Robert A. Parente, Sr.

Robert A. Parente, Sr., Of Avon, Conn. and Jupiter, Fla., formerly of Cranston, R.I., the son of the late Almerina (Mezzancella) and Vito Parente, died on October 1, 2009, after a long illness at the age of 70.

Robert graduated from Cranston High School in 1957, and the University of Rhode Island in 1961, where he served as class president and was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity. An active member of his community, Robert coached a myriad of sports programs spanning more than 30 years. In Rhode Island, he coached Little League and at one time served as the president of the Edgewood South Elmwood Little League Association. He went on to hold coaching positions in the baseball programs at LaSalle Academy, Brown University and Rhode Island College. Robert most recently resided in Avon, Conn., where he was a member of the Hartford Chamber of Commerce and coached Connie Mack baseball. During the winter months, he spent his time in Jupiter, Fla. where he played and coached senior men's softball and was recently named 'Rookie of the Year'.

He leaves behind his wife of 48 years Jo-An (Plaistek), his sister Carolyn King of Waltham, Mass., his children, Linda and her husband Armin Kososki of Glen Gardner, NJ, Robert Jr. and his wife Susan of Wayland, Mass., Peter and his wife Hope of Canton, Conn., his eight grandchildren, two nephews and a niece.

Calling hours are from 4-8 p.m. on Monday, October 5th at The Prata-Murphy Funeral Home, 78 Providence Street, West Warwick, RI. A funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6th at Saint Paul Church, One Saint Paul Pl., Cranston, RI. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in his name made to McLean Hospice, 75 Great Pond Rd, Simsbury, Conn. 06070-1980

Kayla R. Pine

Kayla R. Pine, 21, of Sycamore Avenue, Warwick, passed away September 1, 2009. She was the beloved daughter of Laura A. (Morais) Meleo of Warwick and Mark W. Pine and step daughter of Ronald A. Meleo.

Kayla was a cashier for Wendy's Restaurant in Warwick. She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Warwick.

She was the loving mother of Jayden M. Pine of Warwick. Caring sister of Giovanni A. Meleo of Warwick and Alexandria Pine of Johnston and step sister of Hailey S. Meleo of Warwick. Cherished granddaughter of Fausto Morais of Pawtucket and Jacquelyn Kerr of Alabama.

Her funeral will be held Wednesday at 8:45 am from THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95) with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 596 Jefferson Boulevard, Warwick. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, West Greenwich. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Tuesday 7-9 pm.

Edward L. Pollard, Sr.

Edward L. Pollard, Sr., 84, of Staples Avenue, died Thursday at Kent Hospital. He was the husband of the late Helen M. (Dwyer) Pollard.

Born in Warwick, he was a son of the late Isaac R. and Ellen E. (Olson) Pollard.

Mr. Pollard was an oil burner serviceman for Erickson Oil Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1988. He served in The United States Army during WW II.

He was a communicant of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church and a member of Harmony Lodge F & AM. Mr. Pollard enjoyed ballroom dancing.

He was the beloved father of Edward L. Pollard, Jr. and Gerald M. Pollard both of Palermo, Maine and Wayne F. Pollard of Warwick. Loving grandfather of Edward III, Allison, Kelly, Lindsey, and Isaac. He was the brother of the late Isaac R. Pollard, Jr., James A. Pollard, Anna A. Daley, Mildred Fecteau, Bertha E. Moorby, Theresa M. Angell, Harriet B. McDonald, and Florence E. Cahoon.

A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated Wednesday at 10:00 am in St. Barnabas Church, 3257 Post Road, Warwick. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours Tuesday 4-7 pm in THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, Warwick with a Masonic Service at 5:00 pm. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to VNA Hospice of Care New England, 51 Health Lane, Warwick, RI 02886 would be appreciated.

John A. Rayhill

John A. Rayhill, 58, formerly of Third Avenue, died August 17, 2009 at Bannister House, Providence.

Born in Providence, he was the son of Loretta (Meunier) Rayhill of Fredericksburg, VA and the late Robert Rayhill.

He was employed as a chef at the former Great House Restaurant and a driver for Peoples' Moving & Storage Company, both of Warwick.

Besides his mother, he is survived by his sister, Sharon A. Bussler and her husband Lawrence E. Bussler of Fredericksburg, VA and his niece, Kristi Falla of Warwick.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, September 5, 2009 in THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, Warwick.

John Ricci, Sr.

