Gerald M. Gallagher, 66

Gerald M. Gallagher, 66, of Bristol, died Jan. 11, 2007, at his winter home in Boca Grande, Fla., after a year of illness. He was the husband of Sigrid Schoenebeck Gallagher.

Born Jan. 6, 1941 in New York City, he was a son of the late Stephen L. and G. Constance Murty Gallagher. Raised in Scarsdale, N.Y., Gerry traveled the world in sales management for the 3M Company and lived in California, Hong Kong, Hawaii, Belgium, Chicago, St. Paul, and Southborough, Mass., as well as the last nine years in Bristol.

He leaves four step-children, Jessica Verniers, Yuri Verniers, Keleigh Kaufman, and Michelle Mendoza, and 10 grandchildren; a sister, Margery-Jane and her husband James H. Connelly, of Rancho Bernardo, Cal.; and two brothers, Stephen L. Jr. and his wife Sandra Gallagher of Portland, Ore. and W. Gregory Gallagher, of New York City.

Gerry is also survived by his mother-in-law, Marianne Schoenebeck of Jamestown; sisters-in-law Sabine and her husband William Dinsmoor of Anacortes, Wash., and Maire-Luise and her husband Gregory Hedberg of Jamestown. Survivors also include an aunt, Mrs. Thomas A. (Ella) Gallagher, and cousins, Nancy O'Neill, Larry Gallagher, and Dennis Gallagher.

Gerry attended New York State Maritime Academy in 1959 and received his bachelor's degree in 1962 from Bethany College in West Virginia, where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. He served on active duty with the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1966 and in the Navy Reserve from 1966 to1983, retiring as commander. He was employed by the 3M Company from 1967 until his retirement on December 31, 2006.

Gerry was an avid sailor and golfer. He was a member of the Waikiki Yacht Club, Honolulu, Hawaii and a member of various golf clubs around the world. Locally, he was an associate of Montaup Country Club, Portsmouth, and played in the Swansea Country Club golf league.

A funeral service will be held at the Chapel of Hope, 1172 Vaughan St., Naval Base Newport, today, Thursday, Jan. 25, at 11 a.m. Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations to RI Hospital Cancer Research, P.O. Box H, Providence, RI 02901 would be appreciated. Please use Naval Training Station Road ( West end of Admiral Kalbfus Rd. near rotary), Newport, for civilian vehicles attending Gerry's Mass.

Eileen M. Pryor, 87

Eileen M. (Devine) Pryor, 87, died Jan. 18, 2007 at St. Elizabeth Home in East Greenwich. She was the wife of the late Lt. Col. Richard E. Pryor, a retired Marine lieutenant colonel.

A daughter of the late Joseph P. and Viola (Warnock) Devine, she had been a Jamestown resident for 12 years before moving to East Greenwich in 2004. Mrs. Pryor was a communicant of St. Mark Church.

She is survived by two children, Mary Ann Liberati of Jamestown and Allen Richard Pryor of Henderson, Nev.; one sister, Ann Sherlock of Warwick; and four grandchildren, Cristina, Peter, Michael and Cara Liberati. She was the sister of the late Clare McElroy and Joseph Devine.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday in St. Mark Churchin Jamestown. Burial followed at the RI Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.

Memorial contributions to St. Elizabeth Home, One Saint Elizabeth Way, East Greenwich, RI 02818 will be appreciated.

Theresa A. Rybar, 93

Theresa A. "Tessie" Rybar, 93, of Seaside Drive, formerly of Bradenton, Fla., and the Love Lane section of Warwick, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2007 at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late John Rybar.

Born in Bridgeport, Conn., a daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Hudicek) Buypal, she had been a resident of Jamestown for 36 years, wintering in Bradenton, Fla., for 24 years.

Mrs. Rybar is remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She had a great devotion to her family and friends and truly enjoyed cooking and entertaining.

