Benjamin E. Hall Jr.

Portsmouth - Benjamin E. Hall Jr., 76, of 191 West Shore Road, Portsmouth, died Friday, April 1, 2005, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence, RI.

He was the husband of Claudette (Gagon) Hall, and the late Sue (Brown) Hall.

Born in Fall River, MA, on January 14, 1929, he was the son of the late Benjamin Hall and Etta (Korzeneski) Hall.

Mr. Hall had worked as a welder for the Newport Electric Corporation for over 20 years, retiring in 1991. He was a Veteran of the US Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hall had also worked on the construction of the Newport and Sakonnet River Bridges, as well as the building of Pier 1 and Pier 2 at the Newport Naval Base. Mr. Hall also helped in the removal of the old Sakonnet Bridge following the hurricane of 1954. He had also worked on waterfront projects in Newport. He was a former member of the Carpenters Union Local #176. Mr. Hall was an avid fisherman and boater. He was also a longtime member of the NRA.

Besides his wife he is survived by a son Benjamin J. Hall of Newport, RI, two daughters Cathleen VanHof of Portsmouth, RI, and Sandra Hall of Portsmouth, RI, two sisters Mary Nowlan of Portsmouth, RI, and Barbara Johnson of Attleboro, MA, three grandchildren Brandon R. Hall of Newport, RI, Hillary VanHof of Portsmouth, RI, and Eleanor VanHof of Portsmouth, RI, and his beloved dog Cooper.

He was preceded in death by a son David Hall and a sister Joanne Packard.

Funeral services and burial will be private.

Memorial donations may be made to the Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Wagon Fund, P.O. Box 806, Portsmouth, RI, 02871.

Arrangements are by the Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth.

Arnold J. Wayne

Newport, RI – Arnold J. Wayne, 78, of 47 Warner Street Newport, died Friday, April 1, 2005 at Heatherwood Nursing And Subacute Center Newport, RI.

He was the husband of Carrie B. (Williams) Wayne.

Born in Brooklyn, NY on December 15, 1926, he was the son of the late Chester & Agnes (Middleton) Wayne and the stepson of the late Estella Wayne.

Mr. Wayne was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, serving in the United States Navy as seaman second class. During World War II, he received the World War II Victory Medal and the American Area Campaign Medal. He also served in the Korean War in the South Pacific. Mr. Wayne was in the service for 4 1/2 years. He worked at the Newport Hospital as a first cook and chef for twenty two years and also for Paul & Eddies Restaurant for six years and the 200 Club on Broadway. Mr. Wayne was also employed at the Newport Public Works Department, the Naval Base and at the Newport Preservation Society as a security guard for several years. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Church.

Besides his loving wife he is survived by his children, Estella Miller of Middletown, RI, Grace Dore of North Kingstown, RI, Pamela Woodson of Virginia Beach, VA, William Donald Wayne of Providence, RI, and Robert Gordon Wayne of Sacramento, CA, thirteen grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren and many neices and nephews. He was the brother of the late Ernest Wayne of Philadelphia, PA.

Christopher G. Morris

Portsmouth, RI - Christopher G. Morris, 51, of a lifelong resident of Portsmouth, died Monday, March 7, 2005 at home.

Born in Newport, RI, on June 25, 1953 he was the son of the late Theresa Morris.

Christopher attended Portsmouth High School and was a veteran certified welder with over 20 years experience. For many years he worked at Electric Boat Quonset and was an accomplished shade tree mechanic and a good friend.

He was the son of the late Theresa Morris, the brother of the late Dorothy Morris and the grandson of the late Manuel Morris.

His services were private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Christopher’s memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 209 Cottage Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860.

Matthew Vincent Hyman

Newport, RI - Matthew Vincent Hyman, infant son of Christopher Toppa and Elizabeth Hyman, 239 B Eustis Avenue Newport, died Sunday, April 3, 2005 at Newport Hospital Newport, RI.

Besides his parents he is survived by his sisters Gwen Toppa and Marissa Toppa both of Newport, RI.

Funeral services were private.

Donald L. Crow

MIDDLETOWN, RI - Donald L. Crow 77, of 83 Jo-Ann Avenue, Portsmouth, RI, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, RI.

He was the husband of Darlene (Gillespie) Crow.

Born in Bayard, Nebraska on January 20, 1928, he was the son of the late Oner and Lottie (Williamson) Crow.

Donald Crow served in the United States Navy for 24 years. Serving during World War Ii, Korea and Vietnam, he retired as a Senior Chief. After his Navy career, Mr. Crow worked for the State of Rhode Island for 20 years, retiring as Health Inspector. He also worked with Septic Systems as a tester, until his retirement in 1991.

