William E. St. Ours III

Kickemuit M.S. graduate,

Special Olympics athlete

William E. St. Ours III, 15, of 54 Barker Ave., Warren, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence. He was a son of William E. St. Ours Jr. and the late Renee (Turner) St. Ours.

He lived in Bristol most of his life before moving to Warren a year ago.

He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church. He was a graduate of Kickemuit Middle School, where he received the Principal’s Spirit Award, the School’s Spirit Award and the Art Award. He was a Special Olympics athlete.

He leaves a stepmother, Tammy Perras; a brother, Nathan A. St. Ours of Warren; two sisters, Courtney R. and Brittney A. St. Ours, both of Warren; a grandfather, William E. St. Ours Sr. of Warren; a great-grandmother, Alice (Paiva) Osborne of Bristol; two aunts, Rachel Miranda of East Providence and Alicia Eastwood of Bristol; and his devoted friend, Thomas Burns of Bristol. He was a brother of the late Jesse A. St. Ours and a grandson of the late Dolores (Martin) St. Ours and Jesse A. and Emily (Osborne) Turner.

Funeral services are Friday, May 31, at 8 a.m. from Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Wood Street. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Chestnut Street. Visiting hours are 4 to 8 p.m. today, May 30.

Alice D’Alessio

Funeral services for Alice (Landoch) D’Alessio were held Friday, May 24, from Sansone Funeral Home, with a concelebrated Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. The Rev. James J. Verdelotti was the celebrant and the Rev. Michael Colello concelebrated and was the homilist for the Mass. Laurie Bowers and Karen Sykes were the readers. Her sister, Jane Pavent, and brother-in-law and Chris Anderson presented offertory gifts.

Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where Father Verdelotti read the committal prayers. Serving as pallbearers were Jerry Boiani, Michael L. Boiani, Jason P. Leary, Kenneth L. LeComte and Eric J. Anderson.

Mrs. D’Alessio of Sherman Avenue died Thursday, May 16, 2002, at home. She was the wife of the late Edward A. D’Alessio and the late John Laba.

William C. Benn
World War II veteran,
former Bristol resident

William Charles Benn, 81, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., died Wednesday, May 22, 2002, at Palm Garden of Port St. Lucie. He was the husband of Josephine Benn.

Born in Pawtucket, he lived in Port St. Lucie for 15 years after moving there from Bristol.

He was a project engineer with the U.S. Defense Department in the South Pacific for 35 years prior to his retirement.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps with the 23rd Bomb Squadron during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with two clusters, Purple Heart, and Presidential Unit Citation. Mr. Benn was a Pearl Harbor survivor.

He was of the Episcopal faith and was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association, the Masonic Lodge in Chicopee Falls, Mass., the Shrine Temple in Honolulu, the VFW in Fort Pierce, Fla., and the American Vets in Bristol.

He leaves a daughter, Cynthia A. Benn-Evans and her husband, Michael, of Palm Springs, Fla.; four sons, William G. Benn and wife Kathleen of Pawtucket, Thomas R. Benn of Lake Worth, Fla., Joseph A. Benn and wife Charlotte of O’Fallen, Ill., and Lee P. Benn and wife Pamela of Bristol, and nine grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

There will be a memorial service at a later date. Those who wish may contribute to a veterans’ group of their choice in his memory.

Arrangements are by Aycock Funeral Home, Port St. Lucie.

Mabel DePalma

Funeral services for Mabel (Lopes) DePalma were held Friday, May 10, from Sansone Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth’s Church.

The Rev. Thomas J. Ferland was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Offertory gifts were presented by Mrs. DePalma’s son and daughter-in-law, Anthony and Ann DePalma.

Burial followed in North Burial Ground, where Father Ferland read the committal prayers. The eulogist was grandson Kenneth A. Ambrose. Serving as pallbearers were Kenneth A. and Christopher K. Ambrose, Dean J. and Alan A. DePalma, John A. Sicignano and Drew Pansa.

Mrs. DePalma, 83, of 168 Franklin St. died Tuesday, May 7, 2002, at Desilets Nursing Home in Warren. She was the wife of Anthony "Brush" DePalma.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio 44720.

Gerald E. Souza
Air Force veteran

owned J&J Auto Sales

Gerald E. "Jerry" Souza, 73, of Stuart, Fla., died at home on Monday, May 20, 2002. He was the husband of Georgianna J. Souza. They had been married for 51 years.

Born in Fall River, he had lived in Florida for the past 15 years, moving to Stuart from Westport.

Mr. Souza owned and operated J&J Auto Sales & Service in Westport. Previously, he was a materials coordinator for National Airlines.

He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Souza was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and Riverland Boaters Club in Stuart.

Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Diane K. Souza of Stuart and Patricia A. Sherrard of Palm City, Fla.; a son, Gerald W. Souza of Westport; a sister, Deltha Vieira of Ocala, Fla.; three brothers, Gilbert Souza of Westport, Robert Souza of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and David Souza of Fall River, and six grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were by Forest Hills Funeral Home in Palm City, Fla.

