VIOLA H. TAVARES - Fall River

VIOLA H. TAVARES, 81, of 154 Maple St., died yesterday at Charlton Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joseph Tavares.

A lifelong Fall River resident, she was a daughter of the late Josef and Agnes (Sowa) Piela.

Mrs. Tavares was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church.

She leaves two daughters, Barbara Cunard and Patricia Pereira, both of Fall River; three brothers, Edward Piela, Frank Piela and Matthew Piela, all of Fall River; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was also the sister of the late Stella Brabant and Walter Piela.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 7:45 a.m. from the Boyko Memorial Funeral Home, 709 Broadway (Route 138), with a funeral Mass at 9 in Sacred Heart Church, Linden Street. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery.

Woman's body found on beach a likely suicide, police say

MIDDLETOWN -- The body of a Middletown woman who police say apparently committed suicide was found Monday on Peabody's Beach on Third Beach Road.

Police Capt. Edward Tracy identified the woman as Susan M. Botelho, 58, of 885 Mitchell's Lane.

A passerby discovered Botelho's body on the beach at approximately 12:30 p.m. Monday, Tracy said.

Botelho was in a sitting position and had a single gunshot wound to her head, Tracy said. The woman held a .38-caliber revolver in her hand, Tracy said. There did not appear to be any signs of a struggle.

It was not clear yesterday how long Botelho had been at the beach before her body was found, or if the gun was hers.

Tracy said police are investigating.

DORIS E. FORD - Cranston

DORIS E. FORD, 79, of Harris Avenue, died Monday in the Elmbrook Nursing Home, Smithfield, after a four-month illness. She was the widow of Raymond J. Ford.

Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late James R. and Dagma E. (Nelson) Leckenby. She had lived in Cranston for three years, previously residing in North Kingstown for eight years.

She is survived by a son, Raymond Ford Jr. of Providence; two daughters, Barbara A. Hobert of Cranston and Marilyn D. Homenick of Johnston; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be private. Burial will be in the Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.

RUTH H. ROHRMAN - East Providence

RUTH H. ROHRMAN, 87, formerly of Hoppin Avenue, Riverside, an employee in the book publishing department of the former Liver, Moore & Knight Printing Co., Providence, for 25 years before retiring in 1970, died yesterday at Metacom Manor Nursing Home in Bristol. She was the wife of the late George H. Rohrman.

Born in Easthampton, Mass., a daughter of the late Edward and Elsie (Katzschmann) Johnson, she had lived in Riverside for 60 years.

Mrs. Rohrman was a member of Ruth's Circle of St. James Lutheran Church, Barrington. She was a 10-year member of Southeastern New England Theater Organ Society.

She leaves two daughters, Joyce Alves of Bristol, and Nancy Moore of Phoenix, Ariz.; a sister, Eunice Johnson of Easthampton; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was a sister of the late Bertha Meyer.

The funeral will be held Friday at 10:45 a.m. from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, 350 Willett Ave., Riverside, with a service at noon at St. James Lutheran Church, Middle Highway, Barrington. Burial will be in Warren South Cemetery in Warren.

MARY ELLEN ZAYDON - East Providence

MARY ELLEN ZAYDON, 41, of Newman Avenue, who worked in the nursing education department of Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence for 10 years before retiring, died yesterday at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence after a long illness. She was the wife of Dr. Paul Zaydon, M.D.

Born in Providence, a daughter of Joseph and Margaret "Rita" (Yodice) DiBiase of Riverside, she was a lifelong East Providence resident.

Mrs. Zaydon was a communicant of St. Basil the Great Church in Central Falls. She was a 1974 graduate of East Providence High School.

Besides her husband and parents, she leaves two daughters, Angela Zaydon and Camille Zaydon, and a son, Joseph Zaydon, all at home; and two sisters, Elizabeth Cardillo of Exeter and Camille Wingate of Lafayette, Calif.

The funeral will be held Friday at 8:30 a.m. from the Rebello Funeral Home, 901 Broadway, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Basil the Great Church, Broad Street, Central Falls. Burial will be in Mount St. Mary Cemetery in Pawtucket.

PAUL FRANCIS MARTIN - East Providence

PAUL FRANCIS MARTIN, 67, of 513 Bonita Drive, Lady Lake, Fla., formerly of Seekonk, Mass., a production manager with Davol Inc. of Cranston before retiring, died Monday at Leesburg (Fla.) Regional Medical Center after being stricken. He was the husband of Ruth E. (Rogers) Martin.

