LILLIAN R. GAGNE - Woonsocket

LILLIAN R. GAGNE, 89, of 51 Orchard St., Bellingham, Mass., a winder at greater Woonsocket textile mills for many years before retiring in 1962, died Monday at the Ballou Home in Woonsocket.

Born in Northbridge, Mass., a daughter of the late Edmond and Maria (Gregoire) Gagne, she had lived in Bellingham since 1929, previously living in Woonsocket, Manchaug, Mass., and Sutton, Mass.

Miss Gagne was a communicant of Assumption Church in Bellingham, and a former member of its Ladies of St. Ann's.

She leaves a brother, Lucien J. Gagne of Bellingham; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Armand Gagne and Flora Gravel.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at 8 a.m. from Cartier's Funeral Home, 151 S. Main St., Bellingham, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in Assumption Church, Moody Street, Bellingham. Burial will be in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Bellingham.

Edward J. Corcoran, dies at 103; oldest practicing lawyer in state

Mr. Corcoran and his partner, Mr. Patrick O'N. Hayes, practiced law together on a daily basis for more than 50 years.

MIDDLETOWN -- Edward J. Corcoran, 103, of 549 Paradise Ave., the oldest practicing lawyer in the State of Rhode Island, actively practicing in his law firm of Corcoran, Peckham & Hayes until his illness in May, died Sunday at St. Clare Home after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Mary Stella (Walsh) Corcoran.

He moved to Newport at the age of 4 and had lived on Aquidneck Island for almost 100 years.

He attended Miss Sayer's School and later Rogers High School, where he graduated in 1910. He received a bachelor of arts degree from Brown University in 1915, and a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1918. After a brief period of service with the State Department in Washington, D.C., he was admitted to the Rhode Island Bar in 1919.

That same year he and his lifelong friend, William A. Peckham, joined the law firm of Burdick & McLeod, which became the firm of Burdick, Corcoran & Peckham in 1926. Later, in 1945, Patrick O'N. Hayes joined the firm and its name was again changed to its present name of Corcoran, Peckham & Hayes.

Throughout his long career, Mr. Corcoran has engaged in numerous civic and philanthropic projects.

He was a member of the Rhode Island Board of Bar Examiners for many years; the Newport School Committee for 16 years, part of that time as its chairman; the commission to establish zoning in Newport and Newport's first Zoning Board of Review; the citizen's group which established the City Manager form of government for Newport; and the board of trustees of the Bank of Newport where he served from 1959 to 1978.

He was for many years a trustee of Newport Hospital and a past vice president.

Mr. Corcoran was Middletown Town Moderator from 1953 to 1959 and Town Solicitor from 1954 to 1969.

He was also a member and past chairman of the Newport County Chamber of Commerce, active in the Civic League, the Newport Discussion Club, the Newport Civic Music Association, the Newport Music Festival and many other local organizations.

Mr. Corcoran worked closely as legal counsel with the late Mrs. George Henry Warren in establishing the Newport Preservation Society and with the Vanderbilt family in acquiring The Breakers for that organization.

He was a member of St. Mary Church in Newport and for many years was one of its trustees. He was a trustee of St. Clare Home, which he supplied with vegetables from his ample garden each summer.

Mr. Corcoran had a lively interest in sports, classical music and most of all in gardening. He was an enthusiastic walker and mountain climber and in his younger days climbed almost every mountain in New Hampshire and Vermont -- at least once.

Born in Fall River, Mass., the son of the late Edward J. Corcoran and Anne J. (Mahoney) Corcoran, he had lived in Middletown since 1945.

He leaves a daughter, Sister Anne Barat Corcoran, RSHM, currently at Marymount Convention Tarrytown, N.Y.; four sons, Edward B. Corcoran and Michael R. Corcoran, both of Middletown, William W. Corcoran of Newport and the Rev. John J. Corcoran, M M, presently at Maryknoll Seminary in Chicago, Ill.; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held today at 10:30 a.m. from the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary Church, Spring Street, Newport. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane.