Besides his beloved wife of 48 years he is survived by his children Cheri Crow and her husband Mark Mulvanity of Reading MA, Terry L. Crow of Colorado Springs, CO, David L. Crow and Russell L. Crow and his wife Kathleen M. Williams of Portsmouth, RI, his sister Patricia Jordan of Goodland, KS, and his granddaughters Meredith and Ashely Mulvanity both of Reading, MA.

He was the brother of the late Harold Crow and Irene Ripley.

His funeral will be held on Monday, April 11, 2005, at 10:00AM, in Portsmouth United Methodist Church, 2732 East Main Road, Portsmouth.

Burial will be in Trinity Cemetery in Portsmouth.

Dorothy G. James

NEWPORT, RI - Dorothy G. (Murphy) James, 73, of 38 Dudley Avenue, and formerly of Rolling Green, Newport, RI, died Monday, April 11, 2005 at Heatherwood Nursing and Subacute Center, Newport, RI.

She was the wife of the late Willard James.

Born in Newport, RI on February 7, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Margaret (Sargent) Murphy.

Dorothy graduated from St. Catherine’s in Newport. She worked for over 20 years at the Newport Public Library as a librarian aid. She was a communicant of Jesus Saviour Church. Dorothy was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She is survived by her children Michael F. James and his wife Deborah of Newport, RI, and Deborah M. Janise and her husband Alton-Frank of Newport, RI, her siblings Henry Murphy and John Murphy both of Newport, RI, her sister in Law Margaret Murphy of Connecticut, her grandchildren David James of Providence, RI, Michael James Jr. of Ohio, Matthew Decker of Newport, RI, and Jennifer Jackson of Maryland and her great grandchildren Jessica James of Ohio and Felicity Jackson of Maryland.

She was the sister of the late Howard Murphy and Mary Gilchrest.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday, April 14, 2005, at 8:00 AM from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9:00 AM in Jesus Saviour Church, Broadway And Vernon Avenue, Newport.

Burial will be in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.

Florence Gertrude Wilderman

MIDDLETOWN, RI - Florence G. Wilderman, 96, of 30A Freeborn Street, Newport, RI, died Thursday, April 7, 2005 at Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown, RI after a short illness.

Born in Boston, MA on July 4, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Simon Frederick Gouthro and Gertrude (Anderson) Kronman.

She was the widow of Charles A. Wilderman, who died in 1980. The Wildermans were married almost 54 years.

Mrs. Wilderman lived the first 75 years of her life in Everett MA and relocated to Newport in 1984. While in Everett she was a very active member of the community in many capacities. She served as a trustee for the Parlin Memorial Library for 32 years and on the Everett Salvation Army Advisory Board for 17 years. She was a member of the Greater Boston Women's Auxiliary of the Salvation Army. A member of the Friendly Circle of the Blind for 44 years, she served as its leader for 27 years. This group entertained the blind community with a once a month dinner at the various churches in the area.

She joined the Congregational Church in Everett in 1936 and over the years held just about every office including president of the Women's Fellowship and the Sigma Sigma Gammas. She served as chairman of the Memorial Committee, as a member of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Business Affairs. She was well known for heading up the lobster salad luncheons held at the church every year.

In Newport she was a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board and volunteered on a regular basis at its soup kitchen. She belonged to Church Women United and was active in the United Congregational Church in Middletown. She was a member of the Friendship Club of the Martin Luther King Center and a former member of its Recycled Teenagers Club. An active participant at the Edward King House she assisted at many of their Penny Socials. She served as hospitality chairman for the local NARFE Chapter # 869 for many years. At the time of her death she was president of the American Legion Auxiliary Newport Unit #7. She was an active member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary #4487 and until several weeks ago made monthly visits to the Bristol Veterans Home and helped run Bingo parties for the patients. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed playing 500 Rummy whenever she could find a partner.

During the 1940s and 1950s for a period of 17 years she was employed by the Pinkerton Detective Agency as an undercover operative. She had many interesting stories to tell about those years.

Mrs. Wilderman was generous and caring to both her family and her friends. She was always willing to help whenever she could, regardless of the circumstances, and not only her family, but also her extended family will sorely miss her.

She is survived by her children Florence Archambault of Newport, Charles E. Wilderman of Okatie, SC, and William D. Wilderman of Moultonboro, NH; her sister, Helga Sampson of Everett, MA; her grandchildren Edith Todd of Little Compton, RI; Jane Luderer of Newport, William Wilderman of Lynn, MA; Nancy Gagne of Copake, NY; John Wilderman of Barrington, NH; and Douglas Wilderman of Warrenville, IL.

She was also the grandmother of the late Charles E. Wilderman, Jr. and Thomas C. Archambault. She was the sister of the late Arthur Anderson, Henry Gouthro and Carl V. Kronman.

