Newport, RI - Grace Hansen, 79, of 26 Calvert Street, Newport, died Saturday, October 22, 2005 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.

She was the wife of Nicholas Hansen.

Born in Chickasha, OK on December 19, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Mary (Edmonds) Russell.

Mrs. Hansen was an avid reader and had enjoyed biclying and Photography over the years. Mrs. Hansen had worked as a young woman in various restaurants in the Newport area as a waitresss and in the former General Electric Plant on Thames Street in Newport.

She is survived by her husband Nicholas Hansen of Newport, RI, her brother Harold Edgar Russell of Seal Beach, CA, her sister Dorothy Apricio of Colorado Springs, CO, five nieces Jenny Hansen and Holly Hansen both of Michigan, Denise Yelle of Connecticut, Sandra McChesney of Marion Center, PA, and Pamela Pelletier of Portsmouth, RI, six nephews Nicholas Hansen, Glenn Hansen, and Norman Hansen all of Michigan, Dennis Yelle of Providence, RI, Chester B. Adams Jr. of Westport, MA, and Lee D. Adams of Fall River, MA.

She was preceded in death by three brothers Lewis, Owen and Hershel Russell, and a sister Ethel Capps.

Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at 6:00 PM in Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, RI.

Relatives and Friends may call at the Memorial Funeral Home on Tuesday October 25, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

Lorraine Alice (Germano) McCabe

NEWPORT, RI - Lorraine Alice (Germano) McCabe, 77, of 4D Rolling Green, Newport, RI, died Tuesday, January 24, 2006, at Newport Hospital, Newport, RI.

She was the wife of the late Warren C. McCabe Sr.

Born in Boston, MA on October 23, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Joseph James and Irene (LaCourse) Germano.

Mrs. McCabe was a member of the Ladies Auxillary of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch #19, Past President of the Ladies Auxillary of the VFW 4487 and a member of AARP.

She is survived by her children James M. McCabe of Portsmouth, RI, Joseph K. McCabe of Green Harbor, MA, Thomas J. McCabe of Portsmouth, RI, and Irene “Renie” Lamphere of Newport, RI, thirteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

She was the mother of the late Kenneth J. McCabe and Warren C. McCabe Jr., and the sister of the late Alphonse A. Germano, Robert J. Germano, Joseph J. Germano Jr., and James Germano.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, January 27, 2006, at 8:00am, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00am, in St. Lucy's Church, 909 West Main Road, Middletown.

Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2006, from 4-8pm in the Memorial Funeral Home.

Dorothy (Kirkwood) Milley McDaid

Portsmouth, RI - Dorothy (Kirkwood) Milley McDaid, 83, of 65 Gormley Avenue, Portsmouth, formerly of Aquidneck Place, Portsmouth, RI, died Saturday, September 4, 2004, at the Grand Islander Health Care Center after a long illness.

She was the wife of the late Jack Milley and the late John McDaid.

Born in Fall River, MA on September 7, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Stephen P. and Elizabeth (Flood) Kirkwood.

Mrs. McDaid grew up in Portsmouth. She graduated from Rogers High School and the Newport Hospital School of Nursing and went on to her nursing career in New York’s Kings County Hospital, where she spent more than 30 years caring for premature infants.

She met her first husband, Jack, in Newport, and she moved to New York City when he returned to a Naval Hospital there following WWII. After his death, she remained in New York and earned her BSN at St. John’s University. In 1953, she met and married her second husband, John, who passed away in 1979.

After retiring, she moved back home to Portsmouth, where she was a Communicant of St. Anthony’s Church.

She is survived by her son John McDaid of Portsmouth, RI, a daughter in law Karen McDaid of Portsmouth, her beloved grandson Jack McDaid of Portsmouth, RI, her sister in law Juliette Kirkwood Whitehead of New Bedford, MA, her brother in law Michael McDaid of Middletown, RI, and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Arthur Kirkwood, Stephen B. “Buddy” Kirkwood and Rita (Kirkwood) Hoyt, and the grandmother of the late Maxwell McDaid.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday, September 9, 2004, at 10:00AM, in St. Anthony's Church, 2836 East Main Road, Portsmouth.

Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Fall River.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Newport Hospital Birthing Center, 11 Friendship Street, Newport, RI, 02840.

David R. Ebbitt

PORTSMOUTH, RI - David R. Ebbitt, 85, of Aquidneck Place, Portsmouth, formerly of Red Cross Avenue, died Thursday, March 3, 2005 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.