Raymond E. Beaumier Jr., 19; took his life in police standoff

CRANSTON -- Raymond E. Beaumier Jr., 19, of Frankfort Street, a busboy at Twin Oaks Restaurant in Cranston for a year, died Monday at his home after turning a gun on himself in a standoff with police that lasted five hours.

Born in Providence, a son of Cheryl (Voccola) Beaumier, with whom he lived, and Raymond E. Beaumier Sr. of Warwick, he had lived in Cranston for most of his life.

Mr. Beaumier attended Cranston West Vocational School, and had been a member of the PeeWee Baseball League in Cranston.

Besides his parents, he leaves a companion, Kristen Wold of Hope; a sister, Rhonda Beaumier of Cranston; maternal grandparents, Marjorie (Paparelli) Voccola of Cranston and Robert A. Voccola of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and a nephew, Steven Moffett of Cranston.

The funeral will be held Friday at 9 a.m. from the Romano Funeral Home, 627 Union Ave., Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 in St. Bartholomew Church, Laurel Hill Avenue, Providence. Burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery.

Margaret C. 'Peg' Loftus, dies at 86; first woman on Newport City Council

NEWPORT -- Margaret C. "Peg" Loftus, 86, of the St. Clare Home, 309 Spring St., formerly of 103 Prospect Hill St., died Monday at the home. In 1965, she was the first woman elected to the Newport City Council. She was elected Vice Mayor by Council members in 1967-1968. She was a nurse at the James L. Maher Center on Hillside Avenue from 1967 until retiring in 1985. She was the wife of the late George Loftus.

Born in Newport, she was the daughter of the late Garrett J. and Pauline C. (Smith) Kirwin.

Mrs. Loftus attended the Newport Hospital School of Nursing. During her nursing career, she also was a private duty nurse and had worked at the Forest Farm Health Care Center.

She was a lifelong member of St. Mary Church and was active in the Catholic Daughters of America. She had served as president of the Practical Nurses Association, the Newport Women's Democratic Club and St. Mary's Guild. She was also a member of the State Democratic Committee and the City Democratic Committee, and had worked on the original campaign for Sen. Claiborne Pell.

She leaves two daughters, Pauline Walsh of Marietta, Ga., and Ellen Swanson of Newport; 16 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late George W. Loftus and the sister of the late Pauline Kirwin Miller.

The funeral will be held Saturday at 8:15 a.m. from the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 a.m. in St. Mary Church, Spring Street. Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery, Brown's Lane, Middletown.

Prof. Charles G. Hoffman, 75; taught English at URI for 25 years

KINGSTON -- Charles G. Hoffman, 75, professor emeritus of English at the University of Rhode Island, died May 8 at Guemes Island, Wash., where he had lived since 1988. He was the husband of the late Anastasia "Tess" C. Hoffman, professor emerita of English at Rhode Island College, who died in 1994.

A Rhode Island resident for 37 years, Prof. Hoffman and his wife lived in Kingston, Providence and Newport before they moved to Guemes Island.

Born in Port Washington, Wis., he was a son of the late Henry and Celia Hoffman.

Prof. Hoffman received a bachelor's degree in English and psychology in 1944 from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He received a master's degree in English and creative writing from the University of Iowa and a doctorate in American literature and philosophy from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1952.

He came to URI in 1952 and taught graduate and undergraduate courses in modern American and British literature, retiring in 1977. His publications included numerous scholarly articles and reviews, and individual books on the novelists Ford Madox Ford, Henry James and Joyce Cary. A revised edition of his book on Ford was published in 1990.

Among his writings are two books on social and cultural history which, following his retirement from URI, he co-authored with his wife, Tess Hoffman: North by South: The Two Lives of Richard James Arnold and Brotherly Love: Murder and the Politics of Prejudice in Nineteenth-Century Rhode Island. Brotherly Love won the 1994 Myers Center Award for the Study of Human Rights in North America.

At the time of his death, Prof. Hoffman had completed most of his memoirs.

He leaves a sister, Adele Donze of San Jose, Calif.

A memorial service will be held at Guemes Island in September.