She had been a founding member of the former Hillsgrove PTA and an avid bowler. She took great joy in crafts, such as the creation of centerpieces and mirrors adorned with rosettes made from coquina shells that she gathered in Florida. She also crocheted and knitted many beautiful items. She once made a grand afghan of the bicentennial flag in 1976 for her grandson. These labors of love personify Theresa's genuine altruistic nature.

She is survived by her daughter, Maryann B. Duggan of Jamestown; her brother, Frank Buypal Jr. of Shelton, Conn.; her grandchildren, Mark C. Duggan and his wife, Suzanne of Palm City, Fla.; Hilary E. Brunelle and her husband, Stephen of Ashland, Mass.; John M. Duggan of Jamestown and great-granddaughter, Shannon N. Duggan, also of Palm City. She was the sister of the late Margaret Giannatasio, Mary Kekacs, Elizabeth Burum, Jennie Hmursik, Martha Buypal, Bertha Buypal, and David Buypal.

Her funeral was Monday from the Russell J. Boyle and Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road, Warwick.Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery, East Greenwich.

Elizabeth Kane, 96

Elizabeth (Larzelere) Kane, 96, of Jamestown died Jan. 30, 2007 at Newport Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of the late Walter Dubois Larzelere and Katharine Sterrett Creswell. She attended Agnes Irwin School in Philadelphia and was later schooled in France. While in Philadelphia, she sang with the D'Oily Carte Choir and the Vox-Humana Choral.

Prior to living in Jamestown, she lived in Devon, Pa., and Plum Beach, RI. She was a former member of the Conanicut Yacht Club the Dunes Club in Narragansett, and the Acorn Club in Philadelphia. She was an avid bridge player and gardener. She was a member of the Kingston Congregational Church.

Mrs. Kane is survived by her three children and their spouses: Braden Bayard Kane Jr. and Donna Linton Kane of Jamestown, Katharine Kane Damon and C. Francis (Frank) Damon of Honolulu, Hawaii, and Nancy Kane Fleming and Charles C. (Skip) Fleming, III of Naples, Fla. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Her funeral services will be private.

Anthony J. Faria, 75

Anthony Joseph Faria, 75, of Cardinal Drive, North Kingstown, formerly of Jamestown, died Feb. 11, 2007 at Village House in Newport after a long battle with A l z h e i m - er's. He was the husband of Diane Faria.

His entire career was in the paint industry; 20 years with Sherwin- Williams as district manager and 17 years with Samuel Cabot, Inc. as vice president of sales and marketing.

Born in Jamestown, a son of the late Antone and Louise (DeSoito) Faria, he was married to the former Diane Gagne for 50 years. He graduated from the former De La Salle Academy in Newport and Bryant University. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Faria was a former board member of National Paint Company Executives and an advisor to the Painters Decorators and Contractors Association of America.

A former president and vicepresident of the Jamestown Town Council, he served on the Democratic Town Committee, the Recreation Board, The Waterfront Commission, the Highway Committee, the Conservation Committee, the town Buildings Committee, and police department committee. He was a former member of the Jamestown Community Chorus, the All Guy's Choir, the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, and the Holy Ghost Society.

He coached Jamestown Little League and youth basketball. He was a past president of the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum and member of Beavertail Advisory Board.

Mr. Faria was an avid sailor, tennis player, golfer, hiker, birder, and along with his wife Diane, a world traveler.

He will be remembered for his gregarious personality, kindness to others, sense of humor, and beautiful smile.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two sons, Anthony Faria, Jr. of North Kingstown and Daniel J. Faria of Middletown; a sister, Mary Larson of Alto Loma, Calif.; and four beloved grandchildren, Ansley, Brendan, Andrew, and Patrick Faria.

He was the brother of the late Thomas Faria of Tennessee and Louise Richardson of Jamestown.

Visiting hours at the Fagin- Quinn Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Rd., North Kingstown, are today, Feb. 15, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Mr. Faria's Funeral will be held tomorrow, Feb. 16, at 10:45 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at noon in St. Mark Church, 60 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Assn., 245 Waterman St., Providence, RI 02906 will be appreciated.

