Ruth E. Troup
Former librarian
at Essex Library

Ruth E. (Griffault) Troup, 84, of Cypress Avenue, Tiverton, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at her home. She was the wife of the late Robert W. Troup.

She was born in Fall River to the late John and Ann (Cowell) Griffault. She lived in Tiverton for 48 years.

Mrs. Troup was a bookkeeper with the former Auerbach Bathrobe Corp. in Fall River for 25 years. She also worked for the Lydia Baker Essex Library in Tiverton from 1969 to 1979.

She was a 1934 graduate of BMC Durfee High School and a 1936 graduate of the former Thibodeau’s Business School.

Mrs. Troup was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Fall River and the Double or Nothing Club of St. Mark’s. She was a member of the Tiverton Senior Center.

She leaves two first cousins, Mildred Wallbank of Westport and Dorothy Durfee of Tiverton; two second cousins, Sharon Anctil of Westport and Carolann Tripp of North Dighton, Mass; several nieces and nephews; and friends, the Rev. Lance and Alison Almeida.

Her funeral date and location are to be announced. Cherry Place Home of Waring-Sullivan, Ashton, Coughlin, Driscoll in Fall River is handling the arrangements.

Lance Cpl. Barton J. Carroll

U.S. Marine, 2001 Portsmouth graduate

Lance Cpl. Barton Joseph Carroll, USMC, 18, of 333 Wapping Road, Portsmouth, died Thursday, July 4, 2002, in Middletown.

Born in Newport on Aug. 10, 1983, he was a son of Michael J. and Elizabeth (Walker) Carroll.

Lance Cpl. Carroll was a 2001 graduate of Portsmouth High School, where he sang in the chorus. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in September and reported to Parris Island, N.C., for recruit training. He then was transferred to Camp Lejeune, N.C., for combat training and was later assigned to the Redstone Arsenal in Alabama to be trained as an ammunition technician. He was the honor graduate of his group at Redstone Arsenal.He was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church and had been an altar server for 10 years. He was a member of the Newport Rifle Club, a scuba diver, spear fisherman and a member of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets for five years at Newport Naval Base. He loved music and was an avid guitar player.

In addition to his parents, Lance Cpl. Carroll leaves his paternal grandmother, Evelyn C. Carroll of Middletown; maternal grandmother, Dorothy M. Walker of Newport; a brother, Morgan J. Carroll of Portsmouth; two sisters, Marina J. and Lydia J. Carroll, both of Portsmouth; and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was a grandson of the late Patrick F. Carroll and Robert E. Walker.

His funeral was held Wednesday, July 10, 2002, from Connors Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Barnabas Church. Burial and U.S. Marine Military Honors will be held in Newport Memorial Park in Middletown.

Memorial donations may be made to the Lance Cpl. Barton Joseph Carroll, USMC, Memorial Fund, c/o Portsmouth High School, Education Lane, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Nicholas Kelley Jr.

General counsel for Chrysler, stock broker

Nicholas Kelley Jr., 92 of Goodrich Lane, Little Compton, died on Tuesday, July 2, 2002. He was the husband of Margaret (Muir) Kelley.

Borne in 1910 in New York, N.Y., he was a son of the late Nicholas and Augusta (Maverick) Kelley. He grew up in New York, N.Y. and Washington DC, summering in Little Compton. Later, he lived in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. In 1985, he and his wife retired to Little Compton.

He attended Friends School in New York and Sidwell Friends in Washington. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, N.H. in 1927. He was a graduate of Harvard College in 1931 and Harvard Law School in 1934.

Mr. Kelley practiced law with the Larkin, Rathbone firm in New York City, were his father was senior partner. He left that firm and went to the Chrysler Corp. legal department in Detroit. During his 25 years with Chrysler he served as general counsel and corporate secretary. He also served as vice president and president of the export division.

In 1960, Mr. Kelley joined City National Bank, Detroit, where he became vice president. Always interested in the stock and bond markets he left to became a broker with Kenower, McArthur & Co., and later with the First of Michigan Corp.

While working for Chrysler, he chaired Detroit’s United Way and Boy Scouts of America programs.

He enjoyed golf, reading and bridge.

In addition to his wife, he leaves a son, Nicholas M. Kelley of Brookline, Mass.; two daughters, Susan Margaret Kelley of Fairmont, W. Va. and Deborah Maverick Kelley of Providence; and a granddaughter, Anna Wei Maverick Kelley of Fairmont. He was also the brother of the late Augustus Kelley and the late Florence Kelley Worgan.

Private arrangements are in the care of the Cherry Place Home of Waring-Sullivan, Ashton, Coughlin, Driscoll, Fall River.