John Ricci, Sr., 85, of Frederick Street, Warwick, died Monday at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Barbara H. (Dailey) Ricci. Born in Warwick, he was a son of the late Giuseppe and Dolorata (Nanni) Ricci.

Mr. Ricci was employed in the Production and Stock Departments of Hamel Dahl. A WW II Veteran of The United States Army, he served at the Battle of The Bulge and at the Normandy Invasion on D-Day 4 for which he was awarded 2 Purple Hearts. He was a member of the Pawtuxet Athletic Club, American Legion William Shields Post #43, VFW Post 183 and DAV RI Chapter 9. He was an ardent Red Sox Fan and Gardener.

He was the loving father of Joseph C. Ricci and his wife Ethel, John Ricci, Jr., and Margaret M. O'Brien and her husband Barry, all of Warwick, Joan M. Ricci and her husband Charles Hoar of Marco Island, FL, and Elizabeth B. Ricci and her husband Bernard Russell of Cranston. Caring brother of Rose T. Rogers of Ft. Myers, FL, Constance Proulx of West Warwick, and the laet James, Roy and Thomas Ricci and Mildred Bouthlier. Cherished grandfather of Meghan Greene, Joseph Ricci, and Adam Ricci.

His funeral will be held Thursday at 8:45 am from THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95) with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. William Church, 200 Pettaconsett Avenue, Warwick. Burial, with military honors, will follow in R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Wednesday 5-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to R.I. Association for Cardiac Children, P.O. Box 3904, North Providence, RI 02911 would be appreciated.

Dorothy (Hagan) Root

Dorothy (Hagan) Root, 83, formerly of Warwick, died peacefully on September 22, 2009 at Evergreen House Health Center in East Providence.

She was born in Providence, a daughter of the late Cyril F. and Gladys I. (Goodby) Hagan. She was the loving wife of the late Adelbert B. Root.

Mrs. Root was a secretary and sales service representative for American Airlines for eighteen years and worked for Federal Products in Providence for nine years until her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church.

She leaves her son, David L. Root and his wife, Melissa A. Root of N. Dighton. Cherished grandmother of Daniel, Cailyn, and Madison Root of N. Dighton.

Her funeral will be held Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 8:45 am from THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Greenwood, Warwick (Exit 12A off I-95) with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 3250 Post Road, Warwick. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4:00 to 7:00 pm. Burial will follow in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.

Jeannette M. (Bessette) Sassi

Jeannette M. (Bessette) Sassi, 84, formerly of Pawtucket and Buttonwoods died Monday at her summer residence. She was the wife of the late Anthony J. Sassi.

Born in Pawtucket, she was a daughter of the late Jean L. and Cecile (Laurendeau) Bessette.

Mrs. Sassi was the beloved mother of Anthony J. Sassi, Jr. of West Warwick, Michael J. Sassi of West Greenwich, Joyce DeCiantis and Jeanne Pretto, both of Coventry, Joan Samson of Warwick, Lisa Johnson of Johnston, and Christine Donnellan of Richmond. Caring sister of Roland Bessette of Cumberland, Margaret Rinaldi of Bonita Springs, FL, Elizabeth LaPointe of Pawtucket, and the late Laurence Brdar, Fleurette Wood, Theresa Absi, and Lillian Murphy. Cherished grandmother of fourteen and great grandmother of twelve.

Her funeral will be held Friday at 8:45 am from THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95) with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Gregory The Great Church, 360 Cowesett Road, Warwick. Burial will follow in R.I. Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Thursday 4-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, gifts in her memory to Home & Hospice Care of RI, 1085 North Main St., Providence, RI 02904 would be appreciated.

Gertrude L. (Dodd) Schaefer

Gertrude L. (Dodd) Schaefer, 78, of Roundway Drive, died September 3, 2009 at home.

Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Irene (Scally) Dodd.

Ms. Schaefer was a Certified Nursing Assistant at the Rhode Island Medical Center for 32 years and Coventry Health Center for 10 years, retiring in 2002.

She was the beloved mother of Thomas Schaefer of Warwick, Charlene Perry of West Warwick, Donna Colozzo of Coventry, and the late Joseph, Frederick, and Clifford Schaefer. Caring sister of Clifford and Edward Dodd, both of Warwick, Catherine Legg of North Kingstown, and the late Thomas Dodd and Irene Coburn. Loving grandmother of seven and great grandmother of eight.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:00 am in SS John & James Parish Church, 20 Washington Street, West Warwick. Burial will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, West Warwick. Relatives and friends are invited. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. Arrangements by THE PRATA-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME.
