David L. Miller

August 7, 1998

David L. Miller, Sr., 64, Hamilton Township, died on Friday, August 7, 1998 in Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Norma (Singer) Miller at home.

Born in Stroudsburg, a son of the late Philander and Dorothy Mae (Decker) Miller. He was a life long resident of Monroe County.

He was employed as a bus driver for Pocono Mountain Trails in Blairstown, N.J., for several years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by 3 sons , Henry Lee Miller, David L. Miller Jr., both of Long Pond, and Donald L. Bardonnex of Pikeville, Tenn.; 2 brothers , Woodrow Miller of Tannersville and Henry D. Miller of Harrisburg; 2 sisters , Arvilla Schuller of Saylorsburg and Nora Heller of Mountainhome; 6 grandchildren; 1 great-grandson; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 10, 1998 at 2 p.m. in the Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg with Rev. Raymond Poortstra officiating.

There will be a visitation on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Cremation will take place in Arlington Crematory, White hall. Committal of cremains will take place in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations will be made to the Miller family, c/o Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, 27 Washington Street, East Stroudsburg, PA 18301.

Alexander S. Kulak

Friday, August 7, 1998

Alexander S. Kulak, 37, of Jim Thorpe, died Friday at home. He was the husband of Diana D. Kulak, to whom he had been married since August 27, 1978.

Born on September 23, 1960, in East Stroudsburg, he was the son of the late John and Carolyn (Coco) Kulak and had lived in Carbon County for the past five years, moving there from Tannersville. He had worked in construction for 15 years, where he was a licensed blaster, and as a truck driver for five years.

He was a member of Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church, Tannersville.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons , John Kulak and Jesse Kulak, both at home; two uncles, James Coco of East Stroudsburg and Samuel Coco of Newtown Square; a cousin, RoseAnn Hall; special friends who will be serving as pallbearers, Tim "Herb" Keene of Gouldsboro, James Shoemaker of Philadelphia, Tom Rupert of Lehighton and Arthur Wanamaker of Landsford as well as several other close buddies.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 9:30 a.m. in Our Lady of Victory Roman Catholic Church, Tannersville, with Father Henry E. Zapotocki as celebrant. Burial will follow in Tannersville Union Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 71 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, Pa. 18701.

Julia W. Planken, 84, of East Stroudsburg, died Saturday, August 8, 1998, in Pleasant Valley Manor, Hamilton Township. She was the widow of Anthony Planken.

Born in Stockett, Mont., a daughter of the late Jacob and Wilhelmina (Lahti) Hill. She was a resident of Monroe County since 1992, prior to that of Bronx, N.Y. She was of the Roman Catholic faith.

She is survived by two daughters , Janet Planken of East Stroudsburg and Ann C. Wenrich of Littleton, Colo.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 11, at Lanterman & Allen Funeral Home, , with Msgr. John Bergamo officiating.

There will be a viewing from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, at the funeral home.

Committal will take place in Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg.

Friday, August 7, 1998

Janine L. Welliver, 63, of Robyn Lane, Pocono Lake, died unexpectedly Friday, August 7, at her home.

Born on June 6, 1935, in Rochelle, Ill., she was a daughter of Arline Clark Larson of Rockford, Ill., and the late Harold Larson.

She was a graduate of Rockford, Ill., High School. She earned a B.A. degree from Rockford College and a Master's of Science Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, in New York.

Welliver resided in Pocono Lake since 1994, having formerly lived in White Plains, N.Y., for 35 years.

She had been employed as a high school science teacher in parochial schools of the Archdiocese of Bridgeport, Conn. She retired in 1994.

She was a member of Pocono Lake United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women, a former member of Memorial Methodist Church, White Plains, N.Y.; Pocono Mountain Woman's Club; Phi Beta Kappa honor society; and was a volunteer at the Clymer Library in Pocono Pines. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and reading.

She and her husband, Eugene Welliver, celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary on June 27.

Surviving in addition to her mother and husband are a son and daughter-in-law, David and Tina Welliver of Aiken, S.C.; a son, Scott Welliver of Mohegan Lake, N.Y.; a daughter, Mrs. Bart (Kathryn) Dunn of Pound Ridge, N.Y.; 5 grandchildren; brothers Clark and Dennis Larson, both of Rockford, Ill., and a sister, Rita Gocken, Portland, Ore.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, in Memorial United Methodist Church, 250 Bryant Ave., White Plains, N.Y. Rev. Joe Agne and Rev. Toby Gould, former pastor, will officiate. An additional memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, in Pocono Lake United Methodist Church, Route 940, Pocono Lake, with the Rev. Blaik Westhoff, her pastor, officiating.

Private entombment will be in the columnbarium at Memorial United Methodist Church, White Plains, N.Y.

There will be no viewing.

Born in Philadelphia, he was a resident of Stroudsburg for the past 20 years. Prior to that, he lived in the Philadelphia area.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was of the Catholic faith.

Graveside funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Mabel L. DePaul, 68, of Henryville, died Saturday in the Veterans Hospital, Wilkes-Barre.

Born on Aug. 17, 1929, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Lena Larkin and had lived in Pennsylvania since 1989, moving here from New Jersey.

