Antone V. Correia
Retired caretaker
of Jencks estate

Antone V. Correia, 98, of Barker Avenue died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Grace Barker Nursing Home. He was the husband of Marcia (Nunes) Correia to whom he was married since 1931.

Born in Faial, Açores, he was a son of the late Antone V. and Maria (Andrade) Correia.

Mr. Correia was the caretaker for the Robert Jencks estate in Seekonk for over 40 years before retiring.

Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, George M. Correia of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Anthony H. Correia of Addison, Vt.; a brother, Alfred V. Correia of Tiverton, and six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was a brother of the late Joseph, Joaquim and Manuel Correia.

His funeral will be held today, May 29, at 8 a.m. from Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main St., with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church. Burial will be in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.

Lucy Elsoffer
Enjoyed reading poetry
aloud, playing the piano

Lucy Elsoffer, 48, of 69 Wood St. died Monday, May 20, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital.

She grew up in Barrington and attended Barrington schools.

Ms. Elsoffer enjoyed poetry and music. She played the piano and often read poetry aloud to her friends at The Off Center Coffeehouse on Child Street.

She leaves her father, John Elsoffer of Warwick, and a brother, Jay Elsoffer of New York.

A memorial service was held Tuesday, May 28, at Church of the Holy Spirit in Warren.

Bernard Kaufman
Former Kaufman’s Hardware owner

Bernard Kaufman, 82, of Michael Drive, Portsmouth, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. He was the husband of Esther (Guy) Kaufman.

Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Jacob and Rebecca (Solomon) Kaufman. He had lived in Fall River before moving to Portsmouth 35 years ago. He was a graduate of Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School in Fall River.

Mr. Kaufman was the owner of the former Kaufman’s Hardware Store in Portsmouth before retiring 14 years ago.

A veteran of World War II, he served as a staff sergeant in the 100 Ordnance Division in Europe.

Mr. Kaufman was a member of the board of directors of Temple Beth-El and the Fall River Jewish Home, as well as a volunteer at the Jewish Home. He was a member of the Brotherhoods of Temple Beth-El and Adas Israel Congregation, a volunteer at the Greater Fall River Community Pantry, and a member of Eureka Lodge of Masons, Jewish War Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Kaufman leaves three daughters, Marilyn Hoffman of Houston, Etta Kaufman of Portsmouth and Marsha Kaufman of Arlington, Mass., and four grandchildren.

His funeral was held Friday, May 24, at Temple Beth-El in Fall River. Burial was in the Hebrew Cemetery in Fall River.

Arthur Ferias Jr.

Lived in Warren, leaves family here

Arthur Ferias Jr., 51, of Truman Avenue died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Roger Williams Medical Center.

Born in Providence, he was a son of Mary (Charette) Ferias of Warren and the late Arthur Ferias Sr. He had lived in Warren for most of his life.

Besides his mother, he leaves a brother, Kevin Ferias of Warren; two sisters, Kathleen Canario of Warren and Terri Boccella of Richboro, Pa., and several nieces and nephews. He was a brother of the late Tina Marie Ferias.

His funeral was private.

Jeremiah J. Barry Jr.

Meat Co., avid golfer

Jeremiah J. Barry Jr., 76, of Middle Road, Portsmouth, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

Born in Newport on June 17, 1925, he was a son of the late Jeremiah J. and Helena T. (O’Sullivan) Barry.

Mr. Barry was general manager of Swift Meat Co. in San Antonio until his retirement. After retiring, he moved to Rhode Island.

He was an avid golfer and was a member of Wanumetonomy Golf and Country Club and Green Valley Country Club in Portsmouth.

He was a member of the Hibernians, Knights of Columbus, Elks Club and St. Barnabas Church, Portsmouth.

He leaves two sons, Jeremiah J. Barry III of Pickney, Mich., and Kevin Barry of Yanklon, S.D.; two sisters, Helena T. Mason of Newport and Sheila E. MacKinnon of Middletown, and seven grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Mary Santela and Daniel P. Barry.

His funeral was held on Tuesday, May 28, at St. Barnabas Church. Burial was in St. Columba’s Cemetery, Middletown.

Robert Bond
Senior center member

Robert "Shorty" Bond, 85, of 13 Scotty Drive, Portsmouth, died Saturday, May 25, 2002, at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of the late Ellen L. (Jennings) Bond.

Born in Plaistow, N.H., he was the son of the late Helen Bond.

An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the Southern Philippines, and was awarded a number of decorations for his service.

