Maurice C. "Mo" Vandal

Maurice C. "Mo" Vandal, died peacefully in his sleep Oct. 16, 2006. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Leo and Eva (Duval) Vandal. A g r a d u a t e of Mount St. Charles A c a d e m y, f o l l o w i n g his discharge from the U.S. Army, he entered the apprentice-training program at Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Co. He was an International Sales Manager for Brown & Sharpe and earned his MBA from the University of Rhode Island at the age of 50.

Mo is survived by his loving wife, Patricia (Miller) Vandal; his three beloved children, Colleen M. Vandal of East Providence, Colonel Thomas S. Vandal, USA, of Bavaria Germany, and John E. Vandal of East Providence; three step-sons, Albert P. Lyons of North Kingstown, Stephen M. Lyons of Hollywood, Calif., and Matthew T. Lyons of Jamestown. He is also survived by six grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Jon- Thomas S. Flamand and James W. Hayes, IV of East Providence, Nicholas A. Vandal of Annapolis, Md., Eric T. Vandal and Stephen C. Vandal of Bavaria, Rachel J. Vandal of East Providence, and a step-grandson, Jeffrey Lyons of North Kingstown. He was the brother of the late Normand O. Vandal of Woonsocket and the former husband of Barbara (Pierson) Vandal of East Providence.

His Funeral will be held Friday, Oct. 20, at 8:45 a.m. from the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mark Church, 60 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Jamestown Emergency Medical Services, P.O. Box 8, Jamestown, RI 02835 or the Jamestown Medical Fund, PO Box 236, will be appreciated.

Visiting hours are Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Irene E. (Caisse) Johnson, 93

Irene E. Johnson, 93, formerly of Leominster, Mass., and a summer resident of Jamestown, died Oct. 3, 2006 in the Oak Lee Nursing Home in Harrisonburg Va., after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was the wife of the late Leonard T. Johnson, who died in 1996.

Born in Leominster on Jan. 19, 1913, a daughter of Dennis and Edith (Menard) Caisse, she had moved to Harrisonburg in 1987.

Mrs. Johnson was a licensed practical nurse and had worked as a charge nurse at the James Manor Nursing Home in Fitchburg, Mass. She was an avid organic gardener and animal advocate. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist church in Fitchburg, Mass.

She was the beloved mother to two daughters, Phyllis L Bedard Johnson of Jamestown and Martha E. Vinglas of Huddleston, Va., and a son, Robert L. Johnson of Lunenburg, Mass. She also leaves her brother, Jerry Caisse, and sister, Louse (Caisse) Fournier, both of Leominster Mass., and four grandchildren, Shari L. Johnson Kamataris of Leominster, Brent R. Johnson of Lunenburg, Robert Vinglas of Chattanooga, Tenn., Richard N. Vinglas, M.D, of Bozeman, Mont., and a greatgrandson, Ian R, Vinglas of Bozeman.

Her funeral was held on Oct. 9 in Leominster, and she was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Leominster.

Stanley P. Brown, 89

Stanley P. Brown, 89, of Newport died peacefully Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2006 at home.

He was the husband of Jeanne M. (Friend) Brown of Newport. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in October.

Born in Fall River, Mass., on Oct. 16, 1917, he was the son of the late Frederick and Anna (White) Brown.

Mr. Brown served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II. He was a graduate of Rogers High School. Mr. Brown was a gifted craftsman and talented cabinetmaker. He was a structural inspector for the U.S. Naval Public Works Department for 26 years, retiring in 1978. Mr. Brown was a former member of the Mason Lodge of Perfection, a member of the Newport Racing Pigeon Club, the Newport County Salt Water Fishing Club, the Bay State Beagle Club, the Little Rhody Beagle Club, and the Newport County Conservation Commission. He was an avid sportsman, fisherman and hunter. He was often seen fishing from several spots on Ocean Drive or training his champion beagles.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Frederick W. Brown and his wife Linda Brown of Jamestown, Jane A. Roach and her husband Albert T. Roach Jr., and Mary B. Sinnott and her husband James Sinnott of Middletown, Stanley P. Brown Jr. and his wife A. Elaine Brown of Portsmouth, Christine E. Pimentel and her husband Chris Pimentel of Portsmouth, and Robert A. Brown and his wife Tricia Brown of Newport. Mr. Brown is also survived by his sister, Roberta Brown Taylor of Newtown Square, Pa., 13 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Brown was the brother of the late Beulah Brown McBee, Frederick Brown, Albert Brown, and Ruth B. Peterson.