She served in the U.S. forces during the Korean Conflict.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Dimick, wife of Joseph, of Henryville; three sons , Robert Emord, husband of Peggy, of Lyndhurst, N.J.; John Emord, husband of Karen, of Lakeland, Fla.; and Allen Emord of Tampa, Fla.; daughters -in-law, Donna Tedesco and Danielle Feher; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; a brother, Charles Larkin of Patterson, N.J.; two sisters , Edna Armstrong and Garnet Armstrong, both of Cincinnati, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Frank Emord.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 8:15 p.m. in the William H. Clark Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas Sokolowski officiating. Cremation will follow in the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg.

There will be a viewing on Monday from 7 p.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Aug. 7, 1998

Marie Frances Sackett of Long Pond passed away Friday at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania after an illness. She was the beloved wife of Dante Sackett.

Born in Perth Amboy, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Charlotte Name Lance. She was employed as a teacher in the St. John's and St. Cecilia Parochial Schools in Iselin, N.J., for many years. After moving to the Pocono area, she was active in several of the area's civic organizations. She served as the past president of the Pocono Mountain Women's Club and past president of the Pocono Mountains Lionettes. She was also president of the Girl Scout Council, Raritan Bay Area.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Reich of Jackson, N.J.; two brothers , John and James, both of New Jersey; three sisters , Theresa Rouldolph of Port Charlotte, Fla.; Pauline Gagliano of Florida and Catherine DiFrensa, also of Florida; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Friends may call at the James M. Hook & Co. Funeral Directors on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of the Lake Church in Pocono Lake on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. with the Rev. John Boyle officiating. Interment will be at Pocono Lake Cemetery.

Shirley L. Bozzett, 78, of East Stroudsburg, died Sunday in the Community Medical Center, Scranton. She was the wife of the late William Bozzett, who died in 1983.

Born on September 8, 1919 in Stroudsburg, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Rose (Bellis) Warner and had lived in the area all of her life. She had worked for Valerie Fashions, Ronson and the National Drug Company.

She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, East Stroudsburg.

She is survived by a daughter, Rose Williams of East Stroudsburg; three grandchildren, Aaron Stevens, of Pen Argyl, Tonya Carman, of Port Jervis, N.Y., and Heather Papilion of Cresco; five great grandchildren, Eric Stevens, Sheilah Stevens, Zillon Carman, Doug Carman and John Carman; two sisters , Alberta Singer of Reeders and Leila Warner of Gouldsboro; and many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Prospect Cemetery, East Stroudsburg with Rev. Phyllis M. Hammel officiating.

Florence L. Kindred, 81, of East Stroudsburg died on Monday at Mercy Hospice in Scranton. She was the widow of Lawrence P. Kindred Sr.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rose (James) Aust.

She was a data processor for the Ketchem Drug Co. in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She was of the Catholic faith.

She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Queens, N.Y.

She is survived by two sons , Lawrence P. Jr. of Broad Chanel, Queens, N.Y., and Howard R. Sr. of East Stroudsburg; a brother, Howard James of Queens, N.Y., and one grandson, Howard R. Jr. of East Stroudsburg.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 13, at 11 a.m. from the Thomas Funeral Home, with the Rev. Thomas Bergamo officiating. Burial will take place at Calverton National Cemetery in Calverton, N.Y.

There will be a viewing on Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Rev. Robert P. Oberholtzer Jr., 49, of Pen Argyl, died on Sunday, August 9, in Philadelphia as the result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was the husband of Sandra L. (Shanaman) Oberholtzer, at home.

He was born in Phoenixville, a son of Robert P. and Joyce (Harris) Oberholtzer Sr. of Spring City.

He was a graduate of Albright College in Reading with a degree in history in 1971. He received his master's degree in Divinity from Drew Theological Seminary in Madison, N.Y., in 1974.

He was the Pastor at the Bethesda United Methodist Church in Phoenixville from 1974 to 1977; Pastor of the Olivet United Methodist Church in Coatesville from 1977 to 1982; Pastor at the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant from 1982 to 1989; Pastor at the Prospectville United Methodist Church in Prospectville from 1989 to 1993; Associate Pastor at the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church from 1993 to 1998; and Pastor at the Grace United Methodist Church in Pen Argyl from June 1998 to present.

He was an active Board Member for the Youth for Christ in Monroe County; a member of the Pocono Area Ministerium, the Allies Youth Clergy in the Pocono Mountain area; the Appalachian Service Project with the Youth and Campus Ministry of East Stroudsburg University, the Aldersgate Renewal Ministries. He was also involved with the Church Men's Prayer Breakfast at the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church. He was an avid Civil War Historian.

In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by 2 daughters , Melissa A. (Arthur) Cancro of Mt. Kisco, N.Y., and Joy M. Oberholtzer at home; a sister, Susan L. Oberholtzer of Spring City; a brother, Alan K. Oberholtzer of Downingtown; 2 nieces and 4 nephews.

Memorial funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. in the Grace United Methodist Church, 404 Mountain Avenue, Pen Argyl with the Rev. Theodore McCabe officiating.

Cremation will take place in the H.G. Smith Crematory, Stroudsburg. A memorial visitation will take place on Friday from 9:30 a.m. to the time of the services at the Grace United Methodist Church in Pen Argyl.

At the request of the family, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to either the Grace United Methodist Church, 404 Mountain Avenue, Pen Argyl; the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church Building Fund or the Appalachia Service Project in care of the East Stroudsburg United Methodist Church, 82 South Courtland Street, East Stroudsburg, PA.