Mr. Bond was the owner of the B&E Taxi Co. before retiring.

He was a member of the Portsmouth Multi-Purpose Senior Center and was an avid card player. He was a member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Newport.

He leaves two daughters, Ellen E. Tavares of Tiverton and Barbara L. Hardy of Newport; a son, Robert A. Bond of Newport, and nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He was the father of the late Frank L. Bond.

His funeral is today, May 30, at 11 a.m. at Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, Newport. Burial will be in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.

Barbara A. Hazel

Barbara A. Hazel, 71, of Brayton Road, Tiverton, died Sunday, May 26, 2002, at Rose Hawthorne Lathrop Home in Fall River. She was the wife of the late Thomas J. hazel.

Born in Fall River, she was a daughter of the late Daniel and Mary (Cox) Rostron. She lived in Tiverton for the past 30 years.

Mrs. Hazel was a 1949 graduate of Durfee High School. She worked as office manager for the Venus deMilo Restaurant in Swansea for 37 years.

She was a communicant of St. Madeleine Sophie Church in Tiverton.

She leaves a sister and brother-in-law Kathryn G. and Joseph Boulay of Tiverton; a niece, Deborah A. Pelletier of Fall River; and a nephew, Kevin Boulay of Tiverton. She was a sister of the late William and Ruth Rostron.

Her funeral was on Wednesday, May 29, from the Maplewood Home of Harrington-Sullivan O’Rourke and Waring, Fall River, followed by a funeral Mass in St. Theresa’s Church in Tiverton. She was buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fall River.

Donations in her memory may be made to the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, c/o Rose Hawthorne Lathrop Home, 1600 Bay St., Fall River, MA 02725.

Ann Marie Silvia
Avid gardener
and skilled knitter

Ann Marie (Souza) Silvia, 63, of 55 Foxboro Ave., Portsmouth, died Thursday, May 23, 2002, at Newport Hospital.

Born in Newport, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Anna (Peters) Souza.

Mrs. Silvia had worked as a special education bus aide for Laidlaw Transit Co. until her retirement last year. She was an avid gardener and skilled knitter.

She leaves two sons, Kevin A. Silvia of Tiverton and James M. Silvia of Portsmouth; three daughters, Cynthia A. Fontaine and Cheryl M. Perry, both of Tiverton, and Stephanie L. Detusa of Portsmouth; a brother, Arthur J. Souza of Fort Myers, Fla.; a sister, Jessica R. Vieiria of Cape Coral, Fla., and 10 grandchildren.

Her funeral was held Monday, May 27, at Connors Funeral Home. Burial was private.

Richard G. Pineau
Raytheon employee
for 35 years

Richard G. Pineau, 61, of Eaton Street, Fall River, died Friday, May 24, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Linda L. (Hunt) Pineau, and the former husband of the late Catherine M. Pineau.

Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Gerard and Imelda (Richard) Pineau. He was a lifelong Fall River resident.

Mr. Pineau was a production specialist for Raytheon in Portsmouth for 35 years.

He was a lifetime member of the Sakonnet Sportsmen’s Club in Tiverton. He was an avid fisherman.

Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Catherine and Sandra Pineau, both of Fall River, and Patricia Laroche of Swansea; two sons, Michael J. Pineau of New Hampshire and Carlton Pineau of Fall River; a brother, Gerald Pineau of Tiverton; two sisters, Cecile Pimental of Somerset, Mass., and Lorraine Pineau of Minnesota, and 11 grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

His funeral was on Sunday, May 26, at Auclair Funeral Home in Fall River, followed by cremation.

Lucien R.
Castonguay
World War II vet,
former Herald News editor

Lucien R. Castonguay, 85, of Old Main Road, Little Compton, died Monday, May 27, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. He was the husband of the late Mildred (Nuttail) Castonguay.

Born in Fall River, Mr. Castonguay was a son of the late Amedee and Georgianna (Roy) Castonguay. He had lived in Little Compton since the 1960s after moving from Fall River.

Mr. Castonguay was a sergeant in the Army during World War II, serving as a war correspondent. He was the former city editor for the Fall River Herald News for over 20 years, before retiring in 1961.

He leaves nine nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Marcel A. Castonguay and several other siblings.

His funeral will be held today, May 30, at 9 a.m. from the Hathaway Home for Funerals, 1813 Robeson St., Fall River, with a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. in Notre Dame Church, Eastern Avenue, Fall River. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery in Fall River.