He was the husband of the late Wilma (Robb) Ebbitt.

Born in Newport, RI on March 18, 1919, he was the son of the late W. Frank and Bernice (Ailman) Ebbitt.

Mr. Ebbitt was a direct descendant of Nicolas Easton, one of the original settlers of
Newport. Mr. Ebbitt graduated from Rogers High School in 1937, he received a B.A. in English
Literature with honors from Brown University in 1941, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa
and graduated magna cum laude. He worked for many years as a senior editor in the textbook division of Scott-Foreman & Co. in Chicago. With his wife, the late Wilma Robb Ebbitt, he co-authored The Writer´s Guide and Index to English published by Oxford University Press. Mr. Ebbitt was an enthusiastic and knowledgeable jazz fan. A talented artist, he had an exhibit of his humorous sketches, most featuring his basset hound, at Swinburne House in Newport. At Brown he was on the swim team, and until a few years ago, he did regular laps at Third Beach with great pleasure.

He leaves two nieces, Karen Steers Ebbitt and Paula F. Ebbitt both of Cambridge, MA, his nephew Hugh A. Ebbitt and his wife Irene of Middletown, RI and two great-nieces, Michala A. Ebbitt and Kristina L. Ebbitt.

He was the brother of the late Paul Francis Ebbitt.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 26, 2005, at 11:00AM in the Hambly Funeral Home, “Brick House,” 30 Red Cross Ave., Newport.

Friends are warmly invited to attend.

Donations may be made in his memory to the charity of one´s choice.

Dorothy Jean (Brown) Burkhardt

Newport, - Dorothy Jean (Brown) Burkhardt, 75, of Gibson Park Place, Newport, formerly of Pennacook Street, Newport, died Saturday, March 19, 2005 at home surrounded by her family.

She was the wife of the late Arthur F. Burkhardt Jr.

Born in Newport, RI, on July 7, 1929, she was the daughter of the late George and Violet (Christie) Brown.

Mrs. Burkhardt was a life long member of the United Baptist Church in Newport. From 1948-1953 she had worked for the telephone company on Spring Street in Newport. She was an avid knitter and reader who loved the outdoors and gardening. Dorothy spent years as a leader for the Girl Scouts of America and was devoted to her cats.

She is survived by one son Arthur Frederick Burkhardt III of Newport, RI, five daughters Gail Ratkowski of Newport, RI, Kathleen Riego of Ramona, CA, Delia Ansell of Highlands Ranch, CO, Jo-Ann Scott of Norfolk, VA, and Margaret Graziano of Gilbert, AZ, two sisters Ada Beebe of Newport, RI, and Barbara Sidok of Warren, RI, 12 Grandchildren, and 8 Great Grandchildren.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2005, at 1:00PM, in the United Baptist Church, 30 Spring Street, Newport.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, March 23, 2005, from 1-3 and 6-8PM, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.

Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.

Marion Galvin Beckers

Middletown, - Marion (Galvin) Beckers, 92, of Blenheim Newport, 303 Valley Road, Middletown, RI, formerly of Spartanburg, South Carolina, died Friday, March 18, 2005 at the Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center, Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI.

She was the wife of the late Charles V. Beckers.

Born in Baltimore, MD, on February 25, 1913, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Helen (Goldner) Galvin.

She is survived by her son Charles V. Beckers Jr. and his wife Susan K. Beckers of Newport, RI, her brother David W. Galvin of Ridge, NY, and her grandson Alexander C. Beckers of Los Angeles, CA. She was the sister of the late George E. Galvin, Walter C. Galvin, Daniel T. Galvin, and Evelyn G. Vogt.

Funeral services and burial will be private.

Mary (Monteiro) Woodward

Newport, RI - Mary Woodward, 85, of 30 Freeborn Street Newport, RI, died Monday, March 28, 2005 at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.

Born in Newport, RI on September 9, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Maximo and Geralda (Neves) Monteiro.

Mrs. Woodward was a 1939 graduate of Rogers High School. She worked at the former Naval Torpedo Station during WWII, then worked for 5 years as a bookkeeper at the former Townsend Patriot Studio before working at the Newport Hospital for 10 years as a utility aide and then for 3 years in the purchasing department, retiring in 1984 at age 65. Mrs. Woodward was a communicant of St. Josephs Church and she was an avid reader.

