. Flyte, 71, of 528 Bangor Junction Road, Bangor, died Wednesday in the Muhlenberg Hospital Center, Bethlehem. He was the husband of the late Mildred A. (Zeruth) Flyte, who died in 1994.

He was a laborer for Anthony Dally & Sons, Bangor, for four years before retiring in 1976, and previously had been employed by the former Capitol Slate Company, East Bangor, for 25 years.

Born in Palmerton, he was a son of the late Earl and Gertrude (Andrews) Flyte.

Surviving are a sister, Winifred Fritz of Bethlehem; and nieces and nephews.

George R. Henry

George Robert Henry (TSgt. USAF, Ret.), 60, of Fairborn, Ohio, formerly of Coaldale, died June 20 at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Dinah Henry, who died Jan. 28, 1997.

Born in Coaldale, he was a son of the late John and Minnie (Koenig) Henry.

He retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service.

Surviving are three sons, John R. of Columbus, Ohio, Richard DeLong of Vandalia, Ohio, and David DeLong of Deltona, Fla.; eight sisters, Delores Wood in North Carolina and Alberta Hertzig, Betty Conohan, Joan Cassel, Faye Pastucha, Rosella Sharpe, Lucy Breiner and Grace Scott, all of Tamaqua; and nine grandchildren.

Mrs. Gordon Shupp

Mrs. Evelyn Shupp, 74, of Winter Springs, Fla., formerly of Brodheadsville, died Feb. 7 in Orlando, Fla. She was the wife of Gordon Shupp.

Born in Mariatta, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Hilda Cassady.

She was a member of St. Stephen Lutheran Church, Longwood, Fla.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three sons, Barry of Toledo, Ohio, Craig of Hagerstown, Md., and Eric of Quieto, Fla.; a brother Robert of Orange City, Fla., four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

The Kresge Funeral Home, Rt. 209 Brodheadsville, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Betty M. Guy

Mrs. Betty M. Guy, 80, of Box 445, Tamaqua R.4, died Thursday in the Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale. She was the widow of Charles S. Guy.

Prior to retiring, she was a teacher's aid in the Tamaqua Area High School.

Born in Llewellyn, Schuylkill County, she was a daughter of the late George W. and Laura F. (Thomas) Behr.

She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, Tamaqua.

Mrs. Guy was a 1935 graduate of Pottsville High School.

She was a former library aid at Marian Catholic High School, Hometown.

Surviving are three sons, David C. of Tamaqua, Darryl of Barnesville, and Donald W. of Quakertown; a brother Earl of Tamaqua; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Diane Cuvo; two brothers, Guy Hilbert and Charles John Behr; and a sister, Mrs. Mildred Bohler.

The E. Franklin Griffiths Funeral Home, 655 E. Broad St., Tamaqua, is in charge of the arrangements.

Rev. George P. Allen

The Rev. George Paul Allen, 67, of Warren, Mich., formerly of Cherryville, died Tuesday in his home. He was the husband of Marguerite "Margo" (Malko) Allen of Scranton.

A United Church of Christ minister for 40 years, he pastored Peace UCC, Detroit, Mich., before retiring, and previously had served in Buffalo, N.Y., Canton, Ohio, Ringtown, Schuylkill County, and at St. Paul UCC, Indianland, and Zion Stone UCC, Kreidersville.

He was a 1951 graduate of Catawba College, Salisbury, N.C., and received his bachelor of divinity degree from the Lancaster Theological Seminary in 1954.

Born in Scranton, he was a son of Martha Allen of Scranton and the late William Allen.

He was a chaplain in the Air Force Reserve at Willow Grove, McGuire and Delfridge Air Force bases for 26 years, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Rev. Allen was a senior chaplain of the Warren Police Department and regional chairman of the International Police Chaplains Association.

Active in scouting, he received the Silver Beaver and Service to Scouting awards from the Minsi Trails Council, where he was a former chairman.

The deceased was a former president of the Northampton Rotary Club, a volunteer for the Ringtown and Lehigh Township ambulance and fire corps, and was active in the Brotherhood of Masons.

