Clifford R. Carlson
Bank executive, leader of civic, charitable groups

Clifford R. Carlson, 79, of 95 Howland Road, Westport Harbor, died on Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, in Charlton Memorial Hospital, Fall River, after a long illness. He was the husband of Alyce (Cameron) Carlson to whom he had been married for 55 years. A resident of Westport Harbor since 1979, he had also wintered in Vero Beach, Fla., for several years and had lived on Nanaquaket Road, Tiverton, from 1969 to 1979.

Born in Plainville, Conn., a son of the late Phillip and Anna (Anderson) Carlson, he lived his early life in Jamestown, N.Y., and New Britain, Conn., later returning to Plainville and graduating from Plainville High School. He graduated from Bryant College in 1949, from Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers University in 1962, and from the Management Development Program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

A Coast Guard combat veteran of World War II, he served in the South Pacific.

He was a member of United Congregational Church in Little Compton.

Mr. Carlson joined the Hartford National Bank in 1956, becoming vice president and heading its Middletown, Conn., office. While in Middletown he was involved in numerous civic and charitable causes, among them service as campaign chairman and board member of the United Fund, the Rotary Club, Faculty Club of Wesleyan University and trustee of the Portland, Conn. Congregational Church.

He joined the former Fall River National Bank in 1969, becoming a member of the board of directors, president and chief executive officer in 1970. He led the bank through its period of greatest growth. The bank joined with the former New England Merchants Bank in the mid-1970s, which in turn became the Bank of New England. He retired in 1985 as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Bank of New England and Bristol County, continuing to serve as a consultant.

Honored by the Greater Fall River Chamber of Commerce and Industry in 1984 as "Outstanding Citizen of the Year," he was praised as "a quiet, unassuming leader of powerful influence in the community" in both the public and private sectors.

Mr. Carlson served in the board of the Fall River Office of Economic Development and Jobs for Fall River. He was a board member of the Greater Fall River Development Corp., the Chamber of Commerce, the Private Industry Council, the Bristol County Development Corp., the Downtown Linkage Committee and the Women’s Occupational Resource Development Organization.

He was a founding member of the Greater Fall River Regional Task Force, served as president and director of the Greater Fall River Foundation for Giving, and served as chairman of the Business Advisory Board of the former Southeastern Massachusetts University.

He served as campaign chairman, president and chairman of the United Way of Fall River, and also served on the boards of the Marine Museum of Fall River, Home for Aged People in Fall River, Stanley Street Treatment and Resources, Fall River Historical Society, USS Massachusetts Memorial Committee, and was active in the realization of Heritage State, Park, Fall River. He was a corporator of Charlton Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Carlson was a member, board member and treasurer of the Acoaxet Golf Club, Westport Harbor, and was a member of the Elephant Rock Beach Club, Tiverton Yacht Club, Quequechan Club, and Sea Oaks Beach and Tennis Club in Vero Beach.

In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters, Anne-Elizabeth Carlson-Brennan of Exeter, and Jean A. Carlson-Siefert of Duxbury, Mass; a son, Scott A. Carlson of New York, N.Y.; and six grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held Friday, Dec. 27, at noon in the United Congregational Church, The Commons, Little Compton. Private burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Tiverton. Arrangements are by the Cherry Place Home of Waring-Sullivan, Fall River.

Wilson Silva Rego

Funeral services in Thanksgiving for the life of Wilson Silva Rego were held on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, in the Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven, Mass. The Reverend Canon John Van Siclen officiated at the services. Readers for the services were Mr. Rego’s grandchildren Erin E. Rego and William M. Moger.

Burial with military honors followed, where Mr. Rego’s grandson William M. Rego played Taps.

The Patriot Honor Guard from Hanscom Air Force Base presented the flag to Mr. Rego’s daughter, Nancy G. R. Moger, on behalf of the family.

Mr. Rego, 86, the husband of the late Grace (McLeod) Rego, formerly of Tiverton, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002 at the home of his daughter Nancy.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Grace Fund, C/O The Miriam Hospital Foundation, Box H, Providence, RI, 02901.