She leaves eight great grandchildren, Laura Perkins of Middletown; Eric Todd of Little Compton; Kendra Scott of Syracuse, NY; Susan and Jennifer Wilderman of Candia, NH; Alexander and Connor Wilderman of Barrington, NH; Natalie Wilderman of Warrenville, IL and one great-great granddaughter, Lauren Ferreira of Tiverton RI.

On Sunday, April 17 a memorial service will be conducted at the United Congregational Church on Valley Road in Middletown at 2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to The United Congregational Church, 524 Valley Road, Middletown, RI 02842 or to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary #4487 % Elaine Tobben, 54 Silva Ave, Portsmouth RI 02871 to be used at the Bristol Veterans Home.

Florence M. Sullivan

PORTSMOUTH, RI – CDR. F.M. “SPIKE” Sullivan, 78, of 109 Adams Drive, Portsmouth, RI died Friday, April 8, 2005at home.

He was the husband of Barbara (Baxter) Sullivan.

Born in Andover, MA on February 25, 1927, he was the son of the late John and Elizabeth (Greely) Sullivan.

Spike was a Real Estate Broker and Developer in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut, concentrating his efforts on Aquidneck Island.

CDR. F.M. “SPIKE” SULLIVAN enlisted in the U.S. Navy in October, 1944 and graduated Officers Candidate School in 1955. Commander Sullivan was commissioned in September of 1955. As a commissioned officer, he served aboard the USS McCARD, on the Staff of Commander Destroyer Squadron TWENTY FOUR at the Naval Communications Station in Washington, D.D., as a Commanding Officer of the USS SOMERSWORTH, as Executive Officer of the USS HANK, and on the Staff of Commander Destroyer Squadron TEN. He served as Executive Officer of the Naval Communications Station in San Miguel, Phillipines, and finally as Commanding Officer of the USS WILLIAM R. RUSH, before retiring in 1972. He served in 3 wars over 27 years in the U.S. Navy, including 2 years on loan with the Royal Canadian Navy.

Besides his beloved wife of 53 years, he is survived by his children Michael D. Sullivan of Bristol, RI, Jean Sullivan Ciejka of Portsmouth, RI, Doreen Sullivan Beck of Warren, RI, and Karen Sullivan Day of North Kingstown, RI, his brothers James Sullivan of Greenville, NC, and AJ Sullivan of Farmington, NC, his sister Elizabeth Lawlor of Framingham, MA, eight grandchildren Michael Ciejka and Jennifer Ciejka both of Portsmouth, RI, Brian, Thomas and William Sullivan of Bristol, RI, Alexandra Sullivan and Leland Beck both of Warren, RI, and Christopher Day of North Kingstown, RI.

He was the brother of the late John, Edward, Margaret and Mary Sullivan.

A graveside service will be held Friday, April 15, 2005 at 11:30 am in North Burial Ground, Route 114, Bristol.

Christine Tuttle

Salcha, Alaska – Christine (Baird) Tuttle, 44, of 7005 Coldfoot Court, Salcha, Alaska, formerly of Auburn, MA, died Saturday, July 30, 2005, in Alaska.

She was the wife of Fred Tuttle.

Born in Laconia, NH, on June 21, 1961, she was the daughter of Walter Baird of Willows, CA, and the late Sandra (Almy) Almeida.

Christine had worked as a truck driver for Shaws Market. While living in Idaho, she worked as a farmhand at a dairy farm. She had also worked at the Harvard Laboratory as a Vetrinary Assistant for several years. Christine had also been a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.

Besides her father she is survived by her step father Edward Almeida Jr., of Auburn, MA, a step son Walter Tuttle of Manly, Alaska, two step daughters Megan Tuttle and Michelle Tuttle both of Manly, Alaska, a half brother Edward Almeida III of Auburn, MA, two step brothers Matthew Almeida of Auburn, MA, and Robert Almeida of Tiverton, RI, two sisters Laura Essa of Rochester, NY, and Mary Whitmyer of Oklahoma, and a step sister Karen Almeida of Switzerland.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 13, 2005, at 1:00PM, in Portsmouth Cemetery, Turnpike Avenue, Portsmouth.

Julia H. Leander

MIDDLETOWN, RI - Julia H. Leander, 92, of Forest Farm Assisted Living, Middletown, RI, formerly of 1332 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI, died Sunday, August 14, 2005 at Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence, RI.

Born in Middletown, RI on April 14, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Antone and Ricarda (Soeira) Leander.

Julia served as a domestic for Dr. Arthur Dring and his family for 50 years.

She is survived by her siblings Manuel Leander of Middletown, RI, Mary Paz of Portsmouth, RI, and Albertina Reiter of Newport, RI, and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Joseph Leander, Antone Leander, William Leander and Louise Roderigues.

Her funeral will be held on Thursday, August 18, 2005, at 10:00AM, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport.

Burial will be in St. Columba's Cemetery in Middletown.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, August 17, 2005, from 4-7pm in the funeral home.
