Wilma Turner
Theater coach, lived in Tiverton for 30 years
Wilma "Billie" Turner, 92, of Main Road, Tiverton, formerly of Brattleboro, Vt., died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at home. She was the wife of the late Matthew A. Turner.
Born on Feb 14, 1910, in Toledo, Ohio, a daughter of the late William H. and Myrtle (Westcott) Fellows, she had lived in Tiverton for 30 years.
Mrs. Turner graduated from the Academy of Speech & Arts in Boston. She was a member of the Theater Guild and coached many actors.
She leaves two daughters-in-law, Nancy Turner of Narragansett, and Jerrilee Turner Silk of Naples, Fla.; and six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Robert W. and Jeffrey W. Turner, and sister of the late Robert H. Fellows.
Her funeral was held Thursday, Dec. 12, in the First Congregational Church, West Brattleboro, Vt. Burial was in Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery, Brattleboro.

Rita H. Paul
Mother of nine, grandmother of 14 , had great-grandson
Rita H. (Marchand) Paul, 77, formerly of Sanford Road, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2002, at Kimwell Healthcare. She was the widow of Arthur Paul.
Born in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late Raoul and Opalma (Benoit) Marchand. She lived in Westport for most of her life.
Mrs. Paul was a member of the Women’s Guild of Our Lady of Grace Parish in Westport.
She leaves five sons, Robert Paul of Tiverton, R.I., Arthur Paul Jr. and James Paul, both of Somerset, Michael Paul of Westport and Albert Paul of Fall River; four daughters, Doris Duquette and Denise Paquin, both of Westport, Lorraine Goncalo of Somerset and Rita Duhamel of Fall River; two brothers, Leo Marchand of Marietta, S.C., and Rene Marchand of Keene, N.H.; two sisters, Pauline Muntz of Charlotte, N.C., and Muriel Barselou of Little Compton, R.I.; 14 grandchildren; a great-grandson; and aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
She was the sister of the late Doris Dutton, Janice Warren and Normand Marchand.
Her funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Dec. 17, in Our Lady of Grace Church. Arrangements were by the Auclair Funeral Home. in Fall River.

Gary L. Smith
Graduated from BHS; business executive
Gary L. Smith, 48, of New Fairfield, Conn. and formerly of Barrington, died Thursday, Nov. 21, 2002, at Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn. He was the husband of Emma (Patterson) Smith.
Born in Providence, a son of Joyce E. Smith of Brook Street and the late Leonard Smith, Mr. Smith graduated from Barrington High School in 1972 and the University of Pennsylvania in 1975. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from The Wharton School, and a master’s degree in accounting and finance from the London School of Economics in 1981.
He was an executive with American Express Bank, the international banking arm of the financial services conglomerate American Express Corp. in New York City. There, he held several senior financial positions, including chief financial officer of the International Capital Corp., senior director and London branch department head of Commercial and Private Banking (for Europe, the Middle East, Indian subcontinent and East Africa), and vice president and region head for leasing and asset-based finance for Mexico, Australia, the United Kingdom and Taiwan.
Besides his wife and mother, he leaves a sister, Sherrill L. Brown of Hiram, Maine; and a nephew, Michael P. Brown of Hiram. Funeral services were private.

William M. McCauley
Veteran of two wars, lived here most of his life
William M. McCauley, 80, of 48 Kickemuit Road died Sunday, Dec. 1, 2002, in Metacom Manor Health Center, Bristol.
He was the husband of the late Josephine (Wakem) McCauley. He was born in Providence, a son of the late Gladys (Mellor) McCauley and the late Walter Crocker Sr., and lived in Warren most of his life.
He was both a U.S. Navy veteran of both World Warr II and the Korean War. He was past president of the Rhody Merrymakers Square Dancing Club of East Providence and a member for over 15 years.
He was a stationary fireman for the former Davol Rubber Co. for more than 35 years before retiring in the 1980s.
He leaves two daughters, Kathleen J. Hughes of Bristol and Jane B. McCauley of Warren; four sons, William T. McCauley of Flagstaff, Ariz., Robert M. McCauley of Bristol, John P. McCauley of Warren and David P. McCauley of Forney, Texas; one brother, Walter Crocker Jr. of Johnston; two sisters, Edith Willett of Alexandria, Va., and Gladys Exeter of Cranston; 10 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His funeral was held Friday, Dec. 6, from Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial in St. Mary of the Bay Church. Burial with military honors was in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.