Irene M. Hague
Grandmother of ½ve
lived here for 51 years

Irene M. (Tierney) Hague, 84, of Brookwood Drive, and formerly of O Drive, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. She was the wife of the late Ernest C. Hague.

Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late John J. and Ethel (Thornley) Tierney, she spent her youth in Fall River and was a resident of Westport for 51 years.

Mrs. Hague enjoyed gardening and was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Fall River.

She leaves two daughters, Judith A. Bedard and Kathleen M. Caroselli, both of Westport; a son, Jeffrey E. Hague of Westport; and five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Ethel C. Taylor, Ellen Destremps and John J. Tierney Jr.

Arrangements were by Cherry Place Home of Waring-Sullivan in Fall River.

Wilfred Desrosiers
Retired machinist,
World War II veteran

Wilfred Desrosiers, 80, of Tickle Road died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. He was the husband of the late Marguerite (Chasse) Desrosiers.

Born in Fall River on Feb. 17, 1922, he was a son of the late Edmond W. Desrosiers and Victoria (Gosselin) Desrosiers Lindsey.

Mr. Desrosiers was a machinist for 30 years for B.I.F. in Warwick, R.I., until his retirement. He was previously employed at the Davis Mill in Fall River as a printer.

Mr. Desrosiers was a World War II Army veteran.

In his youth, he enjoyed softball, bowling and fishing. He also played in a country western band.

He leaves three daughters, Jacqueline Gallant, who cared for him at her home in Westport; Pauline Desrosiers of Fall River and Renee Russo of Warwick; two sisters, Lillian Givens of Fall River and Anna Gagne of Rhode Island; a brother, George Desrosiers of Somerset; and four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 28, from Boulé Funeral Home in Fall River. A Mass was held in Our Lady of Grace Church in Westport.

Rose Manchester
Mother of ½ve
was devoted to family

Rose (Antunes) Manchester, 65, of Fall River died unexpectedly on Thursday, May 23, 2002, at home. She was the wife of Kenneth Manchester of Westport.

Born in Fall River, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Maria (Mendes) Antunes. She had been a resident of Fall River since 1987.

Mrs. Manchester was employed by Griffin Manufacturing of Fall River until her retirement in 2001. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

In addition to her husband, she leaves five daughters, Denise R. Manchester, Brenda L. Messier, Lynne M. Robidoux and Rochelle Johnson of Fall River and Melanie A. Mattos of Somerset; a brother, Antone Antunes of Westport; five sisters, Delia Cangiano, Emilia Andrade and Mary Perry of Westport, Connie Dubois of Dartmouth and Adeline Morris of Bristol; five grandchildren, Jason and Sarah Manchester, Heather Robidoux, Cheyannah Messier and Jada Mattos; and two great grandchildren, Kayne and Kohl Theberge. She was a sister of the late Alice Moore.

A service was held Tuesday, May 28, at St. George’s Church. Interment was in Beech Grove Cemetery. Arrangements were by Potter Funeral Home.

Helen J. Trueblood
Artist, poet, was director
of nursery school

Helen J. (Smith) Trueblood, 94, of Westport Point died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at the Adams House after a brief illness. She was the wife of Lorman C. Trueblood.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., the daughter of the late Louis W. and Laura E. (Wilkins) Smith, she was a resident of Westport for more than 30 years.

Mrs. Trueblood graduated from Smith College in 1931. After studying painting in Paris, she moved to Washington, D.C., and enrolled in the Studio House, an art school associated with the Phillips Collection.

She was employed as director of the Cooperative Nursery School in Montgomery County, Md., until her retirement in 1965.

Mrs. Trueblood was a member of the Westport Art Group. She was known for her landscape and figure drawings and watercolor paintings.

She was involved with a local poetry group and wrote numerous poems.

Besides her husband, she leaves three daughters, Emily Trueblood of New York City, Jocelyn Trueblood of Tappan, N.Y., and Abigail Trueblood of Evanston, Ill., and four grandchildren and a nephew. She was the sister of the late J. Moreau Smith Jr.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by Potter Funeral Home in Westport.

Elizabeth H. Phillips
Leaves a son
in Barrington

Elizabeth H. Phillips, 90, of Bass River, Mass., died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Presidential Oaks in Concord, N.H. She was the wife of the late Earle G. Phillips.

Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Herbert and Rebecca (Morton) Holway, she was a graduate of Barnstable High School in Hyannis, Mass., and the Swain School of Art in New Bedford. An artist, she designed and hand-painted candles for the Colonial Candle Company in Hyannis; she was a nature lover and enjoyed the ocean.

She leaves a son, Earle G. Phillips Jr. of Barrington; a daughter, Gail Heil of Contoocook, N.H.; four granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held Wednesday, May 29, in the Federated Church in Hyannis. Burial followed in Bayview Cemetery in Sandwich, Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that you give your time and love to the elderly.

Arrangements were by the Bennett Funeral Home in Concord, N.H.
