Albert H. Page Jr., 72

On Sunday, August 16, Block Island lost a dear friend. Albert H. Page Jr. (Albie) passed away unexpectedly on the shores of the island that he loved. He was born in 1937, in Providence, lived in Ashaway and graduated from Westerly High School in 1955. He moved to Connecticut, and was united in marriage to his beloved wife Phyllis Merluzzo in 1958.

He was a long-time summer resident at Payne’s Dock, aboard his boat Miss Nancy Hanks, and his Payne’s Dock boating family will miss him greatly. He built a fish-cleaning table for the dock, and was often seen expertly filleting doormat fluke, and sharing his expertise with eager neophytes. A very spicy Bloody Mary, a freshly caught fluke for supper, and a Red Sox game, won of course, by the Red Sox, would end a perfect day for Albie and friends.

Albie wore many hats during his life. He grew up on a farm and enjoyed sharing “The Swamp-Yankee” stories of his early years. He was later employed at Barston Transportation and The RB Greene Company. From 1968 to 1996 he was co-owner of the North Eastern Connecticut Truck Sales, and E. C. Truck Sales in Franklin, Conn. His friends also suspect that he may have worn a cowboy hat as well at one time, as he often exclaimed, “This is not my first rodeo.”

He served his country as a member of the 82nd Airborne out of Fort Bragg, and was a member of The Greater Hartford Airborne. Albie was also a member of The Danielson Elks, United UCT, The Knights of Columbus, and The Norwich Power Squadron, where he taught Engine Maintenance.

Predeceased by his parents, Albert and Sheridan Page, and a brother, Charles Page, Albie leaves his wife Phyllis, daughter and son in law Nancy and Bill Gaspar, and his greatest joy in life, his grandchildren, Page and Will.

Albie loved all sports, and was an avid golfer, fisherman, swimmer and boater. A devoted Red Sox fan, he eagerly followed his team, and most nights could be found in front of the television cheering them on with friends.

With a twinkle in his eye, and a terrific sense of humor, Albie brightened the day of all who encountered him. Always ready with a story to tell, he also loved the fine art of leg-pulling, with a stretch of the truth, and then a hearty laugh. If he didn’t have a story, he simply invented one, and would laugh and marvel at his prowess. He had a joke for every occasion, and no one could tell one better.

Albie was truly a Block Island original. The island, his Payne’s Dock boating family, and all who knew him, are richer for having shared in his life.

Katherine V. Maher, 84

Katie Maher, formerly of Huntington, N.Y., Block Island and Clearwater, Fla., aka “one of the Shea Sisters,” died January 27, 2009 at the home of her sister, Lillian English, in Syosset, N.Y. Block Island remained in her heart, as she celebrated her 84th birthday and 75th summer surrounded by family and friends last summer.

Maher was born in New York City on July 21, 1924, the daughter of John and Lillian Shea. She first arrived on Block Island at age 9 with her mother and younger sister Lillian.

Her mother, with daughters in tow, came to the island every summer and rented different homes: the Oceanview Cottage (subsequently the Shamrock Inn), the Bellevue on High Street, the Triplers’, Brown Cottage on the Neck, and finally with Shirley Smith on Ocean Avenue. In 1962 Maher’s mother purchased the Dunn Property on Ocean Avenue and named the home “Chez Bon Repos” — house of good rest — and that it has been to many.

Maher’s sister Lillian recalls their youthful, carefree days spent on the beach on Block Island and evenings spent with friends at local hangouts: Pier 76, Yellow Kittens, Smuggler’s Cove and Dead Eye Dick’s, listening and dancing to the entertainment of Billy Stubbs and others. There were the dinners at Ballard’s, Finn’s, the Spring House, brunch at the Kittens, clambakes on state beach and fishing on the Act 1. Mostly Katie was happiest when the house was full of family. Although later in life she was not able to join them at the beach or clamming or walking the trails of the island, she took great pride and joy in the stories of the day as evening set in.

She enjoyed getting her hair done by Mark Koch at the Beachcomber, as well as the rides to and fro from Vin McAloon. She also thought the world of her neighbors and enjoyed watching the world go by from the porch of Chez Bon Repos.

Maher grew up and worked in and around New York and the Bronx. She was with the New York Telephone Company as a sales representative for 24 years. In 1967 she married Robert F. “Bob” Maher whom she loved dearly (for what else could explain her reason for marrying a man recently widowed with seven children ages 3 to 18?)

Katie Maher was the cherished wife of the late Robert, loving stepmother of Robert (Jody), William (Debbie), Timothy, James (Kathy), Chip (Gray), Jane (Ellen), Matt (Ellen); beloved grandmother of Scott, Ryan, Christian, Kieran, Kelsey, Whitten, Casey, Jennifer, Colleen and Jimmy Jr; devoted sister of Lillian English, dear niece of Josephine Metz and cousin of Cecilia, Dick, Bobby and their families.

A wake was held for Katie at the M.A. Connell Funeral Home, followed by a mass at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church in Huntington N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Block Island Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department P.O Box 781, Block Island, R.I. 02807, attention Mike Lofaro, would be appreciated.
