James R. Windley
Korean War veteran leaves brother in town

James R. Windley, 71, of Warren, formerly of Newport, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Roger Williams Medical Center.

Born in Newport, he was a son of the late James R. and Mabel (Munroe) Windley. He lived in Newport before moving to Warren.

Mr. Windley was a custodian in the Newport school system for 22 years, working at Thompson Junior High School before retiring in 1989.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He leaves a brother, Howard T. Windley of Barrington; two sisters, Katherine M. Hall of Newport and Gloria A. Nawrocki of San Diego, Calif; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Daniel C., Norman A., Samuel and Robert S. Windley, and Riba Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday, July 30, in St. Augustin Church, Newport. He was buried in St. Columba Cemetery in Middletown.

Robin L. Russell
Bristol High graduate loved horses, gardening

Robin L. (McCaughey) Russell, 48, of Barrington died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at home. She was the wife of Ronald A. Russell.

Born in Fall River, a daughter of the late Henry T. and Helen (Remeires) McCaughey, she lived in Barrington for 11 years. She previously resided in Riverside and Bristol.

A graduate of Bristol High School, she was the office manager for 13 years for High-Tech Engineering, Inc. in Pawtucket before retiring in 2001. Previously, she worked for 12 years for Wm. N. Harris Inc. in Providence.

Mrs. Russell was an avid horseback rider, spending many hours with her beloved horse Beau. With a great love of the outdoors, she enjoyed kayaking and gardening.

Besides her husband, she leaves two stepsons, Ronald A. Russell Jr. of Riverside and Michael T. Russell of Mooresville, N.C.; two sisters, Beth L. Cordeiro and Peg Desmarais, both of Bristol; a brother, Thomas W. McCaughey of Bristol; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 27, in the First Baptist Church of Bristol on High Street. Burial followed in Thomas Cemetery in Swansea.

Arthur E. Riopel
Former cloth inspector, longtime Warren resident

Arthur Ernest Riopel, 100, of the Grace Barker Nursing Center, formerly of Libby Lane, died Monday, July 29, 2002 at the center. He was the husband of the late Florida (Gamelin) Riopel. They had been married 27 years at the time of her death.

Born in St. Gabrielle de Branden, Canada, he was the son of the late Ovila and Marie (Sandon) Riopel. He lived most of his life in Warren.

Mr. Riopel was a cloth inspector for Berkshire Hathaway for many years, retiring in 1967. He was a communicant of St. Jean Baptiste Church.

He leaves three sons, Norman E. Riopel of Campton, N.H., Robert A. Riopel of East Providence and Richard R. Riopel of Oakland Park, Fla.; two daughters, Vivian Y. Gomes of Riverside and Lorraine J. Viveiros of Fall River; two sisters, Rose Bissette and Florida Bouffard, both of Warren; 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Ovila Riopel, Delia Burke, Eva Trombly, Mary Riopel, Alma Vincent, Dora Vincent and Blanche Couturier.

His funeral is today, Wednesday, July 31, at 9 a.m., from the William J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, 15 Church St., Warren, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Jean Baptiste Church on Main Street.

Donations in his memory may be made to the charity of your choice.

Anna R. Burke

Funeral services for Anna R. (Vatalaro) Burke were held Saturday, July 27, 2002, from the Sansone Funeral Home, with a concelebrated Mass of Christian burial at St. Mary’s Church. The Rev. Barry J. Gamache was the principal celebrant and homilist for the Mass, while the Rev. John O’Doherty, S.S.C., concelebrated the Mass.

Her granddaughters Nancy Lanni, Elayne Burke and Karyn Harper were the readers. Daughters Joan B. Ferri and Ann J. Travers along with granddaughter Debra McMullen presented offertory gifts. David E. Barboza was the Eucharist minister and assisted with the Mass.

Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery where Father Gamache read the committal prayers. Her grandsons Richard J., Joseph F. and John D. Sylvia, Joseph P. Travers, John L. Burke III and James P. Harper were the pallbearers.

Mrs. Burke, 95, of 7 Creek Lane, died Tuesday, July 23, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late John L. Burke.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary’s Church, 330 Wood St., Bristol, RI 02809, or to a charity of donor’s choice.

J. Herbert Davis
Leaves a son in Barrington

J. Herbert Davis, 90, of Bay Spring Village, 147 Bay Spring Ave., died Thursday, July 4, 2002, at the Orchard View Nursing Home in East Providence. He was the son of the late John H. and Amy Davis.

Born in West Harwich, Mass., he lived in Barrington with his son John for six months. He had previously resided in Tiverton at Sakonnet Bay Manor.

A graduate of Attleboro High School and the University of Rhode Island, Mr. Davis worked in sales in Ohio, New York and Attleboro. He retired as regional manager and sales representative for St. Regis Paper of Attleboro.