A memorial service was held on Friday, Dec. 8, at 10 a.m. in Trinity Church, Queen Anne Square, Newport. Burial was private.

Aram DerManouelian, 67

Aram DerManouelian, 67, of East Shore Road died Thursday, Dec. 7, 2006 at home. He was the beloved husband of Jo-Ann (Farias) DerManouelian.

Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late Hairabed and Azadouhi (Bedrosian) DerManouelian, he lived in Providence and later Warwick, before moving to Jamestown in 1977.

He was founder and president of both American Foam Corporation in Johnston and National Velour Corporation in Warwick for many years. He also was the owner and developer of Portsmouth Industrial Park in Portsmouth and Omni Park in Middletown.

Mr. DerManouelian gave humanitarian support to Armenian causes locally, nationally, and internationally as well as many other charities and organizations.

He was a wild bird enthusiast who collected and bred exotic birds and ducks. He also was a member of the Rhode Island Zoological Society.

In 1968, Mr. DerManouelian joined Orpheus Lodge, now affiliated with Thomas Smith Webb Lodge #43 F.&A.M. of Cranston. An avid yachtsman, he was a member of the Newport Yacht Club and the Newport Chamber of Commerce.

Besides his loving wife, he was the devoted father of Greg DerManouelian of Jamestown, stepfather of Lawrence Camara of Pawtucket and Alfred Camara of Orland, Fla., and the dear brother of Oscar Der- Manouelian of Warwick and the late Michael DerManouelian. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, and grandchildren.

The funeral service was held on Monday in Sts. Vartanantz Armenian Apostolic Church, Providence, followed by interment in North Burial Ground Cemetery, Providence. Ronald Arthur Tilton

Apr. 17, 1937 - Jul. 03, 2006

Ronald Arthur Tilton, 69, of Vero Beach, FL died unexpectedly Monday, July 3, 2006 at the Indian River Memorial Hospital in Vero Beach. Mr. Tilton was born April 17, 1937 in Northampton, MA and moved to Vero Beach 12 years ago, coming from South Deerfield, MA. He had been responsible for the accounts payable department for Coca-Cola in Northampton and Greenfield, MA. Mr. Tilton was a member of the American Orchid Society. Survivors include his wife of 45, years, Diane E. Tilton of Vero Beach. SERVICES: A memorial service will take place at a later date in Massachusetts. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vero Beach Museum of Art, 3001 Riverside Park Drive, Vero Beach, FL 32963.

Mark G. Allen, 57

Mark G. Allen, 57, of Seekonk, Mass., died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006. He was the husband of Paula Grady Allen, and the son of Elisabeth C. Allen of Jamestown, and the late Max G. Allen.

Mark was a graduate of Moses Brown School and Lehigh University. Early in his professional career, he was a bank lending officer at Citibank in New York. In 1978, he was named chief operation officer of M.G. Allen & Associates in Warwick. In 1985, he joined Drexel Burnham Lambert, where he earned the designation as a chartered financial analyst. Most recently, he was first vice president at UBS Financial Services in Providence. He was a member and former treasurer of the Conanicut Yacht Club, a member of the Dumplings Association, Cottrell Pier and Beach Association, the University Club, and RISRA.