ANDREW G. RANIERI - Barrington

ANDREW G. RANIERI, 56, of 249 Narragansett Ave., an automobile technician with Norwood Motors in Warwick, died Sunday at Quonset Point while on maneuvers with the Rhode Island Air National Guard. He was the husband of Loretta (Botelho) Ranieri.

Mr. Ranieri was a Master Sgt. with the National Guard's 143rd CSS Tactical Unit at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick. He had worked at Norwood Motors for 4 years and prior to that was employed for 20 years at Colonial Motors in Providence.

Born in Providence, a son of Theresa (Pannone) Ranieri of Barrington and the late Francisco Ranieri, he had lived in Barrington all his life.

Besides his wife and mother, he leaves two daughters, Cheryl and Donna Ranieri, both at home; four sisters, Jennie Proto, Rita Gaudreau and Carol Paradiso, all of Barrington, and Dorothy Bruneau of Warren. He was the brother of the late Viola Petit and Rose Donato.

The funeral will be held tomorrow at 9 a.m. from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main St., Warren, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Alexander's Church, Main Street, Warren. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery, Warren.

THERESE M. SENERCHIA - Cranston

THERESE M. SENERCHIA, 48, of Brookfield Drive, a patient interviewer at Miriam Hospital for more than five years until her illness, died Monday at home after a one-month illness.

Born in Providence, a daughter of Claire (Biron) Bousquet of Coventry and the late Zephir J. Bousquet, she had lived in Warwick before moving to Cranston in 1979.

Ms. Senerchia had been a secretary at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Providence, for more than seven years.

Besides her mother, she leaves two daughters, Stephanie and Sarah Senerchia, both of Cranston; three sisters, Carol Gaffney of Coventry, Susan Seeklander in Idaho and Lori Gregory of Silver Lake, Wis.; and three brothers, Roger Bousquet of Providence, Michael Bousquet of West Greenwich and Paul Bousquet of Hill, N.H.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 7 p.m. in the Gospel Temple Assembly of God Church, Nooseneck Hill Road, West Greenwich.

ARTHUR G. RICHOTTE - East Providence

ARTHUR G. RICHOTTE, 69, of South Broadway, a driver salesman for Pepsi-Cola Co. for 48 years, retiring in 1993, died Tuesday at home. He was the husband of Loretta (Hall) Duarte-Richottte.

Born in West Warwick, a son of the late George and Hosana (Salvas) Richotte, he had lived in East Providence most of his life. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of the Rehoboth American Legion.

Mr. Richotte was a member of the Rehoboth Senior Citizens, and the Rhode Island Chapter of the New England Cribbage Association.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Diane Chase of Richmond; a son, Robert Richotte of East Greenwich; four stepdaughters, Shirley Amaral of East Providence, Linda Smith of Bristol, Beverly Fernandes of Lighthouse Point, Fla., and Marion Mowry of Coventry; three stepsons, Frank Duarte in Maine, Anthony S. Duarte Jr. of Duxbury, Mass., and Arthur W. Morris in Alaska; a sister, Doris Lavoie of Coventry; 33 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. He was the stepfather of the late Julia Duarte and brother of the late Veronica Lavoie and Dorothy Gamache.

The funeral will be held Friday at 8:45 a.m. from the Rebello Funeral Home, 901 Broadway, East Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Brendan Church, Turner Avenue, Riverside. Burial with military honors will be in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.

JOSEPH SILVIA - Fall River

JOSEPH SILVIA, 73, of 100 Amity St., formerly of 2000 Bay St., and 41 Argyle Rd., Somerset, an installer of house foundations for the construction industry 20 years before retiring in 1984, died Monday at Charlton Memorial Hospital.

Born in Fall River, a son of the late Manuel Souza da Silva and the late Maria (Botelho) da Silva, he had been a Fall River resident for five years.

Mr. Silvia was a World War II Army veteran.

He leaves a son, Joseph Silvia in Florida; a daughter, Joanne Lachance of Swansea; a brother, Manuel Silvia of Somerset; three sisters, Agnes Feijo and Mary Machado, both of Fall River, and Irene Oliveira of Tiverton; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated tomorrow at 10 a.m. in St. Dominic Church, GAR Highway, Swansea.