Eveline J. Verrette
Bowler, dietary aid leaves brother in Warren
Eveline J. Verrette, 88, of Brockton, Mass., formerly of Fall River, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Brockton, Mass.
She was the wife of the late Emile Verrette. Born in Quebec, Canada, daughter of the late Eugene Marois and the late Georgianna (Verrett) Marois. She lived in Fall River all her married life prior to moving to Brockton two years ago to be cared for by her daughter, Louise.
She worked at St. Anne’s Hospital as a dietary aid for many years. She was a member of the Fun and Frolic Bowling League of Westport for more than 30 years. She was a communicant of St. Anne’s Parish prior to moving to Brockton.
Besides her daughter, she leaves a son, Robert Verrette of Warren; five siblings, Adrienne Savard, Julienne Marois, Therese Gignac, Fernande Caron and Gertrude Bedard, all of Quebec; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Louis Marois, Charles Marois, Lorenzo Marois, Joseph Marois, Rachel Guay, Irene Giroux and Marie Marois.
Her arrangements were made by the Boule Funeral Home, 615 Broadway, Fall River. Her funeral will be held on Thursday, Dec. 12, at 8:45 a.m., from the Boule Funeral Home, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Fall River.

Grace V. Moglia
Worked for I. Shalom Co. for nearly 50 years
Grace V. Moglia, 91, of Barker Avenue, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, at Grace Barker Nursing Center.
Born in Swansea, she was a daughter of the late Andrew C. and Mary C. (Gardella) Moglia.
She had worked as a timekeeper for the I. Shalom Co., formerly the S.E. Reins Co., for almost 50 years, retiring in 1974.
She was a communicant of St. Dominic Church, Swansea. She was educated in local schools.
She leaves several nieces and nephews, and many great-nieces and great-nephews. She was the sister of the late Mabel Ethier, Eda Medeiros, Helen Williams, Mary L. Kelly and Frank, Andrew, Alfred and Edward Moglia.
Her funeral will be held Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m. from the Birchcrest Home of Waring-Sullivan, Ashton, Coughlin, Driscoll, 189 Gardners Neck Road, Swansea, with a funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in St. Dominic Church, 1277 GAR Highway, Swansea. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Swansea.

Lena Maxwell
Clerical worker lived
here most of her life
Lena Maxwell of 700 Metacom Ave. died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at the Metacom Manor Health Center in Bristol.
She was the wife of the late Richmond H. Maxwell. Born in Warren, she was a daughter of the late Onesime and Elodie (Beauchaine) Pare.
She lived in Warren most of her life, but had also lived in Mexico for five years, Harlington, Texas, for two years and Seminole, Fla., for eight years. She also lived in the Eden Park section of Cranston for 25 years.
She was a clerical worker for the late Dr. Henry W. Hopkins in Warren.
She leaves two nephews, Albert and Robert Pare, both of Warren; and one niece, Claudette Duhamel of Acton, Mass. She was the sister of the late George O. Pare, Alice Dion, Aldea Marchand, Yvonne Parent and Florence M. Bouffard.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, Dec. 9, in St. Jean Baptiste Church. Burial was in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery.

Dorothy Steele
Former office manager
worked on Navy base
Dorothy Steele, 82, of Metacom Avenue died Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Desilets Nursing Home.
She was the wife of the late Francis Steele. Born in Fall River, the daughter of the late Auguste and Georgianna (Lapage) Dube, she had lived in Fall River and Newport before moving to Warren 11 years ago.
She had been an office manger at the Navy chaplain’s office at the former Newport Navy Base for many years before retiring.
She leaves two sons, Michael Steele in Nevada and Francis Steele in Vermont; four daughters, Marsha Merkt of Newport, Patricia Powell in Ohio, Nancy Reynolds of New Bedford and Melanie Goncalo of Mansfield, Mass.; a sister, Charlotte Auclair of Fall River; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the mother of the late David Steele, and sister of the late Jacqueline Dube.
Her funeral service was held Saturday, Dec. 7, in Auclair Funeral Home, Fall River. Cremation followed.

Florence Brouillette
Homemaker was born in Warren
Florence Brouillette, 87, of 54 Barker Ave., formerly of Third Street, died Thursday, Dec. 5, 2002, at Grace Barker Nursing Center. She was the wife of the late Edward Brouillette.
Born in Warren, she was a daughter of the late Philibert and Ida (Carbonneau) Emery.
Ms. Brouillette was a homemaker and a communicant of St. Jean Baptiste Church.
She leaves a daughter, Priscilla Brouillette of Warren, and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was the sister of the late Albert and Raymond Emery and the late Dora Bernier.
Her funeral was held on Monday, Dec. 9, from the Sansone Funeral Home, Bristol, with a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Jean Baptiste Church. She was buried in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery.