James R. Filkins, 58

James R. Filkins, 58, of Bayberry Road died peacefully at Brigham & Women's/Dana - Farber Cancer C e n t e r , B o s t o n , Mass., on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2007.

Jim was an active member of the comm u n i t y presently serving on the School Committee. He was also the current administrator of Jamestown Emergency Medical Services, and a member of both the Jamestown Community Chorus and the Jamestown's Men's Chorus.

Prior to moving to Jamestown, he lived in Sterling, Mass. He was a retired educator, having been Art Department chairman for 20 years at Algonquin Regional High School, Northboro, Mass.

Jim is survived by his wife, Agnes; son, Keith; brother John; and sister Rebecca.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held at a later date. Burial will be private.

Margaret Bentley, 85

Margaret "Peg" Bentley, 85, of Newport, formerly of Barefoot Bay, Fla.,and a longtime Jamestown resident died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2007.

She was the daughter of the late Charlie and Annie (Cahir) Ryan and the "pitiful old widow" of Bob Gillerin and Walter Bentley.

Peg was an LPN who worked at Kent Hospital for three years and South County Hospital for 22 years before retiring and moving to Florida, where she worked at nursing for seven years. She was a member of the Barefoot Bay Poetry Club and volunteered for the Sebastian Medical Center and many support groups. Peg was also a beloved friend and patron of Winn Dixie and Pool 2 of Barefoot Bay.

She is survived by two sons, Ted Gillerin of Jamestown and Tim Bentley of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter, Beth Reynolds of Newport; and two stepchildren, Bruce "Goose" Bentley of West Greenwich and Lynne Page of Cranston.

Peg was the grandmother of the late Ryan Reynolds. She is also survived by eight other grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please bestow an act of kindness on another person.

Her funeral was held Feb. 10, at St. Mark's Church in Jamestown.

Isabel Perry Young, 91

Isabel Perry Young, 91, formerly of Jamestown passed away peacefully in Las Vegas, Nev., on Jan. 27, 2007. She was the wife of the late Joe Young and the widow of the late Robert Howe.

Born and raised in Jamestown, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Perry and moved to Las Vegas in 1965. She leaves her children, Pat Howe Butcher, Robert Howe, Elizabeth Howe Schultz, Thomas Young, and Charlie Young, all of Las Vegas. She was the sister of the late Joe and Tom Perry, Helen Perry Sullivan, and left one living sister, Mary Perry Stone.

Isabel was born and raised on Washington Street in Jamestown and Many times as teenagers, Isabel and her sister swam from Jamestown to Newport.

Funeral services took place in Las Vegas on Feb. 5, 2007.

Thomas J. Vieira

Thomas J. Vieira, 78, of North Providence died Feb. 13, 2007 at Berkshire Place Nursing Home. He was the husband of Dorothy R. (Montella) Vieira.

Born in Jamestown, he was a son of the late Antone and Rufina (Rose) Vieira. He had lived in North Providence for 49 years.

Thomas was a parts department manager at BIF, where he worked for 29 years. He then worked for ALCO Engineering and Thielsch Engineering, retiring in 1994.

A U.S. Navy Veteran of Korea, Thomas was a member of the USS Cabot Association. He was a volunteer for the Lymansville Crime Prevention Storefront and also a member of the Dillon Council Knights of Columbus.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Thomas M. Vieira and his wife, Stephanie, of North Providence and Robert J. Vieira of Conway, N.H.; two grandchildren, Matthew and Mitchell Vieira; two sisters, Helen Pineau of Newport and Ann Busse of Middletown; and a brother, Peter Vieira of Connecticut. He was brother of the late Mary Donahue and Frank Vieira.