Elizabeth Peabody Bulk
Decendant of Mayflower passenger

Elizabeth Peabody Bulk, 92, of 594 Indian Ave., Middletown, died Monday, July 1, 2002, at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late Reinier Bulk of 62 years. Born in Newport on Nov. 4, 1909, she was a daughter of the late Lionel Henry Peabody and Helen Mandane Ward. She graduated from Rogers High School in 1929 and from Peter Bent Brigham Hospital School of Nursing in Boston in 1932.

She was a comunicant of Calvary United Methodist Church in Middletown. Ms. Bulk was a member of the Middletown School Committee in the 1950s, Middletown Historical Society and Sutton, N.H., historical society.

She was a direct descendant of Richard Warren, who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620. Her great-grandfather, William Coggeshall, and his family were one of the founders of Newport.

She leaves a daughter, Judith Bulk Asher of Portsmouth; three sons, Richard John Bulk, Ronald Ward Bulk and Robert Owen Bulk, all of Middletown; and 10 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ms. Bulk was predecesed by a son, Reinier Bulk Jr.; two brothers, Lionel H. Peabody and Herbert W. Peabody; and three sisters, Helen Marietta, Alice Blaikie and Eunice Kelley.

Her funeral was Thursday, July 4, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Middletown. The Rev. James Hensley conducted the service. He was assisted by the Rev. George Chaplin, pastor of the Holy Cross Church, Middletown, and the Rev. Thomas J. Carnevale.

Scripture readings were given by nephew Dixon Hoogendoorn and grandsons Andrew Bulk and David Bulk. A poem was read by granddaughter Jennifer Bulk Lopes. Clergy, family and friends gave their reflections at the church service. The bearers were grandchildren David Reinier Bulk, Suzanne Bulk Lalli, John Kenneth Bulk, Jennifer Bulk Lopes, Brian Leighton Bulk, Kevin Reinier Bulk, Robert Franklin Asher Jr., Stephanie Elizabeth Asher, Andrew Bulk and Timothy Andrew Bulk. Honorary bearers were Nancy Harwood Bulk, Eileen Patricia Bulk, Nan Goddard Bulk, Deborah Winthrop Bulk, Robert Franklin Asher, Victor Hoogendoorn and Dixon Hoogendoorn.

Donations may be made to the Middletown Rescue Wagon Fund Association, 239 Wyatt Road, Middletown, RI 02842, or to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871.

Funeral arrangements were made by O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, Newport.

Theodore C. Ferri Sr.

Leaves family in Warren

Theodore C. Ferri Sr., 79, of 10 Goulart Ave. died Friday, June 21, 2002, at Desilets Nursing Home in Warren. He was the husband of the late Ann L. (Palumbo) Ferri.

Born in Bristol, a son of the late Giovanni and Maria (Piciarelli) Ferri, he was a lifelong resident.

Mr. Ferri was a superintendent and auto body repairman for 40 years with Bristol Auto Body Works, retiring in 1988. During World War II, he helped in the war effort by building PT boats at the Herreshoff boatbuilders.

He was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. He was a former member of the Bristol County Lions, Bristol County Lodge of Elks, Leonardo daVinci Lodge, Sons of Italy and a former Boy Scout.

He leaves two daughters, Bernadette and Stephanie A. Ferri, both of Bristol; five sons, Theodore C. Ferri Jr. of Bristol, Richard Michael Ferri of Bristol, Bruce A. Ferri of Providence, Thomas C. Ferri of Bristol and Rodney M. Ferri of Pawtucket; five grandchildren, William C. Ferri of Bristol, Kim Elizabeth Ferri of Warren, Theodore C. Ferri III of Bristol, Lauren J. Pradhan of Warren, and Melissa Ferri of Warren; three great-grandchildren Taylor Elizabeth and Nathan Ferri of Warren and Michael Ferri of Bristol; and a sister, Rose Silvia of East Providence.

He was also the brother of the late Floyd, Sam and Angelo Ferri, Phyllis Perry, Josephine Ormond and Gilda Cavaliere.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday, June 28, at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Arrangements are being handled by Sansone Funeral Home.

Lucille Tavares
Homemaker, leaves a son here

Lucille (Leite) Tavares, 74, of Fall River died Sunday, June 30, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. She was the wife of the late Albert C. Tavares.

A lifelong resident of Fall River, she was the daughter of the late Antone and Anna (Andrade) Leite.

Mrs. Tavares was a homemaker and former member of St. Mary Cathedral.