Mark was a longtime resident of Jamestown. He loved sailing, and was skilled at single-handed events. In his youth, he was National Rooster Champion. He continued to find great pleasure on his boat, sailing the waters of Narragansett Bay. He loved his dogs, a good martini, time spent with friends, and, above all, he cherished his family. No one could tell a funny story better than Mark.

He was the father of Cameron D. Allen, Virginia A. Allen, and Victoria M. Allen, all of Jamestown, and the late Matthew G. Allen. He was the stepfather of Victoria K. Grady and Shannon E. Grady of Seekonk. He is also survived by his sisters Deborah Allen of Newton, Mass., Jane Barrett of Rehoboth, Mass., Lisa LeFort of Stuart, Fla., his brother Michael Allen of Washington, D.C., his former wife, Pamela Tegarden Allen of Jamestown, as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated today, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m. at St Margaret's Church, 1098 Pawtucket Ave., in Rumford. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Margaret's Church.

Daniel F. Donahue, 65

Daniel F. Donahue, 65, of Reservoir Circle, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2006 at home.

Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Dr. William and Anna (Dolan) Donahue. He lived in Cranston most of his life and resided in Jamestown for the past several years.

Mr. Donahue was an elementary school teacher in the North Providence and Cranston School Systems. He was a graduate of LaSalle Academy and Niagara University. He was an active member of St. Mark Parish in Jamestown, where he served on the parish council. He was a former member of the Jamestown library board. A keen reader and incorrigible talker, Mr. Donahue was known for his entertaining wit. He volunteered for many

years at the Rhode Island Hospital Emergency Room and most recently as an extraordinary minister of Communion at Rhode Island Hospital and the Rhode Island State Prison System.

Mr. Donahue is survived by a brother-in-law, Paul Hutter of Indiana; two nieces, a nephew, several cousins, and many loyal friends. He was the brother of the late Sheila (Donahue) Hutter.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday March 20, 2006 at in St. Mark Church, 60 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown. Burial followed in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to St. Mark Church Building Fund, 60 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown, RI 02835 would be appreciated.

William Winthrop Karl, 56

William Winthrop Karl, 56, of 1 Ranger Court, Jamestown, died Nov. 22, 2006 at home. He was the husband of Kathleen (O'Connor) Karl.

Born in Fitchburg, Mass., on Oct. 7, 1950, he was the son of the late William H. Karl and Isabelle Louise (Lombard) Karl.

Mr. Karl was a software engineer who worked most recently at Pfizer Global Research and Development in Groton, Conn. His true passion was music. He was an accomplished musician and composer. Mr. Karl was a member of the Jamestown Community Chorus, which performed several of his recent works. His choral composition "Prayer for Peace" premiered November 2005 as part of the 'Rhode Island Sings' concert at the Veterans' Memorial Auditorium in Providence. His superb singing voice brought great pleasure and joy to his friends, family, and fellow choir members at St. Paul's Church in Newport. Mr. Karl was an avid photographer. His love of the ocean inspired much of his photography.

Mr. Karl's quiet humor and steadfast spirit inspired and touched many lives. Mr. Karl was a dear and trusted friend who will be greatly missed.

Besides his beloved wife, he leaves four sisters, Elizabeth Knowles of Spicewood, Texas, Marilee Karl-Foubert of Rome, Italy; Ruth Karl of Granite Shoals, Texas; and Beverly Christenson of Fitchburg, Mass.; his nephews, David, Greg and Chris Knowles, Hans, Eric and Sven Christenson, and Carlos Karl; his nieces, Alice Foubert, and Ana and Rose Karl Mr. Karl was a wonderful man whose generosity, kindness, and thoughtfulness will be treasured forever.

His funeral was held Sunday in St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Newport.

Mr. Karl bravely battled cancer and died peacefully surrounded by his loving family. Donations in his memory may be made to the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, c/o Dr. Mary-Ellen Taplin, Suite D 1230, 44 Binney Street, Boston, MA 02115.

