Christine J. Gomes
Tiverton resident, former nurse’s aide

Christine J. "Chris" (Finn) Gomes, 47, of 126 Durfee Road, Tiverton, and formerly of the Island Park section of Portsmouth, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2002, at Newport Hospital.

Born on Aug. 16, 1954, in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late Richard F. and Rose M. (Rowe) Finn. She had resided in Portsmouth and Tiverton for most of her life.

Mrs. Gomes was employed for three years in various positions at Tremblay’s Cafe in Island Park. She previously was employed as a certified nurse’s aide at Ocean State Nursing in Middletown.

She leaves a son, Dennis "Cole" Gomes of Portsmouth; two daughters, Amber D. Gomes and Michaela F. Boone, both of Portsmouth; a brother, David J. Finn of St. Louis; three sisters, Maureen Gallant of Fall River, Carol Durkin and Rosemary Larocque, both of Tiverton; six grandchildren; and several cousins, nephews and nieces.

She was the sister of the late Richard M. "Mickey" Finn.

The funeral was held Tuesday, Aug. 6 from the Oliveira Funeral Home in Fall River, with a funeral Mass in St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth. Burial was private.

Joan T. Paul
Leaves large family

Joan T. (McConnell) Paul, 80, of Fall River died on Wednesday, July 31, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Adelard Paul.

A daughter of the late James and Abbie (Sullivan) McConnell, she was a lifelong Fall River resident.

Mrs. Paul worked for over 15 years as a sewing machine operator for the former Lynn Sportswear of Fall River. During World War II, she worked for the former Firestone of Fall River.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church, Fall River, the Catholic Women’s Club, I.L.G.W.U and the Corkey Row Club.

She leaves two sons, Raymond J. Paul of Parump, Nev. and Thomas Paul of Fall River; three daughters, Jeannette Dupras of Fall River, Yvonne L. St. Pierre of Fall River and Joan T. Arruda of Portsmouth; a brother, Robert F. McConnell of Swansea; 22 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Anita Kitchen, Blanche Arel, Doris Paul and Bertha Paul, and sister of the late Marjorie Randall, Mary Denardo, James McConnell, John McConnell and William McConnell.

Her funeral was held Monday, Aug. 5 from the Boule Funeral Home, Fall River, followed by a Mass in Sacred Heart Church, Fall River. She was buried in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Fall River.

Mary J. McQuillan
Leaves family in Tiverton

Mary J. (Palmer) McQuillan, 79, of Dartmouth died Monday, July 29, 2002, at home from malignant melanoma. She was the wife of Edwin J. McQuillan.

Born in San Francisco, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Anne (Lemey) Palmer.

For 55 years, she lived in Fairhaven, Mass., and more recently in South Dartmouth, Mass.

Ms. McQuillan was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Dartmouth and a member of the church’s Ladies Guild. She was employed by Rochester Memorial School as a teacher’s aide until her retirement in the late 1970’s.

She was a member of the Ladies’ Branch of the New Bedford Port Society, the Colonial Club of Fairhaven, the Volunteer Council of the New Bedford Whaling Museum, The Shining Tides Quilters Guild, a former member of the Greater New Bedford Garden Club and the Couples Club of St. Joseph’s Church in Fairhaven.

She enjoyed quilting, traveling, flower gardening and arranging and painting in watercolors. She cherished time with friends and her family and was proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments.

Besides her husband, she leaves five daughters, Mary Anne McQuillan of East Freetown Mass., Elizabeth McQuillan of LaJolla, Calif., Martha McAfee of Fairhaven, Mass., Trish Ashworth of Tiverton and Joanna McQuillan Weeks of Fairhaven, Mass.; her sons-in-law, Fred Sterner, William McAfee, Glenn Ashworth and Loring S. Weeks; four grandchildren, Joshua Renfree of New York, N.Y., Adam Renfree of LaJolla, Calif., Katherine McAfee and Stephen McAfee, both of Fairhaven, Mass.; two brothers, Ed Palmer and Warren Palmer, both of San Francisco; many nieces and nephews.

Her funeral will be held on Friday, Aug. 2 at 9 a.m. at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, Mass. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church, South Dartmouth at 10 a.m.. Visiting hours are Thursday, August 1, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. She will be buried at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Southcoast Home Care, 28 Sconticut Neck Road, Fairhaven, MA 02719 or to the Dartmouth Council on Aging Daycare Program, 628 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth MA 02748.

Janet C. Boardman
Artist and Sportswoman,
summered in Little Compton

Jane Carrott Boardman, 86, died on Thursday, August 1, 2002. She was the wife of the late William H. Boardman.

Born in New York City in the Plaza Hotel, a daughter of the late Orville B. and Jane Carrott of Greenwich, Conn., she had lived for many years in Seekonk and summered in Little Compton.

Mrs. Boardman began her career as an artist in the mid-1930s, studying under Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students League in New York City and later under Xavier Gonzales. In 1953 she won the Gumbacher Prize at the Rhode Island Arts Festival and a year later was the first recipient of the John G. Aldrich Memorial Prize for watercolors. Her last show was a retrospective held in Bristol with the artist William G. Congdon, an internationally known painter in the 1960s.