Visitation and funeral will be held Saturday from7:30 to 8:30 a.m. in the Robbins Funeral Home, 2251 Mineral Spring Ave., North Providence with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 9 a.m. in St. Thomas Church, Fruit Hill Avenue, in Providence. Burial will follow in R.I. Veterans Cemetery, Exeter.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Parkinson's Disease Assn., PO Box 41659, Providence, RI 02940.

Edward J. Fairfield, 87

Edward J. Fairfield, 87, of Starboard Avenue, died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2007 at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of the late Margaret M. Kelly.

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Richard and Annie (Donahue) Fairfield. He was a graduate of St. Michael's Catholic School.

He was a licensed plumber for the University of Rhode Island for 19 years before retiring. He was member of the State of RI Employee Retirees Union. Mr. Fairfield was a communicant of St. Mark Church.

He leaves a son and his wife, Earl and Kathleen Fairfield of Cranston; a daughter, Diane Fairfield of Jamestown; a sister, Virginia Westerman of Warwick; and a granddaughter Caitlin Fairfield of Cranston. He was the brother of the late Dorothy Langlois, Rita McGinness, Louise, Earl and Richard Fairfield.

His funeral was held Wednesday from the Fagan-Quinn Funeral Home, North Kingstown, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mark Church, Jamestown. Burial was in St. Mark Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Hope Alzheimer's Center, 25 Brayton Avenue, Cranston, RI 02920.

Edward W. Day, Jr., 76

Edward W. Day, Jr., 76, of Conanicus Avenue, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2007 at Roger William Medical Center. He was the former husband of Ann P. (Torphy) Day.

Born in Cranston, a son of the late Honorable Edward W. and Madeline (Reagan) Day, he lived in Cranston most of his life, summering in Plum Beach and retiring in Jamestown.

Day served in the US Navy and received degrees from Brown University and Boston College Law School. He was an Attorney with Gardner, Sawyer, Cottam, Gates, Day & Sloan before retiring. In the 1960s, he was the Cranston City Solicitor. He was on the Ethics Committee for the Rhode Island Bar Association. He was an active member of the Jamestown Community Garden Co-Op. He was a communicant of St. Mark Church.

Besides his former wife he leaves his three children, Edward W. Day, III of Westerly, Maria Day Hyde and Ann P. Moone both of North Kingstown; a sister, Martha Quinn of West Warwick; nine grandchildren, Patricia, Madeline, Katherine, Jennelle, Peter, Mikhail, Mason, Faith and Gabriella and one great-grandson, Elijah. He was the brother of the late Virginia Schortman and Madeline "Midge" Cuzzone.

His Funeral was held March 3 from the FAGAN-QUINN Funeral Home, 825 Boston Neck Road, North Kingstown. A Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mark Church followed. Burial was in RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Jamestown Community Garden, C/O Bob & Lynda Sutton, 28 Rosemary Lane, Jamestown, RI 02835 will be appreciated.

Alexander P. Bates, Jr., 89

Alexander P. Bates, Jr., 89, of Beach Avenue, died Friday, March 2, 2007 at home. He was the husband of the late Louise W. (Welch) Bates. He was a Marine Engineer and a Naval Architect for over 40 years, retiring in 1985.

Born in West Greenwich, the son of the late Alexander P. Bates, Sr., and Emily M. (Bucklin) Bates, Bates was a graduate of M.I.T. Class of 1938, a member of the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers, The Audubon Society, and The Nature Conservancy. He was a communicant of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church and was a member of the church choir. He volunteered in the parish thrift shop.

He is survived by two children, Susan B. Rasmussen and her husband Charles L. of Cranston and Geoffrey J. Bates and his wife Marcia A. of Derry, NH. He was the grandfather of two and greatgrandfather of three.

A Requiem Eucharist will be celebrated Saturday, March 10, 2007 at 2 p.m. at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, Jamestown, to which relatives and friends are invited. Burial will be private. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory to St. Matthew's Episcopal Church, 87 Narragansett Ave., Jamestown, RI, 02835 would be appreciated.
