Joseph Medeiros
Backhoe operator was
veteran of Korean conflict

Joseph "Big Joe" Medeiros, 68, of Plymouth Boulevard, Westport, died Monday, July 15, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of the late Helen (Powell) Medeiros.

Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Joseph A. Medeiros and the late Mary (Paiva) Medeiros. He was a lifelong Westport resident.

Before retiring, he was a backhoe operator in the construction industry.

Mr. Medeiros was an Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars No. 8502 and the Knights of Columbus Westport Council No. 4375.

He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church.

Mr. Medeiros leaves two sons, Joseph S. and Paul Medeiros, both of Westport; a sister, Dolores Pavao of Westport; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Anthony Medeiros.

His funeral will take place from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 1521 North Main St., Fall River, at 8:45 a.m., Friday, July 19, followed by a Mass in Our Lady of Grace Church in Westport at 10 a.m.

Stephen J. Pires

Laborer for P.J. Keating, was an avid pool player

Stephen J. Pires, 38, of Westport died accidently on Sunday, July 14, 2002. He was the son of James J. and Dorothy A. (Sampson) Pires of North Dartmouth.

Mr. Pires was born in Fall River and lived for the past three years in Westport. He was employed as a laborer by P.J. Keating Co. (formerly Tilcon-Capaldi) in Acushnet.

Mr. Pires was a member of the Laborer’s Union Local 610 of Fall River and the Fall River Rod & Gun Club in Westport. He was an avid pool player.

In addition to his parents, he leaves his paternal grandparents, Joseph and Christine (Costa) Pires of Fall River; his maternal grandparents, John A. and Ruth Simpson of New Hampshire; a sister, Sharon I. Pires of Fall River; and several cousins, aunts and uncles. He was the grandson of the late Mary K. (Canole) Simpson.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday morning, July 18, at St. George Church in Westport. Arrangements were by the Potter Funeral Home on Reed Road.

Robert R. Banville

Tiverton resident, active in St. Theresa’s Church

Robert R. "Bob" Banville 83, of Pelletier Lane, Tiverton, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at Saint Anne's Hospital, Fall River. He was the husband of Edna E. (Swindells) Banville to whom he had been married for 51 years.

Born in Fall River, a son of the late William J. and Emma (Robitaille) Banville, he had lived in Tiverton for the past 47 years.

Mr. Banville was a sewing machine mechanic for Bayside Manufacturing Co. for 34 years, retiring in 1978.

A member of St. Theresa Parish, Tiverton since 1970. He was past-president of the parish Mens Club . He enjoyed fishing, boating, carpentry and the CB radio.

Besides his wife, he leaves a a sister, Lorraine Heroux of Fall River; two brothers, Rene Banville of Somerset and Richard Banville of Tiverton; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Evelyn Bouchard, William Banville, Roland Banville, Roger Banville and Raymond Banville.

His funeral was held on Friday, July 5, from the Auclair Funeral Home, Fall River, with a funeral mass in St. Theresa Church. Burial was in Notre Dame Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.

Delord F. Medeiros
Owned former Broadway Upholstery in Middletown

Delord "Lou" F. Medeiros, 76, of 30 Linda Ave., Portsmouth, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002, at the Grand Islander Health Care Center, Middletown. He was the husband of the late Marie L. (Roach) Medeiros.

Born in Bristol on Feb. 17, 1926, a son of the late Manuel and Cressie (Correia) Medeiros, he was raised in Fall River and moved to Portsmouth in the mid-1950s.

Mr. Medeiros was the owner of the former Broadway Upholstery in Newport and was an upholsterer for more than 40 years.

He was a member of the Evangelical Friends Church in Middletown, the Portsmouth Multi-Purpose Senior Center, and the Portsmouth Lodge of Masons.

He leaves a son, Michael F. Medeiros of Portsmouth; a daughter, Diane L. Martucci of Portsmouth; a sister, Joan Morais of Tiverton; and six grandchildren. He was the father of the late William F. Medeiros, and the brother of the late Joseph and George Medeiros.

A graveside service was held on Saturday, July 6, in the Newport Memorial Park, Middletown. Donations in his memory may be made to the Portsmouth Multi-Purpose Senior Center, 110 Bristol Ferry Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871, or to the Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Dept. and Rescue Wagon Fund, PO Box 806, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Arrangements are by the Connors Funeral Home.