An avid golfer, he was a member of Highland Country Club in Attleboro and Cranberry Valley in Harwich, Mass. He was also a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants.

He leaves two sons, John H. Davis of Barrington and Bruce K. Davis of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a daughter, Dareen A. Davis of West Harwich; three grandchildren and a great-grandson.

A private burial will be conducted in West Harwich at a later date.

Thomas H. Bell Jr.
Supervisor at Quonset Point more than 30 years

Thomas H. Bell Jr., 84, formerly of 22 Reservoir Avenue, died Friday, Aug. 9, 2002, in Desilets Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Jennie (Zinamirowski) Bell.

Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Thomas H. and Florence Mildred (Partington) Bell, and a stepson of the late Audrey (Partington). He lived in Warren more than 50 years.

Mr. Bell was supervisor of supplies and materials at Quonset Point for more than 30 years, retiring in 1976.

He was a graduate of Durfee High School in Fall River, Class of 1934, where he played on the football team

Mr. Bell was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant with he 24th E-Vac Hospital in Europe.

He leaves three sisters, Florence M. Gray of Somerset, Ellen Bell Howard of Montpelier, Va., and Lillian M. Taylor of Tiverton; several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. He was the brother of the late Rev. Dr. William H. Bell.

His funeral was on Tuesday, Aug. 13, in the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren. He was buried with military honors in Warren South Burial Ground.

Roseanna Vermette
Homemaker, Red Sox fan was 101

Roseanna Vermette, 101, of 165 Water St. died Wednesday, July 24, 2002, at Silver Creek Nursing Home in Bristol. She was the wife of the late Alexander Vermette.

Born in Warren, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Melvina Proulx.

A homemaker, Mrs. Vermette was a communicant of St. Jean Baptiste Church for most of her life. She had been an avid Red Sox fan since 1912.

She leaves two daughters, Irene Fernandes of Bristol and Rita Doris Rutkiewicz of Warren; a sister, Evelyn Potuchek of Westport, Mass.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated for Mrs. Vermette on Saturday, July 27, at St. Jean Baptiste Church, 328 Main St. She was buried in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery.

Robin L. Russell

Georgina C. Souza
Little Compton resident, cooked for local families

Georgina C. Souza, 94, of East Main Road, Little Compton, died on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2002, at the Metacom Manor Health Center in Bristol. She was the wife of the late Manuel Souza.

Born in Little Compton, she was a daughter of the late Manuel and Theresa (Arruda) Cordeiro.

Mrs. Cordeiro was employed as a cook for various families in Little Compton for several years before retiring in 1989.

She leaves two daughters, Lorraine M. Goulart of Little Compton and Elizabeth (Betty) A. Sylvia of Bristol; two sons, Edward R. Souza and Richard Souza of Little Compton; 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Angelina Araujo, Mary Bahia, Rose Cordeiro, John A. Cordeiro and Arthur A. Cordeiro.

Her funeral was held on Tuesday morning from the Fern Acres Funeral Home, Little Compton, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Catherine of Siena Church on The Commons. Burial was in Our Lady of Fatima Cemetery, Little Compton.

Anthony Imbriglio Sr.
Former resident, avid accordion player

Anthony Imbriglio Sr., 91, formerly of Terrace Avenue, Tiverton, died Monday, July 29, 2002, at the Rose Hawthorne Lathrop Home in Fall River. He was the husband of the late Mary (Fallows) Imbriglio.

Born in Fall River, he was a son of the late Frank and Anna (Pescarino) Imbriglio. He was a graduate of BMC Durfee High School and the University of Rhode Island.

Mr. Imbriglio was the founder of the Imbriglio Accordion School in Fall River and taught accordion at the New England Conservancy of Music in Boston. He served as assistant director of the Gaviani Conservatory of Music in Boston, and was a partner in the New England Musical Instrument Co.

Mr. Imbriglio was a past director and president of the Accordion Teachers’ Association of Massachusetts. He was a member of the American Accordion Association and the Massachusetts and Rhode Island Accordion Teachers’ Association.

He was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army in Africa and Europe, and received several medals and citations.

Mr. Imbroglio was a communicant of St. Christopher Church and was a third-degree member of the Father Boehr Council, Knights of Columbus.

He leaves a daughter, Donna Duggins of Tiverton; a son, Anthony Imbriglio Jr. of Exeter; a sister, Camella Bond of Fall River; two brothers, Adam Imbriglio of Tiverton, and Eugene Imbriglio of North Branford, Conn.; two granddaughters and four great-grandsons. He was the brother of the late Eva Crosson and Mary Voboril.

His funeral was held Friday, Aug. 2 at 8 a.m. from the Jeffrey E. Sullivan Funeral Home in Fall River, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Christopher Church in Tiverton. Burial was in Notre Dame Cemetery in Fall River.