Mary Goulart
Former Tiverton resident

Mary Goulart, 97, of 333 Green End Ave., Middletown, died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at the Grand Islander Health Care Center in Middletown after a short illness. She was the wife of the late John S. Goulart.

Born in Fairhaven, Mass., she was a daughter of the late Frank and Angelica (Andrade) Mateos. She formerly lived at 57 Hobson Ave., Tiverton, and on East Shore Road in Jamestown.

A homemaker, Mrs. Goulart also worked as a housekeeper for various families and in the textile industry in Providence. She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Fish Road in Tiverton.

She leaves two daughters, Marie Lowery of Chauncey, Ga., and Delphina Walsh of Eters, Penn.; a son, John Goulart of Tiverton; a sister, Anna Matoes of Faial, Azores; eight grandchildren, Susan Braddy of Lagrange, Ga., Kathy MacFarland of Eastman, Ga.; Carol Caviness of Liberty, N.C.; Connie Westbrook of Siler City, N.C.; Linda Morin of Skowhegan, Maine; David Welsh of Etters, Penn.; Jarrod Goulart of Tiverton and Christian Haler of Portsmouth.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 28 at 1 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 615 Fish Road, Tiverton. Arrangements are by the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home in Tiverton.

Virginia B. Humphrey
Former resident was an avid sailor

Virginia B. Humphrey, 92, of East Providence, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at the Hattie Ide Chaffee Nursing Home in East Providence. She was the wife of the late Wallace "Bud" Humphrey.

Born in Portland, Maine, a daughter of the late Claude and Elizabeth (Baker) Berry, she was a former Barrington and Bristol resident, moving to East Providence five years ago. She was a winter resident of North Palm Beach, Fla.

A graduate of the University of Maine, she was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Barrington, an avid sailor and bridge player. She was a former member of the East Greenwich and Barrington yacht clubs, Rhode Island Country Club, Agawam Hunt and the Rhode Island Bridge Club.

She leaves a daughter, Claudia H. Scott of Barrington; a son-in-law, Parker Scott of Barrington; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. today, Monday, Dec. 23, in St. John’s Episcopal Church, 191 County Road, Barrington. Burial will follow in the Forest Chapel Cemetery in Barrington.

Victoria R. Osterholm
Leaves family in Barrington

Victoria R. Osterholm, 82, of Warren, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at South County Nursing Home in South Kingston. She was the former wife of the late Albert E. Osterholm.

Born in Pottsville, Pa., the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Micholski, she lived in Warren for 20 years and also lived in Cranston, Foster and Johnston.

Mrs. Osterholm worked as a nurse’s aide for the general hospital at the Rhode Island Institutes of Mental Health in Cranston for 20 years, retiring in 1982.

While in Foster, she lived on a farm, a life she thoroughly enjoyed.

She leaves two daughters, Ellen V. Holder of Barrington and Narragansett and Laura K. Bedard of Cape Coral, Fla.; a son, Mathias L. "Buzzy" Osterholm of Foxboro, Mass.; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Albert E. Osterholm Jr.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 20, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Mary of the Bay Church, Warren. Burial followed in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.

Ellen M. Dwan
Born in Ireland

Ellen M. Dwan, 94, of Riverside and formerly of Barrington, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at the Evergreen House Health Center in East Providence. She was the wife of the late Joseph F. Dwan.

Born in County Cork, Ireland, a daughter of the late Michael and Catherine (Walsh) Lynch, she lived in Barrington before moving to Riverside two years ago.

Mrs. Dwan was the director of services for the American Cancer Society in Providence for 25 years before her retirement. She was a member of the Carmelite Secular Order.

She leaves a daughter, Lois Battles, Ph.D., of Riverside; two grandchildren, Michael J. Battles of Newport and Catherine D. Battles of Jacksonville, N.C.; and a grandson, Peter W. Battles of Newport. She was the mother of the late Joseph F. Dwan.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 21, from the Perry/McStay Funeral Home in East Providence, with a Mass of Christian burial in the Carmelite Monastery in Barrington. Burial followed in St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Cumberland.

