Thomas J. Sauve
Warren firefighter and Vietnam veteran

Thomas J. Sauve, 56, of Metacom Avenue died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital.

He was the husband of Claudia (Brule) Sauve. Born in Waltham, Mass., a son of the late Noah and Josephine (Montaque) Sauve, he had lived most of his life in Warren.

Mr. Sauve was a member of the Warren Fire Department Engine 3 and was captain of the former Warren Fire Company, Engine 4.

He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was a communicant of St. Jean Baptiste Church and a member of Bristol Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed hunting.

Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Ryan Sauve at home; two daughters, Meaghan Sauve at home and Laurene Lanzer in Ohio; and a sister, Josette Burke of Walpole, Mass. He was the brother of the late Robert Sauve.

His funeral was held Tuesday, Dec. 10, from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, Riverside, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Jean Baptiste Church. Burial with military honors was in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery.

Gertrud Neissner
Born in Germany; leaves family here

Gertrud "Trudy" Neissner, 94, of Bristol, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at Waterview Villa in East Providence. She was the wife of the late Alfred Neissner.

Born in Christ Stolp, Pommern, Germany, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Ida Andreaeskowske.

A resident of Bristol for the last 27 months, she previously resided in Greenwich, Conn. Along with her husband, she was the owner and operator of a restaurant and delicatessen in New York City before retiring in 1968.

Mrs. Neissner was a communicant of St. Jean Baptiste Church in Warren.

She leaves a daughter, Gertrude Wahrenburg of Bristol; a granddaughter, Lisa DeNunzio of Barrington; a grandson, Paul Wahrenburg of Redding, Conn.; and four great-grandchildren, Jeffrey and Cassie DeNunzio of Barrington and Christopher and Stephen Wahrenburg of Redding.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002 in St. Jean Baptiste Church in Warren. Burial followed in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence.

Beatrice B. Deschenes
Former spooler leaves eight great grandchildren

Beatrice B. (Lapointe) Deschenes, 85, of Chamberlain Terrace, Middletown, R.I., formerly of Westport, died at home on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002. She was the widow of Leo O. Deschenes.

Born in New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Elise (Tetreault) and Wilfred Lapointe Sr. She spent her youth in New Bedford and moved to Westport in 1950. She lived in Westport for 47 years before moving to Middletown, R.I.

Mrs. Deschenes was a spooler at the former Ross Mathews in Fall River for many years. She was a communicant of St. George Church while living in Westport.

Mrs. Deschenes was a past member of the Battleship Sam Camping Group in Fall River and the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Post 118 in Westport. She enjoyed attending the Forest Farm Day Care in Middletown.

She leaves two daughters, Lorraine I Peckham and her husband, Charles Peckham, Jr., of Middletown, and Janet Bettencourt of Newport, R.I.; a sister, Jeannette Caron of New Bedford; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Roger Deschenes and sister of the late Yvonne Leblanc and Irene Pelletier.

Her funeral was held on Saturday, Dec. 7, from the Dartmouth Funeral Home of Waring-Sullivan, followed by a Mass at St. George Church in Westport. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery in New Bedford.

Wilson S. Rego
World War II veteran, leaves family here

Wilson S. Rego, 86, of 727 Hope St., died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at the home of his daughter, Nancy G. R. Moger, in Bristol. He was the husband of the late Grace (McLeod) Rego.

Born in Fall River, he was the second child of the late Deniz S. and Maria C. (Cabral) Rego. A resident of Bristol for the past three years, Mr. Rego lived on Belleview Avenue in Tiverton for nearly 50 years.

He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was stationed at Hickman Field in Honolulu during the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. In April 1942, he shipped out to the south Pacific and was stationed at Guadalcanal, Bouganville and New Guinea. Like many of his generation, he never spoke of these events.

After serving in World War II, Mr. Rego returned to Fall River, where he owned and operated the former Rego’s Market on Bedford Street for 27 years, before retiring in 1973.

Mr. Rego was a member of the VFW Post 5392 in Tiverton and the American Legion Post 37 in Little Compton.

In addition to his daughter, he leaves two sons, Wilson M. Rego of Bristol and Allan M. Rego of Tiverton; five grandchildren, Erin E. Rego of Providence, Alexandra M. and Allan M. Rego of Tiverton, William M. Moger of Bristol and Wilson M. Rego II of Tiverton; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Dennis S. Rego, Constance Mello and Lydia White.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service with military honors on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 11:30 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery, 274 Main St., Fairhaven, Mass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Grace Fund, C/O The Miriam Hospital Foundation, Box H, Providence, RI 02901.

Leona M. Butler
Grandmother of three, lived here 52 years

Leona M. (Maher) Butler, 77, of Westport died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long illness. She was the wife of Robert L. Butler, Jr.

Born in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late Edward C. and Alice G. (Mahoney) Maher. She had lived in Westport for the past 52 years.

Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Robert W. Butler of Dartmouth; a daughter, Linda M. Butler of Fall River; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Her funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport. Interment is in Beech Grove Cemetery.

Kenneth R. Keegler
Decorated World War II veteran

Kenneth R. Keegler, 79, of Riverside and formerly of Barrington, died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at the Rhode Island Veterans Home in Bristol. He was the husband of the late Betsy (Chapin) Keegler.

Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, a son of the late Joseph and Ida (Reid) Keegler, he was a decorated United States Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon seven stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a star and the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. He attended Western Reserve University, and worked as a salesman for Diamond Shamrock Co. for 35 years. A communicant of St. Mark’s Episcopal church in Riverside, he was a member of the New England Chemical Club and lived in Barrington from 1968 to 1984.

Mr. Keegler leaves two sons, Kenneth R. Keegler of Seekonk and John Keegler of Lincoln; two daughters, Linda Borchers of Jonesboro, Ga. and Nancy Bossi of Fort Meade, Md.; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 19 in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

M. Virginia Simmons
Retired office manager, formerly of Warren

M. Virginia Simmons, 73, of 11200 Lasaine Avenue, Granada Hills, Calif., formerly of Warren, died Saturday, Nov. 16, 2002, in Lisbon, Portugal, where she was vacationing with her sister, Eleanor J. Simmons.

Born in Fall River, she was a daughter of the late Wilfred C. and Mary Ezikovich Simmons. She lived in California for 47 years, previously living in Warren.

Ms. Simmons was an office manager for Prudential Insurance Co. in Encino, Calif., for 34 years, retiring in 1981. A graduate of the former Warren High School, Class of 1947, she began her career with Prudential Insurance in the Warren office before moving to California.

A world traveler, Ms. Simmons had visited 82 countries in her lifetime. She also enjoyed classical music and was an avid reader of history. She was a member of St. John Baptiste de LaSalle Church in Granada Hills.

She leaves a sister, Eleanor J. Simmons of Granada Hills; one nephew, two nieces, and many great-nephews and great-nieces. She was the sister of the late Wilfred C. Simmons Jr., and Joyce B. Simmons.

Her funeral was on Monday, Nov. 25, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary of the Bay Church in Warren. She was buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Bristol.

Lenard A. Garvin
Self-employed fisherman, lifelong Warren resident

Lenard A. Garvin, 44, of Cottage Street, died Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital.

Born in Providence, he was the son of Dorothy (Cranston) Garvin of Warren and the late Christopher Garvin. He was a lifelong Warren resident.

Mr. Garvin was a self-employed fisherman for many years.

He especially enjoyed bass fishing and was a member of the East Warren Rod & Gun Club.

Besides his mother, he leaves a daughter, Diane Garvin of Warren.

His funeral was on Friday, Nov. 15, in the William J. Smith & Son Funeral Home in Warren. He was buried in South Burial Ground.

Anne Mary Sevigny
Homemaker, formerly of Warren

Anne Mary Sevigny, 91, formerly of Coomer Avenue, died Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2002, at Madonna Manor Nursing Home in Attleboro. She was the wife of the late Joseph "Del" Sevigny.

Born in Oakdale, Pa., she was a daughter of the late James and Mary (McElwee) McHugh. She had lived in Warren and Bristol, moving to North Attleboro 20 years ago.

A homemaker, Mrs. Sevigny was a graduate of the former Colt Memorial High School in Bristol, and Bryant College.

Mrs. Sevigny was a communicant of St. Mary of the Bay Church in Warren and a member of its Daughters of Isabella. She was also a member of the church’s Women’s Guild Society Bowling League and had taught CCD classes.

She leaves three sons, Stephen Sevigny of Attleboro, Richard Sevigny of British Columbia and Peter Sevigny of Warren; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Cornelius and Bernard McHugh, and Marjorie McKnight.

Her funeral was on Saturday, Nov. 23, from the William J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary of the Bay Church. She was buried in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery in Warren.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the St. Mary of the Bay Sanctuary Fund, 645 Main St., Warren, RI 02885.

Dagny Maria Greene
Charter member
of Baptist Church

Dagny Maria Greene, 90, of Grafton, Vt. and formerly of Barrington, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, at the McGirr Nursing Home in Bellows Falls, Vt. She was the wife of the late Leon Greene; they had been married 49 years.

Born in Jacobstad, Finland, a daughter of the late Pastor Karl and Maria (Ringborg) Gabrielson, she traveled with her family to the United States aboard the Bergensfjord. She lived for many years in Barrington and Riverside, and also lived for periods in Connecticut, Grafton, Vt. and Westminster, Vt.

Mrs. Greene graduated from the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 1944, and also attended the Providence Bible Institute. A charter member of the Barrington Baptist Church, she was also a member of Community Christian Church in Athens, Vt., where she was a member of the Community Christian Church Missions Committee.

She worked as a private cook but spent most of her life as a housewife. She enjoyed cooking, letter writing, swimming and knitting. She always kept her bible open, and her ministries included visiting the elderly and shut-ins, praying for and writing to missionaries, providing hospitality to traveling missionaries, teaching Sunday School and Pioneer Girls, knitting cotton bandages and baby clothes for missions, and collecting eyeglass and postage stamps for missionary projects.

She leaves two sons, Timothy Greene of Mystic, Conn. and Daniel Greene of Seoul, South Korea; a daughter, Sharon Lawrence of Grafton; three sisters, Lisa Gabrielson of Ipswich, Mass., Miriam Bergquist of Woburn, Mass. and Verna Dorsett of Kissimmee, Fla.; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 26 in Westminster Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