Bette J. Rotondi
Operating room nurse was accomplished organist

Bette J. Rotondi, R.N., 77, of North Dartmouth, died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at Mariner Health of Southeastern Mass., after a long illness. She was the wife of William J. Rotondi; they were married for 54 years.

Born in Batavia, Ill., the daughter of the late George and Edith (Johnson) Poole, she lived in North Dartmouth for the past 25 years. She previously lived in Dedham, Southboro and Westport.

Mrs. Rotondi graduated from Batavia High School, class of 1944, and went on to the former New England Hospital for Women and Children in Boston where she received her degree in nursing in 1948.

She worked at Boston City Hospital as an operating room nurse for more than 20 years. After that, she worked for New Bedford Human Services for several years, retiring in 1981.

Mrs. Rotondi loved doing crossword puzzles, enjoyed painting and music and was an accomplished organist.

Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, John R. Rotondi of North Dartmouth and William G. Rotondi of Norton; two daughters, Anne Lindsay of North Dartmouth and Jean M. Rotondi of Belmont; a sister-in-law, Marilyn Poole; and two grandchildren, Scott and Sarah Rotondi.

She was the sister of the late Robert Poole.

Her funeral will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, July 12, in the Dartmouth Funeral Home of Waring-Sullivan, 230 Russells Mills Road. Burial will be private.

Vincent Carotenuti

Funeral services for Vincent "Jimmy" Carotenuti were held Thursday, June 20, 2002, from the Sansone Funeral Home, with a concelebrated Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church. The Rev. James J. Verdelotti was the principal celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Concelebrating the Mass were the Rev. Joseph McSweeney, S.S.C., the Rev. Michael Harrison, S.S.C., the Rev. James Dwyer, S.S.C., the Rev. Frank Keaney, S.S.C., the Rev. John Moran, S.S.C., and the Rev. Michael Donnelly, S.S.C.

Readers for the Mass were granddaughters Rene Rodrigues and Juliann Giusti. Offertory gifts were presented by great-granddaughters Victoria Suits and Courtney Carotenuti.

Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery where Fathers Verdelotti and McSweeney read the committal prayers. James J. Carotenuti, Jason M. Carotenuti, Lee Giusti, S. Paul Mascena, Paul A. Trout and Shawn Silvia were pallbearers.

Mr. Carotenuti, 87, died Saturday, June 15, at Silver Creek Manor. He was the husband of the late Amelia (Giusti) Carotenuti.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bristol Fire Dept., Dreadnaught Ladder Company, P.O. Box 775, Bristol, RI 02089.

Irene M. Troiano
Loved the Red Sox, worked in local nursing homes

Irene A. (Mello) Troiano, 75, of 1014 Hope St., died Friday, July 5, 2002, at Metacom Manor Health Center. She was the wife of Joseph C. Troiano.

Born in Warren, she was the daughter the late Joseph P. and Belmira (Tavares) Mello. She moved to Bristol 55 years ago.

She was a dietary supervisor at Silver Creek Manor Nursing Home in Bristol for 20 years. She also worked at Crestwood Nursing Home, Old Warren Nursing Home (Desilets) and Grace Barker Nursing Home, all in Warren.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church as well as a member of the Bristol Democratic Club, Benjamin Church Tenants Association and the Royal Travelers Club. She was an avid fan of the Red Sox and her grandson’s Little League games.

She leaves three daughters, Doreen A. Ridder of Portsmouth, Elizabeth J. Tori of Walpole, Mass., and Patricia A. Montelone of Lincoln; two sisters, Louise Sousa of Bristol and Kathleen Fialho of Riverside; a brother, Charles J. Mello of Riverside and five grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Raymond J. Mello.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 9, from the Sansone Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s Church. The Rev. Barry J. Gamache was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Her granddaughter Allison M. Handren and Diane Mederos were the readers. Dennis Parente read the Prayer of the Faithful. Granddaughter Elisabeth A. Reimels was the eulogist. Grandchildren Michael J. Monteleone, Jenna R. Monteleone and Matthew A. Tori presented offertory gifts. David E. Barboza, James Welch Sr. and Edwin English, R.S.M. were Eucharistic ministers for the Mass.

Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where Father Gamache read the committal prayers. Joseph Sousa, Thomas J. Sousa Jr., Brian C. Mumma, James Mumma, Mark A. Reimels, Brenden F. Hayden, William A. Ridder and Anthony C. Mederos were the pallbearers.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bristol Fourth of July Committee, P.O. Box 561, Bristol, RI 02809 or Lincoln Little League, 4 Samuel Stevens Drive, Lincoln, RI 02865.

Gaetano F. Marabello

Funeral services for Gaetano F. "Guy" Marabello were held Saturday, June 29, 2002, from the Sansone Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. The Rev. James D. Capoverdi Jr. was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. His nieces Carol A. Landry and Barbara L. Moran were the readers. Nieces Julie M. Dutilly and Carol A. Landry presented offertory gifts.

Burial with military honors by the U.S. Navy followed in North Burial Ground, where Father Capoverdi read the committal prayers. His grandchildren Bethany L. and Ryan J. Moura, Jamie L. and Christopher A. Barbosa along with great-nephews Robert A. Almeida, Mark T. Grey and Michael J. Jodoin were pallbearers.

Mr. Marabello, 76, of 1014 Hope St. died Tuesday, June 25, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Madeline (Lopes) Marabello.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 141 State St., or the Bristol Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 775, both in Bristol, RI 02809.

Paul L. Carey III
Just finished kindergarten at Hathaway School

Paul Lawrence "Paulie" Carey III, 6 years old, of 86 Norseman Drive, Portsmouth, died Monday, June 24, 2002, in Portsmouth after an accident.

Born in Newport on March 9, 1996, he was the son of Paul L. Carey Jr. and Susan (Brown) Carey of Portsmouth.

Paulie finished kindergarten at the Hathaway School in Portsmouth several weeks ago. While in school he had received a Blastoff Reading Program medal. He was just starting his soccer season with the Phil’s Propane team in Portsmouth — his jersey was number 3. He loved spending time with his sisters, riding his two-wheel bike around the neighborhood and playing with Transformers.

Besides his parents, he leaves three sisters, Shana Brady of Portsmouth, and Tessa and Vada Carey of Portsmouth; maternal grandparents Roger and Dorothy Brown of Portsmouth; paternal grandparents Paul L. Carey Sr. and Margo Carey of Marblehead, Mass.; three uncles, Roger Brown Jr. of Middletown, and Robert and Timothy Brown, both of Portsmouth; three cousins, Roger Brown III, Matthew Brown and Timothy Brown, all of Portsmouth; and three nephews, Christian, Joshua and Zachary Brady, all of Portsmouth.

His funeral was held Saturday, June 29, from the Connors Funeral Home, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Anthony’s Church, Portsmouth. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.

Joseph T. Ventura
World War II veteran,
leaves family here

Joseph T. Ventura, 77, of 24 Washington St., Bristol, a retired chef, died Sunday, June 23, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Mary Lou (Fernandes) Ventura.

Born in Bristol, a son of the late Manuel and Mary Ventura, he was a lifelong resident of Bristol. Mr. Ventura was a chef for the Providence Biltmore Hotel for 10 years, retiring in 1991. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam and retired after serving for 20 years. Mr. Ventura was a member of the American Legion, Destroyer Escort Sailors Association of Rhode Island, the Fleet Reserve Association and A.A.R.P. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth’s Church, Bristol.

Besides his wife he leaves three sons, Dennis Ventura of Bristol, Thomas Ventura of Warren and Scott Ventura of Pawtucket; three daughters, Gloria Ventura of Bristol, Theresa Toste of Warren and Denise Murphy of Frederick, Colo.; two stepchildren, Michael Bennallack of California and Susan Almeida of Bristol; a brother, Manuel Ventura of Warwick; two sisters, Mary Lawrence of Bristol and Rose Nunes of Bristol; and ten grandchildren.

He was also the brother of the late John Ventura and Mary Couto. His funeral will be held Thursday at 9:30 a.m. from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, 615 Main St., Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth’s Church, Wood St., Bristol. Burial with military honors will be in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.