Charlotte "Polly" Magruder Buttrick

Charlotte "Polly" Magruder Buttrick, 92, of Jamestown died Nov. 19. 2006 at Newport Hospital after a short illness. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Blenheim Newport in Middletown. She was the wife of the late Duncan Buttrick.

Born in Baltimore, she was the daughter of Commodore Cary W. Magruder and Charlotte England Magruder. She graduated from St. Margaret's School in Waterbury, Conn., and Wellesley College, in Wellesley, Mass. She was a lifelong summer resident of Jamestown and moved permanently to the island in 1972. She spent many years in Fairfield, Conn.,

and Barrington, RI. She served on the boards of St. Mary's Home for Children in Providence, Colonial Dames in Rhode Island, Junior League of Providence, Rhode Island Wellesley Club, Rhode Island Federation of Garden Clubs, Conanicut Yacht Club, and St. Margaret's School. She had been a past president of the Jamestown Garden Club, a deputy chieftain for Rhode Island of the Clan Gregor Society, and chairwoman of Upper Shoreby Hill. She was a member of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. She delivered Meals on Wheels in Jamestown, well into her eighties. She is survived by her children James Buttrick of Boston and Jamestown, and Sherry Buttrick of Charlottesville, Va.

A memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 27, at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew's church. Donations may be made to St. Matthew's Memorial Trust Fund, 87 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown, RI 02835.

John J. Largess, 58

John J. Largess, 58, of East Greenwich died Nov. 6, 2006. He was the husband of Karen (Sosnowy) Largess.

He was the second of eight children of Clifton R. Largess Jr. and Mary (Curran) Largess. Born in Wakefield, he spent his formative years in Jamestown, which always remained a special place for him.

He grew up loving water sports. A graduate of Holy Cross College, he served as a U.S. Navy officer in Vietnam, and then worked in banking in Providence before becoming a stockbroker. He was an avid reader. For many years, he was part of the "JBA," a weekly pickup basketball game among friends, jokingly called the Jamestown Basketball Association, and took an annual Western snow skiing trip with one of his closest friends. In the last 10 years, he became an avid bicyclist, enjoying riding with others and proudly completing several "century," rides of 100 miles.

He is survived by two daughters, Noel Largess, a senior at Syracuse University, and Alexandra Largess, a freshman at Penn State University, whom he loved dearly.

John is survived by his parents,;his brothers, Clifton R. III, Mark, Matt, and Luke; and his sisters, Mary Lee and Cathy Woodward. He was predeceased by his brother Dan.

He also is survived by countless friends.

The funeral was held Saturday. Burial was private. A memorial Mass will be held for him on Friday, Nov. 24, 2006, 11 a.m. at St. Mark Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Largess Children College Fund, 4 Remy Place, East Greenwich, RI 02818 will be appreciated.

Dr. Vincent I. MacAndrew Sr., 86

Dr. Vincent I. MacAndrew Sr., 86, of Grinnell Street, formerly of Dean Street, Cranston, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007 at South Kingstown Rehabilitation Center, West Kingston. He was the husband of Kathryn Marie (Horan) MacAndrew for 50 years.

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Joseph V. and Mary V. (McManus) MacAndrew. Dr. MacAndrew was an urologist for over 40 years before retiring in 1997. He served on the faculty of Brown University Medical School and was chief of staff at St. Joseph Hospital and Our Lady of Fatima Hospital. He was a graduate of Cranston High School, Class of 1938. After completing his undergraduate work at Providence College, he earned a medical degree from Jefferson University Medical School in Pennsylvania. During World War II, he served in the Navy Medical Corps with the rank of lieutenant.

After the war, he completed a residency in pathology at Rhode Island Hospital, and went on to general surgery and urology at the University of Pittsburgh and affiliated hospitals.

In 1951, he was instrumental in the initiation of the urology residency program at Rhode Island Hospital, where he served as associate surgeon in the Department of Urology.