She leaves two sons, Alan Tavares of Bristol and Robert Tavares of Fall River; two daughters, Joyce Moniz of Fall River and Debra Barboza of Somerset, Mass.; three brothers, Daniel Leite of Somerset, Joseph Leite of Arizona and Robert Leite of Lakeville, Mass.; a sister, Barbara Oldrid of Fall River, nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She was also the mother of the late Charles Albert Tavares who died in Vietnam in 1969.

Her funeral is Wednesday, July 3, from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, 1521 N. Main St., Fall River, at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Cathedral, Spring Street, Fall River. Internment will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.

Joseph W. Walmsley
Leaves a daughter here, lace weaver in local factories

Joseph W. Walmsley, 69, of Warren, died Monday, July 8, 2002, at Miriam Hospital. He was the husband of Deborah J. (Mellor) Walmsley.

Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late Alexander and Elizabeth (Christie) Walmsley, he lived in Warren most of his life.

He was a lace weaver for many years, having worked at many area factories including Barrington Laceworks and Seekonk Lace.

He leaves a son, Kenneth R. Walmsley of Warwick; a daughter, Abbie-Jo Francis of Bristol; a brother, Harold Walmsley of Pawtucket and a grandson.

He was also the brother of the late Alexander Walmsley Jr.

His funeral service will be private. Arrangements are being made by the William J. smith and Son Funeral Home, 15 Church St., Warren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Warren Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 553, Warren, RI 02885.

Mary V. Nappi

Funeral services for Mary V. (Russell) Nappi were held Wednesday, June 19, 2002, from the Sansone Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. The Rev. James D. Capoverdi Jr. was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Readers for the Mass were Patricia and Katie Reineke. Offertory gifts were presented by Mr. and Mrs. Edward Raposa.

Burial followed in North Burial Ground where Father Capoverdi read the committal prayers. Bryan M. Wilcox, Stephen A. Wilcox, Mark E. Raposa, Eddy D. Espinoza, Michael V. Shea and Thomas W. McInvale were pallbearers.

Mrs. Nappi, 96, wife of the late John J. Nappi, died Friday, June 14, at her home in Vero Beach, Fla.

Capt. Richard G. Robinson
Retired Delta Airlines captain

Capt. Richard G. Robinson, 61, of Easton, N.H., and 25 Amesbury Lane, Little Compton, died on Sunday, June 30, 2002, at St. Anne’s Hospital, Fall River. He was the husband of Gail Borden (Munsill) Robinson.

Born in Fall River, a son of the late Dr. George E. and Pauline E. (Grier) Robinson Sr., he lived his early life in Fall River, graduating from BMC Durfee High School. After graduating from Dean Junior College in Franklin, Mass., American University in Washington, DC, and Parks Aeronautic School, he became a commercial airline pilot with Delta Airlines, retiring as a captain after 34 years.

An avid model airplane builder and flyer, he was a member of the Stearman Antique Airplanes Association and flew a PT-17 US Army 1942. This particular plane was in Tuskegee, Ala., and was used to train the famed "Tuskegee Airmen." The plane was retired from the Army in 1945.

Capt. Robinson was a member of the Airline Pilot’s Association, the Acoaxet Club, the Elephant Rock Beach Club and the Spindle Rock Club, all of Westport Harbor, and was an avid HAM radio operator known by the call letters AA1UX.

Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Heather Robinson of Little Compton; a brother, George Robinson of Tiverton; three step-daughters, Sayles Livingston, Hope Ryan and Sara Oliveira, all of Little Compton; a step-son, Bradford Livingston of Little Compton; five grandchildren and a niece and a nephew.

His Service of Thanksgiving and Reflection will be held Sunday, July 14, at 11:30 a.m. at his residence, Millbrook Farm, 25 Amesbury Lane, Little Compton. Burial will be private.

Eve Widgoff Shapiro
Leaves mother in Barrington

Eve (Widgoff) Shapiro, 48, of Brighton and Boston, Mass., died Thursday, June 27, 2002, at home.

Born on Long Island, N.Y., a daughter of Mildred Widgoff of Barrington, she was a social worker for the Massachusetts Department of Health. She was very active in community affairs and worked with Russian immigrants in the United States and Italy. She translated the Russian songs of "Bulat Okudzhava" into English in work published in 1980.

Besides her mother, she leaves a brother, Jon Shapiro of San Francisco, Calif.; and many friends and relatives.

Graveside services were held Friday, June 28, at the Forest Chapel Cemetery on Nayatt Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the AT Children’s Project, 668 South Military Trail, Deerfield Beach, Fla. 33442.

Arrangements were by te Levine Chapel in Brookline, Mass.