Friends and family knew of her active interest in fishing and hunting. Her mother, instructed by Annie Oakley, taught her to hunt in the Blue Mountain Reserve in New Hampshire in the 1920s. In 1937 she spent the summer aboard a 40'-foot trading ketch on the first expedition to James Bay in Canada to open the area to sportsmen. In 1991 she wrote and illustrated a book about the experience entitled Venture in the Midnight Sun.

Mrs. Boardman grew up in Greenwich, CT and attended the Westover School and Bennington College.

She leaves a daughter, Anne B. Fordyce of Greenwich, Conn. and Little Compton; two sons, Richard B. Boardman of Wellesley, Mass., and William H. Boardman Jr. of Chestnut Hill, Mass. and Keene Valley, N.Y.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Her funeal will be private. Memorial donations may be sent to the Association for the Preservation of Sutton Island, c/o Thomas V. Lange, P.O. Box 747, Northeast Harbor, ME 04662.

Charles H. Amaral
Longtime Tiverton resident

Charles H. "Charlie" Amaral, 87, of 17 Foote St., Tiverton, died Saturday, July 27, 2002, at Metacom Manor Health Center in Bristol. He was the husband of Georgina (Camara) Amaral.

Born in Providence on Aug. 28, 1914, he was the son of the late Celestino and Mary (Mello) Amaral. He lived in Tiverton for the last 56 years.

Mr. Amaral worked for many years as an agerman at River Edge. He was previously employed at Swansea Print and as a sweeper at the former Bourne Mill.

In his youth, he was an avid soccer player. He played for the Monarchs in Tiverton and was an avid fisher and gardener.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Amaral leaves two sons, Carlos Amaral of Tiverton and Robert Amaral of Santa Rosa, Calif.; two sisters, Rose Furtado of Fall River and Mary Moniz of Tiverton; a brother, Alfred Amaral of Middletown; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

His funeral was held Tuesday, July 30 from Oliveira Funeral Home in Fall River, with a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Ghost Church in Tiverton. Burial was in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Fall River.

Sylvia J. Boudreau
Born in Canada, was a homemaker

Sylvia J. Boudreau, 74, of Barrington Cove Apartments on Bay Spring Avenue, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She was the wife of the late Frederick J. Boudreau.

Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, a daughter of the late Florence (Rossiter) Taylor and stepdaughter of Donald Taylor of Canada, she had lived in Rocky Hill, Conn. and East Providence before moving to Barrington six years ago.

Besides her stepfather, she leaves five daughters, Karen J. McCarthy of Burrillville, Denise C. Mello of Stockton Springs, Maine, Jain E. Fortin of Martson Mills, Mass., Lynn S. Boudreau of Bristol and Ellen J. McDonough of Pomfret, Vt.; a son Frederick J. Boudreau Jr. of Stetson, Maine; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 27, from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home in East Providence. Burial was private.

Charles ‘Chuck’ Harrison
Tugboat engineer in New York City

Charles "Chuck" Harrison, 84, of Riverside, died Tuesday, July 23, 2002 at the United Methodist Health Care Center in East Providence. He was the husband of Thelma (Slade) Harrison.

Born in Springfield, Mass., a son of the late Thomas and Alexandria (Souter) Harrison, he had lived in East Providence for 61 years, moving there from West Barrington.

A retired tugboat engineer, he had worked as an engineer on tugboats out of New York City from 1960, retiring as a chief engineer in 1981. He had previously been a lace worker at the former Rhode Island Lace Works in Barrington.

Mr. Harrison was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers and the American Legion Post 10 in Riverside. He was a World War II Army veteran serving in the military police, and also served as an MP in the United States Air Force.

Besides his wife he leaves a son, Darryl C. Harrison of Rehoboth; three brothers, John Harrison of Riverside, Emile Harrison of Cantonsville, Md. and James Harrison of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Jane Labar of Harveys Lake, Pa., Agnes Massey of Riverside and Ethel Pickett of East Providence; and two grandchildren. He was a brother of the late Thomas, Walter and William Harrison.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 26 in the Barrington United Methodist Church on Washington Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Barrington United Methodist Church, 230 Washington Road, Barrington, R.I. 02806.

Priscilla Rockwell
Antiques dealer in Warren

Priscilla Church Rockwell, 80, of Fairway Drive, died Friday, August 2, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She was the wife of Robert K. Rockwell. The couple would have celebrated their 60th anniversary this Saturday.

Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Gilbert L. and Louisa (Randall) Church. She lived in Barrington for 48 years.

Mrs. Rockwell owned and operated East Bay Antiques in Warren for 22 years before retiring in 1991; the business specialized in 19th century American furniture.

A master refinisher, she attended Pembroke College, now Brown University, as well as the Lincoln School for Girls in Providence. She enjoyed reading, sewing, knitting and interior decorating.

Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Jeffrey M. Rockwell of Riverside; a daughter, Anne Rockwell Petto of Bay Village, Ohio; and a granddaughter, Laura Petto. She was a sister of the late Catherine C. Flynn and Nelson R., Lousia E, Eben R., Samuel C and Laura C. Church.

A memorial service was held Saturday, August 17, in St. John’s Episcopal Church. Burial followed in Forest Chapel Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Barrington Public Library, County Road, Barrington, R.I. 02806.