She is survived by her brother Albert Monteiro of Newport, RI, many neices and nephews and many great neices and great nephews.

She was the sister of the late Julius Monteiro, Joseph Monteiro, Manuel Monteiro, Maximo Monteiro Jr., John Monteiro, Anthony Monteiro, Raoul Galvin, Georgina (Monteiro) Andrews, and Rita Monteiro.

John Harry Koulouvardis

NEWPORT, RI - John Harry Koulouvardis, 77, of 52 Charles Street, Newport, RI, formerly of 31-77 35st Astoria, New York, died Tuesday, March 29, 2005 at John Clarke Nursing Home Middletown, Rhode Island.

Born in Newport, RI on August 17, 1927, he was the son of the late Harry C. and Helen (Michalopoulos) Koulouvardis.

John was a 1945 graduate of Rogers High School, unpon his graduation he joined the United States Naval Seebees from 1945 to 1946, during World War II in the Pacific and then re-enlisted in 1951 until 1955 during the Korean War, in French Morocco and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. He attended St. Spyridon Greek Church. John attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston, then the Rhode Island School of Design, graduating in 1960, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He worked at the former Kenneth Olson Studio of New York City for over 20 years, as a graphic artist. John enjoyed “Charles Dickens” ”A Christmas Carol” and had put it to memory. He was a member of the Island of Skiathos Organization of Newport. John considered himself an Opera Aficionado as well as a Historian buff on the Civil War, the Balkan Wars and the Spanish American War. John helped restore artifacts both in Newport and at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. He was an avid vegetable gardener and had won awards for his produce here in Newport. John was also known to help his brother at the family shoe repair store the Rhode Island Shoe Repair on Thames Street, Newport, RI.

He is survived by his brother and sister, George Koulouvardis and Catherine “Katie” Koulouvardis both of Newport, RI, his nephew and niece Harry Koulouvardis of Middletown, RI, and Helen Nelson of Newport, RI, his grandnieces and grandnephew Melissa Nelson of Newport, RI, Christopher Koulouvardis and Katina Koulouvardis both of Middletown, RI, and cousins in Greece and the United States.

In John´s memory please make donations to the St. Spyridon's Greek Orthodox Church, Endowment Fund, 390 Thames Street, Newport, RI 02840.

Dana Glenn Foss

Newport, RI - Dana Glenn Foss, 48, of Third Street Newport, died Saturday, March 26, 2005 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.

Born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on February 8, 1957, he was the son of Gerald and Betty Jean (Westgate) Foss of Middletown, RI

Dana had worked in the manufacturing industry in the New Jersey area.

Besides his parents Dana leaves behind his two children Jason Foss and Danielle Foss both of Garfield, NJ, his brothers and sisters Brian Foss of Tiverton, RI, Richard Foss of Middletown, RI, Thomas Foss of Virginia, Brenda Wasilewski of Middletown, RI, Rhonda Weaver of Landing, NJ, Angela Foss of Virginia and Rachel Foss of West Virginia, and several nieces and nephews.

John J. Bento

Portsmouth, RI - John J. Bento, 85, of 511 Boyds Lane Portsmouth, RI, died Sunday, March 27, 2005 at St. Anne's Hospital Fall River, MA.

He was the husband of Raylene L. (Barton) Bento of Portsmouth, RI.

Born in Fall River, Massachusetts on July 4, 1919, he was the son of the late Joseph and Agnes (Horan) Bento.

John was a Staff Sergeant serving in the United States Army during World War II. After returning from the war, he worked for 38 years for the Tiverton Post Office. He retired on July 5, 1974 as a Postmaster. He was a member of the Portsmouth Democratic Town Committee for many years. John was an avid reader, a loyal Red Sox Fan and a former stamp collector. He played a good game of tennis and was known to give private tennis lessons to his friends.

Besides his loving wife of thirty three years he is survived by his children Thomas A. Metcalfe of Tiverton, RI, and Raylene L. Allen of Portsmouth, RI, his brothers and sister Robert Bento of Jaffrey, NH, Paul Bento of Auburn, MA, and Mary Blake of Middletown, RI, his grandsons Thomas A. Metcalfe III of Saco, ME, and Alexander E. Allen of Portsmouth, RI, and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held on Monday, April 4, 2005, at 11:00 AM in Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. Burial will be in Portsmouth Cemetery in Portsmouth, RI.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2005, from 4-7pm in the funeral home.