Born in Providence, a son of the late Joseph Francis and Margaret Mary (Frates) Martin, he had lived in Seekonk, for 22 years until 1977, and in San Diego before moving to Florida in 1990.

Mr. Martin was a 1946 graduate of East Providence High School. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II and the Korean War, and a member of American Legion Post 347, Lady Lake. He served with the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces in Palestine in 1948 and 1949. He had often performed as a clown and had volunteered at children's hospitals. He was an avid intarsia craftsman.

Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Stephen T. Martin of Oklahoma City, Okla., Paul F. Martin Jr. of East Providence, Michael J. Martin of Pawtucket, and David T. Martin of Riverside; a daughter, Kathy E. McCord of Oklahoma City; three brothers, Robert J. Martin of Panama City, Fla., Joseph F. Martin Jr. and James T. Martin, both of Providence; a sister, Margaret Mary Costa of Exeter; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. at Beyers Funeral Chapel, 134 North Highway 27/441, Lady Lake.

MUSETTA I. AMARAL - East Providence

MUSETTA I. AMARAL, 84, formerly of Goldsmith Avenue, a nurse's aide at Hattie Ide Chaffee Nursing Home for 20 years before retiring 20 years ago, died Saturday at the Hattie Ide Chaffee home. She was the wife of the late William P. Amaral.

Born in Dighton, Mass., a daughter of the late Frederick and Mary (Grant) Richmond, she had lived in East Providence for 65 years.

Mrs. Amaral was a former member of the City View Manor Tenants Association.

She leaves a son, Robert F. Amaral of East Providence; a sister, Elena Dudley of Norton, Mass.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late William P. Amaral Jr.

The funeral will be held today at 8 a.m. from the Perry-McStay Funeral Home, 2555 Pawtucket Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 at Our Lady of Loreto Church, Waterman Avenue. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

HELEN E. LEVREAULT - Fall River

HELEN E. LEVREAULT, 75, of Chavenson Street, formerly of School Street, a floor coordinator at the Catholic Memorial Home for 15 years retiring in 1985, died Monday at Charlton Memorial Hospital. She was the widow of Joseph F. Levreault.

A lifelong Fall River resident, she was a daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (McCarthy) Domino.

Mrs. Levreault was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. She was previously employed by the former LinJay Manufacturing Co. as a stitcher for over 20 years. She was a former communicant of Saints Peter and Paul Church.

An arts and crafts enthusiast, she had developed an interest in Native American culture, attending many area powwows.

She leaves six daughters, Patricia H. Nogueira, Phyllis Costa and Elizabeth Hooker, all of Fall River, Lena A. Valcourt of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., Carol Letendre of North Attleboro and Lorraine Levrault of New Bedford; one son, Felix J. Levrault of New Bedford; one brother, John McCarthy, formerly of Fall River; three sisters, Rita Santos of Westport, Laura Domino of Attleboro and Alice Domino, formerly of Lakeville; 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held Friday at 8 a.m. from the Hathaway Home for Funerals, 1813 Robeson St., with a funeral Mass at 9 in Saints Peter and Paul Church, Dover Street. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown, R.I.

M. GERTRUDE FRIEND - Newport

M. GERTRUDE FRIEND, 97, of 428 Spring St., an employee, with her husband, of the Hill family at Bois Dore for 25 years before retiring, died Monday at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Albert G. Friend.

Born in Newport, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Margaret (Murphy) Kelly.

Mrs. Friend was a parishioner of St. Mary Church.

She leaves a granddaughter, Sharon E. Keating Mosher of Newport; a grandson, Lawrence M. Keating of Tiverton; and four great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Elizabeth A. Friend Keating.

The funeral service will be private. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

SHIRLEY M. MERRITT - North Kingstown

SHIRLEY M. MERRITT, 68, of Bethany Lane, an employee in the North Kingstown and Warwick school systems' food service departments before retiring, died yesterday at Coventry Health Center. She was the wife of Clifford A. Merritt.

Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Charles H. and Edna (Wood) Gay, she had been a resident of Warwick before moving to North Kingstown 31 years ago.

Mrs. Merritt was a former member of the DeMolay Mothers Club, King Solomon Chapter.

Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Kenneth A. Merritt and Craig S. Merritt, both of Coventry; two sisters, Ruth Morgan of Coventry and Audrey Snyder of Norwich, N.Y.; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She was the sister of the late Sumner, Robert, Lloyd and Norman Gay, Edna Snyder and Muriel Sutherland.

The funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich. Burial will be private.