Thomas G. DiSanto
Barbershop owner was welder in World War II
Thomas G. DiSanto, 87, of Plymouth Boulevard, Westport, died Sunday, Dec. 15, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. Widowed twice, he was married to his first wife, Rhea Lillian (Pruneau) DiSanto for 41 years. He was later married for six years to Lucille (Maltais) DiSanto.
Born in Fall River, he was the son of Constantino and Francesca (Barresi) DiSanto. He graduated from BMC Durfee High School in 1934.
During World War II, Mr. DiSanto was a master welder at the Fall River Shipyard in Quincy. One of the ships he worked on was the USS Massachusetts.
Following the war, Mr. DiSanto opened his own barbershop for a short time at Globe Corners in Fall River. He then shared a barbershop for several years with his late brother, John, in the Island Park section of Portsmouth, R.I.
He later constructed his own shop on Main Road in Tiverton, R.I., serving up to three generations in some families until his retirement.
He built his own house in Westport as well as several boats, which he enjoyed using on South Watuppa Pond.
An avid artist, he painted in both watercolor and oils.
For more than 50 years, he was a member of the Montaup Country Club in Portsmouth, where he golfed almost every weekday morning with the "dawn patrol," a group that met before the sun came up.
He was a parishioner of Our Lady of Grace Church in Westport.
He leaves a daughter, Madeleine E. Ferraz of Little Compton, R.I.; a son-in-law, Anthony A. Ferraz of Little Compton; a grandson, Thomas A. Ferraz of Little Compton; and nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John C. DiSanto.
His funeral will be at 8 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 19, from the Silva-Faria Funeral Home, 730 Bedford St., Fall River, with a Mass at 9 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Church on Sanford Road. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery.

Alfred Pilotte
World War II vet, avid volunteer
Alfred "Russ" Pilotte, 92, of Aquidneck Place, Portsmouth, and formerly of 2 Debra Drive, Portsmouth, and 12 Cliff Terrace, Newport, died Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2002, at Newport Hospital. He was the husband of the late Helen S. (Bauman) Pilotte.
Born in Whitefield, N.H., on May 17, 1910, he was a son of Frank and Melina (Fournier) Pilotte. He graduated from Whitefield High School in 1929 and the University of New Hampshire in 1933. He played in the band, was a cheerleader, belonged to the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity and was assistant manager of the varsity hockey team.
Mr. Pilotte worked for W.T. Grant Co. and Dupont Chemical Co. and owned two dining cars in New York before enlisting in the United State Marine Corps in 1942. He served with the "Bat Eye Squadron" in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
He moved to Newport in 1945, where he owned a bum-boating business and was half-owner in "Gene’s Fleet Service Cleaners." He joined Renyx Field and Co. in 1956 as an investment broker and financial planner, where he was lead salesman and regional manager.
Mr. Pilotte was a volunteer manager at St. Paul’s Priory Thrift Shop for 25 years and was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, where he volunteered as an altar server, lector and Eucharistic minister. He was a member of the Newport chapter of the Knights of Columbus, Legion of Mary, Rosary Society, St. Vincent DePaul Society, DeBlois Society, Fleet Reserve Association and is a life member of the BPOE Elks Lodge #104.
In recognition of his many years of friendship and support, he was chosen as a spiritual affiliate of Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny. He and his wife were the first affiliates of the province of the United States.
Mr. Pilotte leaves a son, Ronald A. Pilotte of Newport, two daughters, Doria (DeDe) Forgue of Middletown and April D. Bernard of Newport; a sister, Doria Duke of Englewood, Ohio; and six grandchildren. He was the father of the late Allen, Russell and Melina Pilotte and brother of the late George Pilotte.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Dec. 14 at St. Anthony’s Church in Portsmouth. Donations may be made to the Portsmouth Volunteer Fire Department, 2300 East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI 02871 or Aquidneck Place Activities Fund, 125 Quaker Lane, Portsmouth, RI 02871. Arrangements by the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home in Newport.

Sylvia A. Doyle
Formerly of Portsmouth, caseworker supervisor
Sylvia A. Doyle, 76, of Windsor, Conn., and formerly of Portsmouth, died Friday, Dec. 13, 2002, at The Windsor Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Windsor.
Born in Wethersfield, Conn., on Sept. 13, 1926, she was a daughter of the late John S. and Alice (Cotter) Doyle. A graduate of Wethersfield High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Connecticut in 1948.
Ms. Doyle was a caseworker supervisor in the Human Services Department for the state of Rhode Island for 25 years before retiring in 1989. She was a former communicant of St. Anthony’s Church in Portsmouth, and past treasurer of the Pheasant Hill Neighborhood Association and the American Association of Retired Persons.
She leaves a sister, Elinor Doyle Fonseca of New Hartford, Conn.; an aunt, Mary E. Doyle of Granby, Conn.; two nephews, a niece and several great nieces and nephews.
Her funeral was held Tuesday, Dec. 17 from the Corridan Funeral Home in Chicopee, Mass., with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Stanislaus Basilica in Chicopee.
Memorial donations may be made to the Raise the Roof Campaign, c/o Chicopee Public Library, Market Square, Chicopee, MA 01013 or to the Playground Fund at St. Stanislaus School, 534 Front St., Chicopee, MA 01013.