Surviving in addition to his widow and mother are two sons, James of Waldorf, Md., and Daniel of Derry, N.H.; four daughters, Ginger, wife of Bob Hopkins of Sturgis, Mich., Laurel, wife of Steve Devino of Derry, and Georgia, wife of John Wrinkle, and Kristen, both of Warren; a brother Robert in Florida; six foster children and 13 grandchildren.

J. Madison Heppe

J. Madison Heppe, 94, of Bethlehem, formerly of Chalfont, Bucks County, died Tuesday in the Holy Family Manor, Bethlehem. He was the husband of the late Gerda (Avery) Heppe.

He was a custom builder for 43 years, specializing in churches for the last part of his career.

Born in Oreland, Montgomery County, he was a son of the late Herman W. and Elizabeth H. (Johnson) Heppe.

He was a member of the Chalfont Methodist Church, and previously was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent for many years at the Oreland Baptist Church, which was founded by his father.

An amateur musician, he played first trumpet for the Philadelphia Amateur Symphony Orchestra and the Philco Band from 1917-50.

He was a volunteer for the Salvation Army.

Surviving are two sons, Madison A. of Bethlehem and David L. of Brodheadsville; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Alvin R. Snyder

Alvin R. Snyder, 79, of 117 E. Center St., Nesquehoning, died Wednesday in the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre.

A graduate of New York University, he was a special education teacher in the New York City public schools system for 20 years.

Before that, he served in the Army for 21 years, retiring with the rank of first sergeant. He served in Europe during World War II and also served during the Korean Conflict.

Born in Nesquehoning, he was a son of the late William and Mae (Steventon) Snyder.

He was a member of Meeds United Methodist Church, Nesquehoning.

Snyder was a member of American Legion Post 172 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8008, both of Nesquehoning, and the United Federation of Teachers.

Surviving are a brother Walter of Nesquehoning; two sisters, Jeanne, wife of Thomas Zuber, with whom he resided, and Doris, wife of Robert Schmidt of Quakertown; and nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a brother William.

The Bruce A. Nalesnik Funeral Home, 57 W. Center St., Nesquehoning, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Dorothy M. Neff

Mrs. Dorothy M. Neff, 92, formerly of 101 S. First St., Lehighton, died Tuesday in the Gnaden Huetten Nursing and Convalescent Center, Lehighton. She was the widow of Norman H. Neff, who died in 1962.

A member and former chairwoman of the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, she was a machine operator for Scotty's Fashions, Inc., Lehighton, before retiring in 1968 after 18 years of service.

Born in Lehighton, she was a daughter of the late Charles H. and Eliza J. (Snell) Montz.

She was a Democratic committeewoman for the 3rd Ward in Lehighton for many years.

Surviving are a son, Ronald A. of Ashfield; a daughter Charlotte, wife of Millard Thomas of Macungie; 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren.

The Kenneth N. Phifer Funeral Home, Third and Alum streets, Lehighton, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Joseph J. Kane

Mrs. Patricia A. Kane, 62, of 24 W. Holland St., Summit Hill, died Tuesday in the Miners Memorial Medical Center, Coaldale. She was the wife of Joseph J. Kane. They observed their 43rd wedding anniversary in September.

Born in Coaldale, she was a daughter of Anna (Labyak) Smith of Summit Hill and the late Alexander Kastelas.

The deceased was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Summit Hill.

Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are two daughters, Christine Heintzelman and Jo Ann, wife of David Scheitrum, and a sister, Elaine Trudich, all of Summit Hill; and two granddaughters.

The Thomas J. Parambo Funeral Home, 54 W. Fell St., Summit Hill, is in charge of the arrangements.

Joan E. Haag

Joan E. Haag, 68, of 4 Blue Mountain View Mobile Home, Kunkletown, died Monday in the Palmerton Hospital.

She was an estimator for Anderson, Dunston, Helene, Inc., an advertising agency in Edison, N.J., from 1969 until retiring in 1996.

Born in Rahway, N.J., she was a daughter of the late John M. and Hazel N. (Nixon) McDill.

She was of the Presbyterian church.

Surviving are two sons, Ronald R. of Great Neck, Long Island, N.Y., and Richard W. of Kunkletown; a daughter Debra, wife of John Lyzenga of Saylorsburg; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was the last member of her immediate family.