As an alumnus of Providence College, Dr. MacAndrew was actively involved with his alma mater. In 1958, he established the Joseph V. MacAndrew Award, given to a senior varsity athlete of extraordinary academic standing. In 1980, he received the Mal Brown Award, the highest accolade that Providence College confers upon an alumnus. He was a member of the Boston Clover Club and the Cranston Hall of Fame. He served as a trustee at the Immaculate Conception parish for nearly 40 years.

Besides his wife, he is survived by five children, Vincent I. Mac- Andrew Jr., MD, of East Greenwich, Joseph T. MacAndrew of Westerly, Deirdre M. Kentley of Medway, Mass., William K. Mac- Andrew of Coventry, and M. Julia Iacono of Narragansett. He was the grandfather of 11. Dr. MacAndrew was the brother of Raymond N. MacAndrew, MD, of Warwick and the late John, Joseph, Rose and Antonette MacAndrew of Edgewood.

The funeral was held Saturday from the Nardolillo Funeral Home, South County Chapel, where a Mass of Christian was celebrated. Burial followed in St. Marks Cemetery in Jamestown. Memorial donations can be made to Providence College Office of Institutional Advancement (Scholarship Fund) St. Martin Hall, 549 River Ave., Providence RI 02918.

Baxter Venable, 76

Baxter Venable, 76, of Lawrenceville, N.J., a longtime summer resident of Jamestown died Friday, Jan. 5, 2007 at the Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in Hamilton, N.J.

Born in Lakewood Ohio, he was an acquisitions editor for the D. Van Nostrand Publishing Company in Princeton and then the W.B. Saunders Publishing Company in Philadelphia. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, where he was a deacon and elder.

He was a summer resident of Jamestown for 30 years.

A graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army with the 66th Counter-Intelligence Corps during the Korean War.

Son of the late James VI and Ann Harden Venable; he is survived by his wife, Patricia Lengel Venable; a son and daughter-inlaw, Mark and Kristin Venable of Denver, Colo.; a daughter and sonin law, Amy and Brian Ciuffreda of Lawrenceville, N.J.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Joan Venable of New Bern, N.C., Catherine and Richard Cooper of New Bern, N.C.; four grandchildren, Adam and Erica Venable, Nicholas and Katie Ciuffreda; and two nieces, Kate Cooper Metts and Jennifer Cooper.

A memorial service was held Jan. 8 at the Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville with the Rev. Jeffrey Vamos pastor officiating. Interment was private.

Memorial contributions may be made to Memorial Fund of The Presbyterian Church of Lawrenceville, 2688 Main St., Lawrenceville, NJ 08648 or the Cancer Institute of New Jersey at Hamilton, One Hamilton Health Place, Hamilton, NJ 08690.

Nicholas Coste, 71

Nicholas Coste, 71, of Flourtown, Pa., died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 at his home. He was the husband of Anne Hord Coste for 42 years.

Mr. Coste grew up in Jamestown. He attended St. Michael's School in Newport and graduated from the Kent School. He went to Penn State University.

Mr. Coste was employed as a salesman for Mechanics Choice/ Barnes Distribution for 42 years. A former vestry member, Mrs. Coste was involved with St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Chestnut Hill, Pa. He served on the Alumni Council at the Kent School, and served on the boards of Saint Francis Academy and the Philadelphia Cricket Club. He was a member of the Army and Navy Club and the First Troop Philadelphia City Calvary.

He was an avid golfer.

Besides his wife, Mr. Coste is survived by his daughters, Suzanne L. Coste, Allison C. Romig, and Sarah P. Coste; a sister, Betsey C. Outerbridge; a brother, Paul Coste, and grandchildren, Austin S. Romig and Cary J. Romig. Mr. Coste was predeceased by his brother, Pierre Coste, and his parents, Paul and Dorothy P. Coste.

Services will be on Saturday, Jan. 13, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Chestnut Hill.