Stanley A. Baker
Summer resident of Westport Point

Stanley A. Baker, 96, of 1168 Highland Ave., Fall River, formerly of "Bayview," 4380 North Main St., Fall River, died Thursday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Adams House. He was the husband of the late Charlotte R. (Simmons) Baker.

Born in Taunton, a son of the late George E. and Mabel S. (Graham) Baker, he spent his youth in Taunton, living in Swansea for 41 years before moving to Fall River in 1991. He was a summer resident of Westport Harbor for many years.

Mr. Baker was owner and president of E.G. Hayes Corp. Ford Automobile Agency, and the Baker Tractor Corp. for 35 years. He was the pioneer golf cart distributor in the New England area starting in the 1960s. He retired in 1973.

Earlier, he had been office manager for C.I.T. Commercial Investment and Trust Corp., Providence and New Haven, for 15 years.

A graduate of Taunton High School, Class of 1923, he was a member of First Christian Congregational Church, swansea.

Mr. Baker was a member of the board of directors of the First Federal Savings Bank of America from 1962 until his death.

He was very active in the formation of the first Little League in Swansea, serving as its first treasurer. He was a founding member of the Swansea Industrial Commission and was a member of the Swansea Finance and Advisory Board, the Swansea Historical Society and a founding member of Cedar Cove Yacht Club.

He was a member of the Acoaxet Golf Club, Westport Harbor, serving on its board of directors, and was vice president of the Westport Harbor Aqueduct Co.

He was a member of the Quequechan Club, Lions Club, Stone House Club, Turks Head Club and Hamilton House, Providence.

A 32nd degree mason, he was a member of the Charles H. Titus Lodge Af&AM, and the Scottish and York Rite bodies.

He leaves a daughter, Christine Root of Boston, and two grandsons, Matthew Alden Root and Ian Alden Root.

His funeral was held Monday, Dec. 23, in the "Birchcrest Home" of Waring-Sullivan, Swansea. Burial was private.

Edward J. Boulanger Sr.

Former state employee, was active in youth athletics

Edward Joseph Boulanger Sr., 65, of Water Street, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the husband of Lea (Bennett) Boulanger. They were married for 38 years.

Born in Warren, he was a son of the late Antone and Bertha (Mikulski) Boulanger. He was a lifelong Warren resident.

Mr. Boulanger had been employed by the state as a janitor at the Rhode Island National Guard Armory.

He had been a member of the Bristol County Bowling League for 30 years, and had coached Warren Little League and Babe Ruth Baseball for 15 years. Mr. Boulanger was a familiar figure at local youth sporting events and was well-known and loved by youngsters in town.

He was a communicant of St. Jean Baptiste Church.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Paul Boulanger of Woodridge, N.J.; three brothers, Richard Boulanger of Aransas Pass, Texas, Antone Boulanger of Pawtucket and Roland "Ace" Boulanger of Bristol; and four sisters, Esther Thivierge of Jewett City, Conn., and Florence DaCosta, Bertha Pare, Corinne Guimond and Terry Braun, all of Warren. He was the father of the late Edward J. Boulanger Jr.

A graveside service for Mr. Boulanger was on Friday, Dec. 20, in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery in Warren.

Ethel Digioia
Leaves a son here

Ethel Digioia, 82, of Warren, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, in Cranston. She was the wife of the late Frank Digioia.

Born in South Barre, Mass., she was the daughter of the late Frank and Verna (Brigandi) Sottile. She lived in Warren for 74 years.

Mrs. Digioia was a machine operator for Taylor Box in Warren for several years before retiring.

She was a communicant of St. Alexander’s Church in Warren.

She leaves a son, Frank Digioia of Bristol; two daughters, Verna Vittorioso of Cranston and Frances McNeil of Rochester, N.H.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Alexander’s Church in Warren. Burial followed in St. Alexander’s Cemetery.
